Final Exam Steps

5 minutes before: Confident. "Fuck this test"

Getting the exam: A slight decrease in previous confidence based on weight and thickness of exam

5 minutes in: "What the fuck. What the fuck. What the fuck. Fuck this part I will just skip it and come back." Despite the first portion's difficulty, you are not deterred yet from the hopes of a high grade.

15 minutes in: Panic after you realized you have labeled every exam question as 'Skip this and come back'

45 minutes in: Anger. You can't really tell where to direct your anger; at yourself, the professor, or the chick who talked a lot in class who looks like she is doing just fine. But you are beyond upset as your realize your current situation. Having to sit in quiet anger only makes it worse.

1 hour in: Panic and anger have subsided into a calm sadness while doing your best to try to formulate an answer that shows at least some knowledge of the course. Imagine being down 50 in a basketball game with half of the game still left.

1 hour 20 min in: Sadness has been weirdly replaced by a strange confidence. A couple of your answers contain several phrases that were repeated throughout the course. "Maybe I will just pull this thing off"

1 hour 25 min in: Said confidence gone as you see multiple students happily turning in their test.

1 hour 45 min in: Finished the exam. You try to proof read your answers, but your anger/sadness returns as you read your answers.

1 hour 46 min in: Defeated, you turn in the exam. "Fuck this test"

10 days later you receive a email stating that the average was a 72. The curve results in you getting a B.

Dude, you have zeroes for a lot of those home works. Whatd you expect when you got to the exam? That you'd just be magically graced with the knowledge of half angle and double angle formulas?

[–]Windows_98 18 points19 points ago

Seriously, this kinda thing is a Sin. Did you really think that you'd get away with this just Cos you did some of the homeworks?

[–]brettyh 6 points7 points ago

Hey man, you can't blame the guy for wanting to work on his Tan over homework.

Hi, its you in 6 years...i just wanted to let you know that its not as bad as you think. You do end up finishing college, obviously it takes way longer than it should, but whatever...you got it done. You come to find out that nobody really gives a shit about your grades, or the fact that you have a degree at all. In fact, people with no education at all will go out of their way to tell you how little you know.

You're gonna begin to get a little more jaded when you see people not taking you as seriously as you would wish because of your lack of a work history. Then you come to a slow realization that your going to have to start at the ground floor no matter what job you take, so you go for the money and tie off a portion of your pride in the process. You wallow in your shitty job and its total unimportance to the rest of humanity, but fuck it, your getting by.

Then comes the good part, you actually start to feel good about yourself..you know why? Because all this time in the work force has afforded you the opportunity to meet plenty of people from every station in life. You realize that you are, for the most part, surrounded by complete and utter lunatics. Sure they come in every flavor; megalomaniacs, compulsive liars, thieves and everyday jackoffs. Every day is a comical gift of "what will come out of peoples mouth next"?

The feeling of having your head screwed on semi-straight is palpable and rewarding. Sounds like you got the right idea, just don't get too convinced that "fuck-up" is a permanent label.

Reddit (and college in general) has a weird way of making you think everyone works for a private space exploration firm, they don't. Just be a good person and try not to get too anxious about shit.

[–]haleighhouston 1 point2 points ago

thank you. really. i needed this.

[–]weskokigen 0 points1 point ago

Time for grad school.

[–]galith 2 points3 points ago

It's easier to give up and say I can't do this, I'm not smart, hard-working, disciplined etc. It takes much more willpower to pick yourself up after every failure and say I can do this. I can keep going. Throughout high school I was the typical redditor, didn't have to try hard and breezed through. A lot of it has to do with your way of thinking and reinforcement, if you think that you can't adapt and change, you won't and you'll keep failing. Part of it is viewing stress as an area of growth to overcome. If you've ever seen the lecture with Harard psychologist Shawn Achor, Harvard students when they first are accepted are elated that they even got in. After they start taking tests however, you quickly get stressed and many plunge into depression and wish they went to an easier school.

Last semester I had my first C in anatomy. It destroyed me. I thought maybe I'm not smart enough to do healthcare. Hell, I should give up now before I put someone in danger. I'm a phony I don't deserve to be in the same room as these people nor call myself a science major. I took a different anatomy sequence this past semester and got an A.

It's up to you, you can give up or you can continue onward.

Have you seen a therapist about those issues? It might also help you out. You might want to look into a personal coach to keep you on track with your assignments. Just having someone to report your assignments to on a regular basis is a godsend, at least fo)truggle with many of the same problems that you have in terms of parental interference (though yours is much worse.. Both of my parents went to Harvard and I'm not, just due to lack of motivation in high school. It's easy to feel overshadowed and stupid when compared to them. I wake up most days feeling like a complete failure, wondering what the point if even trying is. I also have severe OCD, so I sometimes end up washing my hands for hours instead of going to class.

Thing is, I know that I have the potential to do well. That's why my teachers pushed me into majoring in biochemistry, b@because they knew I could handle it. We have the gift of intellect, you and I, and we CAN use it if we just get the help that we need.

I'll tell you what. Why don't you send me a message when you get big assignments to do, and I'll message you back to remind you and motivate you. You can do this. We can do this.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]NietzscheIsMyCopilot 1 point2 points ago

Great. I have no doubt in my mind that you can get back on track.

[–]rtperson 3 points4 points ago

Um, have you tried just doing the damn homework? It's been known to help in your situation.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]rtperson 1 point2 points ago

The first thing I'd do in your shoes is get yourself to therapy. Go to your university's counseling center and tell someone there exactly what you said here. What you're describing sounds like clinical depression. You need a professional, not some random guy on the internet, to help you through that.

[–]HaHaBoom92 2 points3 points ago

Mediocrities everywhere...I absolve you

[–]poncho_dave 0 points1 point ago

Reading through your comments on this page, I really hope you're not making any of this up for recognition on the internet. I say this because this is how I felt/feel and I've never quite been able to express it in words like this. I'd enjoy talking more about it with you, but I suppose I'm not really sure what else there is to say besides...Hi, I have the same problems you do and you're not alone. I'm still searching for a way to understand myself and what's going on with me on top of trying to function like a normal person every day.

[–]anthereddit 9 points10 points ago

Trigonometry as in High School trigonometry or is there a much more complicated type of trig taught in college?

[–]Bernie_Roscoe 4 points5 points ago

100 level college courses, maybe? There really isn't that much more to geometry that wouldn't be best off taught in Calc I and II. And even that stuff is fairly basic.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]thesplendor 4 points5 points ago

You have potential. You can always learn/relearn maths.

[–]MakersOnTheRocks 0 points1 point ago

I've never seen a 100 level trig class in college. They're all "zero" level (0##).

[–]Bernie_Roscoe 1 point2 points ago

I've seen Algebra II 100 level classes in college and I believe that is what trig is usually included in. Perhaps they're broken apart?

I dunno, trig just seems so simple, but I may have a Dunning–Kruger thing going here

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]Bernie_Roscoe 0 points1 point ago

Just that trig is considered very, very simple by those of us who have had to take more advanced math classes.

Honestly though, I'm glad colleges teach it. I think trig is much more useful than various algebra and other lower 100 level alternatives. So if you only need one or two math classes for you gen ed requirement, I'm in favor of trig being an option.

[–]MakersOnTheRocks 0 points1 point ago

I guess it really depends on the school's organization system. I was just basing that statement on personal experience. I'd imagine that larger schools (like the one I went to) offer so many math classes they can't fit all of them into 100 levels so they classify the more basic ones into the zero level.

[–]catboogers 0 points1 point ago

I took a freshman level trig class at uni. For fun. I'd enjoyed my trig class in high school, and I had tested out of math requirements for my courses (not that I had many, as an English major). I still remember it as one of my most amusing classes. People would just look at me in awe after I would answer a question that had stumped them for ten minutes. I suck at anything more advanced than trig, but that class made me feel, very briefly, like a god.

[–]feureau 2 points3 points ago

Had the same curve thingy on my psych course.

Ended up driving cross country getting drunk and working manual labor.

I'm now a professional redditor... :(

[–]srg717 1 point2 points ago

I'm enrolled in 3 summer courses so I can graduate in 4 years and I decided a Religious Studies minor was pretty cool for no reason.

So, after my first "quiz" of the week and a 78% under my belt, I've got to say, I'm alllll for the going across the country and getting drunk.

[–]anthdx 0 points1 point ago

Thank you for giving hope to me.

Meh. As long as your overall GPA is good, a B isnt the end of the world.

[–]DonkeyTrain 16 points17 points ago

As long as you pass, GPA doesn't really mean shit.

[–]Five4Five 18 points19 points ago

Until you decide 10 years later you want to go to med school. Then GPA means lots of shits.

[–]DonkeyTrain 8 points9 points ago

As a doctor who went back to school, 2.5 gpa will be enough to get you into most med schools as long as you have other redeeming qualities.

And if you don't have a 2.5gpa in core undergrad science required classes to get into med school, then it's best you save your time and money. And it takes few shits to get a 2.5...

[–]Five4Five 3 points4 points ago

As a guy with a 2.85 trying to get in this go 'round, I hope you're right.

[–]DonkeyTrain 1 point2 points ago

I graduated with a guy who got in with a 2.55 overall, and I made it in with a 2.8 overall, but I did have a 3.4 in my core sciences.

Good luck to you man, they focus a great deal more on what you have done most recently as opposed to an overall which would have been effected by stuff took years ago.

Spend a great deal of time on your entrance essay, and have it reviewed professionally.

Good luck!

[–]Five4Five 0 points1 point ago

Thanks. Writing my personal statement will be big, but I think I can put something together that will compel. I have a trio of feedback machines that are premed advisors or professional writers, but I may look up a specialized reviewer. I've come back and carried a 4.0 and did well on my MCAT, all I can do now is find the right set of eyes to look at my file.

[–]Talvanen 0 points1 point ago

I'm a 24 year old guy. My dream is to become a PA or if I'm particularly ambitious, an MD or DO. I'm starting college in late August working toward my BS in biology.

I have interstitial cystitis and it makes my life pretty damn difficult. I know that it's going to affect my grades. I'm sort of freaking out because the whole reason I want to go into biology is to go to med school, and maintaining a 3.8+ gpa is going to be pretty hard when most of my daily life is spent going, "man, my bladder sure hurts like hell".

I have thought that maybe I could, I dunno, write an essay or something about overcoming challenges, and about how my medical condition gives me more empathy towards my future patients, you know? I sort of see overcoming IC as a redeeming quality in its own right. Would that be something that a review board might take into account when I apply to med school?

[–]DonkeyTrain 1 point2 points ago

Very much so. Acceptance review boards and committees take the essay submissions into consideration. I'll admit, requirements have gotten harder it seems over the last 10 years, but people with and without conditions are given considerations for their conditions of their lives and what led them to that school and to seek out a career in the medical profession.

My gpa was below the borderline, but I was given a chance because of my interview, essay, letters of recommendation, and that my gpa from my core sciences was substantially higher than my overall.

Something to consider too is that if you actually have the degree in a field, it looks better than those who simply to through the pre-req classes.

[–]Talvanen 0 points1 point ago

That's really good to know. I know I'm bright enough to pull off a 3.0+, but getting a 4.0 or nearly a 4.0 while getting extracurricular activities done, volunteering, working part time and dealing with my daily pain is probably not going to happen.

[–]Five4Five 1 point2 points ago

I'm no expert but I have been cruising around a great deal of med school websites. They all have something called "Technical Standards" or some variation of it that largely states you must be able to do the duties a physician would have to carry out from a physical standpoint. This includes vision, hearing and whatnot. If your condition keeps you from achieving the technical standards, then it's a problem. If it keeps you from being able to study, then it's a problem. However, overcoming an obstacle like yours and succeeding will put you in front of most other candidates in many screeners mind. I imagine.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]Talvanen 0 points1 point ago

Oh, I intend to give it my all no matter what. I really want to succeed in school, even if I don't make it to med school I want to at the very least have a four year degree in something.

I dropped out of high school and got my GED when I was sixteen. I spent a few years dicking around and working menial jobs, then developed my condition when I was 21. It took two years to diagnose and start treatment, and now I'm 23, almost 24 and living with my parents and starting college.

Out of the available majors, biology is the most intriguing to me. Even if I don't make it to med school, I could see myself being quite happy working in a lab somewhere.

Why do you have to go to Dartmouth? Unless you have some particular research interests at Dartmouth, any medical school will give you a fairly equal and uniform education.

[–]xHassassin 2 points3 points ago

For undergrad or grad?

I'm pretty sure published papers and research internships count a lot more than GPA when you're going to grad. Same with undergrad except it's not expected for you to have any.

[–]Five4Five 1 point2 points ago

My state's regents have a hard-and-fast rule that you must have a 3.0 to apply to any state medical school. This is why I'm not applying in state despite the fact my education would be 1/4 - 1/2 the cost. Feels bad man.

[–]DonkeyTrain 1 point2 points ago

And you have to go to Dartmouth because...???

If that's your goal then I would never say not to shoot for it. But please keep in mind, Dartmouth is NOT most medical schools, and there are many fine institutions out there that do not have the requirements they do. Quite a bit cheaper too.

End of the day, the same national boards are taken by all.

Good luck.

[–]Bernie_Roscoe 0 points1 point ago

that depends on your major.

[–]hurrrrrrrrrrr 0 points1 point ago

Seriously. No employer has ever asked for a transcript or anything. It's all about work experience.

[–]freebullets 0 points1 point ago

Unless you want to transfer from a 2 year to a 4 year university. Correct me if I'm wrong.

[–]DonkeyTrain 0 points1 point ago

If you're attending a 2 year program that has tie ins with state schools, your gpa isn't that paramount. However, if you want to transfer out of state, or into graduate programs, it does matter more.

[–]freebullets 0 points1 point ago

What do you mean by "tie-ins"? One of my local universities has a program where you shell out a couple thousand not including tution to go to a tech college for a couple years then have guaranteed admission to that university (if you keep the required GPA). There's also articulation agreements between the tech colleges and universities.

[–]DonkeyTrain 0 points1 point ago

Those are what tie ins are. Agreements between state universities and community colleges or junior colleges that allow transfer of credits and admission acceptance based upon certain criteria or completion of certain courses. I'm sure it's different from state to state, but what you described is what I'm talking about, except that I've never heard of the excess additional payout just to gain acceptance...that's against the law in some states.

[–]freebullets 0 points1 point ago

http://www.clemson.edu/admissions/bridge/index.html

Bridge participants pay the Bridge program fee, housing fee, and TCTC tuition and fees.

Program fee

The program fee covers academic success programs, health care services, orientation, campus recreation and student activities provided by Clemson and TCTC, as well as program administration and facilities costs. The program fee is $2,615 ($1,465 in the fall semester and $1,150 in the spring semester).

Also, it's actually one year, not two.

[–]Tillhony 4 points5 points ago

This is exactly how it happens.

NOOOOOO

Biochemistry is awesome. Biochemistry class is what sucks...

[–]KrishnaS124 0 points1 point ago

i can't speak for the class, but I got a full tour of Genzyme (biochemical company) and that shits awesome. I would never work there because fuck organic chemistry, but it was still interesting

chromotography man. its all about the chromatography

I wish they didn't euthanize the goats after bleeding them for antibodies :/

[–]bluepheonixia 4 points5 points ago

Orgo wasn't as bad as everyone said it was. It wasn't that easy to do, but it wasn't that hard either. If you kept up on the studying and knowing your reactions and stuff then for the most part it wasn't too bad, though some questions still make me make ಠ_ಠ this face

[–]aznscourge 0 points1 point ago

org 1,2, and 3 has been my easiest classes at university....the fuck am i taking?

[–]KrishnaS124 -1 points0 points ago

well i'm in AP chem currently (thank god only for 1 more month), and we have minimal exposure to orgo chem. in fact my professor said for the AP exam just get the orgo questions wrong because there were only a couple and we didnt have time to go over it. So i tried to look it over by myself.

[–]SuicideKing 2 points3 points ago

i always thought it was ochm. Biochem was pretty easy for the most part.

[–]silentl3ob 0 points1 point ago

I hate O-Chem :(

[–]adamsworstnightmare 0 points1 point ago

What's the difference between o-chem and biochem

[–]ixos 2 points3 points ago

Biochem is applied organic chemistry. It's the next level up, where all the minute details from organic congeal into systems and their associated reaction pathways.

[–]dreamingofjellyfish 1 point2 points ago

My biochem was not that much orgo. Some, but a basic understanding of interactions interact came up way more than the specific reaction mechanisms from orgo. It did have a fair bit of Gen Chem II though - if I never have to deal with reaction kinetics again I can't say I'll be sorry.

[–]ixos 1 point2 points ago

Kinetics was a great chapter.. I might be a little slow on a few points of michaelis-menten, but I'll pick them up quickly enough.

I looked at it as applied organic to get through it - it made more sense that way: Organic molecules make up the peptides which make up the proteins, which are molecular machines that do stuff to other organic molecules..

My professor is a bio-organic chemist and I work in an organic lab, so that's probably got something to do with how I viewed it. It's given me a solid appreciation for the work that goes into the flow of the central dogma of biology. The elegance of some of these metabolic processes are amazing.

[–]SuicideKing 1 point2 points ago

Ochem you learn how molecules interact with each other and how to make them through their properties, for the most part they are pretty small. Heavily focused more on chemistry. Biochem deals with the larger systems, like how we break down bread into sugar, and how we use that as energy, the molecules there are quite large, and many enzymes are involved. As you can imagine this will feel like Bio 101 again, as it's more memorization than ochem. Whereas in ochem it feels more like math, you have to work out the problems to pass the class (I actually failed a few times in ochem because I was too damn lazy, but I finally opened the book and got an A).

[–]adamsworstnightmare 0 points1 point ago

Thank you, ochem did feel like math and it sucked but I'm glad to hear biochem is memorization I'm all over that.

[–]smalleyes 7 points8 points ago

In every test that I have ever taken whether or not I did good or bad I always came out of it thinking 'if I would've studied harder I could've Aced this test'. It was ALWAYS a matter of how much I studied.

Biochemistry though..BIOCHEMISTRY though...was a different story. After coming out of midterms and finals each term for three terms I never felt so inadequate. I never came out of those tests thinking 'If I studied more I could've done better'. Those were probably the three hardest 400 level classes I had ever taken in my life.

I don't know why people complained about organic chemistry. Ochem is like blinking compared to biochem.

[–]Nether_Limbs 3 points4 points ago

This. I literally said after my final: "If I had studied for this for years, I still wouldn't really be ready."

There is just no end to the material, and you never really know the whole pathway or its implications.

[–]sekai-31 8 points9 points ago

[–]sc4s2cg 0 points1 point ago

Hi, original OP here.

I thought it was the perfect length. The exam itself took the entire 2.5 hours to "finish", it was just question after question after question.

[–]speenatch 0 points1 point ago

I know that feel, bro. My Bio final last year - 200 multiple choice, 3 hours.

[–]marry_me_sarah_palin 4 points5 points ago

Around 10 minutes into the first exam in a college calculus course I took, some guy stood up, crumpled up the exam walked to the door and slam dunked the exam into the trash can next to the door. Never saw him again.

[–]Brwnman 3 points4 points ago

Me too, I ended up getting a B thought so perhaps I overreacted. Good luck to you. I hope you got an A.

Not sure, it's pretty open ended. I'm graduating with a pretty good idea of Chemistry, Biotech (my dissertation was on DNA modification), Biomed and Biochem stuff. I think I didn't quite want to specialize too much when I started the degree, so I could figure out what elements I enjoyed about the subject.

Turns out I like everything except exams. Fuck exams. Therefore I've been conditionally accepted onto a PhD straight from my BSc next year if I get a 2:1. Which I won't because fuck exams.

This is how I felt in my AP World History exam today. You should see the bullshit I slapped onto the last essay.

Three people cried during my biochem final... the prof felt that the ACS test was too easy so he also wrote his own cumulative final to accompany the ACS one :) Thank the flying spaghetti monster that it's over.

[–]reelbigfish0123 0 points1 point ago

My buddy tells a great story about a final exam in college where the test were distributed, and some dude leafs through it, stands up and yells, "FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU -walks to the emergency exit- UUUUUUU -kicks open the door - UUUUUU and finishes with the CKKKKK right before the door shut behind him.

TIL Snow White had some pretty sick animation for its time.

[–]ThJ 1 point2 points ago

The Walt Disney Company pretty much invented that type of animation with Snow White. It wasn't common for animators to take anatomical detail and perspective so seriously in 1937. Snow White was the first animated feature film produced in America, and the first animated feature film to be produced in full color. It was ahead of its time in every way. Disney was the Pixar of the era. Their techniques soon spread to other studios, and they ended up being copied by everyone else in the business, which is why Disney movies look so unremarkable today. It's like watching old sitcoms and find that they're not funny anymore, because everything in them has been done to death by sitcoms that came along later and copied all the jokes.

How I feel 5 minutes into any exam...

[–]SpecCRA 0 points1 point ago

Oh dear god, I have a biochemistry midterm in an hour and a half :(

[–]Kilgannon_TheCrowing 0 points1 point ago

This is exactly what I'm going to do on my Microecon final on Wednesday.

[–]consciousdear 0 points1 point ago

Laughed at first. Then remembered I barely passed chemistry and gotta commend you for having the guts to actually take biochemistry. So, have an upvote.

[–]PlNG 0 points1 point ago

Pity the aspect ratio is wrong, at least I think it's wrong.

[–]jakemg 0 points1 point ago

I hope you're a guy because that would make this a lot funnier.

[–]salsal24 0 points1 point ago

awww, poor you!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

I'm thinking about doing Biochemistry as a major. Can someone please reassure me that I made the right decision because this gif isn't helping.

[–]wx3 0 points1 point ago

Relatively pointless major unless you plan to do clinical medicine research or go to med school. You won't even encounter a biochem course until your 5th or 6th semester (at the earliest). It's your call though!

This is basically how I felt taking my AP Physics exam.

[–]lud1120 0 points1 point ago

Déjà vu...

[–]sakray 0 points1 point ago

I felt the exact same when I took the physics exam..

[–]MakingADumbPoint 0 points1 point ago

Expected Nigel Thornberry. Was disappointed.

[–]unbiasly 0 points1 point ago

My god I felt the same way with physiology. And orgo. Can't WAIT for biochem.

[–]gtipwnz 0 points1 point ago

Biochem wasn't all that bad. I had Bacterial Physiology prior to Biochem and that was just a much harder biochem, essentially.

[–]CEONeil 0 points1 point ago

Hey everyone! complaining about your final changes nothing! That is all.

[–]meisanelson 0 points1 point ago

Fuck your repost brah.

[–]eyedeasneverdie -3 points-2 points ago

Not to be rude, but are you mentally handicapped? Biochem was a joke.
