I love country music, I feel weird singing along with the religious parts. I suppose its the same feeling when a white privileged boy sings along to gangsta rap...

[–]Scrawly 82 points83 points ago

That's assuming they're self-aware enough to spot the contradiction.

[–]nimoythedestroyer 2 points3 points ago

You can like the music without subscribing to the message. Just because it sounds nice doesn't mean you actually think you "come from the streets"

[–]imperial87 3 points4 points ago

You will not take the illusion of being a hardcore g away from me

[–]MotherFuckinMontana 0 points1 point ago

Ever drive around the ghetto playing gangsta rap?

You need to man. Even as a white guy, playing NWA while driving around West Philadelphia feels unreal.

[–]flying-sheep 66 points67 points ago

expected this:

J.D.: You know how I'm totally down with the rap music?
Turk: Dude, be whiter.
J.D.: Here's the thing: TuPac, DMX, Dr. Dre, in most of their songs, these artists use an extremely volatile racial slur...the "N" word.
Turk: I got it.
J.D.: Right. My question is this: If we're both singing along, and knowing that otherwise I would never use the word, am I allowed to say...
Turk: No.
J.D.: See, that's good for me to know. I didn't...I didn't know that

[–]mispeledUsurname 5 points6 points ago

ended up watching that entire movie again, hadn't seen it in years, thanks for that, it was greeeeeeeaaaaaaat

[–]AkiraDeathStar 0 points1 point ago

Mmmmmm, Juicy Fruit.

[–]Filth_Fury 0 points1 point ago

This scene immediatly popped into my head.

[–]gerry148 2 points3 points ago

I look at it like reading a fiction book. I don't believe in it but I sure as hell enjoy it.

[–]cer4thewin 1 point2 points ago

I get a bit awkward as well. You aren't the only one.

[–]TheSecretMe 0 points1 point ago

I work with an all white geek team of programmers and designers. We love our rap and hip hop tuesday.

[–]trolloc1 0 points1 point ago

I love this song, its an awkward feeling: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b8AyHupByuU#t=0m20s

[–]bigbangbilly 0 points1 point ago

Just enjoy it the same way you would read a fantasy novel or play a fantasy video game that have their own pantheon in their fictional universes.

[–]VonIsengard 40 points41 points ago

Ha. I listen to it, too. Oddly enough, I love the song "God gave me you". I think it's a sweet, romantic idea, the same way I think Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty are sweet without believing any of it could actually happen.

And I figure if Miranda Lambert keeps rescuing stray dogs out of ditches, she can sing about Jesus all the wants.

[–]dchelix[S] 12 points13 points ago

Couldn't agree more. My gf and I love that song but she makes fun of me for liking it because I'm an atheist (and shes a christian).

[–]VonIsengard 16 points17 points ago

Well, I'll be damned. (not really, lol) Here I thought I was a weirdo.

[–]aazav 10 points11 points ago

You may still be a weirdo. This changes nothing.

[–]VonIsengard 2 points3 points ago

Shhhhhhh. I'm normal, I'm normal!

[–]Mechanical_Toaster 4 points5 points ago

That's so awesome. I dedicated that song to my mom, despite not believing in a god. She thought it was strange of me, but she liked it anyway. _^

[–]MrStuff 76 points77 points ago

Upvoted the hell out of this. You get through some great songs (personally I go in for great older stuff like Wild Irish Rose) and then something like Way Out Here or Jesus Take the Wheel comes on the radio. It's like trying to take a relaxing stroll through a field of landmines.

.

Edit: Might as well add this while I'm the top comment, because it's relevant and damn hilarious. :D

[–]upbeat_addict 7 points8 points ago

there's actually an older country tune by Johnny Paycheck where he talks about the modern church's hypocrisy.

[–]stanthemanchan 2 points3 points ago

Hayes Carll is also pretty awesome:

She Left Me For Jesus

She left me for Jesus and that just ain't fair
She says that he's perfect, how could I compare
She says I should find him and I'll know peace at last
If I ever find Jesus, I'm kickin' his ass

Another Like You

[–]xoites 5 points6 points ago

I really don't think this guy gets Johnny Cash.

[–]StrikingCrayon 6 points7 points ago

I'm a country nutt but just can't listen to the radio any more because the last five years the hits have gotten so preachy

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points ago

the last five years the hits have gotten so preachy

Ehm, I hate to break it to you , but it passed preachy thirty odd years ago and is now galloping headlong into evangelisation.

[–]StrikingCrayon 2 points3 points ago

What I meant was 5 - 10 years ago I could hear alot of good songs on the radio and only have to hear a few religious ones. Now I have to hear A LOT of religious ones to hear very few good ones.

Now even a song that has nothing to do with faith will throw god in it randomly.

However you are completely right they have gone full evangelical, and you never go full evangelical.

[–]reemusk 1 point2 points ago

Yet "alcohol" and "red rag top" are popular songs.

[–]wearmyownkin 6 points7 points ago

My favorite is when Jesus Take the Wheel is followed by White Liar. I worked at a BarBQ place and the only thing they played was country music. It grows on you

[–]malphonso 101 points102 points ago

So do tumors, it doesn't make them good.

[–]TimeZarg -1 points0 points ago

Unless they're benign tumors.

[–]bgates87 12 points13 points ago

... on your dick.

[–]Jisaw 7 points8 points ago

Speaking of growths on dicks; my second pimple ever was on my dick. Midshaft, left side just before the bend. I was horrified enough at the prospect of face pimples, but then... there it was, a giant, white-headed beast growing on my cock. It also holds the record of being the most painful post-pop zip I've ever had due to my refusal to stop masturbating as it healed.

[–]MegaFireDonkey 14 points15 points ago

Yep, that's it. No more internet tonight.

[–]aazav 4 points5 points ago

OVERSHARING!

[–]solidsnake2730 1 point2 points ago

Dude! Dick tumors are terrible, especially when you have them removed and you get dick scars. Nobody is gonna want to touch your dong once you have dick scars.

[–]Avalon81204 10 points11 points ago

Obviously not true since about 80% of american guys have circumcision scars.

[–]bdubble 1 point2 points ago

then something like Way Out Here

Never heard that song before, what unbelievably pandering drivel.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

what about spaceships? how do UFOs in country music work with religion?

[–]ramirrezdoeverything 8 points9 points ago

GREAT SCOTT, MARTY.

[–]Kowcow 31 points32 points ago

Good to know there are more atheist country fans!

[–]TheVetrinarian 50 points51 points ago

As someone who generally hates country music, I don't know that feel.

[–]larkable 6 points7 points ago

"What Was I Thinkin'" and "Whiskey for my Men, Beer for my Horses" are the only two country songs I actually enjoy. Everything else just makes me cringe.

[–]Abedeus 16 points17 points ago

You need more Johnny Cash in your life.

He sang for your enjoyment, man.

[–]larkable 3 points4 points ago

Oh, I enjoy a few of Johnny Cash's songs, but I've only heard them here and there and don't actually know the names of the songs.

"I've Been Everywhere Man" and "Ring of Fire" I believe are two of his that I know off the top of my head.

[–]CMG55 3 points4 points ago

Listen to all of Live at Folsom Prison.

[–]Abedeus 1 point2 points ago

"You are my sunshine" is a great cover of his, and my favorite "Highwayman" strangely reminds me of reincarnation themes, and not Christianity.

[–]larkable 1 point2 points ago

Yeah, I've heard both of these. I didn't even know Highwayman was sung by Johnny Cash. He is a pretty good singer!

[–]jackruby1123 2 points3 points ago

Toby Keith is not a real country musician. He's a pop musician with a voice doubler and a slide guitarist.

[–]iluvhobos27 0 points1 point ago

I hate country music as well, but oddly enough I love what I guess you would call "Christian rock/screamo(though I hate that word)". They have (generally) better vocals, better music, and better lyrics. They are also generally more thoughtful and poetic. There are also a lot of songs about questioning their faith. But lyrics about god aren't just found here, or in country music, they are in more than you would expect. Listen, and you may pick then up (provided you do not listen to the shit that's on the radio today).

[–]Payne4 11 points12 points ago

There's no denying that 'One flew over the cucoo's nest' has some great faces in it.

[–]LawlCzar 21 points22 points ago

I'm in a state of shock that other non-religious people listen to country music.

[–]bebobli 15 points16 points ago

Some of you should get together and make some more humorous country atheist songs, please.

[–]LawlCzar 5 points6 points ago

Go look up 'Cletus Take The Reel' by Tim Hawkins. Hawkins is a Christian, but he's still an absolutely hilarious song writer. You won't regret it.

[–]wee_little_puppetman 0 points1 point ago

Also, while not strictly atheist, certainly pro-science: Hard n' Phirm-Trace Elements

EDIT: Also: Hard 'n Phirm - She Named the Pony Jesus

[–]cal679 3 points4 points ago

A lot of soul music is about god, a lot of reggae music is about god, a lot of blues music is about god, a lot of classical music is about god. Music is music, I've never had a problem listening to country music because I like the way it sounds, if the message isn't in line with my way of thinking that's not going to take away from a good tune.

[–]Palikk 5 points6 points ago

Yeah. If somebody wrote a song about Greek mythology or Cthulhu, it wouldn't bother me at all. Why would Jesus?

[–]NiceAndTruthful 2 points3 points ago

Why would Country Music based around Cthulu or Zeus bother anyone. It'd be amazing!

[–]Evilsmurf 1 point2 points ago

I'm a really tolerant guy, in fact the only fight I've had in my adult life was because someone called a black person I didn't know the n-word. But I love the shit outta Burzum.

[–]schmiegola_mcbain 9 points10 points ago

All my roommates listen to country. It's not too bad, but to me it comes off as straight up propaganda.

[–]FraternityMan 5 points6 points ago

Its less propaganda and more appealing to the majority of people who listen to country, The Bible Belt

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

There are so many raunchy country songs though. From what I've heard at the grocery store, 1/3 is about sappy memories, 1/3 is about god and country, 1/3 is about fucking.

[–]queenlikememo 2 points3 points ago

I had a roommate who blasted country music whenever she was doing her homework. When i got sick of hearing it, i responded with some Biggie and she always turned her music off. I guess she couldnt handle hearing, "who shot ya?" i personally cant stand it. Its like Pavlov's dog with me. I hear a twang and start to get the dry heaves.

[–]sludgefiend504 8 points9 points ago

Hank Williams III, 'nuff said.

[–]thehero29 5 points6 points ago

Yes, Hank 3 is awesome.

[–]MagnificentBasterd 6 points7 points ago

You can just make that statement without throwing out at least one song for those that haven't been exposed.

[–]jawnofthedead 1 point2 points ago

Hell yes

[–]DownWithTheSickness 1 point2 points ago

I am a country fan, but that was pretty fucking bad. His dad was twice as good and his grandad twice that. Not offense, but just cause you are kin doesn't make you good.

[–]GeekOfDoom 3 points4 points ago

This is excellent, it's basically the same look I get. Does anyone know what this is from?

[–]FightWithTools 3 points4 points ago

One flew over the Cuckoo's nest.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Ah, didn't spot that. I thought it was his Reverend Jim character in Taxi. Talk about typecasting.

[–]MaeveningErnsmau 3 points4 points ago

That's the experience I have listening to Sufjan Stevens.

[–]andjok 1 point2 points ago

I love this song and Sufjan in general. I'll belt this song, I don't even give a shit that it's about God.

[–]DrDicknips 2 points3 points ago

Is that a young Christopher Lloyd? He looks kinda like Bill Hader.

[–]CorFace 4 points5 points ago

There's a lot of brilliant country that in no way include religious messages.

[–]queenlikememo 0 points1 point ago

Keith Urban is pretty good. I draw the line at him.

[–]JimRJapan 3 points4 points ago

I'm a banjo player, and some of my favorite tunes to pick are spirituals...good music is good music, even if you don't buy into the message.

[–]cteez910 10 points11 points ago

The problem I have with country music is basically that its pretty much all waaay too idealistic. The world isnt like that. I understand that you might want to be taken back to a time in your teenage years where you didnt give a shit about life and you could just enjoy the moment in your ugh "hitched up pickup truck with the windows down and cold ones in the bed." But every other song doesnt have to be about that or the nice girl who you pickup at prom and spend an incredible night with. I have strong feelings against country music, and it sucks because i live in Georgia and go to school at the University of South Carolina. /rant

[–]cal679 2 points3 points ago

There are plenty of country songs about alcoholism, suicide, murdering your spouse because s/he "done you wrong". One of my favourite country songs ever is Methamphetamine by Old Crow Medicine Show, definitely not an idealistic teenage throwback.

[–]cteez910 2 points3 points ago

Of course there are, but as far as I have seen through the ways of my friends (Southern Frat boys) and others all over the south. I see Old Crow Medicine Show as more of a Southern Folk band. That song (ill see if i can find it) Alabama High Test sounds a lot like Bob Dylan's Subterranean Homesick Blues as the top comment on the Youtube video indicates. But stuff in vein of Jason Aldean, Luke Bryan, Josh Turner, etc. I know thats not all country has to offer, but I just hate it sooo much. But then again they all make fun of me for my music tastes because "they are just so weird." Saying that im closeminded because i dont listen to country (and Dubstep for that matter). When i listen to sooo much more music than they do including jazz, classical, metal, blues, hip hop/rap, rock, rockabilly, yeah... Uh oh here comes the elitism again. I better stop myself. And i know there are redeeming qualities in country just like there are in any genre, just the multitude idealistic topics sickens me to death. Ive even tried crossover albums such as Tab Benoit's Brother to the Blues album which is probably as close to country as i have.

Edit: Wait, i found some Peter Wolf - Midnight Souveniers. Thats the closest to country i have.

[–]Naomi_DerRabe 1 point2 points ago

murdering your spouse because s/he "done you wrong"

Yeah, like Garth Brooks' "Thunder Rolls" most versions played on the radio leave out the last verse where she shoots him for cheating on her.

best i can find of garth singing the third verse

Lyrics with the third Verse

Edit: formatting

[–]Akaforty 0 points1 point ago

I mainly listen to it because of the vibe. I like the sound of it and tend to ignore any lyrics really.

[–]bparkey 0 points1 point ago

It is amazing how different people can perceive a genre of music. Granted, I've never listened to Jason Aldean, Luke Bryan or Josh Turner willingly. But it certainly isn't idealism as I understand what you are talking about that I enjoy about it. It seems that type of stuff is all a relatively new thing in country. Vince Gill is right when he calls it "mind numbing." Country hits the range of human emotions and outlooks as much as any other genre. I know it isn't the main thing on country radio right now, but it is still out there even today.

Hayes Carll - Chances Are

Justin Townes Earle - Am I That Lonely Tonight

Old 97's - Rollerskate Skinny

And of course any number of older country artists have plenty of stuff that mines all kinds of emotions and experiences. Townes Van Zandt's Live at the Old Quarter is a great place to start for the sadder side of country.

[–]fearlessly 6 points7 points ago

The only ones that bother me are the ones where someone has cancer, and then something something JESUS FIXED 'IM.

No, science fixed him.

I just roll my eyes and carry on with my day.

[–]seancolorado 6 points7 points ago

I love country music! Even if it has Jesus references, as long as the music is good then I'll swallow those lines just to listen to the rest of the song!

[–]Morfesto 2 points3 points ago

Check out Liquor and Whores!

[–]Kaluthir 0 points1 point ago

My favorite is Titties and Beer.

[–]AgentKilroy 2 points3 points ago

I have to ask; what movie is this from?

[–]SaysQuack 1 point2 points ago

one flew over the cookoo's nest

[–]joshisneat 2 points3 points ago

"God is great, beer is good... and people are crazy.."

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]joshisneat 1 point2 points ago

Or if you just think about the first part and the last part in the same context.

[–]sludgefiend504 1 point2 points ago

Win.

[–]brattonWVU 2 points3 points ago

So, basically, just like being a Christian on reddit.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

You shouldn't feel weird for the music parts, and I've never been more ashamed to call myself an atheist than when I see these posts about country music (/s part over).

Just replace the names with other names, and you'll see it sounds perfectly natural. Replace "Jesus" with "Baal", "Mighty God" with "Mighty Mammon" and "Holy Ghost" with "Spirit of Asmodeus". And instead of being the cult of Jesus Christ, think of these songs in terms of the cult of the Seven Princes of Gothic Halja. It sounds totally fine when you just change the names to something unfamiliar, it doesn't sound like a creepy superstitious cult at all!

Woops, guess I wasn't done with the sarcasm after all.

[–]asspril 1 point2 points ago

I was just thinking how funny it is that one of my favorite songs it "Long Black Train" by Josh Turner.

[–]erdu21 2 points3 points ago

Ahh I'm going to assume there is a porn film by that name already.

[–]Talphin 1 point2 points ago

I have fantasies of starting an atheist country band, and making it big. And then I come back to reality.

[–]Stately_Gentleman 1 point2 points ago

I enjoy the oldies like Hank Williams and Loretta Lynn. There is a lot to be said for their songs of heartbreak.

[–]waterbabies3 1 point2 points ago

Drop kick me, Jesus, through the goal posts of life. Ahhhh - good times.

[–]Epithemus 1 point2 points ago

And remember theres someone, up abooooovvvee

And be a simple, kind of a man

Or be someone, you love and understand

[–]ecmmyers 1 point2 points ago

Same here, I listen to metalcore and there are a number of good, Christian bands. I can enjoy the music without endorsing the message.

[–]Drewu271 1 point2 points ago

I surprisingly LOVE Spirit In The Sky by Norman Greenbaum. I think that is the artist. It isn't country but it relates.

[–]Eppsmayne 1 point2 points ago

Yeah. Country music gets so out of hand sometimes. Listening to Carrie Underwood is EXACTLY like walking through a minefield.

[–]Archae23 1 point2 points ago

You know I grew up with country and I still love it,but being an atheist does make it difficult to stay focused.

[–]holloway 1 point2 points ago

Not sure what his beliefs are but Smog has a few nice songs, like Mother Of The World

Whether or not there is any type of god

I'm not supposed to say

And today

I don't really care

God is a word

And the argument ends there

[–]ElAyDubleZee 1 point2 points ago

Same reaction when my mom found out "that guy" on How I Met Your Mother is gay IRL.

[–]thedarkpurpleone 1 point2 points ago

I usually just ignore the lyrics when the song starts getting religious. Like "Long Black Train" I just love the sound of Josh Turners voice, don't even care what the lyrics are saying.

[–]osin144 2 points3 points ago

Yeah his voice is insane, would you go with me is his best IMO.

[–]SolomonGomes 1 point2 points ago

Any Bob Dylan fans here? I love most his albums but listening to "Slow Train Coming", "Saved" and "Shot of Love" is hard work for an atheist.

[–]btinc 1 point2 points ago

Being an atheist who is also gay, liking country music is a double-whammy for me.

[–]oddballodd 1 point2 points ago

Today's "country" music is just hip-hop for rednecks.

[–]PneumonicFungus 1 point2 points ago

I feel the same way, Blues being my favourite type of music.

[–]kittysparkles 1 point2 points ago

This is how I feel as a Christian who likes black metal.

[–]bscoder 1 point2 points ago

I don't like country music, but I always upvote this gif regardless what it's associated with.

[–]ImBatginge 5 points6 points ago

  1. I fucking love One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.
  2. I believe Johnny Cash is the only good country singer.

[–]van_vanhouten 8 points9 points ago

Well sir, if you think that Johnny Cash is the only good country singer, you have been misinformed. Listen to: Hank Williams Sr., George Jones, Merle Haggard and Willie Nelson and get back to me. Signed, an atheist country music lover.

[–]DatoeDakari 4 points5 points ago

Hank Williams, exactly, I can't explain it.

[–]Kaestchen 2 points3 points ago

As an european I seldom get in touch with country music, except for Johnny Cash (because he is veeery famous I think). I know only some other country musicians from ... GTA: San Andreas ... I listened the hell out of the country radio channel back then. lol :-) And that crazy moderator was funny too. More like creepy ... Best song from Johnny Cash is "I walk the line", I love it.

[–]cal679 1 point2 points ago

That country station on San Andreas is what got me into country music, easily the best station in the game.

[–]sje46 1 point2 points ago

Listing.

It was an alright station, for me.

[–]FraternityMan 1 point2 points ago

Johnny Horton too!

[–]reemusk 1 point2 points ago

WELLLLLL IN 1814 WE TOOK A LITTLE TRIP....

[–]FraternityMan 1 point2 points ago

Johnny Reb, North to Alaska, Battle of the Bismark!

[–]van_vanhouten 1 point2 points ago

In 1814 we took a little trip Along with Colonel Jackson down the mighty Mississip. We took a little bacon and we took a little beans And we caught the bloody British in the town of New Orleans.

We fired our guns and the British kept a'comin. There wasn't nigh as many as there was a while ago. We fired once more and they began to runnin' on Down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico.

[–]frigginhumid 1 point2 points ago

Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson, Skeeter Davis, Eddie Arnold, Roger Miller, Hank Snow, Charlie Pride, John Prine and Randy Travis were the big influences on my music repertoire as a guitar player and singer when it came to the country music selections. I didn't really follow Travis when he started producing his albums of "inspiration" but his latest anniversary one looks good.

Edit: forgot Marty Robbins and Marvin Rainwater

[–]Cpncrnch 1 point2 points ago

Don't forget Jerry Reed

[–]Evilsmurf 1 point2 points ago

Agree on Hank Williams. I also believe in the Williams family that the talent skipped a generation, because Hank III is pretty awesome too. But the less said about Hank Jr, the better.

[–]Naomi_DerRabe 2 points3 points ago

Also, listen to the group The Highwaymen, which is Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, and Kris Kristofferson. I love their 'theme' song.

[–]bracomadar 2 points3 points ago

I'm gonna add Roger Miller and Marty Robbins to this growing list.

[–]irawwwr 2 points3 points ago

[–]DatoeDakari 1 point2 points ago

You forgot about Hank Williams.

I dislike country music... but Hank Williams, man...damn.

[–]AutumnEmber 2 points3 points ago

Glad I love rock music. I don't think I could deal with all of that.

[–]TrickTrolld 2 points3 points ago

My favorite country line:

This house is protected by the Lord... and a gun.

If you can find which song this belongs to, you get a *cookie.

*upvote

[–]AnticScarab3 5 points6 points ago

This house is protected by the Lord... and a gun.

I trust this omnipotent being to protect my family, but I have a gun just in case he fucks up.

[–]bags_of_bees_balls 1 point2 points ago

Way Out Here- Josh Thompson.

[–]thegreatgazoo 1 point2 points ago

Atheists have pickup trucks that break down and dogs that die. Atheists don't mind being called darling even if you don't have to or don't know their name.

Probably not many have their momma get run over by a train the day she leaves prison. But everyone has their problems.

[–]TheDreadCat 1 point2 points ago

Same here, being in Texas, and I just laugh allllll day long at the people here. Love me some country though. Edit: Took out random words.

[–]spiderlandcapt 1 point2 points ago

I listen to a shit ton of music and to me some of the most energetic and rock n roll music is old gospel. The lyrical message becomes just part of the music itself.

Stuff like this!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=il2xXRSJLmc

[–]xoites 1 point2 points ago

My boss swears that if you play Country Music backwards your dog comes back to life and your ex wife stops drinking.

[–]high5sexwhoa 1 point2 points ago

[–]BlastMeBagpipes 0 points1 point ago

What film is this clip is this from? Cookoo Nest?

[–]MaeveningErnsmau 2 points3 points ago

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest

[–]xMidnitex 0 points1 point ago

I think I've seen this clip somewhere before. Anyone care to tell me?

[–]dreambmcgee 0 points1 point ago

ha! for some reason I love the shit out of bible music. I listen to it while cleaning and while getting waisted.

[–]lianodel 0 points1 point ago

I don't listen to a lot of country, but if I love Marty Robbins' Gunfighter Ballads and Trail Songs. I know all the words to every song, and often sing along with them—no exceptions.

[–]twowheels 0 points1 point ago

Of course, there are sometimes some good ones... one of these days I want to play some Willie Nelson when my mom's in the car (her favorite)... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cowboys_Are_Frequently,_Secretly_Fond_of_Each_Other

[–]geek_loser 0 points1 point ago

Watching the music video for Concrete Angel is a tear jerker.

[–]TheOnlyPolygraph 0 points1 point ago

I feel this way about P.O.D. Not exactly country, no, but really catchy songs that don't preach at you too much (save for Satellite, but that song is too good for me to give a damn).

[–]johnny107 2 points3 points ago

POD

Jesus Christ it's like it's the year 1998 again!

[–]FreeThinkerLee 0 points1 point ago

I love country music, so I know exactly what you mean, I wish there were secular country music stations.

[–]C_Hodges 0 points1 point ago

Squirrel?

[–]dclowd9901 0 points1 point ago

I love gospel music for its tradition, harmonies and vibrancy. I see no conflict.

[–]Corrik 0 points1 point ago

Please don't associate the pop country crap on the radio with all country. Check out a band called O'Death for proof.

[–]kerelberel 0 points1 point ago

Try listening to the brand of country music featured in films like Easy Rider. Try The Byrds, The Flying Burrito Brothers or Gram Parsons. Whether they're religious or not doesn't matter that much, it's not a big theme in their music.

[–]moths 0 points1 point ago

Lee Hazlewood!

[–]moths 0 points1 point ago

[–]kencat1 0 points1 point ago

Yeah I listen to metalcore and I feel the same, but it doesn't usually bother me.

[–]GreenElite87 0 points1 point ago

This is why I either listen to melodic music only or I just listen to the sounds of their voices, without hearing the meaning of the words...I feel like I listen to a couple songs already that I'm morally against, but they're pleasing to the ear.

[–]Ematrix56 0 points1 point ago

Meh, I don't give a damn.

[–]AFewSecondsAgoDouche 0 points1 point ago

Excellent.

Have an upvote, from all of my accounts <3

[–]blackjesus75 0 points1 point ago

God gave me you, every time but I still sing along.

[–]wittyusernameplease 0 points1 point ago

I always feel really odd about liking Carrie Underwood and Faith Hill. Now I don't feel so bad. Thank you, r/atheism.

[–]faceinthegrass 0 points1 point ago

The same face was made when I found out Spirit in the Sky was about Jesus. (As if the name didn't give it away already)

The best title for this .gif was "Drunk at 4 in the morning when I realize I have to be to work by 7."

[–]SupersonicSnail 0 points1 point ago

I listen to all kinds of music, some having religious lyrics. While I despise all religion, I enjoy art. And personally, as long as I enjoy a musicians work, I don't give the slightest fuck what his believe or ideology in any way is.

[–]adieuSpaceCowboy 0 points1 point ago

I'm not an atheist but I still thought the gif was hilarious. BTW I feel like everyone does that when they listen to country haha.

[–]creepymouse 0 points1 point ago

I have a list of approved topics for Country music. I think it all should be about drinking, cheating, fighting, trains, or truck driving.

Unapproved topics are Jesus, dead children, America, and grandmothers.

[–]todenyyrgoal 0 points1 point ago

This is totally me haha. Great gif for the situation.

[–]GregorMendel 0 points1 point ago

Hahaha, love it.

[–]Shredder13 0 points1 point ago

Huh?

[–]MasTacosPorFavor 0 points1 point ago

In terms of country music, I like the Texas/Oklahoma Red Dirt scene. While there's an occasional shout out to Jesus in the songs, it's a lot less preachy than a lot of the mainstream stuff. Sets country hipster switch to off.

And then there's always Hayes Carll's She Left Me For Jesus

[–]Lay-Z-Bones 0 points1 point ago

I would like to recommend to you then Voltaire ( the singer not the other one ) I personally enjoy his one country album hate lives in a small town. Its a good listen if you have time.

[–]MicFury 0 points1 point ago

This happens to me all the time. It's nice to know I'm not the only one.

[–]laskuraska 0 points1 point ago

now i wonder what a country song would even sound like without god in it...

oh wait!! I know!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rq2eeJMt2YE

The Light Crust Doughboys were crooning about pussy way back in the 1930's.

Pussy, Pussy, Pussy

[–]Doughb0y 0 points1 point ago

My friend is quite the redneck, loves nascar, loves country and is an atheist. Kind of a mind fuck when i only have 2 other atheist friends and they are te definition of college liberal

[–]RickRay1 0 points1 point ago

Whenever I used to buy albums when I was younger (I'm 63) of country artists, you'd always get one religious song on it. Somehow, in my atheist mind I couldn't bring myself to listen to it. If the story or message is preachy or godly I kinda turn it off! Other than that, I do enjoy my country music. But, old rock & roll of the 50's, 60's, 70's is what I listen to a lot more now that I'm an out of the closet atheist. Fuck I'm getting old!

[–]queenlikememo 0 points1 point ago

I attended my cousin's wedding last october. The theme of her wedding was "rustic" and my whole family and I had to endure listening to country music for three and a half hours. I felt like the young kid in "cuckoo's nest" who wanted to slash his wrists.
On the ride home, my boyfriend and I jammed to Rick Astley just to scrub our brains from listening to the most twangy, jesusy country music i've ever had the displeasure of listening to.

[–]PANTSoRAMA 0 points1 point ago

Does anyone else watch "The Voice". I was agog at the guy who sang Jesus Take the Wheel. He dedicated it to his mom who died in a car crash.

Stunning, and the last thing I want on the road is some addled moron in the midst of a potential car wreck, throwing up their hands, and letting God do the work.

[–]Owlsrule12 0 points1 point ago

This is legit. I make the exact same expression when listening to decent music that references religion. I usually look around to see if anyone else heard + is atheist. success kid when I do see someone else making the expression

[–]EvelynJames 0 points1 point ago

Rap too. Or the Blues, Gospel, Soul...well just about everything. Hell even Metal. Aint no Satan without God.

[–]Goldenelm 0 points1 point ago

Doc!

[–]whale_omelette 0 points1 point ago

Clearly you are not listening to the right country music: Robbie Fulks

[–]0ffGrid 0 points1 point ago

I sort of like bluegrass, and folk

[–]VinceViegel 0 points1 point ago

TIL that is Christopher Lloyd in the movie One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest

[–]EvilBosom 0 points1 point ago

It's the same with hip-hop. My favorite artists like 2Pac and Nas are really religious.

[–]zrodion 0 points1 point ago

What it's like to be a christian who listens to orthodox black metal.

[–]BoColdBlooded 0 points1 point ago

This is how I feel about listening to Elvis' gospel albums. I could listen to "How Great Thou Art" & "Crying' in the Chapel" on repeat, but it really does feel weird singing along.

[–]Tmanthegreat1 0 points1 point ago

I saw this on Brad Paisley's facebook page and I was pleasantly surprised by the message written. I don't know if it was actually him that wrote this or some PR person, but for someone who talks about god and Jesus in his songs, I was surprised that his memorial day post didn't have anything about 'God bless America' or something like that

[–]sam4059 0 points1 point ago

I don't like country or rap. Good guy rock and roll doesn't try to make it illegal.

[–]JusLykeAspen 0 points1 point ago

Many of George Jones' songs, such as "Will You Visit Me on Sundays?", are glaringly non-religious.

If you know anything about some of the old Honky Tonkers, you'd know that their lifestyles were anything but "God Fearing" and the tales of their drinking, drugging, cheating, orgies, prison, violence, etc. make Hendrix, Joplin and Jagger look like straight-up amateurs when it comes to sinning.

I think most aging Honky Tonk musicians become scared of dying and are beset by guilt for not living a "Christian Lifestyle" for the majority of their lives. They try to make up for it by releasing gospel music, traditional hymnals and other overtly religious dreck before they die. Johnny Cash is a prime example, and was the impetus for me to divide my musical collection into "Classic country" and "Gospel Country".

Hank III is always a safe bet if you don't want to hear Jesus-Freak rhetoric.

[–]MotherFuckinMontana 0 points1 point ago

As someone who lives in a land dominated by cowboys and indians, country sucks.

Bluegrass however, is the tits.

[–]Rieklin 0 points1 point ago

I prefer 50's western. It's happy upbeat, and fun to listen to.
