Sigh. You have almost 60,000 more comment karma than me SimilarImage, and I've been here for 45+ more months. What am I doing with my life...

I would say that is one third of the joke.

Heh Karl Pilkington pointed this out on the Ricky Gervais show

[–]enr 2 points3 points ago

haha yeah "like a pear" :D

[–]capoeirista13 2 points3 points ago

yeah and they laughed at him for it, which kind of annoyed me

[–]XCodes 2 points3 points ago

Dude, if you don't like listening to Karl Pilkington getting laughed at, you're totally listening to the wrong show...

It's not that Ricky Gervais isn't funny... but that is kind of a dick show he's got going.

[–]capoeirista13 1 point2 points ago

yeah that was actually the only episode I tried watching, and Ricky was just too big of a dick for me to continue watching. I didn't even finish the episode.

[–]Dr_Pockets 1 point2 points ago

I think they laugh at him for most things

[–]ronton 1 point2 points ago

I often find myself agreeing with Karl, but then he continues his thought and I usually go "what a fucking idiot".

[–]Achilles-Opinion -3 points-2 points ago

Haha - yeah, that's immediately what I thought as well :)

This is only possible with timetravel.

Edit: Sorry, i didn't open the imgur link.

[–]timmymac 2 points3 points ago

I read it that way first too. If you look closely, it says 43.

[–]xebix 1 point2 points ago

While uncommon, it is quite possible to get pregnant at 13.

[–]oldmoneey 1 point2 points ago

Which is irrelevant, as one would have to have gotten pregnant about eight years before they were born in order for this to happen.

I'm Chinese, and the weird thing is, from my childhood memories, all my great-grandparents and great-grandaunts seemed to be extremely short =P.

Seriously, this again?

[–]WillBlaze 13 points14 points ago

I like reposts, seeing as I haven't seen this before.

[–]AngryHippy 2 points3 points ago

FUUUCCKKK YOUUUU, Would you prefer we get rid of the upvote/downvote system? Just click hide and move on. Oh but that wouldn't get you any comment karma for bitching.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

I already downvoted. But you can't tell what the downvote is for. Some people might think I downvoted because maybe they think its racist, or because it's unoriginal. I'm bitching that this shit comes up ALL the freaking time.

[–]TatMan15 2 points3 points ago

Exactly what I thought. The bot is the best too

[–]Surfacetovolume 0 points1 point ago

I hate it when people point out every little repost, but this one really has just been done to death already.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

exactly. I see reposts all the time but this one...c'mon...

[–]flinxsl 0 points1 point ago

Even my girlfriend who doesn't go on the internet very much has seen this.

[–]shrlock 1 point2 points ago

They're timeless dude. Could be 16 or 60.

[–]ParkAndBeacon 1 point2 points ago

So Kim Jong Il was actually a 60-70 year old Asian female?

[–]Blindinglight 1 point2 points ago

The 120 year old one looks like Link's grandma in Wind Waker.

[–]Dirge37 11 points12 points ago

It's new to me And I like it. Good show old boy.

[–]Duckins 5 points6 points ago

Exactly. Thus why I hate it when people insist on bitching about reposts. Not everyone has seen everything.

[–]LSStaf 0 points1 point ago

First time I've seen it.

STEREOTYPES! Hooray!!!!!!

[–]I_WIN_DEAL_WITH_IT -1 points0 points ago

Stereotypes are usually there for a reason.

[–]NoSubrannke -2 points-1 points ago

There's a difference between stereotypes and generalizations.

[–]I_WIN_DEAL_WITH_IT 7 points8 points ago

Wow, you know what, you're right! There is a difference.

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/stereotype

  1. Sociology . a simplified and standardized conception or image invested with special meaning and held in common by members of a group: The cowboy and Indian are American stereotypes.

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/generalization

a proposition asserting something to be true either of all members of a certain class or of an indefinite part of that class.

So it looks like making generalizations is bad, and stereotypes is a useful thing to do to convey ideas.

Protip: don't make arguments using words you don't know the meanings of.

[–]NoSubrannke 0 points1 point ago

1) I didn't say generalizations were always good. 2) Generalizations in the context of sociology is different:

According to Caring for Patients from Different Cultures by Geri-Ann Galanti:

"A difference between a stereotype and a generalization lies not in the content, but in the usage of the information. An example is the assumption that Mexicans have large families. If I meet Rosa, a Mexican woman, and I say to myself, "Rosa is a Mexican; she must have a large family," I am stereotyping her. But if I think Mexicans often have large families and then ask Rosa how many people are in her family without assuming that she has a large family because she is Mexican, I am making a generalization."

In other words, a stereotype is a trait given to a group of people and assumed true for that entire people. A generalization is a common trait observed among a people, but not an assumption about every person in that group.

Pro-tip: read the definitions that you have provided and then logically think about what they mean. Your definition of both generalizations and stereotypes both support this view point. The one problem you have: stereotypes are not helpful to understanding a culture or group of people, but generalizations are. Stereotypes deny people in a culture who are outliers from that very stereotype.

[–]I_WIN_DEAL_WITH_IT 0 points1 point ago

Quoting someone that also doesn't know the definition of a word will just dig your hole deeper.

An example is the assumption that Mexicans have large families. If I meet Rosa, a Mexican woman, and I say to myself, "Rosa is a Mexican; she must have a large family,"

That's exactly what generalization means. Did you miss the definition or something?

But if I think Mexicans often have large families and then ask Rosa how many people are in her family without assuming that she has a large family because she is Mexican, I am making a generalization."

No, that makes no difference. The idea is the generalization. Asking about it doesn't change the fact that you're thinking about it. Where do you come up with this shit?

In other words, a stereotype is a trait given to a group of people and assumed true for that entire people.

Stop trying to switch the definitions of words around to make you not look like an idiot. It's having the opposite affect. A stereotype is a general set of characteristics that are often applied to groups of similar people for the purpose of making a coherent identity. Generalizing is assuming that because one person of that group is a certain way, the rest of the group must be identical. It's really not that hard of a concept.

You're so confused right now you have no idea what's going on...

Protip: if you're on the internet, your source doesn't exist unless you use a hyperlink.

[–]NoSubrannke -1 points0 points ago

Generalization as you defined it:

a proposition asserting something to be true either of all members of a certain class or of an indefinite part of that class.

Stereotypes:

a simplified and standardized conception or image invested with special meaning and held in common by members of a group

Word qualifiers. Use them. I don't need a hyperlink once I have cited my info. You cited an online dictionary. Amazing.

[–]I_WIN_DEAL_WITH_IT 0 points1 point ago

The problem with this comment is that you're not saying anything. You're merely repeating what I said with the erroneous notion that it somehow supports what you said. This is beyond hilarious and I will try to illustrate how retarded you are. Observe:

You said:

Mexicans have large families. If I meet Rosa, a Mexican woman, and I say to myself,** "Rosa is a Mexican; she must have a large family,"** I am stereotyping her.

Now you seem to think that this is stereotyping, even though it clearly is NOT "a simplified and standardized conception or image invested with special meaning and held in common by members of a group". It is, however, a proposition asserting something to be true of Mexicans, in that they "have large families". Thus, the hypothetical person in your example assumes that "Rosa", being a Mexican, has a large family. A stereotype of a Mexican would be something like a sleepy Mexican man wearing a poncho and sombrero, just like a stereotype of an American would be a fat, flag-waving idiot. Stereotypes are like general, often exaggerated place-holders for groups of people. Generalizations are traits of one person, or a small group of people, that are applied to large groups of people simply because of their relationship.

Word qualifiers. Use them.

Qualifiers. Fucking look them up. You don't know what that means either.

http://grammar.about.com/od/pq/g/qualifierterm.htm

A word or phrase that precedes an adjective or adverb, increasing or decreasing the quality signified by the word it modifies.

Here are the most common qualifiers in English (though some of these words have other functions as well): very, quite, rather, somewhat, more, most, less, least, too, so, just, enough, indeed, still, almost, fairly, really, pretty, even, a bit, a little, a (whole) lot, a good deal, a great deal,

More importantly, talking about "word qualifiers" changes nothing about the fact that you're utterly confused and simply trying to not lose the argument at this point.

I don't need a hyperlink once I have cited my info.

Yes, you do need to provide a link, otherwise your info could be improperly written or simply non-existent. At any rate, it's simply wrong, as I've demonstrated.

You cited an online dictionary. Amazing.

Yes, that's right. Why? Because you don't know the definitions of the words you're using. See how that works? So in my argument, I back up my assertion with the definitions of the words in question, whereas you cite some random source from somewhere (improperly, I might add), and it doesn't even follow the standard definition of the words either! Just because someone got their ideas published in a book doesn't make it correct.

To top things off, you're arguing with an English teacher here, so if you really think you're going to teach me a lesson in grammar, you've got quite another thing coming.

QUALIFIERS!!!

[–]NoSubrannke -1 points0 points ago

It's impossible to have a debate with someone who uses ad hominem attacks and a myriad of other personal logical fallacies in order to discredit my character (for instance, anyone can look up the book I presented by its title and author, this isn't an APA paper) while changing definitions and semantics to fit his own views.

[–]I_WIN_DEAL_WITH_IT -1 points0 points ago

No, it's impossible to have a debate with someone when you are confused about the meaning of simple words (even after they've been very clearly defined).

It's also impossible to win a debate when you resort to whining when you've clearly abandoned your argument because you can no longer defend it.

someone who uses ad hominem attacks and a myriad of other personal logical fallacies in order to discredit my character

Show me one example of any of that bullshit. I'd love to hear what you think an ad hominem attack is! This ought to be good!

for instance, anyone can look up the book I presented by its title and author, this isn't an APA paper

So basically you're so fucking lazy you expect me to validate your argument for you? How old are you??? And if you didn't notice, I destroyed the idea you cited, so it really just helped my argument more.

while changing definitions and semantics to fit his own views.

Are you fucking kidding me??? You're the one who tried to swap the definitions of the words. I stated the goddamn textbook definitions and then applied them to this exact situation you insufferable moron. You are clearly too retarded to know what's happening here and you're just hurling the best insults and erroneous digs you can come up with to try to save face, if only in your own eyes. But I know that you know you've been beaten. You tried so hard because you're not mature enough to accept when you're wrong about anything, and you'll keep denying it and keep trying to twist the argument to allow yourself to believe that you're right and I'm wrong, because your pathetic brain can't handle the reality of its own inadequacies, plastered here on the internet, though anonymously, for all to see, even though it's just me who is reading the pathetic bullshit you keep babbling. But I'm the one you need to impress the most with your "intellect" because I'm the one who said that you're wrong (well, apart from the dictionaries). But you're just digging your little hole deep, kid. But oh how I love to see idiots like you squirm when faced with their own idiocy.

Class dismissed, bitch.
