The 1600th century huh?

[–]goofandaspoof 9 points10 points ago

God damn you, now I have to find that episode and watch it again. I'm laughing just thinking about it. (edit: spelling)

In the year 252525...

[–]PNJL[S] 34 points35 points ago

Sorry, non-american. We don't use those terms.

edit - It is actually the 18th century. I wasn't sure if it described the century that had passed or the one to come.

[–]OnyxPhoenix 47 points48 points ago

Pretty sure he was pointing out that it was the 1600th century, which I think would correspond to the years 159900 to 159999 AD.

[–]Tfish 23 points24 points ago

This may possibly be what lions actually looked like at that point in time. We simply just don't have complete fossil records.

[–]OmegaX123 2 points3 points ago

159900 to 159999 AD.

.

looked like at that point in time.

ಠ_ಠ

So what's life like in 201200 AD?

[–]fries_in_a_cup 25 points26 points ago

Everything is chrome.

[–]Lukersmexican 5 points6 points ago

What about that plant over there?

[–]Solidbob 9 points10 points ago

And everything's comin up Milhouse

[–]libertasmens 4 points5 points ago

I hope you're not trying to make a meme, 'cause that's not a meme.

[–]ZeroPointTwo 0 points1 point ago

Well it beats internet explorer..

[–]chchrogers 4 points5 points ago

I'd assume the lions just get even weirder looking.

[–]Jymotion 17 points18 points ago

I didn't realize it was an American thing. Yeah 18th century would be the 1700's

[–]PNJL[S] 14 points15 points ago

I don't think it is. I was just pointing out that I don't possess the same English-speaking skills as the majority of the people here on reddit.

edit - spelling error

[–]shieldwolf 14 points15 points ago

FYI it points out which century you are or would be IN given a date. If you are in year 23AD it would be the 1st century (years 0-99), since saying you are in the 0th century makes no sense and it is indeed the FIRST century. If you are in 1898 you are in the 19th century. 1984 is (in) the 20th century etc. The rule essentially is to add a century to the century in a given date (this is true even for B.C.).

[–]Zjarek 1 point2 points ago

For the sake of completeness there is no year 0, only 1AD and 1BC. So first century is years 1-100, not 0-99 (and year 2000 is 20th century).

[–]LegesAequitas 1 point2 points ago

Yeah, it's just an English speaking thing. You can say either the 1600s or the 17th century. They're the same thing.

[–]d-giraffe-b 2 points3 points ago

[–]TreeRifik 5 points6 points ago

I didn't realize it was an American thing....but just so you can learn a little more today...

It's pretty easy to remember if you think about it. The 1st century would be years 0-99, which would make the 100's the 2nd century, the 200's the 3rd, and so forth.

I always had trouble remembering it too, until somebody explained it to me.

[–]chetlin 1 point2 points ago

I think it's pretty common usage in a lot of countries though. I remember when I took French, the 18th century was referred to as something like XVIIIe siècle.

Hover your mouse over all the languages on the left side here and look at the url at the bottom to see how it's said in that language.

[–]pacofvf -2 points-1 points ago

LOL

something like XVIIIe siècle.

I don't know french but I do know roman numbers, XVIII = 18.

Sorry, non-american. We don't use those terms.

Where in the world doesn't know the difference between centuries and years?

[–]ZmakiZ 5 points6 points ago

Well, he's likely Swedish, and in swedish "the 18th century" translates to "1700-talet" (roughly "the ages of the 1700s"). As a Swede myself, I also find it confusing sometimes not naming the century you're in from the first digits.

So its not about knowing the difference between years and centuries, its simply difficult translating.

[–]birjolaxew 1 point2 points ago

In Danish you can say either "1700-tallet" (1700s, the 1700 number if translated exactly) or "det attende århundrede" (the 18th century). I've never heard anyone say "1700-erne" which would be the direct translation of the 1700s (though we do say 80-erne for the 80s). It's interesting how different we count, seeing how related our languages are.

[–]trua 2 points3 points ago

This is the same in Finnish. It is a huge obstacle for Finns when learning English and French.

[–]Lippuringo 1 point2 points ago

Glad to hear, that there is no America in 1600th century

[–]Moopies 1 point2 points ago

Haha no worries, sir.

[–]youstolemyname 2 points3 points ago

In the future lions are extinct

[–]exitpursuedbybear 1 point2 points ago

In the year 2525...

[–]stringerbell 1 point2 points ago

The taxidermist wasn't familiar with time-traveling lions either...

[–]clemdia 0 points1 point ago

In the future, there will be lions.

[–]Guest_Acct 0 points1 point ago

Looks like a screamer.

[–]german_bruce_lee 0 points1 point ago

Nooope!

[–]thyssyk 0 points1 point ago

I laughed out loud when I read the post title because I knew the first comment would be about the "1600th Century", but now I wonder if taxidermists in the 1600th will piece together something like that with the belief it's accurate.

[–]Jacktheawesome -4 points-3 points ago

FUCK you stole my comment :(

[–]Daughedm 47 points48 points ago

Looks oddly similar to the Detroit Tigers old logo

[–]youstolemyname 54 points55 points ago

Its not even sure of itself.

[–]Firstprime 48 points49 points ago

It looks terrified of its own mouth.

[–]Dat_Karmavore 21 points22 points ago

"damn, those look sharp, I sure hope I don't bite my own to- DAMNIT"

[–]Ferretpuke 25 points26 points ago

That... that thing... used to be their logo?

[–]donwess 36 points37 points ago

It was probably voted in by the people of Detroit.

[–]RyanFuller003 19 points20 points ago

Fuck you.

[–]ultimapanzer 4 points5 points ago

Also designed by someone who had never seen a lion.

[–]mushmancat 9 points10 points ago

Lucky for him its a tiger.

[–]Hero_of_Hyrule 2 points3 points ago

That looks like something drawn in mspaint... and rather poorly at that.

[–]atuan 38 points39 points ago

[–]dawsoncrying -1 points0 points ago

hahahaha

[–]marsneedstowels 64 points65 points ago

[–]geyserguy92 19 points20 points ago

Scandinavia and the World is probably one of my favorite webcomics. Even though, as an American, many of the jokes are kilometers above my head.

[–]Akakaburito 9 points10 points ago

Same here(Canadian). But they're just so cute!

[–]ThePickleMan 4 points5 points ago

I just wish it updated more frequently...

[–]Magdargi 1 point2 points ago

I agree, my reaction was "I'm sure that said Sweden but it's gotta be Finland, SatW taught me that shit."

[–]Pargelenis 43 points44 points ago

It looks just like Dug from Up.

[–]Romanav 8 points9 points ago

I thought his name was Doug, is it Dug?

Serious question ^

[–]MollyConnollyxx 11 points12 points ago

[–]Romanav 6 points7 points ago

Huh, TIL

Cool

[–]appleofpine 19 points20 points ago

The moment I saw the title and 61 comments i knew what ALL THE COMMENTS WERE ABOUT.

[–]mushmancat 7 points8 points ago

Hurr, fuchur loin!!! Lololololololololol.

[–]octoplasm 43 points44 points ago

maybe that's just what lions look like in the future.

[–]WildMagnemite -1 points0 points ago

Well, they have become a lot less intimidating, haven't they Jeffrey?

[–]bitch_im_a_lion 13 points14 points ago

From a different angle. It's possible that he wanted to portray it as fierce from this angle, but didn't consider what the front would look like.

[–]jknotts 2 points3 points ago

Bitch_im_a_lion:

With actual lion expertise

[–]shieldwolf 10 points11 points ago

Now just think how far off we are when we are thinking what dinosaurs looked like...

[–]Toyotaobsession 9 points10 points ago

Thanks to the last time this was reposted I now know it looks like that because the taxidermist was brought a pelt and a vauge description of what it looked like.

Pretty accurate considering he had nothing to go off of but word of mouth.

[–]fomorian 6 points7 points ago

That's prolly why their lionsa re so f-ed up on their coat of arms and suchlike. It looks like a bloody cartoon.

[–]PNJL[S] 11 points12 points ago

Ahh, the medieval rage comics.

[–]splorng 1 point2 points ago

Heraldry = medieval rage comics? Brilliant!

[–]username-alzheimers 6 points7 points ago

A for effort.

[–]PNJL[S] 0 points1 point ago

This made me smile.

[–]nolanator 16 points17 points ago

TIL future lions are crazy as fuck!

[–]Bikbok 22 points23 points ago

that lion has a strong resembly to swedes

[–]greedo_posted_first 50 points51 points ago

Nice try, Norway.

[–]Bikbok 25 points26 points ago

[–]thenorwegianblue 0 points1 point ago

[–]DingDongSeven 0 points1 point ago

Swedes descended from hedgehogs, damnit. It is known.

[–]libertasmens 0 points1 point ago

I like the way you ended that. I need to start using that sentence...

[–]LunaCumberbitch 2 points3 points ago

Oh, you!

[–]ponyboy226 2 points3 points ago

I LOLed for so many reasons on this post. Thank you for making my day :)

[–]N3PHxx 2 points3 points ago

trollface : Lion Edition

[–]uberkonsumer 2 points3 points ago

...or Taxidermy apparently.

[–]Bandgeekof15 2 points3 points ago

They shoulda called Chuck Testa -__-'

[–]CircleOfNoms 5 points6 points ago

Ah yes, the year 160,000, very good year.

[–]Whelks 12 points13 points ago

159,999*

[–]ApocaLiz 1 point2 points ago

Great, here's my nightmare fuel for the next few weeks.

[–]wutwoot 1 point2 points ago

Is it alive?

[–]Jaboomaphoo 1 point2 points ago

I'm guessing that Swedes in the 1600's were far more frightened of lions than people who'd actually seen lions.

[–]willscy 1 point2 points ago

16th century is actually 1500-1599

[–]Jaboomaphoo 1 point2 points ago

I assumed he meant 1600's and that was a typo.

[–]willscy 0 points1 point ago

understandable.

[–]HomeButton 1 point2 points ago

It looks like one of the beasts from Where the Wild Things Are

[–]JAEitler 1 point2 points ago

This screams DERP.

[–]UncleBenjen 1 point2 points ago

i WISH i was there when the taxidermist presented this to their client. Mustve been the awkwardest exchange of goods that has ever taken place...

[–]Jyrroe 1 point2 points ago

I saw this in a collection of other unfortunate animals. Was surprised no one linked to it in the comments. Anyone know what I'm talking about?

[–]ThompsonBoy 1 point2 points ago

TIL Googly eyes have been around for over 300 years.

[–]modifieddevice 1 point2 points ago

The op must be John Titor.

[–]KevinBevinBoBevin 1 point2 points ago

the future don't know shit about lions.

[–]nickyobro 1 point2 points ago

Just so you know, the 22 century has yet to come. If this is the first lion then that place is pretty fuckin far behind everyone else

[–]themarknessmonster 1 point2 points ago

All I could think of was this...

I'm surprised nobody else posted it yet.

[–]kravitzz 1 point2 points ago

You probably thought this lion was alive. It never was, it's just a piece of pure art shittyness.

[–]tiddler 1 point2 points ago

Taxiderpist

[–]Fenixx117 1 point2 points ago

The first lion from the future

[–]rtccola 1 point2 points ago

Nope Chuck Testa.

[–]secondhartbeat 1 point2 points ago

I'm curious as to why no one has mentioned that lions are total carnivores, yet this guy has the flat, grounding teeth that look to me like those of herbivores? Where's his canines, man?

[–]Monstrosity12 2 points3 points ago

This should go in r/wtf....

[–]hyperion23 2 points3 points ago

so it was the year 159900?

[–]ultimapanzer 1 point2 points ago

In the 1600th century, mankind rebuilds. We start again.

[–]Nate1492 2 points3 points ago

Chuck Testa? Nope.

[–]Lt_Shniz 0 points1 point ago

A little creepy, but I like it.

[–]wrongbuton 0 points1 point ago

bad taxidermy makes me so sad...

[–]mushmancat 0 points1 point ago

Totally

[–]wobwobwobbuffet 0 points1 point ago

I'm not sure, but wasn't this actually an attempt at making it so that the final product resembled a heraldic lion?

[–]PNJL[S] 0 points1 point ago

Nope. The lion was a gift to the king of Sweden. When it died, he had it taxidermed.

[–]Mumbo774 0 points1 point ago

Apparently he was an Alice in Wonderland fan though.

[–]Busterdog14 0 points1 point ago

The first troll face

[–]hk403 0 points1 point ago

I'm not sure if this is cute or terrifying.

[–]Ezemryt 0 points1 point ago

And I'm going to have nightmares.

[–]DrizzX 0 points1 point ago

It has ninja turtle teeth.

[–]malvoliosf 0 points1 point ago

I prefer to believe that 16th-century Swedish lions were just awesome.

[–]heemster 0 points1 point ago

"Am I Right? Huh? Huh?"

[–]Zelai 0 points1 point ago

The longer you stare, the funnier it gets.

[–]dogboobes 0 points1 point ago

This is seriously the funniest thing I've ever seen.

[–]Ruxini 0 points1 point ago

Oh you!

[–]flytaggart1 0 points1 point ago

Thhhhhheeeeeeyyyyyrrrreeee ok

[–]PotatoDonki 0 points1 point ago

The future is titsed.

[–]cmiller1 0 points1 point ago

I love how nicely brushed down the mane is, like the guy thought "oh look at all of this lovely fur around the neck of this beast! such a pity they mussed it all up while killing the damn thing, I'll just fix that right up in a jiffy! brushbrushbrush"

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

You can't blame him, lions will probably be extinct by the 1600th century, after all it's 157,888 years in the future.

[–]catcard 0 points1 point ago

Looks like a creature straight out of the Madagascar series.

[–]noriyori201 0 points1 point ago

Can I have the time machine enabling you to go that far into the future?

[–]ccsmama 0 points1 point ago

Yes and someone else isn't familiar with how we count centuries...

[–]MJZMan 0 points1 point ago

I just came here to join in on all the "1600th century" mocking.

[–]SoggyCheez 0 points1 point ago

Someone is looking FABULOUS !

[–]groverwood 0 points1 point ago

future lion is derptastic

[–]flad 0 points1 point ago

Strangely he was familiar with the Banana Splits‽

[–]ConnorMayhew 0 points1 point ago

Fucking future lions, shit's crazy

[–]DesktopStruggle 0 points1 point ago

Christian here. You can't prove that lions didn't look like this back then.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points ago

1600th Century? so its from the future????

[–]Air_whig 0 points1 point ago

I don't think this painting is very important. I think the real thing that we should draw from this is how on earth did a painter in the 1600th century manage to send this back in time?

[–]baccus83 0 points1 point ago

Inbred Lion is the perfect sigil for the Lannisters.

[–]txking12 0 points1 point ago

damn 1600th century, pretty far into the future. maybe lions don't exist then and he went with his best guess

[–]baabsmacd 0 points1 point ago

I don't think the taxidermist was familiar with anything at this point.

[–]saintpattysmassacre 0 points1 point ago

Goddamn lions have evolved into creep ass puppets in 157,888 years? Got any insights in to tortoises? Tortoises are fucking awesome.

[–]EdMcMuffin -1 points0 points ago

Damn, lions are going to evolve to some weird looking animals all the way in the 1600th century.

[–]MONDARIZ -1 points0 points ago

Fucking Swedes man...boy i laughed so hard.

[–]controlfreak896 -2 points-1 points ago

You probably thought this lion was alive..... Nope. It's just me, overused mem- i mean, Chuck Testa

[–]Worthingtons_Law -1 points0 points ago

Nailed it

[–]avangoey -1 points0 points ago

Mother of god...

[–]viper9172 -1 points0 points ago

That thing is fucking horrifying

[–]Blue_Bi0hazard -1 points0 points ago

crack... not even once.

[–]RydotGuy -4 points-3 points ago

So much about this makes me angry. A)as already stated. REPOST B)again as already stated. 1600TH CENTURY..... are Chinese gold farmers taking over reddit now?

[–]T09B -2 points-1 points ago

This redditor was not familiar with time
