  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

Imagine this eclipse had happened this time last year, the guy who said the world was ending on the 21st would have shat himself.

EDIT: because we all make mistakes sometimes

[–]DownvoteDaemon 216 points217 points ago

That makes me wonder what ancient humans would have thought.

[–]JohnnyGilbert 16 points17 points ago

Many ancient cultures had pretty sophisticated systems of understanding astronomy. That's not to say there wasn't ever a whole lot of extra meaning ascribed to phenomena, but it would be a mistake to believe everyone up until the Enlightenment were only capable of understanding things at face value and then making wild stories out of it.

The way in which a culture's beliefs interact with its scientific understanding can be complicated. Actually — and I'm certainly no expert, but the sense I get is that many cultures paid such close attention to astronomy precisely BECAUSE they held their extra beliefs around empirical phenomena like eclipses so profoundly. Beliefs aren't always clearly delineated in a faith vs. science dichotomy.

(That ended up sounding a lot more New-Agey "ancient aliens" than I had hoped...)

[–]GraduallyImpolite 6 points7 points ago

It is truly a shame that religion has been so poorly used and abused over the years by men with much ambition and few scruples. While I don't agree with many of the outmoded strictures laid out in the bible and other religious texts, it is difficult not to appreciate the basic tenets of most monotheistic religions (honesty, compassion, love) unless you're a hopeless reprobate. I'm not knocking atheists in general, just the misinformed meatbag I'm currently replying to. You're a hate blinded idiot if you think that religion, and not man, is to blame for the crimes committed in its name. You are no different that the religious lunatics you've chosen to hate you festering syphilitic duck billed platypus, you're so bloated with intolerance that I'm amazed you don't explode into a shower of half rotten radioactive feces.

[–][deleted] 54 points55 points ago

uneducated masses of the past

That must explain all the religious doctors, lawyers, scientists, mathematicians, philosophers today....remember even the most educated men of the time were convinced the Earth was flat/center of the Universe. There is no telling how many things we know about the universe are wrong.

[–]wilsongs 77 points78 points ago

In fact, the idea that people used to believe the earth was flat is one of the most common historical myths. Since about the 3rd century BC, no educated person has believed the earth is flat. Source: http://www.veritas-ucsb.org/library/russell/FlatEarth.html

[–]leandrotami 36 points37 points ago

Flat Earth Society

no educated person

That is the key part.

[–]dustinechos 4 points5 points ago

You just got trolled. No one on that site believes a word they say.

[–]effervescence 2 points3 points ago

Flat Earth Society

His system, called Zetetic Astronomy, held that the earth is a flat disk centered at the North Pole and bounded along its southern edge by a wall of ice, with the sun, moon, planets, and stars only a few hundred miles above the surface of the earth.

This seems easy enough to disprove. Fly their leader from Australia to South America, straight over Antarctica. Let him bring whatever mapping equipment he wants to satisfy him of his location, and that there certainly is a South Pole, instead of a "wall of ice".

[–]leandrotami 1 point2 points ago

I actually tried to get an answer from them about this. I'm Argentine and I know for a fact that our flagship airline had regular transpolar flights to Australia. I wanted them to explain how it was possible to get from one point to the other so quickly. I got trolled, obviously.

[–]CombatWaitress 2 points3 points ago

OH LAWD that is hilarious! They are convinced that... after... years of science has been enough to prove that it's... and, and seasons...

FFFF they're all LITERATE, too! HOW DOES THAT HAPPEN!

Thanks for showing me that site, dude... the forums were TOO. MUCH. I can't go back. But knowing it exists and checking it out have totally destroyed some of my faith in humanity in the funniest way possible. Oh gosh thank you for my daily slice of retarded.<3

[–]dustinechos 4 points5 points ago

They're trolling you. No one on that site believes the earth is flat.

[–]CombatWaitress 2 points3 points ago

Oh. Thank you. That's... quite elaborate? Why would they bother?

I guess I believed it because there are definitely entire communities of, say, white supremacists and conspiracy theorists who think all the United States presidents were Lizard-Humanoid aliens. So you know, crazy is everywhere...

[–]dustinechos 1 point2 points ago

My view is that flat earth started as a legit site. Then people started using it to practice their arguing skills, even going as far as to say "I bet I can invent a system of physics that fits this messed up world view." Kind of a fun game for an extreme physics nerd.

But if you look through their forums it's a joke. Usually they have avatars that tip their hats to the prank. Once I went there and everyone had cartoon troll avatars like this guy:

http://www.memes.at/animations/troll%20dancing.gif

[–]Underbyte 1 point2 points ago

I dont get it. The earth has been empirically observed to be spherical by astronauts. What gives?

[–]dustinechos 1 point2 points ago

They are trolls. Read the intro message very carefully.

[–]Lambchops_Legion 1 point2 points ago

yeah well what about before 3rd century BC? Hm?

[–]deuteros 1 point2 points ago

Since about the 3rd century BC, no educated person has believed the earth is flat.

Chinese science taught that the earth was flat until they came in contact with Jesuit missionaries in the 17th century.

Millions of Fox News watchers would agree with you.

[–]Legit_Comment 1 point2 points ago

In the Qu'ran, there is a verse about the moon splitting. An eclipse may have been the inspiration.

[–]gofastdsm 1 point2 points ago

Not exactly ancient but we could still have some fun with them

[–]rubicon11 10 points11 points ago

That was a year ago? I remember driving in the car with my brother and sister with REM's 'It's The End of the World' blaring in the car. Wow, time really flies!

[–]DrVoodoo 18 points19 points ago

Harold Camping for the lazy.

[–]spacedout83 36 points37 points ago

In March 2012, he stated that his attempt to predict a date was "sinful", and that his critics had been right in pointing to the words of Matthew 24:36: "of that day and hour knoweth no man". He added that he was now searching the Bible "even more fervently… not to find dates, but to be more faithful in our understanding."

Kind of big of the guy to admit he was wrong, very wrong, and to use it as an opportunity to seek further knowledge. Flawed as many think his source of further knowledge may be, at least he's trying, instead of banging his original drum even louder, like most zealots would do.

Almost makes me feel bad for the guy.

Almost.

[–]DrVoodoo 14 points15 points ago

I almost feel bad for the people who spent their own money to advertise his pending apocalypse. A guy from New York spent $140,000.

Family Radio spent $100 million. And the overall donations were massive:

As Saturday drew nearer, followers reported that donations grew, allowing Family Radio to spend millions on more than 5,000 billboards and 20 RVs plastered with the doomsday message. In 2009, the nonprofit reported in IRS filings that it received $18.3 million in donations, and had assets of more than $104 million, including $34 million in stocks or other publicly traded securities.

Of course, the money couldn't possibly have been the motivation, right?

[–]hivemindharvest 6 points7 points ago

don't feel bad for him he has his own Wikipedia article now!

[–]timeshifter_ 1 point2 points ago

Kinda sad that someone so apparently devout in his studies would believe in the first place that he could know the day, even when the object of all his studies clearly says he can't.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points ago

A Balrog of Morgoth to be exact.

[–]rocketwikkit 1 point2 points ago

I was going to title it as balrog rather than fire demon, but the balrog from the lotr movie has his horns curve down.

[–]nssmuckers 1 point2 points ago

From the lowest dungeon to the highest peak. I fought him, the Balrog of Morgoth. Until at last, I threw down my enemy and SMOTE HIS RUIN UPON THE MOUN-TAIN-SIIIDE.

Fire demon must have gotten the memo that Dean Winchester was busy in Purgatory.

[–]proddy 40 points41 points ago

Scumbag Cas: says you'll be ripped to shreds. Leaves.

[–]cZaro 45 points46 points ago

Good Guy Cas: Says sorry with a board game

[–]jlv816 15 points16 points ago

Scumbag Dean: Doesn't get the metaphor.

[–]cZaro 7 points8 points ago

wouldn't it be Scumbag Dean: throws it across the room ?

[–]jlv816 5 points6 points ago

That too.

[–][deleted] 18 points19 points ago

at least he didn't get naked and go looking for some purgatory bees.

[–]LadyGriggs 2 points3 points ago

I know he left, I mean i saw that part. But I somehow missed where he went when he left Dean and why. Can y'all fill me in?

And I know this was a season finale so I know they were going to do something to screw the Winchesters over again, but damn, those poor boys!

[–]BeastWith2Backs 2 points3 points ago

He just went to scout out the area (I think)

[–]LadyGriggs 1 point2 points ago

I was thinking that, but wasn't sure and was kind of worried for Dean (ok, really worried, lol).

[–]BeastWith2Backs 4 points5 points ago

Yeah, i cannot wait for the return. Probably gonna reopen with Dean sitting in a tree freaking out.

[–]LadyGriggs 3 points4 points ago

I'm surprised he hasn't cracked yet to be honest.

[–]jlv816 2 points3 points ago

Where Cas went and why is unknown, but it seemed like he got some of his marbles back to me. He was all serious business like usual, not so much with bees and flowers lol. I'm sure he just went to find something or be helpful in some other way, but that ending was awesome. Poor Sammy! Haha.

Edit: I don't think you can die in purgatory, if its anything like hell you just regenerate to be ripped to shreds all over again. Something tells me Dean might not mind perpetual hunting and dying. Also I wonder how relatively fast/slow time moves or if it's the same as earth. Season 8 is going to be awesome.

[–]jlv816 12 points13 points ago

Flowers come first, obviously.

[–]ItsyBitsyTime 1 point2 points ago

I guess what Im saying is I would rather have insects to angles

[–]jlv816 1 point2 points ago

You're off your rocker. He's off his rocker, isn't he?

[–]Poogiticus 4 points5 points ago

I don't know, in those last few seconds of the show Cas sounded like his reasonable old self again. I know he left, but I feel like he's gonna pop right back in the beginning of next season -- like he left to go scout the place out real quick.

[–]dare2dan 1 point2 points ago

I actually thought even the tone of his voice was different. More like original-Cas instead of cuckoo-for-coco-puffs-Cas. Of course it was only a few seconds, so he might still be completely crazy. We'll just have to wait and see!

[–]ghastlyactions 20 points21 points ago

Why would you be driving and not get out and see ?

Watching a full eclips is an amzing thing and something that should be done at least one time before a person dies.

I watched on on a hill in France in the countryside , A nice advantage of being in the countryside is you get to see all the birds get trolled by the sun , with them flying around like crazy thinking its time to nest only to have full sunlight right after.

being on-top of a hill is good as you can see the light change in the distance , A full eclipse allso gives you that weird end of the world / your life is so small and pathetic sort of feeling as well .

I'm sorry if you didn't know, but that "fire demon" is the sun. It is located off of the earth and actually warms us and has no intent to kill. It might be unnoticeable to some, because the heat it produces does not go through thick opaque walls like to houses or computer rooms. Don't worry you're not alone it took me a while to stop sacrifices and habituate to it.
