Speaking as a European, and taking America's faults into account, I still can't deny that there is so much fucking awesome going on in that country.

And in his heart, so does Al Murray

[–]exelmans 6 points7 points ago

I feel like Al Murray is that guy you hang out with a few times and you can't decide whether you hate him or like him.

[–]binaryechoes 12 points13 points ago

Haha. Got a kick out of this. "Cause, you're dreamers! You know why we don't dream, cause we're awake."

Since most non-Americans haven't likely seen Kenny Powers, here is a clip of him introducing a new like of shoes from KSwiss since he is the MFCEO. It gives you a general idea of his personality and is funny in its own right.

[–]serpentjaguar 1 point2 points ago

My complaint is that so many Americans bash on their own country without having a sophisticated understanding of what they are talking about. While there is admittedly a great deal to dislike about the US, most issues are not black and white and cannot be framed in simplistic terms of good vs. evil. In the end, as of right now, hard though it may be to believe, the US is probably the most benevolent and least exploitative hegemonic power that the world has ever known. That fact does not in any way excuse US malfeasance, but it should give pause for thought. To paraphrase Bukowski, of all people, "before you go preaching hate horseshit in a public park, you sure as hell should have something better to replace what you'd have us tear down." The larger point being that if you like Reddit, you have to admit that it would not exist absent the hated US. By extension, if you like the world's major oceanic trading routes to be relatively free and open, you better thank first, the British Empire and the Royal Navy, and second, the US Navy that since WWII has taken over from the Brits in maintaining free and open shipping routes around the world. Everyone's life would be very different were this not the case.

[–]tigeress86 10 points11 points ago

So much truth. Non-Americans bash on Americans for a lot of the same reason I bash on fellow Americans.

[–]40kfreak 128 points129 points ago

That's different though, it's kinda like how you can pick on your sibling all damn day but if someone else does it it's your duty to beat them to death

"Sure, I've been called a xenophobe, but the truth is, I'm not. I honestly just feel that America is the best country and the other countries aren't as good. That used to be called patriotism."

[–]Mr_Pricklepants 16 points17 points ago

"In Dr. Johnson's famous dictionary, patriotism is defined as the last resort of a scoundrel. With all due respect to an enlightened but inferior lexicographer, I beg to submit it is the first."

[–]WilsonHanks 2 points3 points ago

Oshcar Wilde said that patriotism is a virtue for the vishhhus. -Sean Connery.

[–]fedja 12 points13 points ago

It's also most common among people who have never had a passport.

[–]Verb_Rogue 41 points42 points ago

Whenever I'm moving quickly through a crowded place, I do what Kenny Powers would do and yell "OUT OF MY WAY, I'M AN AMERICAN!"

[–]NOTTedMosby 56 points57 points ago

I've never felt more patriotic than when I see people hating on America on reddit. It's like someone else making fun of your little brother.

[–]exelmans 18 points19 points ago

Honestly I never really feel patriotic unless it's a foreigner hating on America. I enjoy hating on America, and I enjoy listening to arguments from Americans hating on America. But as soon as some fer'ner comes in here makin' fun of MY America, it's HURRAH FOR THE FLAG OF THE FREE, BITCH.

[–]JesteroftheApocalyps 13 points14 points ago

I was living in Cambodia when 9/11 happened, then the Gulf War. I was opposed to it from the beginning, I didn't agree with the Bush Administration, etc etc.

But when some French people started attacking Bush for what was going on, I couldn't help but tell them to fuck off, because fuck if I was going to let them talk shit about my country.

I've met Iranians, Russians, North Koreans, and Palestinians, and never did anything but respect and mutual understanding translate between us. I've only met people hostile to the US from Canada, Great Britain, and Western Europe. I guess familiarity breeds contempt.

[–]kilo4fun 3 points4 points ago

This is similar to how the Iranians feel about their country. They might complain about it amongst themselves but don't disbelieve they'd stand up for it if push came to shove.

[–]lemuffins 1 point2 points ago

Well said.

Foreign Redditors

What? Redditors who don't come from Redditland?

[–]chardrak 1 point2 points ago

Considering Reddit is an American site that is mostly visited by Americans, foreign applies.

[–]RivetingStuff 7 points8 points ago

You should know by now, AMERICA is the only country in the world and anyone not from AMERICA are foreigners to earth. I have an american friend who, when we first met, called me a dirty foreigner after she came to my country... and ate my Marmite.. fucking bitch.

[–]Iamthesmartest 67 points68 points ago

Wait, what are you saying? Does anyone know what this guy is saying? Look bro, if you're talking shit about America, we're gonna kick your ass.

[–]exelmans 5 points6 points ago

Sounds like some queer shit to me let's beat his ass!

[–]pew43 34 points35 points ago

I don't really know what you said, but I'm going to assume it was disrespectful.

[–]ivquatch 8 points9 points ago

Mr., I don't know some of the words what you used, but I likes what what you said.

[–]JorgeCS 15 points16 points ago

As an American, I gotta say you were way too polite in that comment. As someone from the internet, I gotta say, "lol wut?"

[–]Bloodysneeze 5 points6 points ago

You're like a white stag. Rare and beautiful.

[–]dfassna1 4 points5 points ago

For reals though, demonyms = names for people based on where they are from, so the demonym for people from America is "American".

I had to look this up. Does that make me stupid?

[–]Fly4Navy 23 points24 points ago

I have one reddit rule, Kenny powers always gets an up vote. Live by it

[–]_NDS 3 points4 points ago

wait...we're hated?

[–]mjc1027 7 points8 points ago

People, people...there is enough hate to go around for everyone. just chill the fuck out.

[–]wavefield 19 points20 points ago

Next time I visit the US and people ask me where I'm from, I'm just going to say "foreign"

[–]Wenfield42 27 points28 points ago

I hear foreign is a lovely country. It's no AMERICA, but still nice in a quaint way.

[–]goodguysteve 1 point2 points ago

They're so cultured over there.

[–]pm11 3 points4 points ago

I was totally expecting a gif of Homer Simpson flipping people off while sinking into that sinkhole.

[–]MovingPavements 43 points44 points ago

I hate it when Americans try to side with us Europeans when it comes to bashing America, I hope you self hating Americans all know we laugh at those who are willing to sell out their own kind. We're not your "Homies" and can you blame us for not wanting to be ? I personally love America cause the Chinese food there is fucking fantastic.

[–]breakfastman 35 points36 points ago

Upvote for Americanized Chinese food.

[–][deleted] 19 points20 points ago

This. I believe that all the self-hating Americans are children. It's totally pathetic. Grow up, kids. Hate your government, not your country. -American

[–]thatvoicewasreal 4 points5 points ago

And whatever you do, don't live outside of America if you want to keep your hatred for the place unblemished, and your conviction that everyone would choose to live in NW Europe, given a choice informed by experience, intact.

"Hey, I like you. You can come over to my house and fuck my sister." - R. Lee Ermey

[–]WalletPhoneKeys 7 points8 points ago

How can I ever love the marxo-theist plutocracy that stomps on constitutional human right to download Game of Thrones for free???

[–]goodguysteve 1 point2 points ago

An American hating on self-hating Americans.

Christ I'm confused.

[–]Volvaux 1 point2 points ago

That sounds like Hitler talk, Frenchy.

[–]jakeski 1 point2 points ago

We're not your "Homies"

Read this in the most pretentious generically Eurotrash accent in my head. Thank you for your tax dollars!

[–][deleted] 16 points17 points ago

USA,USA,USA!!!

[–]orzof 23 points24 points ago

I'm going to go out on a limb and assume that a lot of people outside of the U.S. have yet to see East bound and Down and probably aren't getting the joke.

[–]Traveshamockery27 75 points76 points ago

The fireworks, American flag cape, baseball uniform, and middle fingers are pretty much universal.

[–]RageDoll 10 points11 points ago

Yeah I got the message... Don't have any British films with that. Not that I can think of anyway.

[–]duce2231 26 points27 points ago

The fact that this scene takes place in Mexico makes the impact of the gif so much greater.

[–]wegotpancakes 6 points7 points ago

Whatever inside joke exists be damned. It pretty obviously works if you have seen it or not.

What is the inside joke anyway?

[–]addictedtomosh 4 points5 points ago

Outside the US here. East bound and Down is fucking awesome. Shame it finished now.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

[–]52hoova 10 points11 points ago

I was torn when I saw this. Kenny Powers is an America-loving badass, yet he wears the flag as a cape (a clear violation of the U.S. Flag Code). I want to believe it was an honest mistake... I do.

[–]Freikorp 1 point2 points ago

That's a huge point of his character. He's generally oblivious to most social norms or "rules" like the flag code, etc, even if it's something he seems to be passionate about.

[–]conman09 13 points14 points ago

Sure, I've been called a xenophobe, but the truth is, I'm not. I honestly just feel that America is the best country and the other countries aren't as good. That used to be called patriotism.

[–]WilmaDickfit 2 points3 points ago

I can feel that. All the way down in my plums

[–]vansc1aw 2 points3 points ago

Kenny Fuckin Powers!

[–]SOwED 2 points3 points ago

Seriously though, the UK hates on us, but at least we don't have people getting arrested for what they say on Facebook!

[–]tabret2004 2 points3 points ago

I'm not foreign, you're foreign!

[–]TheFingersHurt 2 points3 points ago

I always love how Americans refer to people outside the US as "foreigners".

Foreigners to what? The internet?! :P

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points ago

Oh, sorry, what was that? Sounds like you're jealous of my FREEDOM.

USA! USA! USA!

[–]lambdo 3 points4 points ago

"Kiss my ass and suck my dick... everybody"

[–]Zakk_Scar 11 points12 points ago

Geez, why is it America that gets all the hate when there are a bunch of other countries that have the same, if not worse, problems than us? What the fuck did America do that makes it the ass of every joke made by some stereotyping European who's probably never been to America?

[–]jillyboooty 24 points25 points ago

It used to bother me when Top Gear made fun of American cars and America in general. It stopped bothering me once I realized that we don't spend nearly as much of our time paying attention to them as they do to us. It's like my old high school rivalry. Our arch rival had no idea we were rivals and was too busy beating us at football.

[–]Eats_Beef_Steak 2 points3 points ago

It's tha damn Frenchies! Damn communist...mumble mumble

[–]WrethZ 3 points4 points ago

If an american president called their country the best in the world in front of an american crowd, they'd cheer.

Here in the UK, if the Prime Minister said Britain was the greatest place on earth, we'd all cringe and shake our heads in embarassment.

That's the difference.

[–]userSNOTWY 7 points8 points ago

You americans are fucking overly patriotic,i mean, whats up with the pledge of allegiance ?? Plus the thing that makes you irritating is that you believe 'muricah is the best country in the world. Well guess what, it isn't: you havent won a war since ww2 and there you only came in after germanies resources were depleting; you are a dumb nation (per capita); you have no history (only 200 yrs old); you believe you invented everything (you are the worlds 9gag), you are famous for bringing war around the world; you ARE a rich country but you spend it all on hypertechnological weaponry you don't really even need; you started a war on terrorism because 3000 people died (big deal, more people died fighting the terror than were killed by actual terrorists) etc etc this could go on.... EDIT: you are also the biggest supporters of lots of great dictatorships

[–]distractthepaladin 3 points4 points ago

I would say you've summed it up pretty well, except what you mistake for patriotism is the sheep-like behavior of millions of people who are mere workers and consumers instead of citizens. Any true American patriot should be appalled by the decline in American education in the past 50 or 60 years and the neocon irresponsibility that has replaced conservatism.

[–]mrlittlejeans 4 points5 points ago

you need a hug.

[–]Sepulchural 77 points78 points ago

I think there would be less hate toward Americans if we didn't make posts that clearly indicate we think the world is neatly divided into "Americans" and "foreign", heh heh...

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points ago

Well if you live in America then anything outside of America is indeed foreign.

[–]Todomanna 54 points55 points ago

The problem is that it's not a one way street. Someone makes a post about how Americans are dumb. So someone makes a counterpost about how Americans aren't dumb, they're awesome! So several people make counter counter posts that they are dumb, and they're smelly too. And it goes on like this. It's not a case of Americans needing to be less arrogant, it's a case of everyone needing to be less arrogant. Or at least be more capable of taking a joke.

[–]freddiefranks 26 points27 points ago

Get your sensible and tolerant insights out of my internet!

[–]countchocula1357 5 points6 points ago

"They are dumb, and they're smelly too." Its funny because scent is irrelevant. Also, the word smelly gets the giggles going.

[–]Bored_At_Night 11 points12 points ago

Its funny because scent is irrelevant.

So, clearly this guy has never been around hippies...

[–]Orhnry 1 point2 points ago

[–]Radialshifter 32 points33 points ago

The world IS neatly divided..... people from America are Americans, people outside are foreign to America... that's like THE definition of foreign.

[–]erythro 1 point2 points ago

that's like THE definition of foreign

Hey, stop taking our words, foreigner. Foreigner means "not british". Make up your own word, you do it often enough.

[–]webslingga 8 points9 points ago

False, the world is divided between "Americans" and "Commies".

[–]wilc8650 45 points46 points ago

Then don't collectively hate on America and we won't collectively call you foreign.

Deal?

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]Engineerforsuckers 5 points6 points ago

He probably is one of those dirty foreigners. Busted mother fucker!

[–]Radialshifter 6 points7 points ago

Except isn't that the definition of foreign?

[–]wilc8650 1 point2 points ago

Not in the way they are defining it.

[–]taibhse 15 points16 points ago

...I live in Ireland..I don't think I have ever called anything online "foreign".....when to be honest pretty much all of it is :p

[–]Mob_King 14 points15 points ago

Agreed - IMHO 'foreign' is a word used mostly by Americans and Asian cultures.

[–]Eternity42Immensity 14 points15 points ago

Hmm... When you look at it, the US is a pretty big country. Hell, Texas is only 1 state, and look at the length of this drive

I guess it easy to become isolated and suddenly foreign is relevant to you, when you are bordered by only 2 countries, and yours is big enough to never leave.

[–]Bored_At_Night 17 points18 points ago

It's a cultural thing more than a nationality thing. Europe has a culture of being intertwined. Small countries with a collective government do that. The US is largely independent culturally. Canada is close to the US, and most Americans view Canada like a back yard. Same thing translates to Asia. Isolationist views held for long periods of time created vastly different cultures and resulted in a strong "us" and "them".

[–]wegotpancakes 3 points4 points ago

Considering the US has many cities with larger populations than your entire country I don't see why this is a big deal.

[–]HE_WHO_STANDS_TO_POO 14 points15 points ago

He can't fit all of the other countries into the title, jeez. Laugh a little. I hope you don't get offended by me saying "other countries" too. I don't really feel like typing them all either.

[–]syntheticrhythm 3 points4 points ago

Only speaking for myself but it's not that I take offense. It's like having that one guy show up at a party; the one who shouts WHOOO, breaks stuff, and says broseff alot. You just roll your eyes and just wait for the asshole to pass out from enough shitty beer so you can wrap him up in saran wrap and leave him tied to a tree.

[–]Theo667 5 points6 points ago

I do believe it's spelled "Broseph," my good man.

[–]YNot1989 22 points23 points ago

Its an America-centric world. And I know this because anyone who responds to this is doing so on a piece of hardware that we invented, on a global communications system we also invented, in the language we exclusively use (along with our buddies in the UK and the rest of the Colonies).

[–]confusedjake 17 points18 points ago

We don't use english as exclusively as we used to. Also be more specific on the hardware because I am replying to you using a toaster.

[–]Volsunga 7 points8 points ago

We don't, but everywhere else does. Unless you live in a former French colony, every highly educated person is going to have English as a first choice in their second language.

[–]phoenix25 1 point2 points ago

language we exclusively use

Oh thank god this is a troll.

Please god let this be a troll

[–]BagOnuts 6 points7 points ago

If over half of the site's traffic didn't come from America, I'd agree with you. But it does. So get over it. MURICA!

[–]KosmoKorsair 4 points5 points ago

Listen here you beautiful bitch, I'm about to fuck you up with some truth!

[–]littleson912 1 point2 points ago

It's not just Americans engaging in this sort of thing. Seems like redditors from European countries usually generally refer to themselves as Europeans rather than the actual country they're from.

I guess it doesn't matter, just pointing out one of the double standards.

[–]unplanned_life 1 point2 points ago

Americans are generally pretty good at being specific about what country parts of the world other people are from. China is a different story. Even when they know what specific nationality someone is, they are still 'foreigner'. There is China and then everybody else.

[–]BrainSlurper 3 points4 points ago

Well, if you think about it, I think america is the majority on reddit, so everyone else is a minority. FUCK YOU MINORITIES THIS IS AMERICA!

USA USA USA!

[–]jeepdave 7 points8 points ago

I think the best part of being an American is we don't give a fuck what others think of us.

[–]bananagrabber83 5 points6 points ago

...as so amply demonstrated by all the Americans in this thread. I can hardly hear for all the fucks not being given in these hundreds of posts.

[–]CrimsonOmen 3 points4 points ago

Murica!

[–]swampy13 5 points6 points ago

This whole episode really made me say to myself "yeah, America is pretty fucking awesome. Sorry, rest of the world."

[–]Zeshakag 5 points6 points ago

The amount of people who are willing to announce their hatred of where they were born and devalue millions of their neighbors iust so they can avoid some criticism or trollish insults is kind of sad, no matter what country of origin.

Many of them are teachers, volunteer fire fighters, struggling parents, researchers, engineers, athletes, low wage workers. People who have busted their asses to get where they are in an attempt to make things better. Even the evil congressman worked long and hard to get there. Many are just like you. And you just fuckin sell them out. Not only that, but you go outta your way to announce that you are indeed from that country, but rest assured you hate everyone there so please, don't hate me!

One day you'll find out that maybe those people insulting you had misinformed, baseless opinions, and other times, they will hold a mirror to you and sharply expose your faults. Trust me, it's not that bad. You are not suddenly morally better than an entire country's population, and are not suddenly immune to these sometimes truthful and useful criticisms, just because you say you hate these people. In fact, denouncing your association with all these people out of fear of criticism makes you pathetic. I hope you who say these things are not yet adults but are in Junior high school, because that's the only place I've ever seen people so willing to bag on a group of people for the approval of strangers.

Thank you, "domestic" redditor for making clear that I'm a "foreign" redditor. Where do I apply for my green card?

I think most people don't hate America. They just hate the super patriotic sense of superiority and looking down on others that is an attitude some Americans have.

I know many Americans which I like. A former girlfriend of mine was American. I know smart, intelligent, liberal and even modest Americans. Wonderful people.

But then you get some Americans who come of very crass, arrogant and pretty stupid. and they tend to be loud. Very loud at shouting about how much better they are and how much better America is, and because they are so loud they tend to represent America far more than other Americans and this give a bad impression.

Any nations stereotype can be blown out of proportion and not really be truly representative. I know I have heard many Americans for example talk about things about the English which simply are either not true or blown up to the extreme.

Replace "America" and "Americans" with any other country and it holds true. Douchebaggery knows no borders.

[–]fireline12 25 points26 points ago

We tend to remember the people who make the most noise, and that goes for every country. Europe has just as many people with superiority complexes if you ask me, they just aren't as prominently displayed in the media.

[–]Sandmanifest 6 points7 points ago

and even modest

I giggled.

[–][deleted] 37 points38 points ago

Smart AND intelligent? Wow.

What about intelligent and conservative; do they not exist?

[–]XOLegato 9 points10 points ago

I think most people don't hate humans. They just hate the super patriotic sense of superiority and looking down on others that is an attitude some humans have.

I know many humans which I like. A former girlfriend of mine was human. I know smart, intelligent, liberal and even modest humans. Wonderful people.

But then you get some humans who come of very crass, arrogant and pretty stupid. and they tend to be loud. Very loud at shouting about how much better they are and how much better Earth is, and because they are so loud they tend to represent Earth far more than other humans and this give a bad impression.

Any planet's stereotype can be blown out of proportion and not really be truly representative. I know I have heard many humans for example talk about things about the Martians which simply are either not true or blown up to the extreme.

I think most people don't hate blacks. They just hate the sense of superiority and looking down on others that is an attitude some blacks have.

I know many blacks which I like. A former girlfriend of mine was black. I know smart, intelligent, liberal and even modest blacks. Wonderful people.

Any racial stereotype can be blown out of proportion and not really be truly representative. I know I have heard many blacks for example talk about things about whites which simply are either not true or blown up to the extreme.

The US definitely didn't invent nationalism or corner the market on it. Europe has a long tradition of it as well that ended up causing a little war a few decades back. Just like then, not everyone in the US is some nationalistic loon. On reddit, it's more of the opposite with self-hating Americans trying to give credence to the stereotypes placed on us.

[–]Footballvike81 10 points11 points ago

Not to be a dick but you sound like an arrogant dick.

[–]yamyamyamyam 8 points9 points ago

Honestly, the vast majority of Americans I meet are incredibly welcoming and hospitable. I like Americans and there are lots of things that I like about America. Every country has its nutcases and such. That being said, OP's post is pretty pathetic if meant literally.

[–]amadea56 3 points4 points ago

It's funny because this is set in Mexico..

[–]40kfreak 6 points7 points ago

Well...theyll all be Americans soon enough

[–]Typical_Whiteboy 2 points3 points ago
