In reply to yours, I give you the Su-27 "Flanker" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bSr-L5ktczE, the aircraft used in the gif. It has similar maneuverability characteristics and is just as fast as the F-22, though it is minus a fly-by-wire computer, so it actually can do more incredible maneuvers than the Raptor. Also, as shown in the gif, it can land on carriers, which the F-22 is no where near being able to.

I would imagine that he went in for the landing and was told to wave off or whatever by the guy in charge of that(deck commander? Flight controller? No idea) and he was a new pilot. So he pulled up too much. That kind of easily destroyed that plane. One quarter second later on pull up and plane goes BOOM! Hook caught? BOOM!

That tail hook came inches from grabbing a cable, which would have been a horrible disaster. He was also very close to a full stall. I'm gonna assume it was an unskilled pilot who panicked and throttled up.

Yes, he gave full power but the problem shitterplug is talking about is that the angle is way too steep. Missing still involves being relatively flat while flying past the hook. Otherwise if you catch the hook, the front of the jet would slam down against the ship. Also, the tail almost hits the ship deck which should probably never happen.

That was not Pugachev's cobra. He passed the maximum lift pitch threshold, by far. He was just able to power out of it because he punched the throttle early enough to give the engines time to spool up and power out of it.

This is Pugachev's cobra, yanking back on the stick under power is not.

Not sure if this is common knowledge but in case anyone is wondering what happened in the gif...

Runways on aircraft carriers are very short. When jets land then have to hit basically a big rubber band to to bring them to a stop quicker. Sometimes they miss, in which case they go back up and try again.
