One time this girl questioned evolution in class, and EVERBODY laughed at her. I really wish I could see one of these arguments if it were less one sided.

What happened afterwards?

[–]HoesFOSHO 0 points1 point ago

Haha, well even the teacher laughed. The girl made the comment right at the end of class, so when the bell rang, a bunch of us stayed back to snicker with teacher and joke about religious crazies. It was a high school history class in a suburb of San Francisco.

I was the ONLY atheist in my philosophy class in undergrad (2005ish...) in North Carolina (from CT originally) ... Boy did I have a ball, I'm just as stubborn as they were and I generally left them reasoning in circles with no good answer for my faith shattering questions.... Muahahaha....

I honestly have no clue how it all started. Apparently some kid next to me started preaching at some agnostic girl about how she would burn in hell for not believing in god. This atheist girl in front of me that I was sort of hitting on turned around and started questioning him. I got a whiff of the action and dove right in. Within minutes the two small groups pretty much banded up an army -- the atheist girl and I started saying "who else here is an atheist?" and maybe 9 or 10 others got up and staggered over. The preacher kid stood up and yelled "who else here is christian?" and maybe half the class walked to this one table. The kid was cussing up a storm, and we called him out. The teacher, who I presume was atheist stood up and said "If you're religious enough to the point where you are terrified of going to hell, why is it that your language is so colorful?" It got really intense. The teacher was loving every moment of it. It lasted a good 2 hours (that was the cool thing - we were in Saturday school. lots of kids--maybe 450-- had to make up tardies by attending.) Over all, the room got really loud and heated. I guess the atheists "won," but everybody had a great time nevertheless -- atheists and christians alike. It was fucking awesome.

I felt like a kid in a candy store. r/atheism gave me the bullets, I sprayed them out. Good points left and right, from both sides too.

I felt this way when, in the middle of a "Socratic seminar" session of religion class in Catholic school, I made the argument that homosexuals either A) don't know that what they're doing is a sin (in which case they don't have Full Knowledge), or B) don't believe what they're doing is wrong (in which case they don't have Full Consent of the Will), and thus having a homosexual relationship, in Catholic theology, cannot reasonably be said to be a Mortal Sin (that doesn't prevent it from being a Venial Sin, but those can be purged during Mass through the Confeitor or through a repentant Confession).

My classmates argued that not knowing something was wrong was no defense. My non-religious, logical-to-a-fault friend argued that it was basically identical to the Insanity Defense in civil trials (my classmates refused to accept that such a thing existed, even in secular courts). The nun who presided over the class had this horrified look on her face the whole time, and said something half-heartedly about how Social Justice demanded that we couldn't accept homosexuality.

For a 17-year-old, it felt like defeating an entire religion.

I've been there. Such a great feeling because any Reddit atheist is 100 times more ready to do battle than the average Christian. I went to a Jesuit college... my teachers were not excited to see me.

The fact that some people argue that their book (Bible/Qur´an/whatever) is evidence of their God is the thing that always blows me away.

[–]fareswheel65 0 points1 point ago

That's not really true. As a Muslim I usually find that nobody can win the argument because both people, me included are far too arrogant to admit we are wrong. And we can never deliver the striking blow that will win the argument

but you can always turn a muslim around with bacon

Why on Earth is this on the frontpage?

[–]znk 12 points13 points ago

God works in mysterious ways.

[–]Leithia 1 point2 points ago

So that's where dumb gifs come from! No wonder I never liked him.

Because it received lots of upvotes. Perhaps you should go read about how reddit works?
