Misread that and thought he was praying to Daft Punk :/.

[–]silenc3x 59 points60 points ago

[–]dustinechos 1 point2 points ago

I was expecting a Big Red joke. Maybe I'm just showing my age.

[–]Lord_of_Potatoes 0 points1 point ago

Harder, better, faster, longer.

It still sounds like its about sex...

[–]everythingispurple 43 points44 points ago

you really showed him

[–]Ugbrog 14 points15 points ago

No, they're referencing a really weird Big Red commercial.

[–]SweetNeo85 10 points11 points ago

Thank you. I am so glad I'm not the only one who thought of Big Red.

[–]taint_stain 3 points4 points ago

People used to call me Big Red, but I told 'em "Stop it." Cuz there's only one Big Red. America's number one cinnamon gum.

[–]koavf 54 points55 points ago

What is the point of this?

[–]zHellas 76 points77 points ago

"Hey Reddit! Here's a JPEG of me being a cunt to a religious person on Facebook making a question about if their prayers are really being answered! UPBOATS TO TEH LEFT, PLEEZ!"

/harpdarp

[–]godlessatheist 26 points27 points ago

Doesn't this sum up /r/atheism in general?

[–]DallasJones 10 points11 points ago

/r/atheism is pretty much /r/circlejerk, let's face it.

[–]godlessatheist 12 points13 points ago

Everything on this website is a circlejerk.

[–]DallasJones 6 points7 points ago

YOUR USERNAME IS A CIRCLEJERK. Sorry. Some of the smaller subreddits aren't so much. Nobody would bother with smaller subs if karma was all there was to gain.

[–]godlessatheist -1 points0 points ago

Yeah I meant the larger subreddits.

And yes just a couple weeks ago I posted a Zach Braff picture on /r/funny that really wasn't that funny and I got 1200 karma for it. It's so easy to just appeal to the masses and get karma for it even when you yourself think it's not good.

[–]DallasJones 2 points3 points ago

The one of Turk playing Jenga? I may or may not have upvoted that.

[–]godlessatheist 2 points3 points ago

Yep that one. You probably did but I appealed to the masses didn't I?

I laughed when I saw it on Facebook but then I thought to myself "Karma!" and I was right.

[–]elperroborrachotoo -1 points0 points ago

This neither makes r/atheism any better on an objective scale, nor is it true.

[–]flying-sheep 1 point2 points ago

I've read this comment so often that I practically don't know if people making it have their own private circlejerk somewhere...

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points ago

They do. /r/circlebroke.

[–]flying-sheep 1 point2 points ago

thanks, but having seen it now, i wish i hadn’t asked.

[–]Vivalayeo 0 points1 point ago

At least circlejerk is funny most of the time

[–]dustinechos -1 points0 points ago

HA HA YA r/atheism IS A CIRCAL JERK ISN"T IT? HAHA!

[–]opallix 10 points11 points ago

That part is not surprising. What is surprising is that the OP is not funny or look-someone-got-what-they-deserved at all and yet it still gets front-paged.

It's fucking boring. This is run-of-the-mill shit.

[–]koavf -2 points-1 points ago

That's what I was afraid of.

[–]sushislushie 4 points5 points ago

In before the status maker was referring to if he could have prevented something tragic from happening, such as the death of a loved one, and OP's attempt at karma just made him cry.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Or maybe helped him realise that he wasn't to blame for whatever it was.....

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points ago

Red's post is kind of sad and it makes me wonder what they're going through.

[–]Kilroy8675309 2 points3 points ago

Obviously not narrow passages.

[–]SOMETHING_POTATO 83 points84 points ago

The general consensus is that you're a douchebag, OP.

[–]_KATANA 33 points34 points ago

Yeah, OP. Fuck you and the horse you rode in on.

[–]ani625 10 points11 points ago

Especially the horse.

[–]taint_stain 13 points14 points ago

Really just the horse. We just use you as an excuse for fucking your horse. Or whomsoever's horse you rode in on.

[–]Anus_Blender 2 points3 points ago

Never have "whomsoever" and "fucking your horse" appeared in such close proximity.

[–]ItsTuesdaySally 12 points13 points ago

Wouldn't it be great if all Facebook posts of people being d-bags got this kind of response?

[–]taint_stain 6 points7 points ago

Revolution time guys. We're really doing it this time!

[–]scylus -1 points0 points ago

Revolution time/ c'mon grab your friends/ we'll go to very/ distant lands...

[–]Arctic_Silver_5 -2 points-1 points ago

Come on, that horse had neighry a thing to do with OPs thoughts.

[–]DallasJones 8 points9 points ago

This will not become a pun thread. I'm stopping it here.

[–]taint_stain 2 points3 points ago

Didn't realize you were the mare of this here comment town.

[–]Epoh -3 points-2 points ago

OP gave FB poster a harsh e-slap of reality to the face, but not as hard as the horse he was slapping riding into the town of Atheism banking on some high-5's. Ouch.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]Vivalayeo 4 points5 points ago

Really? So say you both support different sports teams, and they post something. Is it absolutely fucking necessary to respond to every one of their posts arguing? Didn't think so.

[–]itsableeder -1 points0 points ago

Based on my facebook wall last night - after Man City won the premiership - it absolutely is necessary to have full-on fan wars on every football-related post.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]Vivalayeo -1 points0 points ago

In terms of sports teams, how would you like it if someone responded every freaking time in a condescending or argumentative manner? You wouldn't enjoy it. All I'm saying is give people a level of respect, yes we shouldn't respect the beliefs, but respect the person. For instance for someone posting that they have lost a loved one and hope that they are in heaven are you really going to shove it in their face that you don't believe God exists? Theres a time and there is a place, but the fact is commenting on every religious persons posts is just a dick thing to do.

If you don't want her shit showing up on your news feed, unsubscribe or remove her as a friend, its not difficult.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]Vivalayeo -1 points0 points ago

Um sorry first of all turn the dickhead meter down a notch. Secondly when did I ever say I was offended? There is a difference between being offended at everything, and people that piss you off because they have to get their say in everytime.

It's ok though, I know you have everything figured out and want to show off your critical thinking skills to the world, but until you mature a bit you're just going to come across as a jackass.

Have a nice day, wanker.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]Vivalayeo -1 points0 points ago

Jeez, you make me laugh, but its ok you'll hopefully come to that realisation yourself. By the way, I'm not religious, another false assumption on your behalf. Toughen up? Sure, that's not hard to do on the internet. And it's funny that you believe you have everything figured out, so I'm guessing you are new to this whole charade. Hmm, let me use a nice wee quote to some it up mate, you'll love this being Bertrand Russell and all.

“The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, but wiser men so full of doubts"

Go jump on the atheist bandwagon my friend.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]nowhathappenedwas 53 points54 points ago

The reality is that you're an asshole.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]Thewalruscobainfloyd 3 points4 points ago

OP shared this on reddit. So this is also fair game. So thou shall call him an asshole.

[–]dustinechos -1 points0 points ago

Yeah but nowwhathappenedwas made a comment. So the original comment is also fair game. So thou shall call out people out for calling other people an asshole when you don't think it is necessary.

EDIT: double typed a word.

[–]TheLegENT 10 points11 points ago

thats not even funny...

[–]DatoeDakari 0 points1 point ago

It doesn't have to be, it's the facts

If it was posted in r/funny, that'd be a different story...but it's not.

[–]underswamp1008 1 point2 points ago

I've seen this argument a few times in this thread.

You know that girl (or dude) who's a total fucking bitch and says hurtful shit to other people when it's completely unwarranted and uncalled for, and then when someone calls her out on it, she says, "What?!?! It's the truth!"

Yeah, that's the same argument.

[–]DatoeDakari 2 points3 points ago

My point was that this is r/atheism, not everything here has to be funny, meaning I may have misinterpreted TheLegENT's comment to mean 'why did you post this, it's not funny'

The response on facebook is literally true, whether or not OP(or who OP stole this from) was trying to be funny, or just an ass; hence the 'it's just the facts' bit.

Of course, TheLegENT could have been commenting on the original response on facebook, under the assumption that the person was trying to be funny, which in that case my previous comment is in a completely different context and I feel like a dolt.

Context is a bitch.

[–]underswamp1008 0 points1 point ago

Well, I don't think it's that, I just think it's that if the post isn't thoughtful or teaching, then it may as well at least be funny. And it's not.

I guess I'm drawing a little bit of the "mean" part from the part about losing weight. Maybe the person was overweight, or, you know...female. Generally not a nice thing to say to anyone, but maybe OP didn't mean anything by it.

But yeah, furthermore, just because something is true, doesn't mean it's worth anything. I think this post is pretty useless.

Anyway, yeah, whatever. That's about enough mind payed to this post for me.

[–]Lake_IX 9 points10 points ago

you don't need to be such a dick about it...

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]D3PyroGS 1 point2 points ago

I just subbed to r/skeptic and r/freethought. They're a little cleaner and less douchey.

[–]knurdshogun 4 points5 points ago

anyone else singing the big red gum jingle?

[–]epsilonbob 3 points4 points ago

I was fully expecting a big red themed joke to be the 'punchline'... sadly nothing even remotely original was found instead :(

[–]MisterBadIdea 20 points21 points ago

That's a dick thing to say to someone.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points ago

He's just pointing out that more prayer wouldn't have made any difference. Maybe the person praying might take some comfort from that, instead of seemingly taking needless blame on himself.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points ago

This post gave me cancer. Die in a fire OP.

[–]LibertyLizard 7 points8 points ago

So what you're saying is that prayer and fasting can solve most of America's problems?

[–]ib4student 19 points20 points ago

Mostly the fasting

[–]hapy45 13 points14 points ago

Time to face reality. No one like facebook screen shots.

[–]kittenkat4u 3 points4 points ago

i don't mind them as long as they are funny or inspire a good discussion/conversation. this....this was neither.

[–]bassgoonist 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, the 1300+ points is a total coincidence.

[–]drBOX 8 points9 points ago

SO BRAVE

[–]actionguy87 10 points11 points ago

Why do the r/atheism guys pick on the people who post religious Facebook status updates? This is just mean.

[–]harryoftheEarth 23 points24 points ago

I think it is a legitimate question. Personally, I feel like the more I pray the better I am at helping bring those prayers to fruition. Also, people have very moving experiences while fasting.

I do not think being dismissive of a very personal, spiritual question will help anyone.

[–]mongoose308 15 points16 points ago

You raise a good point. When discussing religion, we must also understand religion from the practitioner's viewpoint. Otherwise, neither side is going to get any where in discussion.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points ago*

Except there is no discussion in any of these posts because they are full of ignorance and intolerance.

This is clearly a post full of idiocy and the upvotes speak volumes.

[–]kashra 4 points5 points ago

Ehh the upvotes are just a byproduct of the amount of people here these days. Look at 99.99% if not every single comment in this thread, All of them are negative towards the post. The post has 3300 upvotes, meaning roughly .005% of the people actually subscribed to this subredit upvoted it. It's not really hard to believe that the people with the most time (children/teens) etc are the ones upvoting these things.

[–]IHATEYOURCAT_s 1 point2 points ago

This was an extremely refreshing comment.

[–]dustinechos 0 points1 point ago

Five stars. Would read again.

[–]opallix 0 points1 point ago

If only everyone tried to think that way.

[–]Kilroy8675309 1 point2 points ago

So personal they went and stored it in a lockbox called Facebook?

Also quit being ridiculous. The fact that you think the word "spiritual" should have any weight beyond telling you whose opinion you can disregard should tell you that you're clearly in the wrong subreddit.

[–]Kgbeast1 2 points3 points ago

"very moving experiences while fasting."

Most likely hallucinations from lack of food.

[–]opallix -2 points-1 points ago

I don't think hallucinating from fasting happens. Heat and dehydration? Maybe. Fasting? No, I don't think so.

[–]sumojoe 0 points1 point ago

It does, but it takes a couple weeks before you're going to see anything, and most people don't go that long.

[–]LostIcelander 1 point2 points ago

..but why is he talking about it..? Isn't that the main thing God asks for? To pray and fast in silence.. No one should know you're doing these thing. suffering in solitude is what he's asking for. If people know about it it's pointless in gods eyes and that will be his only reward, that is people thinking how awesome he is for doing such a thing. Matthew 6:16-18 and Matthew 6:5-7.

[–]hardcoremorning 0 points1 point ago

You could always actually do something on a realistic scale to effect real change if you gave a shit. You can believe what you like, I can believe you are wasting your time if I like as well. And I have very moving experiences taking psychedelics, I don't go bragging about it though.

I can dismiss you easily. Because you are not special, you just like to think you are.

[–][deleted] -3 points-2 points ago

My friend... while everything you say I agree with.. this is r/atheism.

Doesn't this post itself tell you about what kind of people upvote here? If they upvoted this its because 100% douchbaggery reigns supreme and clearly not any considerate or deep thought.

That doesnt mean all of the people here are like that, but clearly this stuff is what makes the front page. Sad

Edit: bring the downvotes.

[–]hardcoremorning 3 points4 points ago

Go back to AdviceAnimals

[–]omizzle4shizzle 6 points7 points ago

Did Gandhi post that?

[–]exhindu 1 point2 points ago

I laughed.

[–]suraj1989 8 points9 points ago

Man, /r/atheism really sucks nowadays.

This little retort is what qualifies as a front-page post?

Put this in /r/funny or something if you'd like.

But seriously, wtf? I think I'm going to unsubscribe from this subreddit because it just gets filled with nonsense like this. And yes, I'm an atheist.

[–]Mephala -2 points-1 points ago

Can Atheists not joke? Geeze.

[–]UM4DBRO 6 points7 points ago

Joke all you want. Still doesn't mean you need to be an asshole about it.

[–]x_driven_x 1 point2 points ago

Sounds like the beginning of a Big Red commercial!

[–]murtad 1 point2 points ago

Muslims have done it for years...look where it got them...

[–]TheDudeFromOther 1 point2 points ago

...longer with big red!

[–]Deergoose 1 point2 points ago

If everyone became a super hardcore atheist, and literally lived out the new tsstament, God would be just as absent. I mean, what if every human being on earth stopped and prayed to god, do you think he would show up?

Not a fucking chance.

[–]monkalottapus 1 point2 points ago

"You don't get a refund if you over pray"

[–]loyalone 1 point2 points ago

Which is a perfect example of why we haven't achieved world peace: people are too busy praying for god to help them win the football game, pass their test or bring their loved one back from the dead.

[–]gooie 0 points1 point ago

Also atheists choosing to piss people off instead of explaining their distrust with religion.

[–]senatormeowmix 1 point2 points ago

Yes...longer on BIG RED!

[–]howareallnamestaken 5 points6 points ago

Is there ever any intelligent posts in this sub?

[–]forcedtolie 2 points3 points ago

Unless you fasted for so long that your body was forced to go into a hyperbolic state.

[–]DroopySage 3 points4 points ago

Let him do it if it makes him happy.Fuck you.

[–]oakcat 5 points6 points ago

thats just mean... hateful

[–]Everything_Is_Irie -5 points-4 points ago

You can't handle the truth.

[–]LostIcelander 0 points1 point ago

So sad that the dude is looking for answers through prayer and abstaining from nurturing himself but dude, that was kinda a dick thing to say.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points ago

So sad that the dude was obviously blaming himself for something that wasn't his fault, but hey, religion can fuck you up that way.

[–]ItsTuesdaySally 1 point2 points ago

Dude... you're kind of a dick. This shit is why people think we're assholes.

[–]Philosokitty -1 points0 points ago

How is what he said being dickish? It's a completely legitimate, real answer, although it's arguably non-effective since the original question was probably meant to be a rhetoric. There was no insult or personal attacks, nor was the answer deviant.

[–]zachkerr 1 point2 points ago

The title is dickish.

[–]Benjips 0 points1 point ago

Is there truly no way at all that you can see or understand how anyone can consider this insulting even just a little bit? Is there any way you can empathize with that person on the receiving end? Do you truly see no alternate way to think of the situation other than yours?

[–]gooie 0 points1 point ago

It is non effective, and insults someone. I see undesireable effects of his actions but not a redeeming desireable effect. So he's someone who did something undesireable. I usually call that a dickish thing to do.

[–]stuffums 1 point2 points ago

False. Fasting or starvation diets are actually prone to cause people to gain weight (once one resumes normal eating), from the metabolic problems your body receives

[–]SoulOfGinger 1 point2 points ago

I don't get the outrage. He simply answered the question from his point of view. There is far stupider stuff that makes the front page here that no one gets up in arms about.

[–]DukeOfOmnium 1 point2 points ago

Very, very nice.

[–]Bromar_Gaddafi 1 point2 points ago*

I'll probably get down voted to oblivion for posting this on r/atheism but here goes;

I'm a theist. Well, sort of. Like what seems like the majority of Americans, I go to church on Christmas and Easter and that's it (so some might not even call me a theist). I don't have a problem with gays and I don't have a problem with atheists. However, what I am tired of is atheists acting like complete victims and then turning around a posting a meme that instantly makes it to the front page because it bashes theists for even remotely believing in God or religion. It's kind of annoying when I'm on reddit to find pictures of kittens.

[–]Solomaxwell6 2 points3 points ago

what I am tired of is atheists acting like complete victims

Something to keep in mind is that a lot of atheists ARE victims. There are many devout theists who will immediately cut ties with someone who comes out as an atheist. That includes close friends and family members. Atheists can get beat up or abused because of their religion. Atheists are very distrusted in America and Canada.

That said, a lot of atheists are just douchebags. It's just good to try to put yourself in other people's shoes; they could've had a much shittier response to their lack of religion than you may realize.

[–]gooie 0 points1 point ago

Upvoted, but I really want to say I was really tempted to downvote you for assuming that I would.

But then it would prove you right. Lol. So I upvoted instead. TAKE THAT, YOU DIRTY THEIST!

[–]myfaceislikewhoa -1 points0 points ago

Completely agree with you. Fasting barely even has anything to do with god and event hat's being bashed because the person is religious. It's ridiculous, why does it have to be a war between theists and atheists. Is OP just an atheist so he/she can make fun of other human beings on this planet for not having the same mindset as him/her? And yes you can unsub from r/atheism for the front page. Just click atheism at the top of your page and on the right it'll say unsubscribe when you get to the subreddit. :)

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

And then they make sure they look at front page instead of all.

[–]myfaceislikewhoa -1 points0 points ago

I don't think that's true at all. I mean take Ramadan for example. Fasting until the sunset really makes you realize how the starving must feel. It gets you onto the level of people you've never even met, and it makes you rethink your values and basic human needs. It makes you feel grateful and lets you appreciate food and water instead of materialistic objects. When you look at it from "This experience can better me as a human being among other human beings" rather than "If I do all this maybe I'll get into heaven" then it benefits you a lot. Don't be so close minded to everything attributed to religion just because some of the religious interpret it in the wrong way. You can still be spiritual and an atheist.

[–]oreopanda46 0 points1 point ago

Ha!

[–]simon_wang12 0 points1 point ago

someone give this guy some aloe vera because he just got burned

[–]deealovr 0 points1 point ago

I think we should just enjoy the daily life and never regret.

[–]homorob0tic 0 points1 point ago

Hands down the best fb screencap I have ever seen on this reddit. If only more atheists could focus more on the lulz and less on the rageragerage.

[–]Pruningx 0 points1 point ago

are you kidding? that's some funny shit

[–]BanglaPP 0 points1 point ago

As a Muslim, who fasts during the daylight hours of Ramadan, I can tell with some manner of authoritah that fasting is a terrible way to lose weight. You'll gain that shit faster than you lose it. The best way to lose weight is to have a balanced diet and have an active lifestyle.

As for praying, I can't tell you much. Sometimes my prayers have literally come true and other times it hasn't. When it doesn't come true, I have to tell myself that the universe works the way it is supposed to work. It's not going to change just because I made a heartfelt prayers. I'm not sure anyone is going to understand my thought process here, but yeah. Whatever.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

I hate it when I see I see Facebook clips that were OBVIOUSLY setup just so someone could post nonsense to Reddit

[–]belowmenao 0 points1 point ago

hey look, another fucking facebook screen grab! you are so original!!

[–]open_the_neXt 0 points1 point ago

Harder, better, faster, stronger?

[–]rafiislost 0 points1 point ago

Considering all the homophobic support to your facebook friend and none to you, where do you live? Bible belt?

I once made a pro-gay status and a lot of people who agreed. But then again... living in San Francisco probably helped a lot.

[–]meantism 0 points1 point ago

[–]360walkaway 0 points1 point ago

He wouldn't lose weight... his metabolism would slow down a little and consume less energy actually.

[–]Bryz_ 0 points1 point ago

This would've been mildly funny if OP's grammar wasn't horrible.

[–]Raticide 0 points1 point ago

Horrible font you use. No anti-aliasing?

[–]elperroborrachotoo 0 points1 point ago

If that's the result of praying, you should try it.

[–]Jwbeach 0 points1 point ago

We must show new Redditors kindness, not hostility. They don't realize what they are doing wrong by posting stuff like this if people keep yelling at them.

[–]gooie 0 points1 point ago

My opposition to this has nothing to do with reddit. I would object to it even if it wasn't posted on reddit. I'm objecting the dickishness.

[–]belowmenao 0 points1 point ago

hey look! another facebook screengrab in r/atheism! wow, what an original idea to submit!

[–]cbyzsportzfan -3 points-2 points ago

But seriously, what the hell was she expecting someone to say?

[–]rotating_pencil -1 points0 points ago

This isn't insulting, it just answers the question quite literally.

[–]rufud -2 points-1 points ago

zing!

[–]kobeshane81 -2 points-1 points ago

*stands up and claps

[–]Evesore -1 points0 points ago

When did r/aethism become such a bunch of oversensitive sniveling crybabies? Grow up please. OP had a witty response and posted it. Based on the 1388 upvotes it was enjoyed by many – get lost.
You should all leave and make your own subreddit. See ya!

[–]Mephala -1 points0 points ago

Geeze, give the submitter a break.

It was funny. Get over yourselves.

[–]aj1t1 -1 points0 points ago

...wait... what? What's going on here---- ohhhhh, oh, oh, I'm not signed innnnn... was wondering why I was able to see this r/circlejerk disguised with a different name.

[–]Kilroy8675309 1 point2 points ago

...You're clearly signed in. You posted. Nobody's fooled.

[–]aj1t1 0 points1 point ago

My apologies for the poor story telling, that whole thing was meant to be an explanation of what was running through my mind at the time. After that occurrence, I signed in.

[–]KombyYarns -1 points0 points ago

All women could use just a little longer of a fast-- wait no, pray, PRAY!

[–]Molassesfatts -1 points0 points ago

Do you guys just friend people who you don't like on purpose so you can shit all over them when they mention god or what?

[–]andersonb47 -2 points-1 points ago

Sounds like something my ex-wife should do AMIRITE??

[–]jimpagliap -4 points-3 points ago

I'm surprised you got so many likes. Usually when someone posts an atheist response to a Facebook post they don't get many.

[–]159753456 -5 points-4 points ago

I assume you're pretty proud of yourself.

Ignorance. Fasting doesn't make you lose weight. Fasting is abstaining from food from sunrise to sunset. You eat when it's dark.

Uhhhh it DOES make you lose weight as a consequence, provided you don't stuff yourself with food when you break your fast. Less calories in means less calories saved and therefore weight can be lost. Maybe you need to recheck who the ignorant one is.

You are both wrong. First, fasting can include either total abstention from food for a period of time or intermittent abstention from food depending on time of day. Second, fasting under some circumstances can trigger metabolic famine responses which to increase the percentage of caloric intake stored as fat, which would mean that a person would gain weight in the short term.

More importantly, both of you were wrong for being jerks on the internet.

The calories that your body burns does go down a bit (8%) after a while (60+ hours), but your body doesn't store fat at a caloric deficit. This just means that the rate at which it burns fat will be slightly lowered. A "famine response" sounds a lot like "starvation mode", which only happens when you're actually, seriously, hardly any body fat left, starving.

It has been a long time since bio, but it looked like the article was talking about caloric burn rate during the fast, rather than the rate of fat storage after the fact. I suppose either way it'd be more accurate to talk about the ratio of lipolysis:lipogenesis after the fact. I poked around a bit and didn't find anything all that reputable either way.
