I've never seen Mr. Bean, but grew up with Blackadder. Incidentally, Blackadder was also the first place I encountered Hugh Laurie.

I came here to say exactly that. To anyone who only knows Rowan Atkinson as Mr. Bean, go watch Black Adder right now. Seriously, right this second. Watch it on Netflix, download it, do whatever you have to do. This is possibly the greatest comedy series ever, and anyone who has not seen it is seriously missing out.

While I agree that The Black Adder is super and fab etc, I understand why it appeals mainly to the British, but Mr Bean is international. Many of the characters in The Black Adder will mean little to other nationalities.

I have to respectfully disagree. I am an American, and I absolutely love Black Adder. Like a lot of British Comedy, I think it has quite widespread appeal.

If you wish to identify Rowan Atkinson as Mr Bean that's ok. A shame, since he's one of the finest comic actors in the world, but ok.

But I'm not sure it's fair to describe this as a 'generic atheist quote'. Rowan Atkinson made a very important stand for freedom of speech in the UK when the church tried to have laws introduced that would involve making fun of religion a hate crime. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/4073997.stm In my opinion, it was very brave of him to make such a stand in a country obsessed with political correctness, as the UK is (rightly or wrongly!).

Rowan Atkinson also has a Masters of Science in Electrical Engineering from the Queen's College, Oxford, completed 1979.

So he's an engineer that happens to have done some acting and comedy recently. Probably smarter than the majority of people you're likely to meet on the street today.

For comedians like Rowan Atkinson? They're intelligent, and well-educated.

Basically, Christianity isn't taken very seriously by most English people. I think "cultural Christian" would be the right term - it's part of the culture, but not necessarily something people actually believe in. It's really not a very big leap from that to atheism, given the right push. A decent education would probably do the trick.
