Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

I hate to be the one to do this, but that photo has NOTHING to do with the story (aside from a diver and a humpback whale).

The actual caption for the photograph is: Southern humpback whale, Megaptera novaeangliae, and diver, shaking hands, on migratory route, South Pacific Ocean. The photo was taken by wildlife photographer Masa Ushioda and submitted to a Stock Photography site called "Specialist Stock." >> LINK

Edit: The guy high-fiving the whale is another wildlife photographer named Marco Queral (who's credited in other articles as having taken the photo).

Upvoted for fact...

Sorry for having misled people - I was duped, or more precisely, I didn't dig as far as I could've/should've, and that's my fault. Context/more info: http://www.reddit.com/r/pics/comments/u2obf/beautifulamazing_he_helped_save_her_and_in_return/c4rv2bd

No way, you didn't mislead people. I'm sorry if I came across as a jerk ... most memes run the gauntlet as a game of telephone.

I just wanted to separate the photo(s) from the story, which certainly stands on it's own (the video is amazing.)

BULL. SHIT.

If you would've taken the time to check the comments of the article source you would've seen it was fake.

I've seen this picture around the internet a lot. It is even cooler to know the story behind it!

I haven't, but on searching KD, this comes up as having been on Reddit... a lot.

Still, none of them seem to find out how/why it occurred, and when I read the reason (there are sites that talk about wonderful photography, about whale behaviour, but no idea what was going on in this case), I thought I'd give this a chance at the risk of repost-downvoting.

Question: why did you remove the caption at the bottom of the photo from the article that reads "SpecialistStock / Barcroft Media"? Said caption would indicate to someone reading the article that that photo was a stock photo of a humpback whale and not the specific whale who was rescued. And if you click through to the SFC article that GlobalAnimal referenced, you can tell that that particular humpback whale stayed near the surface during its entire ordeal.

[–]dragonworthy[S] -1 points0 points ago

Wow, this really didn't turn out the way I thought it did. Some thoughts:

I didn't remove the caption, it's not how I work. I find an interesting image, then check KD (which in this case, admittedly, I saw but, as explained, chose to go ahead to put up), then look for larger images off Google as well as find a source if I can.

By this, I'll always find an image first (usually the best image for Reddit to see, which if a source is present is usually it), and thinking of doing something a bit different, thought to go look for at least a story source that uses the photo, if not the photo source. Through this method, I had the image, found what I thought was an inspiring article, was touched by it, checked to see that the SF article existed (basically skimmed for it actually happening).

Obviously I didn't get it right, and I'm disappointed by that. Guess I was wanting it to be that way, seeing how touching it was, and that the article (which came up 1st/2nd from the search) was linking to a legit article itself. Was duped, sorry to have caused the disappointment :(
