When you watch Asian dramas, they REALLY pull you in. Example: Thai life commercials. I don't understand it (yay subtitles!) and it's only about 2 mins long and yet I'm almost reduced to tears.

From my tiny puddle of experience, I recommend "Castaway on the Moon", it's even on Netflix streaming.

Meh, it's not that bad. Overall, it's a better language than English. Or almost any other language, for that matter. Honestly, there's almost to no discussion on how to pronounce certain characters. If you have to spell out a word, let's take cup. You'll start with the c -- you don't say c, you say 'see'. You don't say 'u', you say 'you', and you don't say 'p', you go 'pee'.

In Japanese it's just characters:

お は よ う

O. Ha. Yo. U. Ohayou. There won't be any mistake, because the language simply doesn't allow it. Sure, you're able to pronounce it wrong, but there's no discussion whether or not it's the correct pronouncation. There is but one, and that is by following each character carefully. (of course, they'll have the 'a' and 'i', which in some cases will be thrown together, to make an 'aye' sound.)

I sound retarded, and I'm definitely not an expert on Japanese, it's just the brilliance of it I admire so much.

edit: note that by not placing the characters together you're going to end up with all kind of words. Those four characters need to be put together, like おはよう, else you're going to confuse the hell out of people. :<

Sure, it's great... Until you get to Kanji. Then all logic is thrown out the window. Multiple characters with essentially the same meaning and the same reading, characters with the same reading and different (sometimes even opposite) meanings, characters that are only used in one or two words. It can be a nightmare to learn.

I find the use of katakana vs. hiragana/kanji confusing sometimes too. Something that had a Japanese word is now sometimes referred to with a borrowed word. How they keep up the literacy rate in Japan with three different writing systems, I have no idea. Also, grammar. Hate Japanese grammar, it can get extremely complicated and everything is different depending on who you're addressing, context, and your status/gender.

Contrast this with Chinese, which relies entirely on characters--but it's consistent! And very little grammar with no genders or tenses.

It wasn't a movie -- it was a 12 episode dorama (soap opera) and it is SAD! worse, it was based on a true story and in the ending credits -- just to make sure you cried -- they including images of the real girl when she was in the hospital.
