Are there any high res pictures of the other side of the earth? Preferably Australia.

[–]Itakemycock3atatime 25 points26 points ago

No, the earth is flat.

[–]Always_Leaves_You_Ha 13 points14 points ago

The original picture makes it quite clear that the earth is in fact square.

[–]_josh 2 points3 points ago

These "Blue Marble" images are produced by NASA and aren't just one big image - they're "composite images" produced by months of satellite observations.

[–]Always_Leaves_You_Ha -1 points0 points ago

Not perfect, but it will do for now. Thank you.

[–]_meraxes 22 points23 points ago

I'm nowhere in that picture. See you on the other side...

[–]lud1120 12 points13 points ago

Well, I'm slightly behind that continent in the currently darkened Europe.

[–]Chakky 1 point2 points ago

There's another continent?

[–]lud1120 0 points1 point ago

In fact seven of them!

[–]mathboy0 11 points12 points ago

Where's this from?

Edit: To be clear, I mean, is this a composite of satellite images, or was it taken as a single image, and if so, by what spacecraft?

[–]somebadjuju 30 points31 points ago

space.

[–]Itakemycock3atatime 6 points7 points ago

Bullshit!

[–]chicobigfoot -4 points-3 points ago

I think it's a background for the iPad. So that's one place it's from.

[–]arefx 19 points20 points ago

It really is the most beautiful planet I've ever seen.

[–]Hi_There_Face_Here 59 points60 points ago

You might be biased

[–]arefx 6 points7 points ago

maybe a little bit, but there is life on ours, I havent seen that on any others... yet.

[–]sebmck 1 point2 points ago

Unfortunately not intelligent life.

[–]isdnpro -1 points0 points ago

Hey man leave the animals alone!

[–]jpops91 2 points3 points ago

I think Saturn is pretty breathtaking as well.

[–]jaymark 7 points8 points ago

[–]feebdaedx0 4 points5 points ago

No, I am not!

[–]MrRey 2 points3 points ago

In fact I'm almost on the other side.

[–]Glassotron 2 points3 points ago

You're way off, buddy.

[–]pjng 2 points3 points ago

Damn you, NASA. I want one of Europe. :)

[–]lingerlingerlinger 8 points9 points ago

It's pictures like this that gave me the most ignorant, ethnocentric view of the world for over 15 years. Oh how it is growing up in America

[–]flyingbattleship5 1 point2 points ago

its already my background from months ago, bro. but its cool, this is basically the best picture ever.

[–]x4NDYB0Yx 1 point2 points ago

what if I told you I was from mars?

[–]hey_gang 1 point2 points ago

I can see my house from here.

[–]fargin_bastiges 1 point2 points ago

Came here to see righteous indignation that the picture was centered on North America. Wasn't disappointed.

[–]anoxy 3 points4 points ago

Because this hasn't been posted a zillion times before...

[–]Hi_There_Face_Here 2 points3 points ago

Pennsylvania is covered up by clouds- go figure

[–]JamesLLL 0 points1 point ago

McKean county's not! There's still some sun!

[–]chriswalkeninmemphis 0 points1 point ago

Yep, raining in Wisconsin too.

[–]MechanicalGun 2 points3 points ago

I still find it crazy how unreal this picture looks even after seeing tons of times. It seriously looks like a photoshopped image.

[–]SeannyOC 6 points7 points ago

It is a photoshopped image. It's been stitched together and artificially colored. Probably somewhere around 300 to 500 images were stitched together. And, since satellite images are in black & white, color is added in later. This is the replacement image for the previous super-famous world image, from the 1970s.

[–]mathboy0 0 points1 point ago

And I find that a bit sad -- the original was a single photograph, and that's pretty incredible.

[–]J4k0b42 0 points1 point ago

This gives you a small taste of the overview effect. Imagine how it would look first hand.

[–]70ga 0 points1 point ago

welcome to erf

[–]mookiebomber 0 points1 point ago

Look at the Mexican Pacific waters!

[–]JamesLLL 0 points1 point ago

Must be a reflection of the camera's flash.

[–]BlackJesus420 0 points1 point ago

it's the reflection of the sun.

[–]Bandit1379 0 points1 point ago

Is it crazy that it took me only a second to find, within ~25 miles, where I am on that globe?

[–]hey_gang 0 points1 point ago

Where do you live? I had no trouble finding San Francisco.

[–]Bandit1379 0 points1 point ago

Coachella Valley. It's right above (and a little to the left of) the largest inland body of water in Ca.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

It really shows how insignificent we are.

[–]enza252 0 points1 point ago

A little more to the right, and it may be correct.

[–]potterarchy 0 points1 point ago

No matter how many times I see these pictures, they always look computer-generated to me. I just can't wrap my head around this concept of seeing the entire Earth all at once. I think that would be the only reason I'd go up into space, is to just see this darn globe-thingy for myself.

[–]AnimaSeverem 0 points1 point ago

What really gets me in perspective is that one large cloud is completely obscuring my entire home state.

[–]SecondSkin 0 points1 point ago

It didn't bother you to see the Earth tiny and unprotected, surrounded by darkness?

[–]fattusb 0 points1 point ago

Never dreamed an iPhone default would get so much karma

[–]NelsonBig 0 points1 point ago

Is it just me or does California look like one big golf course?

[–]REDDIT- 0 points1 point ago

Hopefully r/spaceporn likes it more than r/pics did. It's really beautiful.

[–]Nukls[S] 0 points1 point ago

Is it bad form to delete that previous post? Been trying to find the appropriate place. It was also posted to, and removed by, r/earthporn, but they recommended reposting it here. It's a nice shot of this side of the planet.

[–]REDDIT- 0 points1 point ago

Oh, no. Definitely not bad form.

[–]shadowofmeadow 0 points1 point ago

Looks more like 'Murica to me.

[–]Khalexus 0 points1 point ago

I want to see this exact style of photo, but the other side of the globe. Sorry America, but the Eurasia, Africa and Australasia side is much more interesting!

Actually, just found this... awesome. Now if it had even sunlight it'd be perfect, Australasia and Indonesia are too dark, which is a shame.

I don't think I'm biased, there are just so many more fascinating landmasses on this side than the Americas. Australia is iconic, Indonesia has a beautiful scattering of islands trailing up to Asia, and the Mediterranean area is brilliant.

[–]muffley -3 points-2 points ago

While I like the idea of this picture, the fact that it's stitched together, photoshopped, and especially the crazy depth of fieldfield of view just kills it for me.

[–]machello 1 point2 points ago

Depth of field? What the hell are you talking about?

[–]muffley 2 points3 points ago

Dammit, I meant field of view.

[–]iamaelephant -2 points-1 points ago

Just the faggy side of Earth.
