Every kind of music sucks except the kind I like!

[–]JustKevinNeal 43 points44 points ago

Music wasn't started by any means with traditional instruments. It took time and lots of experimenting to find things that produced harmonic sounds that went well with other instruments. Just because you don't like the music that they play does not, by any means, mean it isn't music. A MacBook can produce the sound of a piano, so that means it isn't real? I believe that you can make music with anything. I don't like a load of artists, but that doesn't mean I am going to say they aren't artists. You can consider what ever you want to be "real" music, but music will always and forever be anything pleasant to a humans eardrums.

[–]VelocityVandetta 6 points7 points ago

Thank you.

[–]purplestofthepurples 8 points9 points ago

I see your point, but it's just a joke.

[–]Sentry81 2 points3 points ago

I have completely ignored rap of the past 4-5 years.. I've found myself listening to Tribe Called Quest, Gang Starr and older hip hop.. It was about sense.. not cents.. Not too big on dubstep however, but since i don't listen to it enough I can't really judge it.

[–]Advicetruck 0 points1 point ago

If you've ignored hip hop of the last few years in favour of golden era stuff, you've got a lot of catching up to do. There's a hell of a lot of talent lying underneath the surface.

[–]Sentry81 0 points1 point ago

True, a lot of the good stuff you won't find on the radio though.

[–]Advicetruck 0 points1 point ago

Find the right radio station, my man. Even my small town has an alternative radio station. Check out Deaf in the Family, btw.

[–]Sentry81 0 points1 point ago

I will give em' a look.. I'm in Dallas so there's the two main rap stations, one decent alternative, and the rest play the top 20, but if you listen to them they cycle between the top 5..

[–]Sailortight 2 points3 points ago

This is the best damn thing I've ever seen.

[–]jpdehart 9 points10 points ago

also, repost

[–]CombatBeaver 1 point2 points ago

i wonder how many crosses lil wayne wears at any given time

[–]VanillaFever 1 point2 points ago

I for one, like lil Wayne.

[–]InterwebCeleb 5 points6 points ago

I'm sorry.

[–]Claypool2112 -2 points-1 points ago

Sorry because they like music that you don't?

[–]oddlyaveragejoe -3 points-2 points ago

Like, maybe.

[–]Judge_Syd 0 points1 point ago

I love how downvoted you are for sharing an opinion which is in no way offensive. Tha Carter IV was good as fuck

[–]DK_Pooter 0 points1 point ago

I never got what was wrong with skrillex. I kind of like some of his music.

[–]Brainderailment 1 point2 points ago

I hate those two guys, but anything can technically be a musical instrument. http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/musical+instrument?s=t

[–]Bandgeekof15 1 point2 points ago

[–]mikesername 2 points3 points ago

To be fair, Skrillex is definitely a lot more musically versed than Lil Wayne.

[–]Bazing1980 6 points7 points ago

Actually Wayne can play the drums and guitar. I've seen him do both, competently enough.

[–]TetraCleric 0 points1 point ago

Skrillex can also play the drums and guitar. And I can guarantee he's a better guitar player than Tunechi.

[–]Bazing1980 0 points1 point ago

I don't know who Tunechi is.

[–]kyzfrintin 0 points1 point ago

And Skrillex can play piano and sing.

[–]Bazing1980 0 points1 point ago

Well that's cool. I wasn't really making an argument for or against either of them, just pointing out what I know. I don't think I've ever even heard a Skrillex song.

[–]Fortehlulz33 0 points1 point ago

Here's one from his band when he was Sonny Moore, From First to Last. They're alright. I like them.

[–]Swagtastical 0 points1 point ago

I agree. a lot of skrillex's songs can be played on piano, or really whatever instrument you want. as for the drops and breakdowns, think of those as percussion.

I don't listen to lil' wayne so I have no comment on his work.

[–]talitus 0 points1 point ago

Doesn't really say much.

[–]Dazanan -2 points-1 points ago

Don't lump everyone in with "our generation" like that... Were not all high school kids that think skrillex and lilwayne are actual artists...

[–]wrhslax1996 -1 points0 points ago

another high schooler... i went through the rap phase in third grade. got over it pretty fast.

[–]instarage 0 points1 point ago

Why aren't they artists? Explain this to me.

[–]Fortehlulz33 0 points1 point ago

Young Money is a business. Music is a business. They do what they do best in order to get their income: music. You can't be mad at someone for doing something they love. It's legal.

[–]MrIste 0 points1 point ago

Highschooler that doesn't like dubstep or rap

You must really be a unique snowflake to have a different opinion than others.

REPOST

[–]B-Timmay 0 points1 point ago

Although I agree with the general idea, of your generations most-famous artists not being known for being able to play any instruments, this "problem" has been going for several generations. I think it started when non-classical music was invented.

Oh yeah, also: I hate how people assume i like skrillex (or dubstep), when they figure out I produce DnB...

[–]FadedAsAlways -1 points0 points ago

I think wayne knows how to play the guitar...

[–]MrIste 0 points1 point ago

And the drums.

[–]Kustumkyle 0 points1 point ago

He thinks so too. But he can't.

[–]EmuKamikaze -2 points-1 points ago

No lil' wayne aytotune isn't an instrument either.

[–]iGotChubs4You[!] -3 points-2 points ago

I hate the ignorance of people who think producing music via computer is easy and 'not music'. if you think this then you are a dick and we shant be friends.

[–]AllYourBase3 1 point2 points ago

oh no whatever shall I do without the friendship of "iGotChubs4You"

[–]iGotChubs4You[!] -4 points-3 points ago

Ignorance

[–]darkviper039 -1 points0 points ago

I hate your generation too, don't worry

[–]Panzi_Master -2 points-1 points ago

No T-Pain, auto tune is not a instrument.

[–]godofallcows 1 point2 points ago

His voice is the instrument, the rest is changes in the output. It's the same as a guitar pedal. Now turn that bravery down, we know you don't like him.

[–]PastaOfMuppets 1 point2 points ago

This is a good point. I don't think I have ever heard anyone refer to an effects pedal as an instrument rather than a tool. Not even shoegaze players think this, and the genre almost entirely revolves around effects.

Though sometimes you can create tones with pedals sans guitar, using feedback loops and so on.

[–]godofallcows 1 point2 points ago

I saw a shoegaze band the other night. Strange group of people, but interesting music nonetheless. The guys just improvised literally everything.

[–]PastaOfMuppets 1 point2 points ago

They were strange people you say? That's strange.

[–]godofallcows 1 point2 points ago

Lol the guy I was talking to after he played had a serious body high going on, he enjoyed playing it and that is what matters.

[–]PastaOfMuppets 1 point2 points ago

I might have been wrong about the "pedals aren't instruments" thing

[–]godofallcows -2 points-1 points ago

The dude from Skrillez was a lead vocalist, and Lil Wayne plays guitar and drums.

This post is bad and you should feel bad. By this logic Frank Sinatra was not a musician.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

the point of music is to make people feel. according to one of the greats of classical music's golden age, 'music is anything that can make a complete stranger break down in tears'.

skrillez (or however you say it) likely wasn't a musician. i suspect he is a composer, a bit like bach- very polished.

lil wayne can play drums well, but not guitar (or tonal percussion). but overall there is a small semantic difference which this entire thing hinges on; which is what music is.

music as classically defined can't be recorded. but allot of people refer to records as music. and so within that divergence of meaning, the word becomes an inherent strawman.

so why do people disagree? because music classically must be impromptu, meaningful, emotional, and entirely dependent on a person's ability to create beauty in real time- to summon a storm from a clarinet. but people abuse the word to include compositions, live records, studio records, sheet music and similar.

the people you mention may or may not be musicians. it depends on whether you are referring to an organic moment in time, or a scripted moment. frank sinatra was a musician, but not through his records.

[–]Hammerfist_Pucconi 0 points1 point ago

Wrong, sir. Skrillex used to be in a band called From First To Last. Look them up. They aren't awful, but that's my opinion. He is a musician. No questions.

[–]Fortehlulz33 1 point2 points ago

He was the lead singer, IIRC. He's alright.

[–]TetraCleric 0 points1 point ago

He also played backup guitar, and has a guitar duet with their lead guitarist in a few songs.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

my mistake, never heard of him/her before. there is allot of ranting about people who use midi instruments as being inferrior to percussion/strings (due to something about sound control) being inferrior again to woodwinds and brass (due to pianists and strings musicians not "need ambusher") so i assumed he was a midi guy (who preprograms songs) being told off by an 'elitist'.

again, my apology/mistake, thanks for the correction. i have no idea what this is about then.

[–]Amadameus -2 points-1 points ago

You used a different screen cap for the second and third frames of Squidward. I like that, even though it's a tiny detail it helps make the comic fluid.

[–]Claypool2112 4 points5 points ago

I wouldn't be giving the OP credit. He/she didn't make this.

[–]Crossthebreeze -1 points0 points ago

I don't get it. Is this an actual quote from the show? Or did you just use a cartoon character to point out what popular entertainers you think are shit, yet you call them "our" generation.

[–]Lhabs -1 points0 points ago

This is always going to happen in society. Older generations are going to be as welcome to new forms of music that they may not like. That by any means doesn't mean it isn't music.

[–]Toyotaobsession -1 points0 points ago

[–]asmel -3 points-2 points ago

MAYBE if people would freaking pass down to their kids the classics they wouldn't be growing up so deluded. Even if you personally do not like certain music, pass it on if it has historical musical relevance. My kids are 11, 9, and 5 and at least the older two can tell you why Elvis or The Ramones were musically important. My oldest sings Beatles songs and my middle one loves Rage Against the Machine.

Start them off with classical and take them through the generations. Whenever something significant comes on the radio I give them a music lesson. Do not ever allow your kids to hear Hendrix without telling them who he is and what he did. Don't have your kids listen to "moves like jagger" without telling them who the hell jagger is!

[–]MrIste 0 points1 point ago

Or maybe we could just let children listen to whatever they want and think for themselves.

[–]asmel 1 point2 points ago

I do allow my kids to listen to what they want; I just like them to be educated and informed.

[–]AceConnors -3 points-2 points ago

Skrillz actually was a lead vocalist in the band From First to Last before he started making amazing dubstep

[–]godofallcows -1 points0 points ago

A lot of Skrillex haters, all you have is downvotes, even though ypi made a perfect point. I enjoy his music, so hate on everybody.
