I tried to think of something (I should have come to reddit to ask for advice but this was in my pre-reddit days) but I just couldn't. At the end of the day, however, karma took over. I graduated law school and became a successful attorney. I married a wonderful man and we have two beautiful dogs. We are currently living out our dream of living in Spain, which i've always wanted to do. I am very happy and never think about her.

Last I heard, she is still renting a room in our friend's house and working at the front desk of a hotel. She has a drinking problem (it runs in her family) and she ran into one of our friends once and proudly told a story of how she went out with a bunch of her friends and got blackout drunk. She was woken up at the bar at 2 a.m. by the bartender who was closing up. All her "friends" had left her there and she had passed out with her face in a pizza. So in the game of life, I think i'm winning :)

There were so many other horrible parts to this story as well - she came from a very Catholic family who loved us (me and the other roommate). She didn't tell her parents about the fire but we found out her mom had co-signed the lease, so our attorney contacted the mom (we couldn't since technically she was a party to the lawsuit) and sent her a copy of the fire report that put her daughter at fault and all the other relevant paperwork. I thought that since she was so catholic and always preached doing the right thing (not to mention her daughter LITERALLY had the money in the bank and I KNOW that for a fact), that she would get her shit together and take care of the situation. Instead, she responded by lawyering up and forcing us to pay more attorneys fees and then pay part of a settlement (we could have gone through litigation and pinned it all on her but in the long run it would have cost us about 4x as much as settling in attorney's fees and she would have just declared bankruptcy anyway - fucking bitch). I was just finished law school and the other roommate was finishing up her master's and was planning on becoming an elementary school teacher.

The absolute WORST thing she did, though, was to the other roommate and not to me. She had this terrible boyfriend who was 19 years old (we were in our mid-20's) - total mooch and a piece of shit - let's call him Tom. Anyway, when I got my bar results (this was before the fire and stuff), the girl was out of town so me and the other (non-fire-setting) roommate (let's call her Jenny), my boyfriend, and Tom went out to celebrate. The next morning, I was talking to Jenny and she said that she didn't remember anything after the first drink and had some horribly graphic nightmares about having sexual contact with Tom. We are pretty sure he slipped something into her drink and we got him to admit that he had done things with her while she was semi-conscious (we still don't know if they had sex or not). Jenny told him he had to tell our other roommate or she would. So he told her. And the other roommate BLAMED Jenny for what happened and continued to date Tom. We told her that he wasn't allowed to come into the apartment. It was so insanely fucked up.
