If that impresses you, watch this.
The rope around the neck is mostly to give her a place to put her hands, although as a reining horse he's been trained to turn at the slightest touch of a rein to his neck so it functions for that as well. She's primarily riding with her body though.

If I'm ever able to follow my dream and get a horse, I can only hope for a fraction of the talent and the mutual devotion these two show here. Not to say I wouldn't love my horse (and hopefully he love me), but the bond they seem to share I imagine is hard to achieve.

Exactly. I am blessed enough to have a horse, and as special as our bond is it is nothing like the one she shares with her horse. Hers is so majestic, while ours is more like the bond between two best friends in kindergarten who keep wiping their boogers on each others desk and giggling.

um from what i remember, only novices over-use the hands. you have to be carefull otherwise you can choke the horse with the... oh man they had a special name for the gag thingy that went into the horses mouth. oh and i remember thinking that must be really uncomfortable for the horse, but nope, i actually read that its quite comfortable, and that its supposed to sit behind their teeth on their gums. i think.. im trying to do this all form memory. what a fun game!

I used to horseback ride! The thing that goes in his mouth is a bit and the whole thing is a bridle (might be other names for it, not sure). They have a space behind their teeth for the bit so it doesn't hurt them. You're not supposed to pull on the reins (the rope part that you hold in your hands), you're just supposed to gently squeeze them. Legs are most important. They help with turning, but also you squeeze/kick to get into a trot, then canter. Gallop is next but I never did that.

On the contrary, there are bits made that apply more/different pressure on the horses mouth, some do in fact pain the horse when pressure is applied by pulling the reins, which is supposed to get the horse to obey your hand signals more. But really it's just compensation for poor riding on the human's part.

Horses usually move away from pressure. When you apply it to one side they will move away from that side, use both legs and they will move forward away from the pressure.

Horse rider here! The thing that goes in their mouth is called a bit :) A horses mouth is very sensitive so if you pull on the reins to hard it can hurt them. Not only do you use your legs, hands and voice to control a horse, you also use your seat, so body pressure.

Horse crap only turns into those "road apples" after it dries out. It comes out of the horse more wet and solid than that. And as Kitteez mentions below, the angle is all wrong. The horse's asshole would have to be above his tale for it to fall that way.

This, and the way the horse's tail just happens to move out of the shot rather that just rising naturally tells me someone moved the tail and dumped a bucket of road apples on her head.

This could only fool someone who is unfamiliar with horses. Which is a lot of people nowadays.
