Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

He was stripped of his photo of the year award and banned from competing again because it was fake staged. More details here.

[–]ASmellyFrostTroll 86 points87 points ago

I love how it says he hired a wolf. I didn't know wolves were on the job market.

[–]crapallthetime 67 points68 points ago

1-800-RENTAWOLF. For all your lupine needs.

[–]Genmaken 34 points35 points ago

Don't forget 1-800-RENTAWEREWOLF. For all your Lupin needs.

[–]Shadax 13 points14 points ago

Just whatever you do, don't mix those two numbers up.

[–]doesntgetreddit 2 points3 points ago

I thought that all your Lupin needs were covered by 1-800-RENTATHEIF

[–]Genmaken 1 point2 points ago

Oh no you di'int!

[–]fivesnogucks 2 points3 points ago

Werewolf?

There, wolf.

[–]anduril1010 3 points4 points ago

I prefer 1-800-RENTADIREWOLF

[–]lukini101 1 point2 points ago

I don't know if this number is real or not, but my skype app is allowing me to call it.

[–]crapallthetime 0 points1 point ago

Have them sent to your work address. Hilarity is sure to ensue.

[–]rsplatpc 25 points26 points ago

I have filled out my resume, I hope they call back.

[–]NegativeGhostrider 1 point2 points ago

Isn't that a Husky, though?

[–]Backstop 4 points5 points ago

British English throws me a curve like that too often. We need to all get on the same page here. Hire = Rent

[–]timdiggerm 0 points1 point ago

Yup! They say "Hire a car" and such. Heck, they might even hire cabs.

[–]WreckerCrew 0 points1 point ago

Yea because you know those animals in movies are just picked up in front of Home Depot.

[–]malcs85 0 points1 point ago

Cats are the worst.

[–]walgman 0 points1 point ago

I've hired a few in my time ;)

[–]IBWorking 0 points1 point ago

Times are tough all over.

[–]TexasHokie 0 points1 point ago

Damn wolves, taking our jobs

[–]Shadax 53 points54 points ago

"Fake" is a bit misleading. That makes it sound like it was photoshopped or something.

"Staged" is the word you're looking for.

[–]IBWorking 25 points26 points ago

Would you prefer "fraudulent", since it violated the contest terms?

[–]ExdigguserPies[!] 8 points9 points ago

Yeah. It's still amazing photo. It was entered into the wrong competition.

[–]Shadax 1 point2 points ago

That's what made me feel better; it still is an actual undoctored photo.

[–]Brisco_County_III -1 points0 points ago

It's not "wildlife photography", because it isn't wild. It's a counterfeit product under the label of the real thing, basically. Typically we call that "fake".

[–]Shadax 1 point2 points ago

Doesn't it make more sense to be more specific though? I just don't see the point in misleading to believe the image is doctored or that it's a taxidermied wolf.

[–]DivineAna -2 points-1 points ago

Sure, but the fact that it was staged means the title of this post is entirely false...

EDIT: For those who fail at reading comprehension, I am stating that this picture is not of wildlife, nor can it be said to have been "perfect timing" given that the hired wold may have leaped over the fence 20 times before the photographer got the picture he wanted. Also, I want nothing to do with the petty playground fight I've apparently spawned.

[–]holotone 3 points4 points ago

It is a fake wildlife photo - There's no 'wild' life in it.

[–]kiko107 9 points10 points ago

i think i remember an expert in tracking the wolves had never seen them in the wild leaping over fences, when they could clearly walk between the spaces. Kind of ruins the effect of stalking it's prey.

[–]kakanczu 10 points11 points ago

From the article:

Wolf experts also questioned why the wolf would jump the gate when a wild animal was more likely to squeeze between the bars.

[–]Canis_lupus 9 points10 points ago

Yeah, we're pretty slack when it comes to gates...

[–]guy123 8 points9 points ago

I came here to make a joke about how they had to pry the film from his cold dead hands because the wolf mauled him to death. Found out the truth instead. Sucks that he would go and fake a photo like that to win a contest. On the other-hand, it's still a pretty cool pic.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]CerpinTaxes 19 points20 points ago*

I'm not sure if you're insinuating that they made a spelling mistake, but if you are, it's a pun. Because the wolf was rented (or "loaned").

I thought it was quite a clever pun and I usually hate puns.

[–]dwerg85 0 points1 point ago

Also a play on the "lone wolf" thing.

[–]CerpinTaxes 0 points1 point ago

Well yeah... that was the point of the pun.

[–]gkidd 51 points52 points ago

i came here to say this... Thank you :)

[–]Im_probably_drunk 2 points3 points ago

yeah me too.. It really bothers me when the top comment is of this nature, pointing out "fakeness", yet the post itself is still very highly upvoted. No doubt OP posted it KNOWING it was fake... Wish people would read comments more. Worse than fake is... It's old as fuck IMO, and a re-post.

[–]stroud 25 points26 points ago

i came here to say this: "i came here to say this"

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]karadan100 1 point2 points ago

You beat me to it.

Trained wolves. Whod've thunk it?

[–]Hellzapoppin 3 points4 points ago

Cheating or not, it's still a bloody good picture.

[–]MisderMouse 0 points1 point ago

Came here to say this... you are doing wonderful work fine sir.

[–]tylr 0 points1 point ago

I came here to discuss the prevalence of staged "wildlife" photography, but was shocked to find out that this guy won an award while claiming that this wolf, with its perfect coat, was wild.

[–]ERich256 0 points1 point ago

well, it was still pretty good timing I guess.

[–]hautch 0 points1 point ago

I called bullshit immediately. No way the dude is just sitting there with a super high shutter speed and flash setup then BAM WILD WOLF.

[–]DDancy -2 points-1 points ago

NOOOOOPPPEEE!!!

Chuck Testa!

[–]NewCommenter 0 points1 point ago

You probably thought this meme was alive. It's not.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

It's not actually fake, it's just that he broached the rules of the competition by staging the event.

[–]ElGuano 4 points5 points ago

He raised the topic of the rules in conversation?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Whoops, incorrect use of the word broach! I meant broke.

[–]IBWorking 0 points1 point ago

I think he meant to say that "he poached the rules of the competition".

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]MinkOWar 8 points9 points ago

Easy enough when you can just have the wolf do the trick over when you miss it.

[–]KaiserWilhelm3 0 points1 point ago

But still arguably perfect timing.

[–]Torgan 4 points5 points ago

Yeah even though it's staged it's still a great photo.

[–]mancko 1 point2 points ago

I used to work for a little newspaper, and while I had an old Pentax on loan from the darkroom to take my pics on assignment, even the middle range guys would have these cameras that you would press the button and the camera would take about twenty pics over the course of a second or something. And that was before digital...

So the timing doesn't have to be that exact on the part of the human... One of the pics in there has a pretty good (or at least much better) chance to be what you want...

Is this right? This is my impression of "perfectly timed" pictures... I don't mean to ruin the mystique, but any pro photogs want to weigh in on this?

[–]remondo 0 points1 point ago

I was going say this was taken using motion sensors but that was when my faith in humanity some-what remained.

[–]piratesbooty -1 points0 points ago

damn. Came in here to say this.

[–]TheMadMule -2 points-1 points ago

I'm glad that article confirmed my suspicions. Because how could one snap such a close shot of a wild wolf doing anything without being torn to pieces?

[–]jannne 8 points9 points ago

Remotely or automatically triggered camera.

[–]ChatGarou -1 points0 points ago

The wolf wouldn't be there to begin with. They are sharp enough to know people=death.

[–]acntech 166 points167 points ago

That photo was actually staged. It was a big scandal because the photographer won an award with it.

[–]TheHangOfThursday 20 points21 points ago

I remember that shit. People were pissed.

[–]FallenChicken 53 points54 points ago

I am glad you said "staged", rather than fake.

[–]SPACE_LAWYER 36 points37 points ago

its fake because it was staged with a professional wolf instead of a candid shot of some unemployed canid

[–]FallenChicken 17 points18 points ago

I was about to argue with you, but decided to go and look up the exact definiton of the word "fake"

Noun: A thing that is not genuine; a forgery or sham.
Adjective: Not genuine; counterfeit.
     Verb: Forge or counterfeit (something).

So, it appears that you are correct here. However, to me, saying that a picture is "fake" would imply that it was either photoshopped, or used something like a stuffed wolf. To me, "staged" reflects the problem better.

[–]kyz 3 points4 points ago

  • The photo is real.
  • The wolf is real.
  • The wolf is not authentically "wild".

The fakery occurred when the photo was entered into the "Wildlife Photographer of the Year" competition. It is not a photograph of wildlife. Passing it off as one makes it a fake wildlife photo.

[–]cloughie 5 points6 points ago

Ceci n'est pas une wolf.

[–]SPACE_LAWYER 1 point2 points ago

un loup

[–]playingwithfire 1 point2 points ago

[–]derekmyoung 0 points1 point ago

Amateur wolf. Just because they don't meet your human standards of employment, doesn't mean they're lazy and shiftless.

[–]SPACE_LAWYER 1 point2 points ago

vagabond packs of wolves roaming the countryside, riding the rails, stealing pies from windowsills

[–]RobbieOfTheHood 0 points1 point ago

What's a "professional" wolf? Lol.

[–]SPACE_LAWYER -1 points0 points ago

where are you from that you have never heard of a pro wolf?

[–]acntech -5 points-4 points ago

It's a real photo so it's not faked.

[–]SPACE_LAWYER 4 points5 points ago

it does not depict what it purports to depict. The scene is fake. the photo is a lie. call it whatever you want

I'll call it fake and staged

[–]acntech 0 points1 point ago

Of course it's staged. I said so further up. I think some people need to polish up their English.

[–]SPACE_LAWYER 0 points1 point ago

for example, how you are still pushing a bogus definition of fake

[–]NobodySpecific 0 points1 point ago

Here is one definition of fake:

|1. To contrive and present as genuine; counterfeit.

This was presented as a genuine wildlife photograph, but it is not. Therefore it is fake.

Here is another definition:

|2. To simulate; feign.

He simulated a wild wolf jumping over a fence by staging a domesticated wolf to do the act. Therefore, the photograph is a fake.

Have I helped you polish up on your English?

[–]Angstweevil 0 points1 point ago

It was a fake. It wasn't a genuine wildlife photo.

[–]zeroone 0 points1 point ago

I think most nature documentaries are staged.

[–]dzunravel 2 points3 points ago

Having worked on one about grizzly bears, I can confirm this. But we weren't using tame bears... just artificially constructed situations. We never really knew what the bears were going to do, although if we placed the right kinds of "interesting items" in the right places, we had a pretty good idea.

[–]thecowninja 0 points1 point ago

AMA request: Grizzly bear documentary guy

[–]dzunravel 1 point2 points ago

Ha ha... I only worked on one. Many of the people who were on the crew with me do this all the time; it's quite an interesting subculture. It's quite different from regular feature film production. I was amazed by how smart the bears were, in terms of the deductive reasoning skills they had. We were WAY out in the fjords of British Columbia where these bears had basically never interacted with humans before. It was the salmon run time of year so they weren't interested in us, and it gave us a great opportunity to "construct" a story that made us look like observers.

Oh, and it's kind of obligatory for this category, I should mention that Timothy Treadwell was nuts and made the entire industry look bad. The professionals that deal with bears all the time, for documentary or wildlife management reasons, are unbelievably skilled at what they do and I was amazed at the emotions they can read on the bears... which would keep us safe if a bear started giving out subtle body language that could have lead to a potentially deadly situation.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points ago*

"Yes"? So you knew but decided to misinform Reddit?

Edit: This was a reaction to jojojok who implied he knew about the photo scam.

[–]Clit_Commander 7 points8 points ago

It sucked in 2009, but in 2012 its ok! You know...times they are a changing!

Gay is the new straight, Pepsi is the new Coke and Diablo is the new WoW...

[–]tropical81 0 points1 point ago

Karma whore at it finnest

[–]graffiti81 21 points22 points ago*

Stefano Unterthiner don't need to fake no wildlife photos. All of these are taken with short lenses, probably around 35-55mm.

He's got other great sets, like this king penguin one. The best shots were in a National Geographic issue a few years back, so they're not on his site.

[–]crapallthetime 3 points4 points ago

Those are fantastic!

[–]graffiti81 1 point2 points ago

He's by far my favorite wildlife photographer. Domestically, I like Moose Petersons work a lot, but I've never seen better series of shots than those made by Unterthiner.

[–]crapallthetime 3 points4 points ago

With a name like Moose Peterson his profession was destined.

[–]Gorignak 2 points3 points ago

To be fair though, none are as cool as the wolf one.

[–]graffiti81 4 points5 points ago

But they're not staged.

[–]Gorignak 0 points1 point ago

Maybe he does need to fake some wildlife photos...

[–]walgman 0 points1 point ago

He must be bloody living with them to get that close. Brilliant.

[–]graffiti81 5 points6 points ago

Actually, the story goes, as I understand it, that those were living on an island with almost no human contact and they weren't at all afraid of him.

[–]gunny16 0 points1 point ago

I was going to say that I'd be terrified of them... until I saw the 6th picture (I can't link it, but it's the one that's there's one chillaxing by the log)

[–]graffiti81 1 point2 points ago

Third row down second from the right is my favorite. It's a young one hanging above him.

But after hearing what that chimp did to the woman in CT, I'd be very afraid around any kind of primate.

[–]HookDragger 0 points1 point ago

How much shit did he catch for those?

[–]graffiti81 0 points1 point ago

Not sure. There was an interview with him about shooting that set, but I can't find it immediately. I know the shot called "Troublemaker" (first shot in the linked set) won the same award as the linked wolf shot in 2008.

[–]HookDragger 0 points1 point ago

I was referencing monkeys' penchant for poo flinging.

[–]graffiti81 0 points1 point ago

I understand that.

[–]Top_Drawer 0 points1 point ago

Those faces are so human-like that it scares me. Excellent shots.

[–]tiexano 6 points7 points ago

Can't be real. Got neither a shark nor a helicopter.

[–]Fr4t 12 points13 points ago

Awww, he thinks he's horses.

[–]GrayStudios 2 points3 points ago

This looks like something out of a video game.

[–]shizfest 2 points3 points ago

I thought it was a screenshot from skyrim

[–]sebastianallan 2 points3 points ago

He used a session wolf for this, freelancing animals are apparently not 'wildlife'

[–]dukesam 1 point2 points ago

The rock on the left is disturbing me.

[–]lettucelord 1 point2 points ago

Zelda anyone?

[–]paradoxofchoice 1 point2 points ago

OP doesn't care that it's not really wildlife being photographed, he'll take your karma.

[–]mepsipaxatwork 1 point2 points ago

Staged but still upvoted?

[–]Narnian_Factor 2 points3 points ago

I know this photo is staged but how do photographers get photos similar to this without getting killed?

[–]davidcore 24 points25 points ago

Setting up a camera with motion sensors.

[–]Stormdancer 1 point2 points ago

Came here to say this. Gave upvotes. Left happy.

[–]IBWorking 2 points3 points ago

[–]missangel006 0 points1 point ago

I was about to say... a wild wolf.. flash it with that light.. scare it.. and watch you become its dinner.

[–]neoikon 0 points1 point ago

Amazing picture! Why in the world would so many people down vote this?

[–]ElShanko 0 points1 point ago

I believe it's because the photographer said it was wild wolf captured on the hunt, but later proved to be a tame wolf and a staged photo:

http://gizmodo.com/5454325/judges-decide-wolf-jumping-over-fence-photo-is-fakesort-of

A good shot to be sure, but not 'real' in the sense of a wildlife picture

[–]neoikon 0 points1 point ago

Now explain the thousands of other similar situations where someone creates somethings and people downvote. ;] (thanks for the info)

[–]MinkOWar 7 points8 points ago

Staged, not fake. Disqualifies him from the contest, but the photo is real, just no where near as interesting as he claimed it was.

[–]tjmjnj 0 points1 point ago

its not a fake.. the photographer was a spanish guy and he won a prestigious award for the photo, however the wolf was trained so.. no more award.

still though, it is a very good photograph and he should be proud of it.

[–]drbergzoid 0 points1 point ago

Holy shit, this is not only super old, it's also super fake.

[–]mobastar 0 points1 point ago

I wish more people were aware of that the majority of 'nature' shots/movies are fake and not natural at all. Next time you see a marvelous shot, odds are it was staged. Sure great moments happen but they're few and far between.

[–]appel 0 points1 point ago

Oh well, awesome photo nonetheless. Will make a great wallpaper.

[–]designer_wannabe 0 points1 point ago

great timing - just when the wolf was starting to fly! up, up and away!

[–]cdemps62 -1 points0 points ago

insert game of thrones reference

[–]MeLikeyMeLikeyNot 0 points1 point ago

You saved me from getting downvotes apparently, man. I'll give you an upvote for that.

[–]cdemps62 1 point2 points ago

It's funny...in an attempt to make fun of the people who would in fact make that "grey wind?!?!" comment or something like that, I have been perceived as the very type of person I'm mocking. Such is life...the mob is fickle.

[–]EileenCat -1 points0 points ago

And then the wolf turns around and tears the photographer apart.

[–]limus -1 points0 points ago

That's a fake. A stuffed wolf.

[–]StevenXC -2 points-1 points ago

I'm more impressed at how the photographer found his way into Hyrule.

[–]aptrapani 2 points3 points ago

Not all wolfs are the same. That's just racism.

[–]ValleyOfTheMountain -1 points0 points ago

Because I do.

[–]apetross -1 points0 points ago

[–]AverageToaster -1 points0 points ago

that photo looks shitty, also I don't think that is a wolf on the right?
