I live in the UK so my tips are coins :(

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

But you get paid more than US waiters, right? hopefully?

[–]neuromonkey 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

In real terms, yes, but the cost of living is similarly higher.

[–]live3orfry 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

... That depends entirely where you live.

[–]neuromonkey 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well, sure. Every time I've traveled in England, things have cost a fair bit more than they would have in the US. When I traveled around Ireland in the 80's, things were pretty cheap. This is aside from the exchange rate.

[–]heatheranne 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Except for servers in the UK are paid minimum wage at the lowest. In the US they rely on tips to bring their wage up to minimum.

[–]neuromonkey 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, well, try and have a decent pizza delivered.

[–]Tartickle 0 points1 point ago

In the US they rely on tips to bring their wage up to minimum.

Employers are legally required to bring their wage to minimum wage if the tips don't cover it.

[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Only bad servers in the US don't make minimum wage. A good server can make $100-$150/day.

Servers in the UK are hardly ever tipped except when a customer receives exceptional service.

I've been leaving origami tips for about 20 years now. My mom worked at a bank and had my original pieces on her desk, I sold a lot of those things to her customers. http://www.origami-resource-center.com/money-origami.html These are just a few. I've found all sorts of books.

edit: not my website, just the one I use when I forget a step or two.

[–]armchairepicure 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You should check out Folding the Universe by Peter Engel for THE BEST dollar origami i have ever had the pleasure of folding: the crab.

Sadly, i cannot find an image of the awesome crab, and my cameraphone is a potato. But let me assure you, it is worth the cost of the book.

Edit: plus, every time i give it out, i can say that i'm giving a waiter crabs.

The meal could have been $10 or less. In which case that is 20% or higher tipping.

[–]dexterduck 5 points6 points ago

Haha, my favourite part of this picture is actually the metal insert that your fingers are posing on. I work in a restaurant too and it's always interesting to see how similar all the equipment is- I didn't know what an insert was until I started working in a restaurant.

EDIT: Grammar.

[–]nefffffffffff 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

you guys every restaurant uses these, they're standardized.

[–]idoubtthestars 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, it's just interesting because a person who isn't familiar with the industry wouldn't necessarily know what they were called. When I was a hostess, I had no idea what they were. I only learned about them when I became a server/expediter. It's a just a minor detail I noticed.

[–]nickkline 0 points1 point ago

For high school junior prom, we went to dinner and what not. We left the guy dozens and dozens of dollar bills tied like little bow ties, and just piled them up in the center of the table. As we were leaving, the waiter was just standing over laughing at the pile of bow ties. It was glorious.

[–]Capper22 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Alright serious question, I can do some decent dollar origami, would you rather your tip be normal bills or shirts/pants/boots/spaceships etc.?

[–]icecreamguy 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Hah, nice, though there is a caveat. I used to leave part of the tip in the form of an origami peacock at restaurants until one day, as I was leaving, I saw the waiter trying to unfold it and accidentally tear the crap out of the bill. Whoops!

[–]scisrbeatpapr 0 points1 point ago

I threw a bachelorette party for a friend and we started with dinner. I really wanted to do something creative like this with the tip money since we'd been flirting with the waiter all night, but I have no creative genes. I folded a dick and balls for him. So sexy.

[–]Annakha 6 points7 points ago

I'm surprised everyone is so happy about this tip. I always tip 20% unless the server was completely retarded. I see older folks get away with tipping 2 bucks all the time and people shrug it off as, oh they're old they don't realize that the times have changed. Of course they fucking know that things are more expensive, they just paid $15 for a steak that used to cost $3. Instead of tipping 20% I guess I need to learn dollar bill origami and then my server will be just as happy.

[–]wx3 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah there's no way the tab was $8.00 and it was a 25% tip or anything

[–]shawtywtits 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

that's still part of who OP is. maybe "he's a joker, he's a smoker, he's a midnight toker" and also he's a waiter.

[–]Joke_Getter -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, a small part. I'm trying to help the guy up, why are you so determined to hold him down? "I'm waiting tables right now." What's wrong with that?

[–]shawtywtits 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

what's wrong with being a waiter? no one cares how you say it, it doesn't change anything. trying to force accuracy of language isn't going to affect things. people speak according to ease- it's short to say "I'm a waiter" than to say "I'm waiting tables right now, but someday I'm going to run away to las vegas and be an actor, don't forget that I'm a human being with hopes and dreams."

[–]Joke_Getter 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

As you've just demonstrated, the rest of that sentence after "I'm waiting tables right now" is implied and doesn't need to be said. Thanks for the agreement! Let's hope the OP takes us up on it.

[–]shawtywtits 0 points1 point ago
