Hydrogen Peroxide, soap, and Potassium Iodide will do this. The KI acts as a catalyst for the decomposition of H202, which releases H2 and O2. The soap captures the gasses and expands.

You may be able to light it on fire...

EDIT: Source: I used to be a lab aid; Did this all the time (not the fire part)

[–]Wrym 289 points290 points ago

You may be able to light it on fire...

The thought process for many budding scientists.

[–]Seemanator 47 points48 points ago

Exactly why I'm going to school for chemistry...

[–]phoenyxrysing 68 points69 points ago

Unless you enjoy long hours in the lab waiting for a reaction to "stir for three hours", absurd amounts of calculus (p-chem...shudder), and nothing but 9am and 10am classes...turn back now.

That is all.

[–]OneDeltaTwo 20 points21 points ago

Lost 3 years of my life to a Chem course. My inner pyromaniac is still unfulfilled.

If it was all set things on fire you'd see a lot more people signing up. Even when you get to set stuff on fire the amount you're burning is usually pitiful, and behind saftey glass.

[–]Pepsisformosa 9 points10 points ago

Really? We had lots of fires in my chem classes. Of course, that was because the instructor didn't care about lab safety... The day we worked with ether was fun, too.

[–]thedow 49 points50 points ago

I don't remember that day.

[–]shwaiples 23 points24 points ago

I don't remember it ether.

[–]FlipConstantine 4 points5 points ago

Trust me, you've never seen anything more depraved.

[–]jbh1357 7 points8 points ago

Bats....everywhere

[–]TranClan67 2 points3 points ago

Agreed. The most excitement I got from my class was almost causing my centrifuge to flip(I forgot to balance the tubes)

[–]OneDeltaTwo 4 points5 points ago

My best day:

Had some reflux reaction bubbling away for 2 hours, now it's time to add the ice cold ethanol and finish the reaction. To this day I don't know why my spherical flask shattered from the temperature change whilst everyone else's stayed in one piece.

That was the day I found how fast my lab techs could run. Reaction mixture + ethanol -->(with roaring bunsen burner)--> desk on fire.

[–]TranClan67 1 point2 points ago

lol similar to one of mine

Mixing some copper solutions to form crystals but I added too much water. Lab TA tells me to boil away the excess water(everything was still fluid mind you). So I did but then when I stopped the heat it, for some reason, erupted everywhere :/

Had to restart that lab man.

[–]SirElderberry 17 points18 points ago

chemistry major

absurd amounts of calculus

Physics major here, making obligatory "ha" comment. (...I'm not a douchebag, I promise.)

[–]TgardnerH 3 points4 points ago

I'm an economics Grad student, Physics nerd, with Chem background. Everybody but the physicists complains about the math, but by far Physics Math > Chem math > Economics math. Not coincidentally, that's the order of our level of understanding, too.

[–]D49A1D852468799CAC08 4 points5 points ago

Where does "Math Math" fit in?

[–]JordanLeDoux 14 points15 points ago

[–]dole_pineapple_juice 1 point2 points ago

Physics is to math as sex is to masturbation.

[–]Odrakyr 6 points7 points ago

As in you do a lot of math during your undergrad?

[–]therunnykind 1 point2 points ago

I had a number of math and engineering major friends in college, and the math majors were quick to admit that the physical and liquid engineering students did more advanced math than they did.

[–]fireinthesky7 2 points3 points ago

Don't even get me started on the Analytical Chem class I had to take for my bio major. I graduated two years ago and I'm still traumatized.

[–]Maxxters 55 points56 points ago

I did it as a science teacher (for some reason it was called "elephant's toothpaste") with my students. But it never ever went that fast. I'm going to assume the H202 here was a lot stronger than the one I had access to. Boo for watered down peroxide.

[–]Xalba 12 points13 points ago

If you use soap dissolved in near boiling water, it will greatly improve the reaction speed and thereby giving you a result much like this one!

For added flair use some Potassium Permanganese i would think it is called in english (KMNO4). Nice color, but it is somewhat carcinogenic so use gloves unlike this guy

[–]Maxxters 6 points7 points ago

Ooh! Didn't think of that (heating up the soap). We always saved the potassium permanganate for other cool experiments.

[–]fistman 1 point2 points ago

I knew it as "elephant's trunk"

[–]notalivemau5 12 points13 points ago

my AP Chemistry teacher called it "Elephant toothpaste"

[–]Rushaw 5 points6 points ago

chem teacher called it the "von krap" experiment. We all thought it was legit, until the ta-daa moment. It came out a lot browner (hence the name i guess)

[–]the_hell_is_that 3 points4 points ago

That happens if you use manganese dioxide as a catalyst instead of potassium iodate.

[–]spicytortuga 6 points7 points ago

my chemistry called it a big ass root beer float!

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

i called it elephant semen.

[–]omegawoot 7 points8 points ago

Any specific kind of soap? and where would I get KI (in a shop, preferably) Also is ratio important?

[–]Mahaa134 1 point2 points ago

You can get KI pills at most pharmacies i believe. They're used to protect people from radiation. During the fukushima mishap a bunch of people in California bought a ton of them because they were scared of radiation I believe.

Normal dawn dish soap works fine. The more bubbles the soap makes the better it will work.

The ratio of KI to H2O2 is not all that important. It acts as a catalyst, and isn't actually used up in the reaction. A gram (maybe even less? I don't quite remember) should do it.

Also, note the concentration of H2O2 that you use. Higher concentration will create more foam. Start small first to get an idea of what to expect, this stuff is fun but it can do some serious damage.

For Big Bang Fans: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lDYiATTyrjw

[–]thoriginal 17 points18 points ago

Little Johnny was a chemist,

But now he chems no more;

For what he thought was H2O

Was H2SO4.

[–]Imperion_GoG 41 points42 points ago

[–]AzureBlu 2 points3 points ago

I know some of these words..

[–]ConstipatedNinja 1 point2 points ago

H2SO4 is sulfuric acid, in case you're wondering.

[–]AzureBlu 4 points5 points ago

Oh.. TIL.

[–]myopinionstinks 2 points3 points ago

So can I pick up KI from the store so I can do science?

[–]the_hell_is_that 2 points3 points ago

See if you can get your hands on some Iodine tablets. They were all the rage after the Fukushima disaster, so they should be easy to get by now.

[–]paullyjunge 2 points3 points ago

Do you have proportions and is the KI easy for a layman to get?

[–]poon-is-food 3 points4 points ago

Not gonna be flamable, proportions dont matter, the reaction is soley based on the h2o2, the KI just speeds its up

KI is present in "table salt with iodine" but i am not sure how much, i believe little as the body needs very little iodine. a measure of this is nuclear disaster pills that contain 130mg KI, this is over 300-700 times the reccomended daily intake.

available here http://www.alibaba.com/product-gs/558230697/potassium_iodide.html

although it has limited uses in home tinkerish chemistry.

[–]redmongrel 1 point2 points ago

So what would be the off-the-shelf home recipe for this to do with the kids?

[–]thedvorakian 1 point2 points ago

Is KI really needed? Can't remember it as an ingredient in the experiment. running food coloring down the side of the cylinder can give the toothpaste a "stripped" appearance. Though KI was part of the "purple haze" experiment often shown in tandem with this one at our school's demonstrations. KI+ammoniumhydroxide makes a safe, shock sensitive implosive crystal that you can set off with a feather.

[–]poon-is-food 2 points3 points ago

its a catalyst - it speeds up the reaction (in this case decomposition)

there are many catalysts, one enzyme that will catalyse this reaction is found in potatoes.

this reaction has many catalysts, but of vary degrees of "speed of reaction go"

[–]af01822 1 point2 points ago

In regards to fire, yes you can, and I totally have.

[–]capcalhoon 7 points8 points ago

GODDAMMIT i love nerdy shit.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

see I try these things... then it never happens as I see them on the internet or whatever. It always ends up being such a big mess.

[–]chemistry_teacher 0 points1 point ago

This is right. I thought about the exact same reaction, and the colors (though pixellated and a bit hard to discern) appear to corroborate this. There are a bit of yellow and some browns, which (IIRC) are exceedingly similar to the colors I've seen when doing this.

[–]Sleeping_Ugly_ 604 points605 points ago

Goggles motherfucker. sigh

[–]schwuppdiwupp 95 points96 points ago

He's gonna end up like Carol.

[–]thatdudeyouknow 37 points38 points ago

For those who went to a school without a good chemistry teacher. Here it is

[–]thebornotaku 4 points5 points ago

Did you know semen comes out at over 20mph? Carol didn't, but she does now.

[–]Fendicano 46 points47 points ago

"carol didnt like wearing goggles.. now she doesnt have to."

[–]PFCDoofles 11 points12 points ago

CAROL NOOOO!

[–]corvett 12 points13 points ago

Carol didn't wear goggles. Now she can't see why kids love cinnamon toast crunch.

[–]InfantSpore 2 points3 points ago

Is it because they have tan lines?

[–]corvett 1 point2 points ago

Cinnamon Toast Crunch - It's the taste you can see!

(It was their slogan. Nevermind. I guess only 12ish people got the reference.)

[–]InfantSpore 1 point2 points ago

I was actually referencing the commercial where they ask the lifeguard if he knows why kids love Cinnamon Toast Crunch, and they say exactly that :P

[–]corvett 1 point2 points ago

Ah, it is me that does not get the reference. The tables are turned. I commend you.

[–]mrgreen4242 459 points460 points ago

My first reaction to your comment was "wtf am I supposed to be Googling?".

[–]Athene_Wins 106 points107 points ago

Just play with the piano, bro. You're a Skrillex now

[–]A_Blind_Pilot 174 points175 points ago

You're a Skrillex, Harry.

[–]Tashre 20 points21 points ago

I'm a w-w-w-w-w-w-w-w-w-wat?

[–]sageDieu 18 points19 points ago

That may be the worst possible insult I've ever seen on the internet... you sick fuck

[–]ZombieKingKong 13 points14 points ago

And yet, no mention of Nickelback

[–]boomfarmer 1 point2 points ago

Draco Malfoy is such a Nickelback.

[–]jakfischer 17 points18 points ago

[–]knightjohannes 7 points8 points ago

It was obvious. "Motherfucker" - google that, damn it. ;)

[–]stealthfiction 7 points8 points ago

just googled "that, damn it. ;-)"

Not much help.

[–]Sanitary_Lumpkin 18 points19 points ago

Because you put a nose on the emote.

[–]PFCDoofles 5 points6 points ago

Please. the Googles know how to fix that. THEY ALWAYS KNOW.

[–]vocalon 1 point2 points ago

Always.

[–]cyNickalCyn 1 point2 points ago

The Googles, they did nothing!

[–]penis-butter 3 points4 points ago

Motha. Fucka. Jones.

[–][deleted] 50 points51 points ago

As a chem instructor, this was my first thought.

[–]morzinbo 37 points38 points ago

the goggles do nothing!

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points ago

up and at them!

[–]centurijon 23 points24 points ago

"No, 'Up and atom!'"

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points ago

wow, I guess I never knew that's how he was trying to correct him.

[–]PhoenixKnight 3 points4 points ago

"Up and let's go."

[–]jonathanrdt 1 point2 points ago

UP AND AT THEM!

[–]collapsible_chopstix 2 points3 points ago

[–]Indestructavincible 7 points8 points ago

Its OK he was wearing contacts.

[–]Naborino 3 points4 points ago

I bet he's wearing sandals too.

[–]Kgquari 11 points12 points ago

The goggles... They do nothing!

[–]yigit3 5 points6 points ago

Anyone else read this as "Googles motherfucker" and imagine someone doing an Internet search?

[–]lebiro 57 points58 points ago

That sure is a useful tub the tube is standing in. Bet it would have made a hell of a mess if that hadn't been there.

[–]ViralMage 4 points5 points ago

Absolutely none of it got in the tub. None. Haha!

[–]darkwaterpirate 2 points3 points ago

[–]ThislsWholAm 41 points42 points ago

[–]TbanksIV 6 points7 points ago

[–]cman95and 28 points29 points ago

Elephant toothpaste!!!!!! We beg our chem teacher to let us watch YouTube videos of this, as he won't let us do it for real:(

[–]elastic-craptastic 10 points11 points ago

Why do you need to beg your chem teacher to watch a youtube video? Can't you just watch it at home?

[–]nocubir 2 points3 points ago

How is it made? What are the two elements?

[–]cmpbck 295 points296 points ago

10 points to Slytherin

[–]Tface 14 points15 points ago

I'm convinced this is how Pillsbury biscuits are made.

[–]balloubird 13 points14 points ago

Can we have a round of applause for the useless rectangular container that didn't catch ANY of that shit?

[–]xXRequiemXx 18 points19 points ago

Stand back! There's science in this shit!

[–]DaveDowner 7 points8 points ago

They are trying to create the world's largest snake firework, which will inevitably kill Kenny.

[–]HeyItsCiaran 47 points48 points ago

Why is Draco Malfoy playing with a chemistry set?

[–]macogle 28 points29 points ago

And where the hell are his goggles?

[–]omfghi2u 9 points10 points ago

He doesn't know Carol apparently.

[–]Isnt 3 points4 points ago

Now... she doesn't need them.

[–]overtoastedpoptart 6 points7 points ago

He wasnt good enough with magic. So, he resorted to chem!

[–]obvnotlupus 7 points8 points ago

Apparently he was convinced by r/atheism to stop believing in fairies stuff and get some real education.

[–]wookymonster 2 points3 points ago

Alchemy!

[–]omegawoot 1 point2 points ago

Its for potions class!

[–]DeathByFarts 5 points6 points ago

This isnt science .. This is a dude playing with something ..

If it was science , he would have goggles !!!

[–]Azrael_Ferrum 3 points4 points ago

And a lab coat.

[–]zelars 4 points5 points ago

What would happen if you ate* capsules of the two ingredients in this? Would they explode?

*I wrote gave instead of ate. For some reason I also meant to ask if the presence of other things in your stomache would/could interrupt this chemical reaction.

[–]DocTomoe 7 points8 points ago

You would probably die or become heavily injured by the Hydrogen Peroxide.

[–]whiskey06 6 points7 points ago

Just a flesh wound.

[–]Schroedingers_Cat 1 point2 points ago

Will buff right out.

[–]FrostByt 5 points6 points ago

I used to do this all the time at school. One time it landed on my arm when I wasn't paying Attention. The Reaction Is Exothermic and I still have the mark left from the Burn. That shit is Hot man. HOOOOOT

[–]evan_ktbd 1 point2 points ago

Snooch to the the motherfuckin' nooch!

Elephant Toothpaste<3

[–]EricTboneJackson 1 point2 points ago

What the guy in the video did: poured two liquids into a larger vessel.
What chemicals did: reacted in a spectacular fashion.
What science did: uncovered the rules governing such reactions.

[–]auron818 1 point2 points ago

This looks like the stuff used for spray foam insulation.

[–]Bone-stone 1 point2 points ago

I think science just creamed itself...

Reminds me of the Big Bang Theory (screw all you haters, I enjoy it) when Sheldon, who is pranked with helium during a radio talk show, gets revenge by making a similar chemical reaction. Wonder if this is the same thing? It was basically the same color and look, though on the show it happened much slower.

Dish Soap, Potassium Iodide, and 30% Hydrogen Peroxide (Reaction Initiator)

My University does this reaction every year for our chemistry community outreach program. A very fun experiment to be honest.
