I want to know why people are being downvoted for saying this image affected them. Can someone give me a good reason? Or are you all just a bunch of assholes?

[–]JasonUncensored 7 points8 points ago

Mostly the asshole thing.

I know Canada gets a lot of crap from us Americans, but we're in this together guys, and we love you for it.

[–]Zahlhedren336 9 points10 points ago

End the war.

[–]Synthetics66 2 points3 points ago

As a vet who was combat wounded in the US Army serving in Iraq, this picture hits me just as hard. No matter your color, language or home land, dying in service to your country is the ultimate sacrifice. The greatest honor you could do the fallen, is by always remembering who they were.

Rest well Soldier, your war is now done.

*Edit - as for the probable negative comments I'll muster from my admission to being combat wounded in Iraq, I'd like to point out that serving my country was something I planned to do, and signed up for after I graduated HS in 2000.

[–]redditezmode 0 points1 point ago

Killing Iraqis for oil on orders from Bush isn't in service to the people of the country at all. The man in the picture up there, died so someone could make money.

That's why it hits home for me, because it's someone who died utterly pointlessly.

It may seem patriotic to die in service to your country, but the war we're fighting isn't about that, you were not protecting American citizens, you signed up to be in a private army that was used to make someone a profit. You did it because you're a patriot, and no one should question that, ever, because those who go to war are laying down their lives.

But even though you joined the military because you wanted to serve the country you love, that's not what you were doing, you were being used for private interests. It's not your fault, but it's still true. That said, upvoted.

[–]greggg230 0 points1 point ago

Sorry to break it to you, but you weren't serving your country.

[–]bigpapabeef -1 points0 points ago

little do you know.... /tin foil hat

[–]CanadianGuy84 5 points6 points ago

This makes me want to go back to the fight. I shed a tear as soon as I saw this picture.

[–]JONNYHOOG 8 points9 points ago

why would seeing a dead soldier make you want to go Back to war?? ** edit not trying to be snarky, true question

[–]trojans231 -1 points0 points ago

Because he would rather die in place of another soldier with a family, with a home, with a future.

[–]JONNYHOOG -1 points0 points ago

youre answering for him? how do you know thats what he meant?

[–]trojans231 -1 points0 points ago

I've known plenty of soldier in my short time on this Earth. If someone dies, all in the group feel guilty. The mentality is: I could have saved him, I could have died instead of him, he had a family.

[–]FCSFCS 2 points3 points ago

Me too. I feel like it's not fair that I'm home with my family and doing what I want when my brothers in arms are out there sleeping in dirt and going days without showers. Why should I get to take it easy when the job's not done?

[–]cyberslick188 -1 points0 points ago

Why should you risk your life, others lives all for a chance at needlessly ending even more lives?

There is nothing to win in this war, there never was. We aren't fighting for our freedom and we aren't fighting for theirs.

I feel like it's not fair that I'm home with my family and doing what I want when my brothers in arms are out there sleeping in dirt and going days without showers.

There isn't a single person over there that didn't want to be.

[–]FCSFCS 0 points1 point ago

I was 21 when 9/11 happened; it happened well into adulthood for me and affected me profoundly, as it did for most Americans. I've already been downrange. I made a commitment to my country and my fellow troops and I wish I could've seen the war through to the end.

It's not about politics, though. Right, wrong or indifferent, I should still be a part of the fight until things like this stop happening. It's about something bigger than myself - a family of service members, my old unit, my service, my military - a brotherhood; an unspoken bond with other vets. This man has friends, hopes and dreams. Somewhere, a family is shattered. Maybe if I had been there I could've affected the outcome for the better in some small way. Probably not, but that doesn't mean I shouldn't have tried to make a difference for someone.

[–]cyberslick188 1 point2 points ago

None of what you said should entail killing other people over. You can gain those same emotions and bonds over almost anything.

Sorry, this whole circlejerk of "brotherhood, something larger" is just inane rambling. Most soldiers aren't solving the problem, they are exacerbating the problem.

It's absolutely about politics and about almost nothing else. The answer to those areas has never been war, yet we somehow hope to change it with war. Soldiers are smart people, and they need to smarten up and drop the circlejerk, look at their surroundings and get the fuck home.

We need nurses, paramedics, firemen, police officers, factory workers, entrepreneurs, businessmen, honest politicians and so on FAR more than we need grunts terrorizing the middle east while destroying our economy. I don't see what is so hard to see about this.

[–]FCSFCS 0 points1 point ago

See, you don't understand, and that's my fault for giving a piece of myself away in the hopes that you might allow it to broaden your horizons.

Why do you think it's OK to marginalize other people's feelings like that? Why do you think what you have to say is more important than what I have to say? These are my honest thoughts and my genuine feelings that I put out here for authentic discourse. If you have all the answers, why are you not doing something productive about it instead of insulting people on reddit?

[–]Asyx 4 points5 points ago

He probably thinks that his words matter more than you because his words don't promote killing as some kind of good thing or acceptable. The last statistic I've seen said that 125,000 civilians died in this war. How do the lost lives of 3000 Americans justify the deaths of 40 times more middle east civilians? You want to bring piece to everybody with your service? Your "brotherhood" just executed a murderer without a fair trail. That is not piece, that is brutal revenge. And you'll probably think that this is justified because "this murderer killed a lot of Americans"... Well... A judge doesn't cut the throat of a rapist because he has a daughter in the victims age. He feels hate and anger but he is a judge and knows that he has to stand over his feelings.

You think he insulted you? He wouldn't do any productive with his life? What have you done? Killed some people? Fought a war? Congratulation. You are such a man.

Every war after the WW2 was unjustified. Everybody who fought in WW2 has my deepest respect and feelings because this war released whole Europe (and probably more) from a tyran and dictator who killed at least 10 million people "just 'cause". The man you've fought killed 3000 people. Many more died while your "brotherhood" tried to find him.

There is no honour in todays wars. The Nazis showed how awful modern warfare can be. I've read a lot of horrible stuff from people on reddit who served as well and were in the middle east 3 or more times.

You'd probably have done a way more honourable thing if you'd have fed the poor in your city or helped the old to have some nice last days in their life. But no. You decided that a war is more productive. In 60 years, the children in the middle east of today will have grandchildren and those will see the same empty and sad look in the faces of their grandparents todays generations see on their own grandparents faces, if they fought or lived in the war zones of WW2, every time a war is mentioned. I hope your decorations and medals fit.

[–]cyberslick188 0 points1 point ago

I mostly agree with this, but I would say I respect Vietnam veterans because of the draft.

[–]Asyx 0 points1 point ago

I have only a bit knowledge about the Vietnam war. I only know that it was senseless and a rough time for the soldiers. I feel more sympathy because of the horrible things they've managed to survive without turning mad rather than what they've done.

[–]cyberslick188 -2 points-1 points ago

When your feelings are revolving around the murder of other people, justified or not, I think it's pretty easy to marginalize them.

I'm sure your feelings are genuine. So are the psychopath's, so are the suicide bombers, so are the child rapists. Am I comparing you to these people? Absolutely not. Are these people's emotions as real and genuine as yours? Yes.

The legitimacy of your emotions says nothing of the validity and usefulness of them.

I don't have all the answers, but I'm not exactly on shaky ground when I say that violence is not the answer for the middle east. What insults are you talking about? Calling out nonsense and demagoguery isn't an insult, it's a truth.

I respect discourse, but I don't see what anything you've said brings to that table. Simply saying things like "serving something greater than myself, brotherhood, brothers and sister etc" doesn't mean anything. It means nothing, it's just demagoguery.

At the end of the day you are promoting violence and murder and I'm promoting reasonable economic measures. This war has not worked. The Russian Afghan war did not work. No war in that area has worked, and for obvious reasons. If you honestly think this was a legitimate war to protect our national security and not simply a war to fund military subsidized corporations you are simply ignorant of the truth.

We have people in our own country who can't rub two dimes together for a slice of bread to eat tonight and we are spending trillions overseas to kill a group of less than 20,000 uneducated, under armed and under supported rebel groups. Are you seriously defending this? Seriously? You'd rather see us wipe out a group of rebel goat herders 2000 miles away than feed the unemployed homeless in your own city? That's simple immoral, and shame on you if you honestly think our military activities are doing a net good.

[–]rockafireexplosion 0 points1 point ago

Look, I don't support the war in Afghanistan. There's no doubt that it is an enormous, tragic drain of lives and resources, and I don't think that this war has been anywhere near successful in accomplishing its goal of stabilizing the region or protecting American lives (in fact it has done almost the opposite). Soldiers, however, don't dictate policy. They don't decide where they go or why they fight. They didn't create this conflict, and I'm sure most of those men and women would rather live in a world where they didn't need to fight. No soldier in their right mind likes war, or killing the enemy, it's something that takes a tremendous psychological toll on all of them, aside from the tremendous physical toll of casualties. War is an evil thing, and all wars are (on some level) wasteful and unnecessary, but those that fight in them are not. Just because they don't see the world in the same way as you doesn't mean they are

The soldiers in the photo above are mourning a death. Maybe they didn't know the man in the casket, but they probably knew someone who died or was wounded.

The cost of war isn't just the trillions of dollars spent on weapons and supplies, it's their everyday experience. It's easy for you to look at them and call them murderers just for serving in the military, and to call their camaraderie demagoguery, but I'd like to hear you say that while looking one of them in the eye. Someone who lost their best friend, or was paralyzed, or lost a limb. For many. You don't have to love the war to have compassion for people who have endured things you can't possibly imagine. It's called empathy. Learn it.

Not that it matters, but the guy towards the back looks like tim olyphant.

Something that always pulls at my heart strings, is men crying. And I am a hard arse bitch. You men (and women) are all HEROES.

[–]windtonic 1 point2 points ago

I know the first guy from right to left. This was a while ago. I wanted to send him the link but I don't have the heart, I'm sure it will bring him to tears.

You're a good guy Mike.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Bring them home.

[–]SquirtLikeABoss 2 points3 points ago

This is one of the first images to make me cry in a few years.

[–]lolsv -1 points0 points ago

Why, OP? People die all the time. Did a family member die in war?

[–]JasonUncensored 0 points1 point ago

Why?

[–]StrongKindGentle 0 points1 point ago

Peace and blessings to you. You're in my prayers.
