Wd-40 would hinder the performance/longevity of ball bearings.

[–]kareemabduljabbq 16 points17 points ago

god, what is wrong with me. this is what I came here to say. WD-40 is for removing grease!

[–]Hopingforvibraphone 4 points5 points ago

i did not know that! learn something new everyday. isn't it named the way it is because it was the fortieth attempt at a Water Displacement solution?

[–]eXX0n 0 points1 point ago

Correct

[–]u-suck 2 points3 points ago

It's actually a water dispersant, see WD.

[–]namesaredumb 0 points1 point ago

came here to say....

[–]eXX0n -2 points-1 points ago

How can an oil based spray with poor cleaning effects be used as a degreaser?

WD-40 is a lubricant, water dispersant, rust loosener and protective spray. Just to mention some things it does.

Some of the ingredients:

51% Stoddard solvent

25% Liquefied petroleum gas

15+% Mineral oil

10-% Inert ingredients

The only ingredient that is capable of removing grease are the solvents, however they are there just to mix the other ingredients together.

That said, the WD-40 is an OLD recipe and there are other products on the marked that does the same job just 100x better.

[–]kareemabduljabbq 1 point2 points ago

i use it often on my bike chain. i usually use it to get the really thick grease off and then resort to other solvents.

fun fact: when I was a university athlete, Nyquil was on the list of banned substances. I can't think of a sport where nyquil would give a performance advantage.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points ago

sleep contests

[–]herpitusderpitus 1 point2 points ago

Probably because nyquil has Dextromethorphan and Pseudoephedrine one is dissoactive at high dosages the other is for manufacturing meth.

[–]demalo 0 points1 point ago

So I guess you could call that... a handicap?

[–]stalker007 0 points1 point ago

3-In-One Oil

Which strangely enough is owned by WD-40.

They do with lubcricant, WD40 is not one

[–]just_defy 2 points3 points ago

logic.

[–]Pyr0monk3y 17 points18 points ago

maybe, short term, wd-40 is actually not a good lubricant, once it dries it becomes a very sticky, gummy substance. It does do quite well at preventing rust though.

[–]insufficient_funds 5 points6 points ago

This is correct. WD-40 is a water-remover/rust preventer; not a lubricant. The name literally stands for "Water Displacement - 40th Attempt"

A spray on graphite or silicone lube would probably work pretty well though.

Do. Not. Use. Wd40. On. Bikes. Ever notice you need to spray almost daily. Get a proper lubricant.

[–]r00kie 4 points5 points ago

works well on bicycle chains as well

well, at least new bike chains are cheap.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

WD-40 is not good for bike chains as lubricant.

[–]insufficient_funds 0 points1 point ago

I completely agree. I've definitely used it as a lubricant more times than I care to count; but when I have other stuff on hand, the wd40 is last in the lineup. i was visiting my parents farm one day; hopped on the fourwheeler and the chain was making some naaasty noises. sprayed it with wd40 and rode a bit, still made noise. dug through the shelves of supplies in the barn and found a can of spray silicone lube; soaked the chain with that and bastard hasnt made noise since.

[–]BrainInAJar 9 points10 points ago

No, WD-40 is a water repellant and solvent. It doesn't lubricate (well)

[–]BelligerentCow 5 points6 points ago

I predict 6 days until a philosoraptor with this sentence appears

[–]mr_tw 0 points1 point ago

Already done

[–]WizardsMyName 3 points4 points ago

Came here to point out WD-40 is a degreaser and not a lubricant, glad to see a clutch of comments to that effect already.

[–]aardvarked 2 points3 points ago

Title is wrong.

[–]Tobislu 7 points8 points ago

Downvoted for terrible title.

/r/bicycling is kicking in the door....

[–]LordJason 3 points4 points ago

One of the most sensationalized reddit headlines of modern time.

[–]MRogue 0 points1 point ago

Only if he injected it into himself.

A recent observation I made on Facebook: If a cow eats a venus flytrap, it's an herbivore eating a carnivore.

Everybody else racing wheelchairs has carbon fiber wheelchairs, bearings packed with a little grease. With the issue of wheelchair resistance resolved the only test is your human strength.

[–]moukou9 0 points1 point ago

WD-40 fixes everything. Except people.

[–]deigm 0 points1 point ago

Technically food is performance enhancing.

[–]Pharose 0 points1 point ago

Can an athlete drink water before a race? Same concept.

[–]N0ah87 0 points1 point ago

I had a discussion with my girlfriend yesterday after asking the question "If conjoined twins go to Red Robin, are they allowed to order a burger with bottomless fries and split it? Can they continue to get fries?"

This applies of course not to just Red Robin but buffets and all such things.

[–]namesaredumb 0 points1 point ago

an interesting question despite the inaccuracy of wd-40. if a runner has carbon fiber spring prosthetics for legs that propel him faster than natural bodied runners does that count and performance enhancing? link related: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XSLDd5JW0fM

[–]FreshFruitCup 0 points1 point ago

Are sneakers performance enhancing for marathoners?

[–]namesaredumb 0 points1 point ago

i have to tell customers this at my bike shop at least once a week. "my bike is loud and seizing up, i dont know why i sprayed everything down with wd-40." COME ON

[–]jarjarwang -2 points-1 points ago

Wheelchair competitions have equipment rules.

[–]Blahblag12321 6 points7 points ago

Yeah people should stop trying to make jokes on /r/funny what is wrong with them?

[–]rewrewsuh -1 points0 points ago

soon to be philosoraptored...

[–]SmoothWD40 -1 points0 points ago

WD40 is mostly used for robotic lubrication. If you are a human I would not recommend using it as a lubricant.

Trust me I am an expert.

[–]kyebosh -2 points-1 points ago

YLIA.
