OP, in my opinion, you've got to nip this kind of shit in the bud... now, you can't let this continue.

Don't flat out refuse, but let them know you "can't." Tell them that that because you weren't scheduled for that time, you've made other arrangements and simply can't come in, of course you would LOVE to... IF you could, but you just can't. What are you doing with your time? Watching cartoons? Playing CoD? Who cares, that's your time. If they insist, tell them you're at a wedding or something a 5 hour drive away.

You've got to convey that you will be the go-to man to get shit done, but if you're not scheduled, and they spring this shit on you, you are unavailable.

And you've got to do it soon.

I agree. You don't want them to expect too much or too little of you. If they expect too little then they will lose respect for you and you could lose hours. If they expect too much they will take advantage of you.

I was a busser and I was supposed to be promoted for my hard work by around month 6, MAYBE 9, but all the other bussers sucked or kept quitting so I was all they had, and god forbid the servers work a little harder instead of standing around bullshitting while someone else cleans. Finally after a year someone that truly appreciated my hard work came along and said it was ridiculous that I was still bussing. She immediately slapped a chef's jacket on me and threw me in the back. A year after that I got moved to a different kitchen (this was in a casino) where I also got tips and the servers were much nicer and wore less clothing.

This is what I did. Except, I didn't have to lie. The first time they called me in I was five states away. I felt like I was making excuses, but I had to say "I am literally unable to make it there in an hour, even if I tried. Best I can do is twenty hours." So, I guess I won in the end, because I was rarely phoned in and wasn't fired!

Same here, started new job last week. 64 hours in the first week, good money but I seriously thought I was stuck in an office space parody.

[–]CommanderCooper 0 points1 point ago

Parody, or remake?

[–]azazelsnutsack 0 points1 point ago

Either way its pretty awful.

[–]hrpuffinstacks 5 points6 points ago

Don't answer the phone?

First world problem: Got a job in a shitty economy; Now have to work.

[–]FnOctavio 3 points4 points ago

Once had my boss call at 5:30am to ask me to come in from 6-2 then halfway through the shift was told I'd have to work my original shift which was from 2-9 which ended up being a 15 hour shift

[–]DriedUpSquid 8 points9 points ago

That's what caller id is for.

[–]Realworld 2 points3 points ago

Mentioned this before:

Years long coding project. As lead SA, whenever our section was critical path I was told to work unpaid overtime. Wasn't any point in explaining necessity of rest and recuperation.

I joined a carpool. "Sorry, can't stay late, carpool's here." Boss offered to drive me instead once. Took her an hour and a half in return traffic. Never asked me to stay late again.

[–]throwaway-b31480acf7 5 points6 points ago

Refuse and it will be your old job.

[–]apathetic_youth 1 point2 points ago

Fun fact: you don't actually have to show up for that shift, as you must be given reasonable notice(i believe at least 4 hours) before you can be expected to work.(this is how it is in America anyway). If they were to fire you over that you could possibly sue for wrongful termination.

[–]xteneritasx 1 point2 points ago

Lawyers are expensive.

[–]apathetic_youth 0 points1 point ago

very true.

[–]JesterAzazel 0 points1 point ago

In some places they don't need a reason to fire you.

And if they do, I'm sure they could find a way. A place I worked at did just that. More on that below.

I personally wouldn't care if I get fired from most jobs. If I don't respect the manager and they aren't respectful of me then I'm not helping them out unless it's part of my job description.

So I filled out a vacation slip, it started Tuesday and ended on Tuesday, my days off were Sat, Sun, and Mon. He told me I just had to put Tues - Friday and tore up my slip. I did what he asked and when I showed up on Tues I got marked as a no-show for Mon, and Tues was marked as my day off. I may have been able to fight it but I was going through bad times and instead, let them fire me and I drank 2000 dollars in a very short amount of time.

[–]apathetic_youth 0 points1 point ago

They can fire you at anytime if your an "at will" employee, as most minimum wage slaves are. But even if you're an "at will" employee they cant just fire you for any reason, like race, sex, gender, etc.

[–]JesterAzazel 1 point2 points ago

I doubt they would say "You're fired because you're black". If they wanted to fire someone for being a certain race, sex, etc. they would most likely keep the real reason to themselves.

I was denied a job for being male, though. So maybe I'm wrong in some cases, at least.

[–]apathetic_youth 0 points1 point ago

I'm sure they would keep the reason for firing to themselves, although in certain states they must be able to provide the employee with a reason for termination(which can be as simple as "I don't like your haircut")

Also certain business(like hooters) are legally allowed to only hire female waiters, someone sued them for it and lost too. There reason being “the essence of the business operation would be undermined if the business eliminated its discriminatory policy". Its at this point were the law gets complicated and I get confused.

[–]JesterAzazel 1 point2 points ago

This was a small bar. She said that she wanted a female staff because they sometimes have to cook. Here's the kicker, I was previously a cook and she knew it because I had went to the bar right after work and was still wearing a chef jacket.

[–]apathetic_youth 0 points1 point ago

She sounds like she would have been a shitty boss anyway.

[–]JesterAzazel 0 points1 point ago

My mother worked for her when she was having a hard time finding a job in her field. She said it wasn't bad.

It might be shitty to work for a sexist bitch that thinks that way, but I've done it before and the last one I worked for was a man hater.

[–]Forty_Cakes 1 point2 points ago

"I'm not even supposed to be here today!"

[–]SleepyTurtle 0 points1 point ago

This will always fall on the newest employee. Stick it out for a couple of months.

[–]johnnyhala 5 points6 points ago

I completely disagree. The OP has to nip this shit in the bud NOW. You let it go too many times, and they'll do it to him forever.

[–]LittleWhiteGirl 0 points1 point ago

I let my work start calling me in when others had called off or they just needed extra help, and now they always call me when they need someone. They know I'll be there when I can and they love it, and I get a lot of extra hours. I don't understand why OP should be seen as someone who will do exactly what is expected and no more?

[–]crose1900 0 points1 point ago

Service industry will demolish your soul

[–]Etceteranough 0 points1 point ago

Don't answer, let them leave a message. Now the ball is in your court, because they'll be forced to say something like, "Hey we wanted to know if you could come in at yata yata yata, if so call us back." Bam. Just don't fucking call back and enjoy your sleep. Answer the phone, the ball's in their court and they can guilt you into coming, while you're probably half asleep no less.

If they are more demanding in their message and demand you call back either way, or if you just want to out of courtesy (I hate my job so I really don't give a fuck, but you might..), at least that way you have time to wake up and compose your response instead of being a deer caught in the headlights.
