It's incorrectly attributed to Marcus Arelius.

Powerful quote, I'm curious who said it originally now?

[–]bigmad50 5 points6 points ago

May just be a complete fabrication. Here's the quote it may have been molded from:

"Now departure from the world of men is nothing to fear, if gods exist: because they would not involve you in any harm. If they do not exist, or if they have no care for humankind, then what is life to me in a world devoid of gods, or devoid of providence? But they do exist, and they do care for humankind: and they have put it absolutely in man's power to avoid falling into the true kinds of harm." —Marcus Aurelius

Complete fabrication by who? The words didn't assemble themselves...

Cheeky bastard.

Nobody knows: it popped up on the internet a couple of years ago. http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Marcus_Aurelius#Misattributed

I love when someone uses Pascal's wager. (For those few who don't know: you should believe in god because the consequences are pretty bad and there's no downside to believing.) First: that's not evidence of god only a reason to believe. Second: if you believe Pascal's wager, you should worship whatever god has the most benefits and worst downsides... and that wouldn't be the Christian God. Zeus'll send you to hell, but he'll also rape your wife.

I believe Pascal's wager was not to believe in God, but that you may as well worship God just in case he exists.

[–]ghastlyactions 0 points1 point ago

Exactly my point. It is used as an argument that god exists, but it isn't one. It's also used as a reason to worship the Christian god, and it isn't one. It's a fairly good argument as to why you should worship the Greek gods I suppose....

I've always found that kind of funny. Say you are God (omniscient and all) and there is this guy who says he believes in you just to be on the safe side. Do you fall for his little ploy? Or do you send him back to (more or less) square one and reincarnate him as an eukaryote. Or maybe you create a fake paradise for such people, so they can continue deluding themselves while believing they've deluded you... Oh that would be so much fun. I want to be a god too!
Of course, if your name is Zeus, then all you need to do is decide which one of the guy's daughters to seduce (you can do that while you "take care" of his wife)...

Still a misattributed or paraphrased quote.

But I like the sentiment! It is a sort of anti-Pascal wager!

Really? This again? Guys, I don't know if you're familiar with modern monotheism, but on the slight chance we're wrong, we're fucked. The rules of Christianity, Islam, et cetera, clearly state we're fucked. They dress up the language a little, but that's the gist.

This is a dumb quote; even as an atheist I don't get it.
