I make my own coffee because I got tired of paying $2 a cup at the joint downstairs. How people justify paying for Starbucks regularly is just beyond me.
$6/day * ~250 working days/year = ~$1500/year
[–]nahprahbrah 37 points38 points39 points 3 months ago
I don't know where you guys get $6 from. A latte and most drinks there will run you about half of that.
[–]Scorp63 48 points49 points50 points 3 months ago
Still too expensive for bean water.
[–]Nightmathzombie 18 points19 points20 points 3 months ago
You forgot the "Burnt" part.
[–]nahprahbrah 60 points61 points62 points 3 months ago
I guess. I work at starbucks and all in all I agree. People do spend way too much money there. The only person I know that can justify it is this guy named Jay. He's an older guy. Late 50s early 60s. He still works in construction. And after a 12 hour work day he comes in everyday around 5pm and orders a drink and takes it to his bedridden wife who hes been married to since they were 19. I really wish I had a picture of the guy. He's the most adorable looking old guy I've ever seen.

This story made me laugh, cry, and strangely... aroused at the same time. It's almost too good to be true.

Two bottles of water and a thing of oatmeal. Water and oatmeal, and they pay like 7 bucks for it.

[–]CoronelBuendia 8 points9 points10 points 3 months ago
As someone who really appreciates coffee (but doesn't totally understand the pricing) I mildly resent that. I usually brew at home, which over time averages about 50c a cup, but I think paying $3 or so for an excellent cappuccino or a different regional brew than what you have at home is totally reasonable. $5 for a mocha is a little harder to justify though.
[–]jsdavis 1 point2 points3 points 3 months ago*
They have to pay their employees and make a profit too. A mocha is more complex a drink compared to a cappuccino and thus they can charge increase their profit. They are in business to profit after all. While I have no idea about the prices at Starbucks, I can tell you that espresso is quite labor intensive to do correctly and the equipment is expensive too. A commercial espresso machine can easily cost over $10 thousand and the grinder can be a thousand or more. Even then, they need to calibrate everything like dialing in the grind size, tamp pressure, and timing so that the product comes out good. Too slow or fast or too coarse or fine and the shot is not good.
I think I read once that brewed coffee sometimes does not actually make money and sometimes is sold at small loss and that more complex drinks are where the money is at.
I have read that Ritual sells a $6-7 cup of coffee which they brew to order. I was speaking to a barista at a local coffee shop that's been around for maybe 2 or 3 years that only recently started to sell coffee and he said they settled on French press because it is far less labor intensive than a Hario V60 which they considered initially. They only brew to order so nothing is pre-made and if they went with a V60, it would not have been sustainable, in a business sense, until they got to about $6 and that would not sell well.
[–]Brym 3 points4 points5 points 3 months ago
Actually, a mocha is a simpler drink than a cappuccino. Mocha just requires you to toss a pump or two of chocolate into a latte. The Cap requires you to properly create foam and put the right amount in the drink. Preferably with a little leaf design in the foam.
[–]tealparadise 0 points1 point2 points 3 months ago
Additionally, some (most?) of us who frequent Starbucks don't actually pay their posted prices. There is about a 50 cent discount per drink using their gift cards (syrups are free), which you can buy online for about 20% off. Once you commit to them, it's also worth receiving their emails which often have notices about discounts or coupons (ex - recent google sale of 10$ gift cards for 5$) There's also free ones every 15 times, and on your birthday.
TL;DR I only pay about 60% of Starbucks' prices for their coffee and I think a lot of people do this.

With how many people regularly go to Starbucks each day, I think they'd survive if they lowered their prices a little.

Lol.
[–]eucalyptustree 3 points4 points5 points 3 months ago
If $1 coffee at a gas station does it for you, that's great. If you've ever had half-decent coffee, sometimes you want better than that.
Not that starbucks is top-notch, but it's better than a lot of places.
[–]scout-finch 1 point2 points3 points 3 months ago
I've had plenty of half decent coffee, but I still enjoy some gas station brew once in awhile. On my way to class, I often stop by Speedway for a weird little mix of coffee + various machine-blends they have going. It's fun to try a lot of different flavors (even if they aren't top notch quality) and for ~$1.25 for 20oz I really can't complain.
[–](ノಠ益ಠ)ノ彡┻━┻tj111 0 points1 point2 points 3 months ago
The gas station by me has way better coffee than Starbucks. I drink my coffee black, and Starbucks coffee always just tastes like old burnt diner coffee to me.
[–]AuxillaryPriest 0 points1 point2 points 3 months ago
Add ons
[–]xoiy 7 points8 points9 points 3 months ago
they probably get the biggest size (which at starbucks, is a trenta size, 31 fl. oz.) which is almost equivalent to a quart. you're basically paying for the milk since flavors and espresso are dirt cheap. not to mention taxes and the person behind the counter preparing it for you. so, yes. people can justify it that way. or they just plain don't care and have the money for it.
[–]Tacosburrito 9 points10 points11 points 3 months ago
You can't get any espresso drinks in a trenta.
[–]xoiy 1 point2 points3 points 3 months ago
you can't? i thought you could? then what can you get in them?
[–]figurines 3 points4 points5 points 3 months ago
tea or iced coffee.
[–]fuck_the_karma 0 points1 point2 points 3 months ago
I've never drank Starbucks. What the fuck is a trenta? 30 oz?
[–]fit4130 8 points9 points10 points 3 months ago
Exactly. If I go into a Starbucks I think I'd have a "I JUST WANT A LARGE GOD DAMN FARVA" moment with them.
[–]abom420 2 points3 points4 points 3 months ago
22 here, felt the same about eating out when I found out a pound of deli meat and a pound of cheese is cheaper then 1 meal out.
[–]Toribor 7 points8 points9 points 3 months ago
I don't need you to tell me how fucking good my coffee is, okay? I'm the one who buys it. I know how good it is. When Bonnie goes shopping she buys SHIT. I buy the gourmet expensive stuff because when I drink it I want to taste it. But you know what's on my mind right now? It AIN'T the coffee in my kitchen, it's the dead nigger in my garage.
[–]lawlshane 0 points1 point2 points 3 months ago
Damn Toribor, this is some gourmet shit!
[–]cruxix 2 points3 points4 points 3 months ago
I consider it my contribution to the the theater. How else are grad students going to make a living?
[–]asok0 1 point2 points3 points 3 months ago
Average price of a latte is more in the range of $4
*250 working days - 15 days of vacation - missing 3 latte days a month= 200
minus 200 * .50 for home brew = 100
= 700 per year
[–]ericchen 2 points3 points4 points 3 months ago
Honestly, most of us just simply don't care. $6/day isn't a terrible price to pay for a latte and a snack in the morning.
I hope you have a savings plan for retirement or for when you lose your job.
[–]ericchen 0 points1 point2 points 3 months ago
Retirement? That's still a good 40 years away. Although I suppose it's never too early to start planning. Savings isn't much of a problem though. I can still live as I do for about a year without income. That should cover any emergencies that might pop up (in case Europe decides to explode our economy or something).
You do make good points though. A $4 drink and $2 muffin probably isn't the most prudent way to spend your money if you don't have any. I'm looking at you, the lady in front of me in line yesterday who had her debit and credit cards denied ಠ_ಠ.
If you made a real effort at saving, retirement could be only 30-35 years away :)
[–]EOMIS 0 points1 point2 points 3 months ago*
How? By watching people waste their lives away worrying over 50 cents so they can have some money when they are old and decrepit. I'm drinking my $6 clover brewed Kona coffee every fucking day. Few things piss me off more than cheap people.
[–]CONSUMER_OF_WORLDS 0 points1 point2 points 3 months ago

[–]CoronelBuendia 0 points1 point2 points 3 months ago
I go to starbucks when I don't feel like being frugal, am not near one of my favorite local coffee-houses and have a sweet tooth. The white mocha is especially tasty, but it's basically a variation of hot chocolate with extra sugar and a little caffeine.
[–]missfrenchpress 0 points1 point2 points 3 months ago
I drink lattes a couple mornings a week, but definitely not from Starbucks.
[–]Dump-Truck 5 points6 points7 points 3 months ago
For reference this was a piece about comparing healthy foods and unhealthy foods and their costs. The context was that most people balk at buying fresh produce but buy a $6 latte every day. The "$6 latte" made me groan immediately because its so cliche and the hyperbolic price. I often read articles about how save money because I'm a cheapass and pretty much every one of them says to "stop buying $6 lattes every morning!" to save money. Followed by the arbitrary yearly cost calculation.
It fucking pisses me off now because I never started drinking the latte so I can't very well save money by stopping can I? I'm presumably concerned about the cost of my food so how could I have not figured this out on my own by now? Am I some kind of super idiot with no reasoning skills whatsoever? At first I gave them the benefit of the doubt, sure maybe some people haven't really thought about this because money wasn't a concern in better times. But I've seen the suggestion reiterated so many times by now in money saving articles that I now consider it an insult and lazy filler.
[–]Moloth 56 points57 points58 points 3 months ago
okay, lets go ahead and get this off your chest... NPR listeners are a bunch of Liberal, Progressive, limp-wristed, latte sipping, abortion-getting, arugula-munching, Vegan, flag-burning, intellectual turtle-neck wearing fag-enablers that hate freedom, guns and Jesus.

[–]egr4wig 13 points14 points15 points 3 months ago
They joke about how no one listens to their show, but seriously it has to be one my favorite podcasts I listen to. I would like to know their viewership or whatever the audio verbiage for that would be.
Why more people don't listen to NPR I cannot understand. On second thought... the couple of times a year when they (the local stations) have a funding drive could be one the main reasons.
[–]luft-waffle 8 points9 points10 points 3 months ago
yeah, it's typically intelligent stuff, but that's not what people look for on the radio (ie. when they're driving), they want music or some mindless chatter about which celebrity took a shit.
[–]GuyInARoom 4 points5 points6 points 3 months ago
I love podcasts but I can't get into NPR. I've tried listening to This American Life several times, and I generally find the content interesting, but the presentation is enough to turn me off. It's some combination of the music, the hosts' voices, and overall production that is just rubbing me the wrong way.
I really can't put my finger on it. I just hate the way NPR sounds.
[–]suddenlyreddit 0 points1 point2 points 3 months ago
The station I listen to combines NPR with American Public Media. You might like more of the shows on the latter. It's more news driven than quirky stories with pauses and sounds for radio. That being said, I like them both. You don't even like Morning Edition and All Things Considered?
[–]GuyInARoom 1 point2 points3 points 3 months ago
I sampled a few shows but I don't remember what all of them were - I do remember they all shared similar production qualities that bothered me in the same way. If the two you mentioned have a different presentation style I might enjoy them.

You know, it's always bugged me that NPR (and their TV equivalents) have this "reputation" as a liberal news source. I have NEVER heard someone more consistently fair and measured than guys like Neal Conan and Jim Lehrer.
To this day, the only time I've ever heard Neal Conan come close to losing objectivity was earlier this year when someone called in on a show about suicide, with parents of dead kids in the studio, to say that "he doesn't get all this stupid sympathy" because, and I quote, "they deserved to die because they were just weak people" etc. etc. etc.
... to which Conan calmly responds, "I'm afraid I'm going to have to end your call before I say something I would regret. Thank you for calling, Bill."
[–]Moloth 5 points6 points7 points 3 months ago
Neal Conan is pretty much a boss of professionalism. He asks hard questions that his guests may not want to be asked and ALWAYS calls B.S. on statements that are less than accurate.
I dont get a 'Liberal' vibe from NPR, either... that said, it seems that if something DOESNT have a FOXNews-type slant, people automatically think there's a liberal bias. Reality, as is well documented, has a liberal bias.
[–]Brym 0 points1 point2 points 3 months ago
There's no such thing as an unbiased media. If nothing else, you have to pick what stories to run in your limited amount of air time, and merely by selecting the stories you find to be the most "newsworthy" you've introduced a bias. Going along with that, a disproportionate number of journalists are liberal (there was a 2008 Pew survey on this). So the unconscious bias that these journalists introduce is more likely to be liberal than conservative.
That said, I think that NPR generally tries to be "unbiased." It's just a fool's errand.
[–]barnesandnobles 0 points1 point2 points 3 months ago
It a deliberate ploy by right-wing political groups to make their own version of events seem more palatable by comparison. It's quite ingenious when you think about it - sling mud at these other "biased" news sources and then advocate that your own is the only one that is fair. You end up with a group that buys everything you say hook, line, and sinker because everyone else is in on a quasi-conspiracy and therefore you avoid scrutiny yourself through misdirection. It's called moving the overton window and as you can see in that wiki article Glenn Beck even wrote a book about it.
[–]TimeZarg -1 points0 points1 point 3 months ago
Didn't you know? Reality has a liberal bias, so of COURSE right-wing nitwits are going bitch and moan about a news program that objectively reports it.
[–]wickedgentleman 4 points5 points6 points 3 months ago

[–]BuffaloBounce 7 points8 points9 points 3 months ago
Seriously! And personally, I have no problem cooking healthy on the cheap. I can shop the perimeter of my local Mexican grocery and buy a weeks worth of groceries for less than $30. The catch is that you have to be proficient at cooking. Healthy food is only expensive if you're buying for convenience. If you prepare your meals from scratch it's outrageously cheap.
[–]tealparadise 2 points3 points4 points 3 months ago
This is true only in places with decent/cheap grocers. IMO there are 4 categories of place:
Has normal, cheap, and expensive (urban sprawl areas w/mixed population) Has normal and expensive (white suburbia) Has normal or slightly expensive due to scarcity (boondocks) Has no supermarkets (inner city- detroit)
All of these types of areas exist in the US, and it's not useful to discount them in order to make the argument that people are just too moronic to cook healthy food.

I had a Moka pot, but the brew tasted like black death to me and I didn't have time to experiment with it. Aeropress all the way.

As a manager at a newly opened Starbucks, I can tell you the espresso machines are about 26000$ a piece, we have two, so already we have put out more than 50000$ for espresso machines that almost ALWAYS gives a great shot of espresso. I also personally own a grinder and small espresso machine at home, both combined cost me about 2000$, and I have to say, the Starbucks machines are much better, perfect shots, excellent steam, can not be beat. I also think our prices are reasonable, yes, we/they want to be profitable, our cup of coffee is damn near the price of the shithouse coffee you get down at your local gas-n-go. And after tasting the great coffee Starbucks offers, I will never take a couple bucks to a gas station again.
Another thing to think about is, for alot of Starbucks customers, this is their treat, A daily dose of something to enjoy, I run a store in a place that is always going 24/7, half the people that come to us are on their way to work or leaving (at all hours). No one is forcing them to buy it, just like no one is forcing you to pay 3-7$ for the micro brew you go get when you hit the bar. Anymore it seems like if people aren't getting it for free they will bitch about the price, and even when you give it them for free they bitch anyway.,
people are always shocked when I correct them on the price of a small coffee at Starbucks.
[–]Slayergnome 1 point2 points3 points 3 months ago
Dude I don't really care about the price but have you seen the calories of a Latte??? It is insane I will stick to my coffee thank you.
[–]poopermacho 0 points1 point2 points 3 months ago
A latte is mostly cream and milk?!
[–]buildingbridges 1 point2 points3 points 3 months ago
Is this a pledge drive thing? Our radio station has stopped trying to guilt us about the coffee and started playing the hilarious clips of Alec Baldwin trying to talk us out of donating. Now if you excuse me, I am going to wait by the mailbox for the coffee cup I got for donating so I can feel better about not using a paper cup for my $6 latte :)
I don't understand the daily latte either. I work at a coffee shop and we have amazing coffee for around $2 and tea for the same price. We then have unflavored lattes, cappuccinos (actual cappuccinos) for around $3. our largest sweetest lattes cost $5 and people get them multiple times a day. I don't get it!
[–]Back2BagDad 1 point2 points3 points 3 months ago
You can get coffee from some Starbucks for 0.55 cents as a refill, if you have a plastic Starbucks travel cup. I do it all the time, and it's awesome, if I forget to make coffee in the morning.
[–]brad153 1 point2 points3 points 3 months ago
I drink black coffee and I honestly prefer to make my own coffee. It tastes a lot better than black coffee from places such as starbucks.
[–]yossarian_dies 0 points1 point2 points 3 months ago
I completely agree with this statement.
[–]jonlucc 1 point2 points3 points 3 months ago
According to my local station, the median NPR listener annual income is about $30000 higher than the national median. Plus, I'm dragging that number down, so there are some rich listeners.
[–]don_jon 1 point2 points3 points 3 months ago
Sometimes i feel like im the only 20 something year old working class person listening to NPR. Pretty mind blowing and rational programing though. Love it!
[–]Muscles_McGeee[S] 0 points1 point2 points 3 months ago
I know. I am 20 something too and it is funny whenever my wife and I get into the car and the radio starts playing opera because I was listening to All Things Considered earlier. The news feels fresh next to the 24 hour channels, never taking cheap shots. I do get a little bored sometimes with their choice of topics, but that is okay.
Let's not forget Wait Wait... Don't Tell Me? What a great show..
[–]don_jon 0 points1 point2 points 3 months ago
Ha! I fell ya, whenever my friends get in my car they're like, wth are you listening to!? Wait wait dont tell me is by far my fav radio show, i'm pretty good at it too, especially when it comes to the limericks.
[–]PoshHammer 0 points1 point2 points 3 months ago
Is £2.50 ok?
[–]juurr1 0 points1 point2 points 3 months ago
car talk!
[–]namer98 0 points1 point2 points 3 months ago
Espresso maker as a wedding gift. I don't drink coffee, but I have worked as a barrista. My wife likes it when I can make a latte for around 90 cents.
[–]forloveofscience 0 points1 point2 points 3 months ago
Man, I'm pretty sure coffee shops are the only places hiring in my town. I stop buying coffee, our economy goes under.
(Actually I don't buy coffee that often; just occasionally as a treat on pay day or something.)

[–]capacitors 0 points1 point2 points 3 months ago
$12 at Costco = a few weeks of good coffee. It's not that hard to make it yourself.
[–]grimebox 0 points1 point2 points 3 months ago
What's NPR?
[–]YSSMAN 1 point2 points3 points 3 months ago
That is National Public Radio, a national, non-partisan news source that is publicly funded through listener contributions and a very small amount of government funding for some content. Depending on where you are in the country, content can very greatly. Although NPR has a wide variety of their own programming, they also feature content from the BBC, PRI and several other public programming operations.
[–]kallexander 0 points1 point2 points 3 months ago
It's funny that people think these sugar-filled chocolate cream milkshakes are anything like coffee.
I am suffering from obesity!!!!!!!!!!!!
[–]blagasaurousbexxx 0 points1 point2 points 3 months ago
Yes. I work at Starbucks, and yes. :(
[–]TokinAg08 0 points1 point2 points 3 months ago
You're ALL missing the point! We're not buying enough vegetables and it's because we don't realize how cost effective they actually are. May God have mercy on our souls.
[–]waterbottlefromhell 0 points1 point2 points 3 months ago
Former DC resident here. This Starbucks is 2 blocks from NPR HQ and on the way when coming from the metro. Might have something to do with all the latte talk lol.
[–]MutedBlue 0 points1 point2 points 3 months ago
LOL, that is hilarious. I heard that same program in the AM as well, how produce can be cheap too, however if I need a pick me up, 50 cent vending machine mocha it is!
[–]whydoyoulook 0 points1 point2 points 3 months ago
I hate the taste of coffee. So no, you're not the only one.
[–]csleigh8 0 points1 point2 points 3 months ago
do they really cost $6 now? i only drink the coffee i make. hell, i was at caesars in vegas and a regular drip coffee was $4. i nearly dropped dead.
[–]albatrossnecklassftw 0 points1 point2 points 3 months ago
Am I the only person that doesn't drink coffee because it makes me extremely tired?
[–]s0brien 0 points1 point2 points 3 months ago
How did this go in the direction of coffee and not making fun of NPR fundraising campaigns?
[–]scout-finch 0 points1 point2 points 3 months ago
Mine only costs ~$4, and I only get one a couple times per week.
[–]BioSim00 0 points1 point2 points 3 months ago
I only go to Starbucks when I feel like reading and people watching. It's a good place to meet women as well. I can actually hold a conversation rather than trying to yell over shitty music. At least at Starbucks they keep the shitty music volume at a reasonable level.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 3 months ago
I would join you in making fun of them, but I habitually spend about 5 bucks on Red Bull every morning. Gets me pumped up about my day.
This is probably killing me.
[–]BestBlkKidEver 0 points1 point2 points 3 months ago
$1.61 every morning before school at the local gas station
[–]Nightmathzombie 2 points3 points4 points 3 months ago
I hate you. You should have gone to Timmy's, something I no longer have the luxury of doing anymore.
[–]yoshimirobot 0 points1 point2 points 3 months ago
Tim Hortons makes lattes now. They are the WORST.
[–]ericchen 1 point2 points3 points 3 months ago
I would imagine that anything made with instant espresso powder will taste like shit.
[–]Nightmathzombie 0 points1 point2 points 3 months ago
Oh the HUMANITY!!!! I haven't been to a Timmy's in years but it's sad to see them sell their soul to the marketing department.
[–]hiver 1 point2 points3 points 3 months ago
I had an iced mocha, light ice, no whip. Cost about $6. I need to a thermos so I can knock this shit off.
[–]Muscles_McGeee[S] 4 points5 points6 points 3 months ago
I understand and agree $6 is more than normal, but I did hear a guy on NPR this morning say that he spends $6 on latte in the morning. That's why I chose that number, I think. Maybe he is spending his money in classy New York coffee bars.
[–]kineo 2 points3 points4 points 3 months ago
I listen to NPR daily on the way to and from work. I make my own Folgers in the morning and it's tasty. If I am in a rush I'll hit Dunkin' Donuts for an iced coffee for under $3.

[–]youXman 3 points4 points5 points 3 months ago
So it was one guy, somewhere. Cool story.
[–]cliveam -1 points0 points1 point 3 months ago
6$ is totally rediculus for a latte, I buy coffe fairly regularly and have never spent more than 3$ on a drink. Regularly pay less than 2$ but hey some people just have to much money I guess.
[–]Whenthenighthascome -1 points0 points1 point 3 months ago
Man this story is OLD.
[–]suckthisdeth -1 points0 points1 point 3 months ago
how can you see what people on the radio drink?
[–]NummerVier -1 points0 points1 point 3 months ago
Yes, clearly you're not in the business world.
[–]Locke57 -1 points0 points1 point 3 months ago
3 dollar can of red bull or monster nearly every day for the past 3 years of college. I regret it so much but I am totally dependent on the caffeine and addicted to the taste.
[–]ocm1234 -1 points0 points1 point 3 months ago
I HATE this meme.
[–]JoeyJoeJoeJrShab -1 points0 points1 point 3 months ago
I don't like the flavor of coffee I don't like hot drinks I don't like spending money on things I could easily make myself for a fraction of the cost. (I don't know if a latte is complicated to make, but I'm sure I could figure out how to make a cup of coffee if I had a reason to do so.)
[–]fkya -5 points-4 points-3 points 3 months ago
Right now I'm stuck on the $2/day Monster Protean (15g protein energy drink) kick.Combined with a teaspoon of creatine and I'm good to go for the next 4 hours.
