As someone who lives in Minnesota--- Minneapolis' music scene is still the shit. :)

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points ago

As a classical musician, I must say that indeed it is true. And as a former metal guitarist, yep, also true. There are a number of organizations for classical music and ensembles and quite a few good music venues out there for other music.

[–]CMUber 0 points1 point ago

Classically trained musician here too! But I love EDM, and there is never a shortage of amazing shows for that in the cities as well!!

[–]MarleyandtheWhalers 7 points8 points ago

Can we get a Minneapolis karma train going?! Pretty please? Who else took lessons at MacPhail?

[–]BluesTruths 2 points3 points ago

I'm planning on moving to Minneapolis next month. Are there ever any street musicians out?

[–]BlondieMeliss 2 points3 points ago

I work downtown on Nicollet Ave. and there are ALWAYS street musicians during the summer - especially on Thursdays for Farmer's Market. Go for it - there's always room for talent.

[–]stereobot 3 points4 points ago

Not as many as you would think, but sometimes there are and they usually are surprisingly good. You'll pretty much always find them downtown. When I used to work downtown there would frequently be a guy playing saxaphone, the reverb from the sound bouncing off the buildings made it sound absolutely incredible.

You'll like it here, of all the places I've been I like Minneapolis the best with Seattle being a close second. You can get anywhere you need to go quickly but it doesn't feel like a small city.

Theyres a guy who sits really close to this spot and sings this little light of mine really loudly outside the target building

[–]Comrade_Falcon 1 point2 points ago

I see more in the skyways than on the street, usually some pretty good blues in there.

[–]CMUber 1 point2 points ago

Always in the skyways! I once stopped and listened to a violinist by Orchestra Hall for a good half an hour!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Not really.

[–]TheRollingBonesTheRollingBones 2 points3 points ago

Minneapolis' underground scene in the 80's was amazing. The Replacements and Husker Du, anyone?

[–]readingcarrot 1 point2 points ago

The greatest thing is, if there happens to be a place even as far out as the 'burbs lacking in some sort of music scene, one's quick to start up. My mom started up her own orchestra program when kids didn't have a place to play, and it's been amazing, locally supported, and growing the past 15-some years.

One time my friend went into a bar and happened to see Prince sitting in a corner near a couple of, who we could assume, bodyguards. My friend REALLY wanted to go say something - anything - to Prince while he had a chance. However, he had NO idea what to call him. The Artist Formally known as Prince? Prince? Female/Male Symbol thing? No idea.

Anyways, he built up the courage and decided to take a chance and go say hi. He walked up, took a breath and said "Are you... The Artist?" and Prince looked at him, looked at his shirt that had a DJing Monkey on it, pointed and said, "Monkey." That was it.

Moral of the story: I dunno.

Inspiring moral

[–]sheisaxombie 0 points1 point ago

I try my best.

[–]jasniejasnie 0 points1 point ago

That's either the best or the worst celebrity encounter ever.

[–]sagafood 23 points24 points ago

Never judge a book by its cover. This cat can ball.

...then he served us pancakes.

[–]PapaLeo 3 points4 points ago

What's that from?

Come purify yourself in the waters of Lake Minnetonka.

[–]nohopeleftforanyone -1 points0 points ago

That ain't Lake Minnetonka.

[–]andrewsmith1986 22 points23 points ago

If you are born in the 80's, there has got to be a 25% chance that Prince is your father.

[–]irrelephant31 7 points8 points ago

Or he was at least in the bedroom you were conceived in

[–]goodgolly 7 points8 points ago

He's so smooth he can wear a downvote necklace and still get upvoted.

[–]tokisushi 1 point2 points ago

I am glad I was not the only one to notice this

[–]BasinStBlues 3 points4 points ago

Why. Did. He not. Keep that Hair?

[–]PapaLeo 2 points3 points ago

I'd give my right nut to see Obama with that do.

[–]Super_Model_Citizen 2 points3 points ago

That seems like an extremely high price to pay to see some guy you've never met sport an afro.

[–]stevesy3 2 points3 points ago

That building is still there. I can't remember what is inside but that mural is like 4 stories tall and very recognizable.

[–]avbird 2 points3 points ago

Used to be Schmitt Music. My dad bought our piano there.

[–]irrelephant31 0 points1 point ago

That place is a whole bunch of awesome restaurants now that its Nicollet

[–]luke10_27 5 points6 points ago

Prince was born in 1958. I doubt this photo is from the early 70's. Maybe late 70's.

[–]tylersstandingonit[S] 2 points3 points ago

fair enough. It was more a guess since I couldn't find an exact date. The mural he's standing in front of went up in '72, so I sort of had that date stuck in my head.

[–]stereobot 2 points3 points ago

Is that Prince's mom in the background? She looks like she isn't satisfied. Something something doves cry.

[–]MidnightRasta 5 points6 points ago

check out his necklace, He was down voting before it was cool.

[–]bigplansisay 1 point2 points ago

Saw his welcome to America tour last year. That guy is so fucking talented it's sickening.

[–]OfficerMudkip 1 point2 points ago

Man, I loved The Commodores.

[–]xSGAx 1 point2 points ago

I don't see the bowl of grapes...

[–]LarryTheSatelliteGuy 0 points1 point ago

shoot the J, SHOOT IT

[–]secret_account_name 0 points1 point ago

Late 70s.

[–]PapaLeo 0 points1 point ago

I say mid-70's. Right behind The Man is a 1974 Ford LTD. Not likely that he'd be modeled with an outdated series.

[–]natural_resources 0 points1 point ago

Rick James tells the funniest stories about letting Rogers Nelson be the opening act on tour. The sex fiend autobio is better than david lee roth autobio.

[–]irrelephant31 0 points1 point ago

I used to valet into that lot... Place is chill, Valetting in the winter is not

[–]gnarlyrocks 0 points1 point ago

Saw him a couple of weeks ago.... fucking amazing!

[–]debbiedoesdallasonce 0 points1 point ago

he's also a really good guitarist actually. kinda surprised me, since a lot of his songs don't necessarily reflect that

[–]7Finger 0 points1 point ago

I once considered buying a keyboard from a guy who bought it from Prince. He said he had wiped off all of the cum stains. I declined.

[–]danielj820 0 points1 point ago

I want to know what that sheet music is that is painted on the wall.

[–]crystalpistol -1 points0 points ago

I didn't know Lenny Kravitz has been around since the 70s
