I feel as if this image consists of multiple layers. The smaller layer of dots would have to move faster to compensate for the illusion of travelling at the same rate of the larger dots in order to maintain the perspective.

Covering the middle with your hand would only eliminate the slower moving dots and cause for only seeing the faster moving dots.

When you obscure the slow moving objects, your hand becomes the reference, and since it is not moving, the objects are perceived faster because they are moving very quickly relative to your hand.

Another interesting thing to do is getting the opposite effect -- making the particles appear slower. You can do this by making a circle with your hand around the center of the picture and looking at the space between!

Using RES to change the image size to the width of your fist, start at the bottom and slowly move up towards the top, you should be able to control the "speed" of you "flight" - you should also make cool noises as you fly through space because FUCK YA!
