I call this YMCA syndrome. Nobody can resist singing along, no matter how much they claim to hate it.

[–]howlinatthemoon 11 points12 points ago

God damn, now you made that song haunt me again!

Young man, there's no need to feel down...

[–]rjchan 7 points8 points ago

I said young man, pick yourself off the ground

[–]chris24680 5 points6 points ago

I said, young man, 'cause you're in a new town

[–]3leggeddonkey 4 points5 points ago

There's no need. To. Be. Un-happy

[–]KajuKattri 4 points5 points ago

Young man, there's a place you can go

Is this real life? Or is this just fantasy?

Damnit! My faith in posters almost went up a few notches. I was convinced that you linked to the original creator. But you are the creator, aren't you?

Good shit, by the way.

[–]I_POTATO_PEOPLE -2 points-1 points ago

Oh fuck, seriously? But how do we interpret this? Is he a redditor, one of our own who has created something and ought to be supported in his endeavor? Or is he a foreigner in these lands? Is he an internet scumbad trawling the interwebs for ad-clicks?

CONFLICT.

[–]suddenly_ponies 2 points3 points ago

Not really. If they have good content, give them all the clicks. They deserve it.

[–]SpruceCaboose 1 point2 points ago

Generally, the reason this happens is a popular webcomic is posted to Reddit after being re-sourced to imgur.com. However, this is somewhat frowned upon by the community since webcomics make money via ad revenue from their pages that host the comics and rehosting it destroys that. Thus, some comic creators now make their comic, rehost it to imgur themselves (since Reddit's userbase can DDoS a site if it is a popular enough post and imgur has bandwidth), and post source in the comments. That way, their work is viewed through imgur by lots of people who like it and the people who want to go the extra mile and click through to the artist's site proper can find the link easily in the comments. Everyone wins.

Oh man, I totally agree with the comic, except that the song they use as an example ("Sexy and I know it") is one that I liked instantly upon hearing, and think of as clearly better than most pop radio music.

...Hear me out.

"Sexy and I know it" is obviously not a pinnacle of skilled musicianship in any sense, but then again, what is when it comes to stuff that gets played on the pop stations? The sort of electronic music that's popular now is the two guitars, bass and drum setup of our our age. You can do very interesting things with it of course, but the point is that you don't have to, you can just making middling pop music without a huge amount of skill. For middling pop music, apart from "catchiness" it comes down to lyrics.

Yes, I am actually claiming that "Sexy and I know it" has better lyrics than most pop songs.

The reason is that it is almost impossible to not have better lyrics than most pop songs. Modern pop has fixated on a few subjects that they see as "safe": how attracted the singer is to someone, how much the singer likes to party, how rich/famous the singer is, etc. The problem is, if you're not totally braindead, these subjects are boring now. But worse than boring, they're shallow. The lyrics of modern pop betray an incredibly dull and unhealthy view of the world, where these few topics are the only things that matter. It's almost excruciating to hear songs and think that people actually think like that.

So if you write a song about anything else you're off to a good start. What else does "Sexy and I know it" got going for it?

  • It's about male sexuality, but it's not essentially predatory.
  • It clearly has a sense of humor about itself.

I've seen a few reactions to the song. Some people don't seem to know that it's a joke. If this is you, you might be an idiot. If you understand the joke but don't think it's funny, that's perfectly okay. But in almost every case I'll take a song that's stupid and joking over a song that's stupid and serious.

[–]ohnoitsDEVO 7 points8 points ago

I love arguing that Sexy And I Know It is good on the grounds that it could be considered a motivational song about accepting who you are and casting off preconceptions of male sexuality, based on the looks of the members of the band, and the fact that one has a robot head. If you look at it as celebrating individuality and being comfortable with yourself wherever you are, it becomes way more likable.

Plus, "wiggle wiggle wiggle wiggle, yeah!" is just plain fun.

[–]Laslo_Jamf 10 points11 points ago

Yes, I am astounded when someone doesn't understand the humor of that song. LMFAO are not trying to be Bob Dylan.

[–]CiD7707 1 point2 points ago

This is what I've been trying to tell people. I'm not a huge fan of pop, but there are songs here and there that I find I actually do like. This is one of them. Though I do prefer this version by Big Head Todd to the original.

This kid also does a wicked kick ass version as well

[–]pungkow 0 points1 point ago

Thanks for explaining this clearly. I've always liked Sexy and I know it despite hating most pop. It's catchy like a pop song, but is so removed from most pop in other ways that it's actually tolerable. The fact that they're just being silly and clearly just there to have a good time really shows.

[–]ATownStomp 0 points1 point ago

Some people are disgusted that this behavior is rewarded, regardless of whether the song takes itself seriously.

[–]imahotdoglol 0 points1 point ago

It clearly has a sense of humor about itself.

When I saw the music video to the song my first thought was "They must have enjoyed making this song".

[–]PepeAndMrDuck -4 points-3 points ago

How do you know it's a joke?

[–]DukeEsquire 17 points18 points ago

Because their name is LMFAO.

[–]dvito 10 points11 points ago

I can't know for sure, but watching the video they made for the song, gives me the distinct feeling it is meant to be funny.

[–]ineffectiveprocedure 1 point2 points ago

One indication is that the lyrics are "Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle, wiggle, wiggle yeah, yeah".

LMFAO is a hipster parody of pop music, which is intended to make you realize how absurd pop music is. You might think of "Sexy and I know it" as a kind of Horatian satire (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Satire#Horatian_vs_Juvenalian) of vanity.

As is typical of hipster performance artists, the aim is to be just subtle enough that a significant portion of the audience won't pick up on it. This means their target audience is a slightly higher brow (though certainly not "high brow") and they're shooting to create a feeling of an inside joke among people who get it. This works to create a fan base, but it's a dangerous strategy to some degree, because people who take you seriously will either think you're the worst example of what you're parodying, or worse, imitate you without understanding it's a joke.

So take the lyrics "I got a passion in my pants and I ain't afraid to show it". What he's saying is that he is proud of his penis and he wants to show it to you.

This is basically the same joke behind the Bing Bong Bros video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z4iiyRv_NrQ) but instead of rubbing it in our faces (so to speak) they keep it small, so it might pass right under our noses (god, this analogy really got away from me).

Anyway, I've actually predicted this sort of "hipster parody" thing before: I thought Ke$ha was pulling this based on some of her live performances. But I'm willing to entertain the terrifying possibility that I'm wrong in that case.

But with LMFAO, the video makes it pretty clear: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wyx6JDQCslE&ob=av3e

Whenever that Nicki Minaj song about somebody being her doctor comes on, I always leave it on until after the part where she goes "I just want you to be da dawkTUH! I just want you to fawddah moy YUNG!".

[–]holger-danske 11 points12 points ago

I just want you to fawddah moy YUNG!

Listen closely next time... t's actually I just want you to fart on my arm

[–]letspopbottles 2 points3 points ago

i sincerely hope you get the chance to write Nicki Minaj's newest club banger, just so i can see how you spelled everything.

[–]ATownStomp 0 points1 point ago

It's difficult to not get angry when Nicki starts with that shit.

[–]homeboy5925 0 points1 point ago

i like the ass ass ass ass ass song only because the beat goes hard as fuck and "kiss my ass and my anus cuz im finally famous" is gross and hilarious

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points ago

'Here's my number! So call me maybe!'

'Girls, Girls, Girls they just can't say no!

'Somebody that you used to knowwww!'

'...everyday I'm shufflin'.'

'Labrinth, come in'

'Nobody knows what it means, but it's provocative!'

'Starships, were meant to flyyyyyyyy!'

Oh Radio 1, you have filled my mind with some vacuous lyrics. Vacuous, but great...

[–]cactuar44 6 points7 points ago

Yes... Exactly this... I am a metal girls to the core, never listen to that kind of radio station, and for some reason "wiggle wiggle wiggle" is all I hear in my damn head :( Then it's usually followed with a few shakes of the ass, and shame.

[–]TheBrainofBrian 19 points20 points ago

Personally, my stages are much shorter:
1. Avoidance: Don't turn on radio. Ever.
2. Contentedness: Use Phone/MP3 Player to listen to whatever you want.

[–]OtterBurger 26 points27 points ago

  1. Never leave your house, because otherwise you'd hear it in stores, bars, restaurants, other people's radios, etc.

  2. Brag about it on the Internet

[–]shibblywibbly 21 points22 points ago

Have I mentioned I don't even own a TV?

[–]IMoperator 15 points16 points ago

TV? I don't even have internet.

[–]Zeppelanoid 2 points3 points ago

I have the internet at home.

On vinyl.

[–]RumorsOFsurF 2 points3 points ago

So brave.

[–]red321red321 0 points1 point ago

these people are nuts. like my kooky college professor. the guy doesn't own a tv and does these weird philosophical sociological experiments on his twin kids with his wife and only lets them watch dvds of shitty shows. people are fucking nuts.

[–]TheBrainofBrian 0 points1 point ago

I see you've been reading my blog.

[–]RumorsOFsurF 0 points1 point ago

Or Pandora, Last.fm, or any other streaming source.

[–]nukefudge 1 point2 points ago

do not try to follow the stages - that's impossible. instead, only try to realize the truth: there are no stages.

[–]randyrules 1 point2 points ago

I happened to be listening to this song. You don't need to listen to the radio. There's good music elsewhere.

[–]TimesWasting 1 point2 points ago

I like Pop music :/ It's not my favorite genre but I've loved it way more nowadays than I did 5 years ago. I wish Reddit wasn't so "against the mainstream" and I know, I know "We're not against the mainstream, we're against things that suck."

[–]I_am_not_angry 2 points3 points ago

Hey.... my kids love that song ;)

[–]Anon1E1Mouse 1 point2 points ago

BEFORE YOU CAME INTO MY LIFE I MISSED YOU SO BAD. I MISSED YOU SO BAD, I MISSED YOU SO SO BAD. BEFORE YOU CAME INTO MY LIFE I MISSED YOU SO BAD, AND YOU SHOULD KNOW THAT: I MISSED YOU SO SO BAD.

[–]Ramsurrun 0 points1 point ago

[–]popmusicrehab 0 points1 point ago

I know exactly what you mean. Turns from a simple guilty pleasure into a full blown addiction.

[–]millionsofmonkeys 0 points1 point ago

I wish I could reach stage 5.

[–]freeloder11 0 points1 point ago

I work at Hastings, and I have to hear this song played on the PA about 3 times every shift. I now dance around with my co-workers and sing along with it. Mainly because I don't get to use the word 'wiggle' enough and this gives me an opportunity to

[–]Fridgeburn 0 points1 point ago

HEY I JUST MET YOU

[–]Vee_Vee 0 points1 point ago

What kind of retard continues to listen to it after stage 1?

[–]NO_FUCKING_IDEA 0 points1 point ago

Nope. Never make it past depressed.

[–]homeboy5925 0 points1 point ago

There's a reason why pop music is so "catchy" and this happens to you. It's the way your brain works. Catchy songs are songs that repeat the same thing over and over again in a rythmic pattern that you can easily remember. If you play something enough times to someone, eventually they will like it. This is because our brain ties music and memories together; if they spam a shitty song into your life, eventually you will be doing something fun while that song is on (usually clubbing or partying in some aspect). Now, after that, whenever you hear that song you will subconsciously think of that fun time and the song just became bearable. Pop music is not out to make good music; it's out to make addicting music. And they are really fucking good at it. You can listen to a pop tune 3 or 4 times and know all of the words. Can you do that for a Pink Floyd song?

[–]Sheepyhead 0 points1 point ago

[–]AutumnEmber 0 points1 point ago

After the anger stage anger mixes with everything. Angry bargaining "oh my fucking god I would rather cut off my fucking ears than listen to this" acceptance anger "wiggle fucking wiggle fucking wiggle yeah... I hate myself."

[–]Lolwutdafuq -5 points-4 points ago

NOPE!NOPE!NOPE!NOPE! Pandora Radio + Rammstein! Pop makes me suicidal...

[–]austin3i62 6 points7 points ago

Isn't Rammstein just German pop nowadays?

I don't know if shouting out a band who has these lyrics really builds much of a case against pop music:

You've got a pussy, I have a dick. So what's the problem? Let's do it quick. So take me now, before it's too late! Life's too short, so I can't wait! Take me now! Oh, don't you see? I can't get laid in Germany...

[–]Lolwutdafuq -3 points-2 points ago

Insert NO meme here They're industrial metal actually, I just wish they would put out another album already

[–]austin3i62 0 points1 point ago

Probably around the same time Tapeworm's album comes out.

[–]Lolwutdafuq 0 points1 point ago

When can that be expected? I'm a tad off on the details
