this was the first railroad. They realized the second one should be underground.

And then they also realized that it needed brakes.

Brakes weren't necessary until the 13th ammendment.

Why would you downvote this? I'm providing a source for more material.

Relax... A single downvote usually means it's just Reddit's balancing algorithm.

I've heard you can order slaves in cartons. It's pretty cheap but shipping and handling is brutal.

I believe it's a means to travel up and down the side of a hill, probably in a mine. The men in the photo are also likely paid workers, not slaves.

[–]IHateNicolasCage 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This is a picture of a mine lift I think in probably the late 19th century somewhere in the west, it is most likely California, Nevada, Utah, or Idaho. I think this might be one I have seen and I think it is from Utah, but I'm not sure. They are workers taking the lift I guess to or from the mine, some of the tunnels are above 10k feet up, a pain to walk to everyday so they would give you a lift from the camp to the mine.

It a picture of miners in South Africa at the diamond mine in Kimberly. repost, and stupid. It was one of the biggest open pit mines in the world at the time.

Actually, my ancestors owned many slaves and lived on a huge farm. When I asked my grandpa how my great great, and great grandpa treated slaves, my grandpa told me that the slaves were treated very well. Even when slaves were freed, they stuck around. He told me that it was very rare to see a slave abused. He mentioned that slaves were how they made their money. If you would treat them badly, they wouldn't work as good, they would be less healthy, therefore, making the land owner less money.

[–]TMM 0 points1 point ago

He told me that it was very rare to see a slave abused.

Just being enslaved is abuse.

[–]Carbon_Dirt 0 points1 point ago

Makes sense. Obviously slavery still = bad, but I think people have some misconceptions of how the majority of slaves were treated. Most people seem to think that a slave's daily life was "Wake up, eat slop with the pigs, go out to the field to have your back lashed for three hours, then bring in five thousand pounds of cotton, then eat more slop, then have the females raped by the male slave owners, then be whipped some more then go to bed."

They were basically seen as livestock; again, it was far less than dignified and was awful, but how often do you see a farmer whipping a horse to the brink of death just for the heck of it? It just doesn't make sense.

[–]voteddownward 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's exactly right. I was trying to be proper in my first comment, but my grandpas actual words were "They were our tractors. Every farmer takes care of his tractor."

That is what the threat of violence is for. If slavery wasn't so bad how come there were so many laws and institutions designed to keep individuals enslaved ? Do you think the South fought for the Fugitive Slave Law for shits and giggles ? Do you think my state built citadels and arsenals to put down slave revolts even though you believe there wasn't a threat ? Quite simply your logic is suffering from a mismatch with what happens in reality whenever one group can enact violence against another group without any form of recourse. And you forgot to end your post with "Ron Paul 2012".

Goddamn you libertarians are divorced from reality.

Because "not so bad" doesn't mean not bad, it just means not as bad as modern portrayals often make it out to be.

I don't feel like I am part of an attacked minority lol. I am not personally offended by this post either. I just think its interesting how people think slavery is something to be joked about but joking about an image of a retarded girl saying "I can count to sausage!" is unacceptable.

[–]Aqualung90 0 points1 point ago

Good point, I guess I misinterpreted your post. For what it's worth, I think it's all worth joking about as long as it's not maliciously directed at an individual.

[–]IHateNicolasCage 0 points1 point ago

well these people aren't actually slaves and we only became outraged after the story about the girl was on youtube, go make a video saying you are offended and get a lot of hits to make people pretend they didn't think this was funny

[–]IHateNicolasCage 1 point2 points ago

I think these were actually miners so they had food and housing, but work was not guaranteed as if metal prices shifted or you lost the vein you would be looking for another job.
