My favourite thing about this is that it appears to be a fish.

[–]ns0[S] 0 points1 point ago

I didn't believe you until I watched it again. Even funnier the second time around.

[–]skaberry12 0 points1 point ago

The first time I watched it I thought it was a fish... Glad to know I'm not alone.

Why is the cameraman not running also?

[–]PutridBile 14 points15 points ago

Notice how the camera moves when everyone begins running. I'm under the impression that he did run with the rest of them and the camera is on a tripod or something.

Then how did the tape survive the explosion?

[–]Batolemaeus 10 points11 points ago

What explosion? That was a dud.

[–]Hesitris 0 points1 point ago

My guess is that it might not have exploded. They just didn't want to take any chances. It probably later got detonated from a safe distance. But that's all guesswork.

Usually mortars Don't explode until they've spun a certain amount of times. Since this one didn't go nearly as far as a mortar normally goes, chances are slim the detonator was tripped.

Where's an 0341 or whatever the Army calls their mortarmen? I want to know if that's even a possible misfire. I was under the impression that even a single mortar increment would've sent that thing thousands of feet.

[–]TheWill2Live 0 points1 point ago

I'm no soldier but I'm pretty sure there's a minimum distance before the explosive becomes active and also I'm fairly certain that the round needs to land on it's head to be triggered which it doesn't look like it's going to from the angle at which it left the tube.

0341 is a Marine mortarman, 11C is an Army one. Most likely it was a misfire. You are correct about a minimum safe distance but also it depends on what type of fuse it uses. The most common fuse would be the point fuse meaning it has to land on it's nose to go off, which (more than likely) these guys are using. I would still back of for 5 -10 min. because if it misfires the same person that made it might have messed something else up. Better safe than sorry.

[–]TheWill2Live 0 points1 point ago

That is true haha in which case I'd move on to another box of ammunition. ;]

[–]HashRunningRapist 0 points1 point ago

Oh, no no. I understand how the explosive cone needs to be crumpled to detonate (ideally) I'm speaking more to how the round could just pop out of the mortar. There should have been so much explosive force behind it that it would have either left the barrel at an enormous rate of speed or or blown the barrel up. I'm a Marine rifleman, so I have a baseline understanding of how mortars work, their capabilities, and how to call for them as support. But even after calling my mortarmen friends they say they've never heard of something like this.

I would assume it's some serious malfunction in which only some of the propellant was ignited so that it barely went off. Either that or someone replaced their firing pin with a giant spring =]

[–]Vaginaterian 0 points1 point ago

Is there a video of this? I wonder if there is an explosion. If you look closely it is not a fish.

North Korea

WTF is wrong with my hoverzoom? This is what I see.

[–]Moses385 0 points1 point ago

[–]Eqchua -3 points-2 points ago

[–]kaige18 0 points1 point ago

"Man your stations, men. This one is going to the top*

5 minutes later

"ABORT! ABORT! GET THE HELL AWAY FROM THIS!"

[–][deleted] -5 points-4 points ago

Notice how the solider that put the mortar in, pushes the one holding the tube before he runs...

I think it's more of the fact that it was a live explosive device. It would seem to me that this is precisely the correct response; put distance between yourself and the device until a bomb disposal squad has neutralized it. After all, we just watched the mortar round suffer one malfunction (failure to launch correctly), do you really want to be standing next to it if/when it suffers a second failure (improper detonation).

TL;DR: running away from live explosives does not make one a dumbass.

[–]countlazypenis 2 points3 points ago

I was once on a thread full of people who simply could not grasp the fact that mortars are activated upon the tip of the device impacting a surface at high speed. T'was rather frustrating.
