And it's still an inaccurate quotation, I'm afraid.

Google Translate is awesome.

From what I heard, one of the leaders (Kruschev I believe) said something along the lines of "Yuri Gagarin was in space, and he saw no god up there "

[–]ajaytech 8 points9 points ago

Yuri gagarin never said these words. Some person at an atheist convention or meeting ( a russian official, I think kruschev) said " Yuri gagarin went to space, and he didn't see god up there".

As all five of these other commenters said, this is a false quote. Downvote this to oblivion. As atheists of all people, we should require evidence for claims like this.

Still my all time most hated misattributed quote. Yuri Gagarin was very religious. Respect him and his beliefs for he probably would not like to be remembered as an atheist.

This is as bad as some historian writing of Christopher Hitchens and deeming him as a, "Pious Catholic priest".

still

So you are acknowledging that this is a tired repost, yet you still posted it.

(sees that it's THIS "quote")

It won't be for long.

[–]Weezyfb 1 point2 points ago

So what did he really say?

[–]ZankerH 2 points3 points ago

In a 2006 interview, Gagarin's friend Colonel Valentin Petrov stated that the cosmonaut never said such words, and that the quote originated from Nikita Khrushchev's speech at the plenum of the Central Committee of the CPSU about the state's anti-religion campaign, saying "Gagarin flew into space, but didn't see any god there."[18]

It was mine for a while.

This was the first thing that got me thinking about my (former) faith. I might not have considered Atheism otherwise.

No fucking kidding. Jesus.

"For the Sky is Hollow, and the Earth is Round."

Would love to see this wallpaper with perhaps a different (more accurate quote) appended to it. Besides the inaccuracy, it's beautiful. Reminds me of the r/atheism banner's background.

Gagarin was a member of the Russian Orthodox Church. :/

Not sure how much of this is true, but here is the story I heard: While touring the world after his flight, Yuri Gagarin visited with Kruschev (atheist leader of atheist nation, etc.), and when they were alone, Kruschev asked Gagarin, "Did you see god up there?", and Gagarin said, "Yes, I did." Kruschev answered, "I always knew it." Then Gagarin was visiting with a religious leader (Orthodox Patriarch?), who asked him (when they were alone), "Did you see god up there?", and Yuri Gagarin said, "No, I didn't." The patriarch said, "I always knew it."

Looks awesome on my linux mint. Thanks.

HOLY MOTHERFUCKING GODDAMN NUTSACK CUNTFLAP SHIT. STOP THIS. HOW THE FUCK DO YOU NOT KNOW HOW FALSE THIS IS BY NOW? YURI GAGARIN NEVER SAID THIS. YOU'RE SHITTING ON HIS MEMORY BY PUTTING WORDS IN HIS MOUTH. STOP NOW. ALL OF YOU.

Christians came up with this one, following it up with "Glenn Armstrong went into space, and saw god everywhere." Yuri was just a godless atheist who didn't want to see god, so he didn't. Glenn Armstrong was a patriotic American Christian whose opinion is obviously much more valid. Truth is, god was just out getting smokes when Yuri was up there, but he and Glenn had some beers. And he plays poker with the ISS guys every Thursday night. They'll be the first to tell you, you can't beat god at poker, even on a good night.

[–]Lysus 2 points3 points ago

Glenn Armstrong? Did you combine John Glenn and Neil Armstrong?

[–]mechanate 2 points3 points ago

Probably. Go alcohol.

[–]nvsbl 0 points1 point ago

YEAH ALCOHOL!

[–]ryn44 2 points3 points ago

Actually it was Khruschev, he was using space flight as a vessel to promote anti-theist ideology by falsely claiming Gagarin said he "Saw no god". Gagarin was Russian Orthodox
