I've gotta admit, I let loose an AWWWW for this one.

[–]glemnar 27 points28 points ago

For reference...That hedgehog is actually not happy about that berry being there, hence he is curled up. He isn't hugging the berry.

Edit: I need to piss off animals for karma

[–]eboshi 27 points28 points ago

I'm a hedgie owner too, this little guy looks so unhappy :(

Maybe I need to shove fruit at daisy, I could use the karma

Edit: shoved a flower at her instead

[–]gambit87 2 points3 points ago

Karma for you good sir

[–]Geerat5 0 points1 point ago

Thanks! Downvoted the berry asshole and gave my upvote to you and your pretty squirrel(:

[–]bennycoco1233 0 points1 point ago

[–]Nitro_Hedgehog 0 points1 point ago

or he could be sleepy, mine looks like that until some time passes and he sprawls open at some point and climbs on me

[–]Dandrift89 -1 points0 points ago

I agree . My hedgehog would not be happy curled up with a berry on his face .

[–]TheMadMule 27 points28 points ago

That was a fart. Trust me, I'm the guy sitting next to you in the library right now.

[–]P2D_ItsME 16 points17 points ago

You need to get out (of reddit) more.

[–]Jaccington 5 points6 points ago

At half past midnight, listening to charlie chaplin's speech at the end of the Great Dictator re-enacted by the TF2 medic then seeing this and letting out the manly squeal of delight only a hedgehog bearing a raspberry can bringforth, I realized...I should go to bed.

[–]ragebird3 2 points3 points ago

Excuse my ignorance, but why are they illegal?

[–]Jaccington 7 points8 points ago

I'm not if I'm too tired to understand this or you're trying to confuse me or...my brain is broken

[–]ragebird3 3 points4 points ago

That awkward moment when you reply to the wrong comment... That was meant for the person who said that hedgehogs were illegal in Pennsylvania. Oops. Sorry... Here, have an upvote. Time for take two...

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points ago

...that's not really awkward. It's called a mistake.

[–]ragebird3 0 points1 point ago

Because mistakes are never akward.

[–]Teds101 2 points3 points ago

I think it's because they've just barely been taken in as pets and they aren't fully domesticated yet. They're still considered wild.

[–]PeaInAPod 2 points3 points ago

They are only illegal in some states. It mainly has to do with them being a non-native species to the area.

[–]Neverouttoday 0 points1 point ago

I also have a theory that could become an invasive species.

[–]certel 15 points16 points ago

[–]AffeKonig -2 points-1 points ago

I've had this picture in my phone for at least six months; makes sense.

[–]gabruka 1 point2 points ago

He's enjoying that raspberry so much it makes me want to have one. This should be an ad.

[–]fapeture 1 point2 points ago

What an adorable ball of ouch.

[–]OH_GOD_I_JUST_JIZZED 4 points5 points ago

This smells of repost.

[–]HancockTheApp 2 points3 points ago

Do hedgehogs make good pets?

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points ago

Yes, but they required a very specialized living environment and diet. It takes lots of time, research, and initial investment to have a happy and healthy hedgehog.

[–]dingdongrb 0 points1 point ago

Much like having any fucking pet.

What annoys me is when someone brings home that cute little puppy and takes great care of it whilst playing with it for hours on end. But when it grows up it's connected to a chain in the backyard and it's only contact is when someone takes the daily food and water to it.

[–]Todamont 0 points1 point ago

Can you tell me a little more about what makes a good environment for a hedgehog?

[–]sanshiki 6 points7 points ago

I agree with elisepiece, i put in half a year to about a year of research and saving money to get my own pet hedgehog! :)

i used to own a hedgehog, and let me tell you, they poop. A LOT. If you want a pet that responds to you and listens to you and be a good companion, a hedgehog is not what you want. A dog does a better job at that. Cat too! Dogs could give a ton of fuck to you, while cats will give you a little fuck, while the hedgehog just gives zero fucks. He's one badass little motherfucker.

When i first got my hedgehog, i would have girls swarming over me and saying AWWWW IT'S SO CUTE! but then the cuteness died off after a while, and those girls didn't seem to bother with my hedgehog anymore. BUT, i still loved him nonetheless!

Answering your question: Temperature of 65~85 Fahrenheit, high quality cat food for diet, the occasional mealworm as a treat which is also important to it's diet, a running wheel inside the cage to keep in shape, so it doesn't get TOO fat. Clean environment obviously, large walking space (larger than the average hamster cage i guess).. water.. and that's it i guess!

[–]TaintedTulip 1 point2 points ago

Having fostered a baby girl (whose momma got squished near my house) until she was big enough to be released, I can safely agree that they give zero fucks about anything and poop more than you can possibly imagine. Very cool wee personalities, but they are not a low maintenance pet.

Noisy as hell at night, had to clean her cage every morning as she would rearrange EVERYTHING (admittedly this could have been because she needed a bigger space and more stimulation; being a temporary guest she didn't get a decent sized permanent setup), and while I got lucky and she was pretty friendly (albeit obstinate as fuck) even though I tried to keep her socialization at a minimum so she would adjust to the wild ok, many hedgehogs will be grumpy and unsociable for the most part, and you have to get lucky as you can't usually train this out of them. Just something to keep in mind when considering hedgehogs.

[–]HedgehogFan 0 points1 point ago

The wild hedgehog you dealt with is quite different from the pet hedgehog in the picture, which is a breed that doesn't even exist in the wild, and the result of captive breeding of a cross of two African species for over 20 years.

[–]TaintedTulip 0 points1 point ago

Oh, sure, I'm well aware of that, but I also did a HELL of a lot of research into care and socialisation of both wild and domesticated hedgies when I was getting myself set up to care for her, and that seemed to be the common opinion I came across :)

[–]rawr0401 0 points1 point ago

They have a shitton of personality too. I mean it totally depends on the one you get. Like mine for example hates almost everyone and it took a while for her to get used to me, but everyone who ever tries to hold her always gets quilled or bitten. She even charged one of my friends once with her quills sticking out. But she is nice and awesome and one of the best pets ive ever had even though she does poop ALOT.

[–]sanshiki 0 points1 point ago

Agreed. They do have a shit ton of personality. Mine just loved exploring, running (not the typical hedgie amount of running, mine ate the same amount of food or more, but ran all night long, and became less fat), and was pretty friendly to touch! Anyone could hold her and i could check her teeth (by softly pushing her lips up) without her biting me.

[–]VikingHedgehog 0 points1 point ago

Very true. Currently we have 3. The boy doesn't like being held, he hisses and pops at you. He's only happy when we let him climb the stairs. One of the girls is so-so, she's curious and seems intelligent for a hedgehog. She isn't always a bitch.

And then there's our little Thistle Fluff. I swear she's not a hedgehog. She isn't frightened by anything, and she loves to snuggle. She will literally curl up with you and nap on the floor. She is ridiculous. Hedgehogs are cute, but not supposed to be that sweet.

[–]HedgehogFan 1 point2 points ago

I'll disagree with sanshiki on several points:

65 degrees is WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYY too cold. Even 70 is too cold for some hedgehogs, and a hedgehog at 72 degrees can still get chilled and sick if exposed to a draft. Six square feet is the minimum floor space.

The sidebar links in /r/hedgehog have good care information in them.

[–]sanshiki 0 points1 point ago

haha i wanted to say room temperature, but it didn't sound THAT nice if i didn't put in numbers, so i just did a quick google search. SCREW THIS GUIDE WHICH SAYS 65~85 FAHRENHEIT!

I live in a fairly warm country(South East Asia) which has summers all year long and no other seasons, so the temperature is perfect for my hedgie all year long!

[–]HedgehogFan 1 point2 points ago

Yes, the Internet (and bookstores) are full of really outdated and downright dangerous information about hedgehog care.

[–]Todamont 0 points1 point ago

/r/hedgehog. Fuck, this site never ceases to amaze me.

[–]HedgehogFan 0 points1 point ago

Not for most people. They are nocturnal, they must be kept warm, they need routine in their lives, they hate loud noises and commotion, they're expensive, vet care (good vet care at least) is hard to find and expensive, and there's a metric ton of bad care information out there.

See the sidebar links in /r/hedgehog for more information on what it takes to properly care for a hedgehog.

[–]Ihvahn 1 point2 points ago

We wants it. We needs it. Precioussss...

[–]OnceUponASheep 1 point2 points ago

...Can hedgehogs be cuddled? Like... are they actually as prickly as they look?

[–]daveshow07 3 points4 points ago

their underside is soft... their spikes are actually hardened hair, and it feels very much like a thick, pokey, paint brush bristle. They are kinda prickly when you first handle them but once you've done it a few times it really doesn't bother you much.

[–]wellhushmypuppies 1 point2 points ago

holy shit. i just died. thanks a lot.

[–]MarsSpaceship 1 point2 points ago

hahaha... I want one.

[–]JovaBoswell 5 points6 points ago

I'm sure you could get a whole bunch of raspberries from your local supermarket.

[–]CrankyDreamer 1 point2 points ago

We need more of hedgehogs here! They're such precious animal!

[–]stefani-carwell 1 point2 points ago

I once held a hedgehog. It shat upon my hands.

[–]VikingHedgehog 0 points1 point ago

I started posting pictures of my hedgehogs. Nobody liked them. I cried and then gave up.

[–]Lutherie 0 points1 point ago

Until they start frothing at the mouth

[–]TheMadMule 3 points4 points ago

This applies to many things in life.

[–]glemnar 0 points1 point ago

They're only precious until they bite you because your hands smell good.

It might be because i subconsciously know that i can't hug him.

Prickleberry!

[–]taranova 0 points1 point ago

I want a hedgehog sooo badly. Unfortunately, they are illegal in Pennsylvania. :-(

[–]ragebird3 0 points1 point ago

Why are they illegal?

[–]daveshow07 4 points5 points ago

they're technically an exotic pet and many states have legislation that bans exotic pet ownership without a license of some sort.

[–]FireFlyz351 1 point2 points ago

I agree how is something that awwww material illegal I guess next your gonna tell me that cake is illegal in Pennsylvania because it tastes good (please let this be a lie).

[–]AffeKonig 0 points1 point ago

I see what you did there, also they are illegal here in PA.

[–]taranova 1 point2 points ago

A very unfortunate political battle has developed within the State of Pennsylvania making hedgehogs illegal to the point where threats have been made against even the transport of hedgehogs through the state on the way to another state. All of this is the result of an initial (and unusual) law established in the 1990's. Under that law, hedgehogs within the state were legal, but it was illegal to import fresh bloodlines into the state. A few breeders violated that law resulting in the Pennsylvania Game Commission (PGC) declaring all out war on all hedgehogs within the state.

[–]ragebird3 0 points1 point ago

Thank you everyone. I learn so much from Reddit. If I'm ever on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire and the final question is about hedgehogs being illegal in Pennsylvania, I will send you all some money.

[–]VikingHedgehog 0 points1 point ago

I can never ever move to Pennyslvania. How can they be so mean to my adorable hedgies?

[–]HedgehogFan 2 points3 points ago

According to a Pennsylvania state worker in the 1990s, to "protect the native Pennsylvania pork industry" or in other words, because governments are stupid.

[–]bennycoco1233 0 points1 point ago

i have a hedgehog in pennsylvania i'm willing to sell... i posted a picture of it!

[–]taranova 0 points1 point ago

how much would you be willing to sell it for?

[–]bennycoco1233 0 points1 point ago

$150, cage, toys, blankets, food and all

[–]taranova 0 points1 point ago

Where in pa are you around I'm close to Harrisburg

[–]bennycoco1233 0 points1 point ago

bethlehem

[–]HedgehogFan -1 points0 points ago

Why do you want to sell your hedgehog?

[–]bennycoco1233 0 points1 point ago

i'm graduating college soon and the apartment i'm moving into doesn't allow pets

[–]HedgehogFan -1 points0 points ago

Yes, I'm seeing a lot of activity like this on Craigslist. I've taken in hedgehogs from people in your situation. I don't mean to sound really down on you for it, but I really, really wish more people like you would really stop and think about the animals before taking responsibility for one while in such an unstable position such as being in school.

Whoever takes in your hedgehog is going to have to deal with the heartbreak that you're about to cause by, in her eyes, abandoning her. They are very intelligent, very sensitive creatures, and no such life change comes without significant impact upon them.

If you can't find a really good person to take her in, please contact the Hedgehog Welfare Society (http://www.hedgehogwelfare.org) or the International Hedgehog Association (http://www.hedgehogclub.com), both of whom can help find her a good forever home.

[–]rawr0401 -1 points0 points ago

wow you are kind of rude. People don't know what their future plans are when it comes to moving in to new places. Yes the love their hedgehog they are just unable to care for it because the place does not allow hedgehogs. It is not his fault. He can not see into the future.

[–]HedgehogFan -1 points0 points ago

If that's rude to you, you shouldn't go outdoors with that thin skin of yours. Are you one of those kids who got a trophy for everything and now can't take criticism of any kind?

Fact of the matter remains that too many people get animals without really thinking about if they're actually willing and able to commit to their care. Blaming the apartment complex is a convenient excuse, in my opinion. Then there's the whole "having a hedgehog in a state in which they are illegal in the first place" issue.

[–]fortnight14 0 points1 point ago

I can't tell what I want more - a hedgehog or a raspberry. It's close right now

[–]chickenmer 0 points1 point ago

[–]DevilsmeadReturned -1 points0 points ago

Anyone else think he/she looks like a jelly filled doughnut?

[–]robotortoise -1 points0 points ago

Every time I see a hedgehog, I think about what they said at the zoo about that if you touch a hedgehog, you could get an infection because they roll around in lion poo.

[–]ib4student -1 points0 points ago

Wouldn't the xylitol in the raspberry damage the hedgehog's organs and lower its blood pressure too much?

disclaimer: not a vet

[–]flying_sinatra -1 points0 points ago

That would be one uncomfortable raspberry beret.

[–]var_without_a_clause -1 points0 points ago
