Thought for the day: Blessed is the mind to small for doubt

[–]ghastlyactions 5 points6 points ago

Hopefully this is an example of why you think religion is intolerable?

[–]imperial_criid 2 points3 points ago

Yes it is, it's actually a quote from Warhammer 40k (not sure if you knew that or not), it was this or 'Be strong in your ignorance' :P.

I didn't, but my respect for Warhammer 40k just grew. Eldar quoting philosophy - brilliant.

Thought for the day, courtesy of the Immortal God-Emperor of Mankind http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Thought_for_the_day#.T7G3W-tYtJQ. Not quite Eldar, basically if anything sounds remotely 'fundi' its probably an Imperial quote.

I find it ironic that an excellent quote by a great thinker which advocated humility is now so often used as a means of dogmatic one-upmanship against religious people as a whole.

Yeah it definitly cuts both ways, it our tribal nature demarcating division and factions of people so that we may gloat at our made up enemy. This is one reason I do not trust humans, myself being included as well. But I also know it is wrong to do so, so do not capitalize an argument with that please.

Looks similar to the Dunning-Kruger effect to me.

As Kruger and Dunning conclude, "the miscalibration of the incompetent stems from an error about the self, whereas the miscalibration of the highly competent stems from an error about others"

This is what I thought.

One of the most frustrating things in the world. Forget who said it but right along the same lines: Never argue with a fool. They'll drag you down to their level and win through experience.

Proverbs 26:4

Answer not a fool according to his foolishness, lest you become like him, even you.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

"Answer a fool according to his folly, or he will be wise in his own eyes."

This is why I love proverbs, since this verse is 26:5. The author juxtaposed these right next to each other on purpose.

You could have posted this as a self-post.

I see this quote like once a week on here, but not really complaining- it's such a great quote that it just reminds to keep using it.

Clearly, Bertrand Russell lived in the days before /r/atheism.

I've never seen an image so compressed that it turned into a valid QF code.

Funny, because I find so many on this sub reddit to be completely certain of their belief system
