Maybe I am just stupid, but GOD DAMN this ad could have used some punctuation marks! My brain tried to read it as one long sentence with a shit ton of adjectives and nouns, but absolutely no verbs. Get some colons up in this bitch!

[–]xecosine 63 points64 points ago

Have you seen German words?

[–]mmmtoastmmm 97 points98 points ago

Rindfleischetikettierungsüberwachungsaufgabenübertragungsgesetz

[–]Kalisto_Gatsby 46 points47 points ago

Beef labeling monitor task transfer law ;) you are welcome.

[–]Abovecloudn9ne 8 points9 points ago

I have just come to the realization that I will never be able to learn German. sigh.

[–]dietbroccoli 23 points24 points ago

German legalese is not every day German. Also, it's concise, it just lacks spaces. Like instead of "watch" they say "wristclock."

[–]onipos 17 points18 points ago

well, arm band clock really. The best words are the zeugs. Zeug means thing so you get things like fire thing for lighter and flight thing for airplane.

[–]threeminus 7 points8 points ago

Don't forget drums! Gotta love playing the "hit things".

[–]ninnspinn 9 points10 points ago

and a toy is a "play thing"... never thought of it this way before! when you're german you usually don't think about how weird the language can be sometimes...

[–]onipos 11 points12 points ago

and to think, if you didn't speak english this would never have happened. “Wer fremde Sprachen nicht kennt, weiß nichts von seiner eigenen.”

[–]TheButtghost 1 point2 points ago

i read somewhere that first person shooters in german was translated to "ego shooters"

[–]fforw 1 point2 points ago

That is correct.

[–]epsenohyeah 1 point2 points ago

I am German and never realized the hilarity behind -zeugs-words. Thanks.

[–]10b-5 3 points4 points ago

It's only their excessive use of compound words that are complicated really. The Scandinavians do the same thing.

Makes interesting crosswords, at least.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

Can you explain the reasoning behind that incredibly long word? I'm interested in learning German.

[–]Andaru 1 point2 points ago

German just sticks words together. If you break it up it's like this:
Rindfleisch = beef meat
etikettierungs = of labeling
überwachungs = of monitoring
aufgaben = tasks
übertragungs = of transfering
gesetz = law

then read it backwards.

[–]AnomalyNexus 3 points4 points ago

Damn. Read it 3x now & still confused.

Beef labeling supervisory job transfer law?

[–]10b-5 2 points3 points ago

Delegation, not transfer. Otherwise, you've got it pretty much spot on - albeit a bit shortened.

[–]roberto32 2 points3 points ago

Cattle marking and beef labeling supervision duties delegation law

[–]druturn 9 points10 points ago

That's the kicker, I speak German and lived there, yet still didn't read it right!

[–]TheInternetHivemind 9 points10 points ago

geschwindigkeitsbegrenzung

[–]MrMastodon 15 points16 points ago

Translation: "speed limit"

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points ago

Geschwindigkeit = Velocity

Begrenzung = Limit

[–]DieFappy 1 point2 points ago

Zustandsübergangsdiagramm

[–]B_S_O_D 3 points4 points ago

Can't compete with Polish.

[–]10b-5 18 points19 points ago

Hitler disagreed.

Too soon?

[–]hitlers_ghost_ 1 point2 points ago

No... I'm not offended.

[–]10b-5 1 point2 points ago

I appreciate that. Sieg Heil, sir. Sieg heil indeed.

[–]kuba_10 1 point2 points ago

How come? Polish has spaces, at least: ograniczenie prędkości

[–]mmmtoastmmm 13 points14 points ago

It's the placement of the adjectives. If the sign read

Gay Foreign Minister

Female Chancellor

Vietnamese Health Minister

it wouldn't need punctuation.

[–]the_empire_of_death 20 points21 points ago

Yes...I read it all as one sentence, was so confused. Also, the title of this post makes it sound like Germany usually has stupid ads, but this time it was clever.

[–]goblinpiledriver 25 points26 points ago

I read it as:

Foreign Minister

Gay Chancellor

Female Heathministervietnamese

[–]CaeliAria 5 points6 points ago

That's not what it says? I can't read it any other way.

[–]johnrod32 4 points5 points ago

Germany: get up in this bitch's colon.

[–]OCELLARIS_CLOWNING 5 points6 points ago

I thought this was describing a single extremely talented vietnamese lesbian.

[–]lt_hindu 1 point2 points ago

I guess they aren't that smart. I mean I get their message but if your whole appraisal on your leader not being a white Christian as merit to lead rather than ability. I'm fine being in my land of opportunity.

[–]jonosvision 39 points40 points ago

Thanks imgur, because of your glitch i just spent 5 minutes looking for german words in a league of legends screen shot.

[–]Alchemilla 4 points5 points ago

Mine was a bunch of pictures of African animals. I wondered "How exactly does this pertain to Germany??" and spent an embarrassingly long time trying to figure it out. Fuck.

[–]rehnis 2 points3 points ago

Same, I thought I was stupid because the top comments made no sense :(

[–]spoolio 3 points4 points ago

This would be a clever ad for Germany if I could figure out what was German about it.

[–]YNot1989 344 points345 points ago

Must America point out once again that we have a Biracial President, Irish-Catholic VP, Female Secretary of State, and an Orange Speaker of the House?

[–]alien6 85 points86 points ago

And a Japanese amputee president pro tempore, four female cabinet members, and three gay congressmen. Plus a bunch of jews.

[–]philipTraum 69 points70 points ago

So many jews.

[–]miborovsky 110 points111 points ago

Germans, take note. Jews.

[–]DieFappy 20 points21 points ago

Jews you say? Noted. Moving on.

[–]mmmtoastmmm 16 points17 points ago

[–]gijane480 12 points13 points ago

why is he dressed as charlie chaplin

[–]LastEmperor 29 points30 points ago

"Amputee" is selling it short. It was torn apart by a German grenade, then he pried a grenade from the severed arms, tossed it back towards the Germans, killed a bunch of them, continued to kill a bunch more with a Thompson submachine gun held in his left arm while parts of his right arms dangled off, then continued to give orders until the battle was finished. He also got hit with a sniper round to the stomach right before the entire thing.

And he's still alive as the longest serving Senator in Congress. That guy isn't human.

[–]alien6 3 points4 points ago

Him being an amazing war hero is something to applaud, but war heroes gaining political offices aren't anything new.

[–]TSguy 3 points4 points ago

He has held that seat for a long, long time. If you think Hawaiians have been reelecting him for decades based purely on his heroism 70 years ago you're sorely mistaken.

[–]Patius 360 points361 points ago

Plus, America is very tolerant of the mentally ill. Just look at the republican primaries!

[–]necbone 57 points58 points ago

Nice

[–]Burnsey235 53 points54 points ago

I'm a Republican, but I'm going to have to give you this. Well done sir

[–]ImpairmentLoss 70 points71 points ago

I'm a Republican and I think you are pandering for Karma.

[–]Articunozard 59 points60 points ago

I'm a republican panda.

[–]cyNickalCyn 13 points14 points ago

Can I be a Sexual Harassment Panda?

Oh the birds, and the bees and the willow trees...

[–]dogsarentedible 12 points13 points ago

....Sexual harassment paaandaaaaa

[–]BlazeUp 2 points3 points ago

Who explains sexual harasment to you and me?

[–]mayonesa 1 point2 points ago

Which oddly rhymes with SODOMY

[–]Burnsey235 9 points10 points ago

I just thought it was a funny comment. You have to admit, the primaries were a fiasco.

[–]moglum 5 points6 points ago

The speaker of the house is an orange?

[–]shutupjoey 4 points5 points ago

And the house is mostly prunes.

[–]frieswithketchup 1 point2 points ago

The annoying orange

[–]c0wsumer 28 points29 points ago

I'm so sick of people saying "Irish-Catholic" is some sort of minority. They are white. They need to get over it.

[–]caracal12 20 points21 points ago

There has only been one Catholic president, JFK, and I think only 3 presidential nominees, including JFK. Catholics may not be a social minority, but they are a political minority.

[–]HonorableJudgeIto 9 points10 points ago

Guess you never heard this story?

On Sept. 12, 1960, presidential candidate John F. Kennedy gave a major speech to the Greater Houston Ministerial Association, a group of Protestant ministers, on the issue of his religion. At the time, many Protestants questioned whether Kennedy's Roman Catholic faith would allow him to make important national decisions as president independent of the church. Kennedy addressed those concerns before a skeptical audience of Protestant clergy. The following is a transcript of Kennedy's speech: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=16920600

[–]d15nt_ban_me_again 10 points11 points ago

Nobody considers the irish or the catholics to be minorities or oppressed now. But historically, the irish and catholics faced persecution. The ku klux klan targeted catholics. You have to remember that america was mostly protestant and many denominations of protestantism viewed the pope as the antichrist. Also, the irish were presecuted - "no irish or dogs allowed" or "irish need not apply". And the fact that an irish catholic became president back in the early 60s was almost as big a deal as obama becoming president. Also, "white race" back in the day did not mean what it does not. It specifically referred to anglo-saxon protestants and more broadly germanic/northern europeans. Southern europeans, jews, eastern europeans, irish were not considered "white".

[–]YNot1989 18 points19 points ago

They were also some of the first Slaves in America.

[–]bloopbleepbloop1000 1 point2 points ago

Sure 'twas all in good fun.

[–]Wetkeys 7 points8 points ago

Having light skin doesn't make you part of some special group.. That's racist. That's sort of like saying that all dark-skinned people are black. I mean... I'm not sure that I can put into words how offensive your argument is.

Anyway, Irish-Catholics are minority and they face discrimination as well as stereotypes. It isn't as bad as "Irish Need Not Apply" anymore, but that's because the world is a bit less ignorant and you don't often see "Need not apply" signs these days.

[–]smoakme 2 points3 points ago

Irish-Sober. NOW that's a minority!

Am I right?

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]YNot1989 1 point2 points ago

America has lots of Catholics (they're the largest single denomination of Christianity in the US), so they are often categorized based on cultural heritage, like Polish-Catholics, Hispanic-Catholics, Italian-Catholics, etc.

[–]novafire08 10 points11 points ago

and an Orange Oompa Loompa Speaker of the House?

FTFY

[–]communistjack 8 points9 points ago

crying oompa loompa

[–]Boozhau 5 points6 points ago

Doopity-do.

[–]poompt 1 point2 points ago

They prefer Loompan-Americans.

[–]WitAdmistFolly 0 points1 point ago

If we try to look at this rationally and completely you must admit that the US is a long way behind Germany in the diversity found in politics. Yes there is a female secretary of state, but congress and the senate are only 17% female, compared to 37% in the German parliament. Yes there are three gay congressmen, but that works out as ~1/2%, when the national average is 7 times that.

[–]YNot1989 19 points20 points ago

Ok, gender and sexual orientation I'll give you; but in terms of ethnic diversity there's no contest. I didn't even mention our Lebanese Transportation Secretary, Hispanic Interior and Labor secretaries, Chinese Energy Secretary, and Japanese Veterans Affairs Secretary.

[–]derkajihad 12 points13 points ago

Ask the Turks what they think about German diversity.

[–]pius3nd 1 point2 points ago

I would assume that the Turks care relatively little, and the Germans with turkish background would be in favor of it?

[–]Jasonindaskyz 1 point2 points ago

yeah but how many jews and blacks ya got

[–]sge_fan 2 points3 points ago

The first three are not noteworthy, but an orange person as the Speaker, now that's something! (I hope i didn't make him cry)

[–]_Personage 11 points12 points ago

So confused.... I see a League of Legends post-game screen.

[–]dudemeister5000 2 points3 points ago

Yeah me too, so I thought comments would clear it up but there goes more talk about german stuff. Totally not getting it

[–]AnomalyNexus 18 points19 points ago

Rehosted for those what can't access it: http://i.imgur.com/AaGfW.jpg

[–]mischi 25 points26 points ago

For all the CTRL+F people: Mirror.

[–]ScruffySteez 3 points4 points ago

you are a good person

[–]womg 9 points10 points ago

Thanks, I was seeing some scoreboard for a game and was REALLY confused.

what?

[–]CummingEverywhere 2 points3 points ago

I got this too. Same thing happened for a couple of other links too.

[–]SeaReally 5 points6 points ago

Oh lord that MF build. Game is league of legends btw.

[–]Furiuso 1 point2 points ago

I got this too. Sat there trying to find the puns in their names for about ten minutes and now i feel dumb.

[–][deleted] 71 points72 points ago

Truly tolerant people don't feel the need to brag about how tolerant they are.

[–]slyder565 26 points27 points ago

This thread is full of delicious reddit irony.

[–]fushi-tarazu 4 points5 points ago

See top comment.

[–]soylent_absinthe 12 points13 points ago

Why I detest the "diversity" movement - you tout someone's differences instead of their strengths.

"Oh YEAH? Well MY president is blacker than YOUR president!"

[–]SRaff922 24 points25 points ago

I think "get over it, it's been 70 years" is a far better slogan for Germany.

[–]pissoutofmyass 10 points11 points ago

70 years is nothing to history.

I think, "Look, we're using America as the metric to measure a country's progress, which means we're actually idolizing America and hating it at the same time. This means we are a confused nation," would probably work better.

edit: lol at the line of butthurt below

[–]Rapetacle 4 points5 points ago

"Iran is evil because they don't respect human rights. You see, we are the beacon of civilisation, and if somebody looks at us wrong, we're going to torture them until they confess they're witches...err I mean terrorists. Also, the Islam attacked us"

[–]DarqWolff 3 points4 points ago

Using something as a metric != idolizing it

[–]Salacha 28 points29 points ago

What is this ad trying to prove? That German people shouldn't move?

[–]Canuck_in_Ger 15 points16 points ago

Right - that's why its in English... to convince Germans not to leave

[–]alcakd 22 points23 points ago

It says "Come to Germany". So I assume it's to promote immigration?

[–]TheIndigoSky 17 points18 points ago

So long as you're not Turkish...

[–]whatever5390 2 points3 points ago

I think Kreuzberg would like to have a word with you.

[–]EuterpeAthena 8 points9 points ago

Yes... I'm not sure why Germany is advertising this... it is really difficult to permanently settle in Germany, and you will never be considered actually "German" by the people there.

[–]Zerosan 2 points3 points ago

I think it's partly due to the fact that quite a few professionals/experts seem to leave germany because their jobs are paid quite a bit better in other countries.

[–]rbnc 1 point2 points ago

That's only if you just come here and don't learn to speak German or make an effort at all, just like most of the people I know who've moved here. I'm the only one, of all the expats I know, who has bothered to learn.

I've lived here since September 2010, I have a German job, friends and girlfriend. Do my friends consider me to be German; no. I am permanently settled: yes and it wasn't difficult.

[–]Salacha 5 points6 points ago

Ah didn't see that small text. if this is your reason or immigrating you have terrible priorities.

[–]ByJiminy 9 points10 points ago

Assuaging my white guilt is my No. 1 priority when it comes to my preferred country of residence.

[–]DieFappy 3 points4 points ago

Immigrating to a land of opportunities? I think someone who does this has their priorities pretty straight.

[–]DarqWolff 2 points3 points ago

I don't understand how anyone can have their priorities not-straight. They're not your priorities, they're that other guy's, so who the fuck cares? It's personal preference, there's no way to rationally call it wrong.

[–]Guest_Acct 94 points95 points ago

Germany: Overcompensating for WWII since WWII.

[–]Illivah 12 points13 points ago

Nazi's (and more specifically, hitler) are portrayed in video games, movies, music, TV shows, and even modern politics to be words synonymous with very powerful evil (heck, didn't DOOM have hitler as the ruler of the hell-beasts?). Germany... is probably goiong to overcompensate for this for a long time to come.

[–]hitlers_ghost_ 1 point2 points ago

And Hydra... those guys knew how to party.

[–]ancvz 7 points8 points ago

Damn I'd really love to try my luck in Germany.

[–]agdoll 18 points19 points ago

Ich mag

[–]im_too_literal 3 points4 points ago

[–]kebo99 9 points10 points ago

[–]BlackLiteAttack 6 points7 points ago

[–]The_Fuad 1 point2 points ago

agdoll - I Like

im_too_literal - I like this also

[–]im_makingfunofyou 33 points34 points ago

President BLACK

Secretary of State FEMALE

Vice President RETARDED

Your move, Germany.

[–]doasyoupleaseorelse 3 points4 points ago

And all these things are irrelevant to actually running the country.

It seems they totally left out blacks with blond hair, albinos, and 6 fingered people. Only when Germany has people like that running it will I really want to move there. /s

[–]RunningInSquares 2 points3 points ago

According to imgur, Germany is advertising for League of Legends now.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]yesukai 46 points47 points ago

Yeah, where in the US we just have a black president, female secretary of state, and 3 openly gay members of congress.

This image was stupid last time it was posted, and it's still stupid now.

[–]Hack0201 24 points25 points ago

it would have been fine if it said "And you think america is the only land of opportunity?". The way it was written comes off as an attack against the US rather than a promotion for Germany.

[–]Josef_Superflip 0 points1 point ago

Which goes along well with widespread anti-Americanism in Germany.

[–]ScruffySteez 21 points22 points ago

While people are being critical about the USA in Germany, it's not true that there is widespread "anti-Americanism" in Germany.

[–]fappyday 2 points3 points ago

Don't forget dozens of closeted gay politicians. Remember that whole page boy thing about 2 years ago?

[–]yesukai 2 points3 points ago

I would make an educated guess that the number of politicians that are gay is probably one in twenty. Same as the normal population.

[–]sipsyrup 1 point2 points ago

As well as a lesbian Mayor for the 4th largest city (Houston).

[–]HyperSpaz 1 point2 points ago

Trumped by the gay mayor of our capitol, I think you'll find.

(Seriously, this is stupid.)

[–]Blunkus 7 points8 points ago

Yeah last time I checked, the US does not have ads to convince people to live here...

[–]zaner 2 points3 points ago

Ich liebe Deutschland

[–]DieFappy 2 points3 points ago

This is one giant repost. Plus, our health minister is now our secretary of commerce.

[–]malvoliosf 2 points3 points ago

Yeah, too bad other countries don't advance people on the basis of sex, orientation, and national origin.

[–]Tehadam 2 points3 points ago

As an American, I wouldn't mind living in Germany. Seems like a lovely place.

[–]Adrexani 2 points3 points ago

well its official, imgur is fucking up, i'm getting something to do with gaming and not germans

[–]WindSandStars 2 points3 points ago

[–]mayonesa 2 points3 points ago

ETHNIC GERMANS: REMOVED

[–]appletart 6 points7 points ago

This ad makes it seem like they've overcome disabilities.

[–]PositivelyClueless 6 points7 points ago

Minister of Finance is praplegic. paraplegit. parapelgit. DAMNIT. He sits in a wheelchair.

[–]everflow 2 points3 points ago

Since they have become politicians, I guess they found a way to live with them.

[–]ImpairmentLoss 5 points6 points ago

This is so stupid.

[–]Sadist 8 points9 points ago

lol @ all the americans getting butthurt and waving their dicks trying to prove the ad wrong.

[–]lonelygamer 5 points6 points ago

The image shows up as an I-phone background confirmation. weird. it used to be the Poster everyone is talking about. Maybe I'm crazy.

[–]LurkIMYourFather 5 points6 points ago

And just to make it clear, the foreign minister is a loser and the health minister is a wimp.

[–]everflow 1 point2 points ago

Their party sucks. I cannot be proud of my country's tolerance when the party they are members of is based on sucking-up-to-the-rich douchebaggery.

[–]Canuck_in_Ger 4 points5 points ago

Right - its trying to convince Germans to stay in Germany?! That's why its in English.

[–]A_Moist_Towelette 1 point2 points ago

Repost, grumble...grumble.

[–]ThomasRaith 1 point2 points ago

Well, if my close study of movies and television shows is any indicator, here in the US all of our judges and chiefs of police are black. So there!

[–]Rapetacle 1 point2 points ago

But they all die first....and two weeks from retirement. Sheeeeet

[–]IzziTheEpic 1 point2 points ago

Am I the only one who sees a goddamn I-phone background? Is imgur messing up?

[–]Hi_Im_Insanity 1 point2 points ago

And it's in English...

[–]Ekiph 1 point2 points ago

Yeah, until you see their video game laws...

[–]drshavargo 1 point2 points ago

For a second I thought it was all one sentence so I was just like "wat".

[–]adamzep91 1 point2 points ago

Yes... very clever. (What came up when I clicked it.)

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

I'd love to move to Germany, I doubt they would give me a visa to stay though. Anything to get out of this shitty backwards country I'm in now.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

Yes, Font size. Interesting.

[–]Pomnom 1 point2 points ago

Well, technically the "health minister" can not be a Vietnamese. Maybe ex-Vietnamese or former-Vietnamese (I don't know the correct term) but I bet he/she has gone through neutralization process and became a German.

[–]Splarnst 1 point2 points ago

Vietnamese-born. One doesn't stop being Vietnamese in the cultural or ethnic sense by a legal process.

[–]Multisyllabic 1 point2 points ago

Clever? More like unintelligible.

[–]cherryjuiceandvodka 1 point2 points ago

the australian version would be:

female, atheist, unmarried, immigrant prime minister female, lesbian, mother, malaysian-chinese heritage, immigrant finance minister female govenor-general

if you live in tasmania it's plausible practically every one of your elected officials is female, same with QLD and NSW until recent elections. local councillor > state mp > premier. also federal mp > prime minister.

[–]sgtcotrez 1 point2 points ago

President black?

[–]xeonrage 1 point2 points ago

oh, this pic again

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points ago

Why would it be weird for a country to have leaders that represented the nations majority

[–]Sturmgewehr 4 points5 points ago

As a white straight male, I can tell you my homosexual, female, minority counterparts do a better job than me no matter what in all skill sets. I am where I am today because I'm just part of the larger conspiracy. Praise them.

[–]thenewfrost 4 points5 points ago

Germany: Where punctuation isn't a thing.

[–]AnomalyNexus 1 point2 points ago

No they've got punctuation coming out of their ears...its just that they are attempting to communicate with Americans here...

[–]HyperSpaz 2 points3 points ago

America can have Angie, Guido and Fipsi if they like. We're done with them.

[–]AgentUmlaut 5 points6 points ago

Bah America's immigration woes is to Germans' racism towards Turks yawn

[–]rbnc 1 point2 points ago

So weird how people think that Germans are racist towards Turks. I never heard anything bad said about them since I've lived here...

[–]heiter 3 points4 points ago

I am not from Germany but from Austria.

America is the land of opportunity for the rich. In Germany you can make something out of yourself with no money at all but skill. This is not true for america. The social mobility in the US is pathetic. But keep lying yourself you are #1. That way you dont have to face your weaknesses, you dont have to change, to improve. After all you are #1 in your imagination.

I had the chance to to work for a short while in america and never have i met so bigoted, hateful and backward people.

[–]deathbytray 2 points3 points ago

And you think America is the land of opportunity?

Let's see...

  • Current president, African-American.
  • Next president, Mormon.
  • Previous president, mentally challanged.
  • One before that, a chubby chaser.

So, yes. I think we still are.

[–]StackShitThatHigh 1 point2 points ago

He was inarticulate. I think Bush suffered from a stroke and developed a speech impediment. Something very similar happened to an uncle of mine. Have you see him in him Governor debates? He was very well spoken. Even though I vehemently disagree with most of his viewpoints, I could help but be marveled by what a great speaker he once was.
