I had a Dane, a harlequin. She was beautiful. Her ears weren't cropped.

I agree about the ear cropping (and tail cropping for that matter) on any breed. I understand it was originally done to prevent injury in working dogs. I admit I don't know much about working dogs, but I am more inclined to accept that argument, if it's to genuinely prevent a likely future health issue. But on a pet for cosmetic reasons? Absolutely not.

My Doberman had cropped ears. They were cropped when he was very young, and helped to prevent him from getting ear infections. I'm not sure if it helps in other breeds as well, but it did for him.

Big dogs with a tail can break it, that's why on some breeds they crop their tails. Dogs with really long ears can actually tear them, that's why some do this. I'm not a fan of ear cropping, but I I'm all for tail cropping. I can't imagine my boxer having one.

My mom just adopted a dog, and his tail is all KINDS of messed up. Just feeling it makes me shiver. Broken tails can be extremely painful for dogs, and they don't often heal correctly either. He was a mutt, but it definitely reminds me why it's important for working dogs to have things like that done.

Now, for aesthetics? I generally disagree with the practice. But for hunting and working dogs, the less chance they have to get hurt, the better for everyone involved. I know they cut off the dew-claws (the 'thumb' pad that's a bit higher up on the front legs) on hunting dogs, because they'll get caught on brush and ripped off.

But, I'm pretty guilty of liking the crop look. If I ever get a doberman, I'd really love them to be cropped. That just means I have yet another reason to adopt a rescue or something, rather then buying a pup from a breeder. I couldn't crop a pup.

While cropped ears can look better on breeds that "supposed" to have them (my first boxer had standing ears), i will not do it to my future dogs, it's a painful surgery. Will I crop their tails? Yes, because it doesn't involve any surgery and most likely is not very unpleasant for the dog.

Why the heck are people downvoting your earlier comment? haha Anyway, yeah, I agree. I love cropped ears, but there's no way I could do something like that to my dog. Unless I planned on using them for rescue work, which is extremely unlikely. I wish they'd change the akc show rules for dobermans, in that they didn't require ear crops, but ah, what can you do. I've never really understood why people get really bent out of shape over tail docking, though. It really is for the safety of the dog. Heck, pets will even get their tails broken in day-to-day life, and some breeds of dogs, their tail's like a maul.

Not sure why your being downvoted. My Dane's tail never caused bruises or breakage of anything. It is big and heavy and can hurt if shes super excited.

Most of my injuries from my dane are from her giant head hitting me in the face when she tries to lick me haha.

A cropped tail is an injury? It's not even a surgery. It's done after birth and it falls of in a day. As I said, I'm against ear cropping, because it is actually a surgery and will be unpleasant for the dog.

I did say earlier in the thread that if it can be shown that it's done for health reasons then I'm more inclined to accept the argument. I was asking if there's evidence regarding cropped ears resulting in fewer ear infections.

I dunno about ear infections, but I know a person whose dog had really long ears, and somehow tore them. I've also heard a lot of broken tail stories from my veterinarian.

But you must accept there's a risk of injury with any dog, and simply removing the offending item isn't necessarily a good thing. Your friend's dog's injury may have been an isolated accident. We can't advocate for removal of all dogs' legs, simply because they can be broken.

I had read that Great Danes were originally bred to hunt wild boars. The ears were cropped to prevent them from being caught on thorns while chasing the boars.

I have a Dane and chose not to crop his ears. They can suffer damage from their ear canals being exposed to wind. My Dane lost a hind leg in a tornado also so a bit of sad irony there.

Dane breeder here. You'd be surprised what interesting combinations come out! My parents and I used to have a harlequin that had puppies with a harlequin sire, and what came out was awesome! One was mantle, but the regions that were darker were brindle with dark brown spots. That one is most vividly in my memory for how unique he was :)
