For some reason, turtles eating is so much cuter than if they're just sitting there.

As a tortoise owner, I can confirm that the best part of owning a tortoise is watching it eat.

[–]KoreanTerran 41 points42 points ago

I would do very questionable things to be near that much mashed potato.

[–]ausernamenottaken 7 points8 points ago

Same here... I scare myself sometimes.

[–]fuckyoubarry 4 points5 points ago

Well sheeeit. If it's gonna be that kinda party...

[–]naive_springwater[S] 0 points1 point ago

If you love mashed potato, have you tried croquettes? Mashed potato mixed with beschamel sauce, rolled into logs, then crumbed and baked...

[–]IReallyLikeSushi 26 points27 points ago

What a lucky turtle! I can't even imagine how excited I would be if I had the opportunity to eat a pile of mashed potatoes bigger than me.

[–]chicagogam 3 points4 points ago

it'd be even better with gravy :)

[–]court12b 5 points6 points ago

I imagine him just eating his way into the middle of the mashed potatoes. And then living in his potato house, perhaps.

[–]Boromarl -3 points-2 points ago

Could you imagine it with sushi?

[–]court12b 1 point2 points ago

My turtle was a dick. I do miss him though.

[–]Popsumpot 8 points9 points ago

That's a tortoise right? Not a turtle?

[–]TheZor 1 point2 points ago

Correct. Americans like to call both animals "turtles" since they're the same family, but they're very different.

[–]sugarfixkid 11 points12 points ago

One has stompies and the other has flippies.

[–]TheMadHatter_9 1 point2 points ago

This made me giggle like a tiny child. Thanks.

[–]agasizzi 0 points1 point ago

Lol, adorable, but don't forget, most aquatic turtles have Claws, not flippies (mostly only marine turtles have flippers, only a few freshwater turtles have them)

[–]sugarfixkid 4 points5 points ago

This is my turtle Sheldon (freshwater - australian eastern longneck), he has claw flippies :)

[–]docblue 0 points1 point ago

he looks entirely pleased with himself.

[–]agasizzi 0 points1 point ago

I love those guys cause they always look like they're smiling at you. The only true flipper turtle i'm aware of in freshwater is the fly-river turtle. Pretty much one of my all time favorites

[–]langleyi 0 points1 point ago

Not really, turtles is the family, containing sea turtles and tortoises. Calling a tortoise a turtle is just as correct as calling a chimp an ape.

[–]TheZor 0 points1 point ago

Yes, I know. I meant more that he was correct in that it IS a tortoise, not that it's NOT a turtle.

[–]naive_springwater[S] 0 points1 point ago

It appears so. I did not know the differences, but this thread is teaching me!

Very cute.

But young turtles are mainly carnivorous and potatos are among the least nutritious foods you can give them. Please take care of that little bundle of love.

Also, very, very cute. Awwww...

[–]sugarfixkid 1 point2 points ago

This photo is about 10 years old now... probably not their turtle. However, I do agree with looking after turtles. Mine gets mostly prawns (Though sometimes he catches the fish in his tank and eats them. This usually makes my sister upset.)

[–]naive_springwater[S] 0 points1 point ago

Nope, not mine, found the picture accidently and submitted it.

[–]BlueEyedLover 0 points1 point ago

This tortoise is actually a herbivore. No meats allowed!

[–]RockBlock 0 points1 point ago

It is also a tortoise not a terrapin turtle. I'm pretty sure many tortoises are mostly herbivorous even while young... Though I suppose I'll still google it.

[–]eth0izzle 1 point2 points ago

It baffles me how many people get turtle and tortoise mixed up. This is a tortoise and this is a turtle - can you see the difference? Also, mashed potatoes are bad for tortoises.

[–]TheZor 3 points4 points ago

To be fair, it's not always a case of mixing them up, Americans like to call both animals "turtles" using the argument that they're the same family. Technically true, but still.

[–]naive_springwater[S] 0 points1 point ago

Thank you for your defense (throughout the thread). Unfortunately for me, I'm Australian, so in this case I did ignorantly confuse the two!

[–]Elanthius 0 points1 point ago

Yeah thats also why I refer to all dogs as wolves and felines of any kind as lions.

*Note: In reality I don't think anyone is right or wrong here, English words are used differently in different places.

[–]TheZor 0 points1 point ago

No, both sides are equally right, although (again, to be fair) correcting someone who calls a tortoise a turtle is a bit like correcting someone who calls a Ferrari a car. I always call a tortoise a tortoise because they are different to turtles, and I prefer to be that little bit more accurate.

[–]langleyi 0 points1 point ago

You are incorrect, calling a tortoise a turtle is just as correct as calling a chimp an ape.

[–]TheMadHatter_9 0 points1 point ago

Hmmm... more like the other way. Wolves are dogs and lions are cats. I know it's the same thing, but .... i dunno.

[–]langleyi -1 points0 points ago

You are incorrect, Turtles (or more correctly Testudines) is the order, of which all tortoises and sea turtles belong to. So, a tortoise is a turtle.

[–]DubiumGuy 0 points1 point ago

You guys should adopt the superior British naming system for shelled reptiles.

British English normally describes these reptiles as turtles if they live in the sea; terrapins if they live in fresh or brackish water; or tortoises if they live on land.

:D

[–]kjnow 0 points1 point ago

man loves eating baby turtles and mashed potato

[–]AdamAntony 0 points1 point ago

It's a tortoise I think

[–]langleyi 0 points1 point ago

Tortoises are turtles.

[–]AdamAntony 0 points1 point ago

Differences between turtles and tortoises include: Turtles primarily live in water (fresh water and oceans) and so have webbed front feet or flipper-like fins to make swimming easier. Tortoises live almost exclusively on land, so do not have flippers, but normal feet without webbing, often with sharp claws for digging. They only enter water to drink or wash themselves off, and can in fact drown in strong currents. They may be found in arid areas. Turtles tend to have flatter shells than tortoises, while tortoises have a more domed shell. Turtles can be omnivorous, eating both plants and insects; tortoises eat only plants and leaves and other vegetation, so they are herbivorous, especially preferring moisture-bearing vegtation. Turtles can migrate from one place to another, swimming mighty oceans; tortoises tend to stay in one area.

Tortoises ( /ˈtɔːr.təs.ɪz/, Testudinidae) are a family of land-dwelling reptiles in the order Testudines. Like their marine cousins, the sea turtles, tortoises are shielded from predators by a shell.

[–]langleyi 0 points1 point ago

No, a tortoise is a type of turtle. There are two types of turtle: tortoises and sea turtles.

[–]AdamAntony 0 points1 point ago

No, no it isn't.

[–]missv8nightmare 0 points1 point ago

That is a tortoise. The words are not interchangeable.

[–]langleyi 0 points1 point ago

You are incorrect, 'turtles' is the order, containing sea turtles and tortoises. Calling a tortoise a turtle is just as correct as calling a chimp an ape.

[–]missv8nightmare 0 points1 point ago

Well I think it's bullshit. A tortoise is much different than a turtle, I've owned both. Tortoises deserve to be known by their own name.

And yes I am well aware that this is an opinion, so please do not pull that out of your ass.

[–]Theboomkin 0 points1 point ago

[–]bigempty92 0 points1 point ago

Turtles live in water :) tortoises live on land. And turtles have flippers. That's a cute baby tortoise who loves eating mashed potatoes. Just thought the people of reddit should know the difference between a turtle and tortoise.

[–]langleyi 0 points1 point ago

You are incorrect, 'turtles' is the order, containing sea turtles and tortoises. Calling a tortoise a turtle is just as correct as calling a chimp an ape.

[–]bigempty92 0 points1 point ago

Yes, but if I were a tortoise I wouldn't want to be called a turtle all of the time. It takes away their individuality and it'd get really confusing if we referred to everything by it's order! Tortoises have feelings too :) If you were looking at a picture of a chimp, you wouldn't refer to it as an ape. And most people don't know the difference between turtles and tortoises. You have to be specific when you're trying to buy one, as I learned when my boyfriend and I went to get a tortoise together.

[–]Sadrockman 0 points1 point ago
