No safety glasses? That's a damn shame....

carole?

[–]celticmagnum 5 points6 points ago

it's just not safe!

Came here to say this. He knows he's going to get an unpredictable pillar of steaming goo and he doesn't wear eye protection?

[–]lekotar 0 points1 point ago

I don't get why people wouldn't wear those. They look so goddamn nice.. some people wear them to raves and such. Cost a fraction too.

[–]Kerwin15 0 points1 point ago

Certainly cost less than new eyes.

Those ones are really expensive. The ones we had in my HS chem class were these things.

Random question: Does this smell like bananas? My teacher back in... jeeze, third grade? Did a demonstration of something like that, and I distinctly remember it smelled like bananas.

[–]aryst0krat 5 points6 points ago

Total ass-pull here, but bananas have a lot of potassium, so I'm thinking it could be?

[–]aliform 14 points15 points ago

Highly unlikely. What makes bananas have their smell and taste comes from something called an ester, which results from a reaction between an alcohol and a carboxylic acid. Not sure why this would smell like bananas, there are no esters present.

For an example of a basic ester, search ethyl acetate (ethyl ethate); ethtyl ethate smells like nail polish remover. It is formed from common compounds - ethanol (drinking alcohol) and acetic acid (ethanoic acid) :)

Damn whippersnappers, always showing me up. :P

It is your cake day. We will let you keep your dignity.

[–]aryst0krat 3 points4 points ago

Holy shit, it is! I thought I joined in the fall :o

For some reason I thought that isoamyl acetate just smelt like banana and that the natural smell was from something else. But no, I looked it up and it is indeed naturally produced by bananas (and bees as a signal for other bees to sting you).

Upvote for chemist's reaction.

Upvote for Draco Malfoy doing the reaction.

KI + 2H2O2 > KI + 2H2O + O2

My high school chemistry teacher told me a prank you can do with this: Hydrogen peroxide in the toilet bowl, potassium iodide in the tank (or vice versa, whichever is less noticeable). When someone flushes, hilarity ensues.

[–]Pants_R_Overatd 14 points15 points ago

Hmmm I wonder what'll happen...

Here goes noth-

Woah

Holy shit that was awesome

[–]EmergencyExit85 3 points4 points ago

Looks like he needs the peroxide for his hair.

[–]TheTaoOfBill 3 points4 points ago

How come we never did anything this awesome in my college chemistry class? It was all experiments with boiling water and some non toxic chemical.

And the one time we did work with something that was dangerous it was flammable. And we were encouraged NOT to do anything to set it on fire! WTF?

Hehehehe It looks like jizz.
