Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

I think this is from Thailand Tiger Temple. The tigers there are unfortunately quite mistreated. source

[–]pepperman7 15 points16 points ago

This is such a slanted report. I've been there myself several times. I can tell you the head monk (or abbott as they refer to him) cares deeply about these creatures and treats them as if they were his own children. You can see him here rolling his head in the cats stomachs . While they do allow foreigners to pose with the cats for about $70US and have their pictures taken the money goes to supporting the cats and the temple itself and there are very strict rules for how you can interact with the tigers. It is Buddhist monks who are running the whole place not some 2 bit entrepreneur just looking to make a buck.

[–]trassel 4 points5 points ago

lillyjb's link contains a 23-24 page long report with loads of information, pictures and sources, backing up his/hers statement. You say it's a slanted report and provide a picture of a monk and a tiger as if it somehow proves something. I don't get it?

Don't get me wrong, I'm really interested in if what you're saying is true. Would you mind pointing out exactly how/why it's slanted?

[–]Nendai -1 points0 points ago

While I don't really care either way about the tiger temple, it's not like I would be doing anything about it. I'm going to affirm that the report is weak at best:

-The report claims "CWI Investigators..." did this, found that, blah blah blah. Without any substantial evidence, these claims are pointless.

-The references are terrible. They do not provide any base to the claims, they are only there for information about tigers and pictures.

-Bias. The bias is overwhelming, and there is nothing non-neutral from the short pieces I read.

That said, I don't doubt there's probably something wrong going on there. But that report is a piece of shit from an objective point of view.

[–]kitolz 1 point2 points ago

A cursory glance at the document reveals that they have plenty of sources, and it looks to be an in-depth report.

More to the point, what possible profit would it be for CWI to post a bogus report about this establishment in particular? It's not going to increase their funding, if anything it's a drain on their budget to lobby for shutting down the tiger park.

[–]Nendai 1 point2 points ago

I don't normally intend to be an ass, but I will be a bit this time.

"A cursory glance at the document reveals that they have plenty of sources, and it looks to be an in-depth report". Wow, just wow, you sound like a college student browsing a Wikipedia article. It has lots of sources, must be legit.

13 of these sources come from non-academic websites. The other sources seem to be a mix of facts about tigers and sources for pictures.

There were 3 main points to the paper:

-Illegal trafficking: This paper proved absolutely nothing, though they stated a fuck ton.

-Animal abuse: Well no shit, they're fucking tigers, how else would you keep them from going wild.

-Tourist safety: Also no shit, they're still tigers.

If you bother to read this far, I'm not calling you stupid, I'm just being mean to hammer in the point. This is not a respectable article. It is full of bias and does no good for any legal proceeding. I do agree that the Tiger Park is bad, but like I said in my first post, there is absolutely nothing I can do about it. We're talking about Thailand here; a country that had a god damn military coup only five years ago.

To answer your last point. This article does a ton for their cause. These are charity organizations. Those "CWI Investigators" were probably not paid to go investigate. They are most likely just members of the group giving out their time and vacation because they agree with the organization. More supporters + more donations > more articles > more supporters + more donations. To finalize: what if PETA had their name on this article instead of CWI? Would you have viewed it the same way?

Either way, have an upvote, you let me rant a bit.

[–]kitolz 2 points3 points ago

I tried looking up CWI initially to check their figures and other projects, but they don't even have a gooddamn wikipedia page. So I gave up before I typed out that response.

I apologize. Shamefur dispray.

[–]robwinnfield 0 points1 point ago

Agreed. One personal anecdote doesn't refute such a (seemingly) well developed, professional investigation.

Ha!

HDR

[–]steffon 4 points5 points ago

it is not HDR, it just amateur who used camera on "full auto" and camera undeexposed, because of bright background and he has to artifically boost brightness in dark areas...

anyway photo should be in trash bin, not on reddit

[–]TheGreatSzalam 2 points3 points ago

Really bad, fake, HDR, but yes.

[–]torleifk 2 points3 points ago

Except it's not HDR. It's exaggerated use of clarity and/or high pass filter.

[–]TheGreatSzalam 2 points3 points ago

Thus my description of it as fake. Why someone would want to intentionally make their pic look horrible is beyond me.

[–]designty 0 points1 point ago

It really just ruins the picture in my opinion, not sure why people like it

[–]epikax -1 points0 points ago

It's getting ridiculous. Half the photos on /r/pics are HDR these days. I thought everyone hated them by now.

[–]saultymoosepickles 0 points1 point ago

Whats the bet HDR outlasts instagram/hipstermatic faux vintage-split toning-film grain-vignette

[–]epikax 0 points1 point ago

Oh well, the trend will always be behind the curve.

[–]zarro 8 points9 points ago

Bullshit, they treat the tigers like crap. It's just show for the tourists

[–]AmericanDerp -2 points-1 points ago

Why is he still alive then?

[–]zarro 9 points10 points ago

Tigers are not pets nor were they ever meant to be. Any wild thing can have moments of peace that humans take advantage of but it does not mean we should. It could also be that the tiger is drugged.

Until he gets eaten.

[–]AnxAlbumxCover 1 point2 points ago

What's going on with the monk's ear? Part of it looks like a serrated edge.

[–]rolfv 3 points4 points ago

Impressive tattoos

[–]Matterplay 0 points1 point ago

Why does this monk have tattoos?

[–]scumbubble 0 points1 point ago

No one is born a monk.

[–]kyebosh 3 points4 points ago

Level 14 Human Monk.

[–]Zachattck93 0 points1 point ago

He looks like a fricken shape-shifter. haha

[–]Metallic007 0 points1 point ago

What is that on the top of his cane ?

[–]ophello 0 points1 point ago

Great...another good photo ruined by shitty HDR.

[–]Qieth 0 points1 point ago

Those are some really badass tattoos, though!

[–]fastestguninthewest -1 points0 points ago

In my dreams, I am this man. This picture for me is exactly what it means to be happy.

[–]GavinZac 0 points1 point ago

Drugged into a stupor, or very rich?

[–]fastestguninthewest 0 points1 point ago

Money wouldn't matter. I'd eat when I'm hungry, sleep when I'm tired, without over indulging. A simple life with simple joys, and I'd get to pet a giant cat. I've always wanted a pet tiger.

[–]GavinZac 0 points1 point ago

So... go do it? It's not very hard, and if you're white they'd be willing to put up with your mistakes in exchange for you standing around and... being white.

[–]fastestguninthewest -1 points0 points ago

I think part of it is the reality would never be as good as the dream. For the most part, I seem to have carved out a niche here with friends and family.
