I was in Chaoyang, Beijing, CN. They had this ad campaign going around about "Civilized Chaoyang". Bunch of friends of mine walked past one that's not on the google images page- with a roller-coaster filled with multi-cultural children.

The problem? The African kid was in blackface. Straight up looney-tunes style. Everyone kind of stopped and someone piped up and said "civilized, eh?"

Edit: It's important to note that Chaoyang and Sanlitun (the expatriates' bar crawl district) are basically in the same general area- at least to get to Sanlitun from anywhere reasonable in the city, you get off at the same subway stop. It's where you'd find foreign restaurants, the silk market, and bars that serve western alcohol- so it kind of had a serious amount of foreigner foot-traffic.
