Drew Carey had an old bit way back where he was talking about purposely speeding in the rain so that a cop would have to get out of his car and get wet:

"Do you know why I pulled you over"?

"Yeah, Do you know why I was speeding?"

[–]joesumrall 18 points19 points ago

I seem to remember him having a similar joke along the lines of "Why did you blow that stop sign?" "Because I didn't see you."

[–]theMeticulous 1 point2 points ago

See, this is a much better joke as well, because a cop won't ever actually ask "Do you know why I'm standing here"

[–]lite951 112 points113 points ago

Reminds me of this news story:

http://abcnews.go.com/US/story?id=95836&page=1#.T7BRmp9YuKx

A man whose bid to become a police officer was rejected after he scored too high on an intelligence test has lost an appeal in his federal lawsuit against the city.

[–]Mikulicious 42 points43 points ago

This scares me Seeing as how i'm about to go to college for Criminal Justice to become a police officer... Fuck... If i don't get accepted... I'll probably go postal...

[–]ankyle 17 points18 points ago

Dont waste your time with a criminal justice degree, get something you can fall back on.

[–]Wargall 20 points21 points ago

Why would he buy pillows instead of going to college? That's just stupid.

[–]DarkestPassenger 5 points6 points ago

This this and this. In my area the police agencies actually prefer you have a degree in anything but CJ... It's a worthless degree for a cop...

[–]Specialed83 1 point2 points ago

Came here to say this. You can become a cop no matter what your degree, but you can't do much outside of law enforcement with a CJ degree.

[–]robinr22 2 points3 points ago

Yep. Hell, do a law degree, it'll probably be more valuable working as a cop!

[–]syncopal 47 points48 points ago

That should make you fit in with them better

[–]skankedout 16 points17 points ago

People go to college to be a police officer? Seriously I did not know that. All the guys I know that became cops just didn't go to college.

[–]FatCatFart 9 points10 points ago

Highway patrol requires a bachelors degree in my state.

[–]Mikulicious 15 points16 points ago

A lot of people don't i just want to do my best. I try lead by example and not fuck up. Hopefully i can get the job maybe lead other officer and make my streets a little safer from bad cops and criminals. I think i would make a great cop.

[–]skankedout 6 points7 points ago

Awesome. Good luck to you, because we definitely need more cops with your attitude.

[–]Mikulicious 1 point2 points ago

I've always wanted to be a cop, I had a rancid childhood... i want "Batman Voice:Justice!" lol Jokes aside I need this law enforcement job! Or my childhood was in vein! lol...

[–]fascination_street 13 points14 points ago

Don't inject childhood into your vein. Trust me.

[–]bradmin 1 point2 points ago

Hopefully English is not a requirement for doing a good job.

[–]Mikulicious 0 points1 point ago

Not really, welcome to america! :)

[–]slipperyfist 1 point2 points ago

You don't have to go to college, but for most government jobs you get an automatic pay increase for having a degree. Plus college is a great way to become more well rounded, regardless of what job you want.

[–]JWN6513 1 point2 points ago

community college.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

That's what I am currently doing. To hell with highway maintenance as a career.

[–]krunkjunker 0 points1 point ago

Every Police Dept. in my county requires a Degree, including the County Sheriff Dept. That being said, we have some of the highest paying PD's in the country here. But still, they ALL require degrees.

[–]Thizzz_face 0 points1 point ago

I'm currently about 3 years into this degree, so yeah. I graduated high school with honors and am currently on the dean's list.

[–]Jetmann114 0 points1 point ago

It can be very useful, most police officers want to either become a Marshall, an investigator, or a SWAT team member.

[–]MyronW 0 points1 point ago

I think some cities require an associates degree, but most don't require anything other than high school diploma. I seriously doubt that any place would require a full-on bachelors.

[–]g1zmo 2 points3 points ago*

My city's PD requires a 4-year degree for all positions.

[–]robinr22 0 points1 point ago

Fuck, I've got a law degree and I wouldn't qualify for that!

Wonder if they only set the bar so high because it means they get less applicants to sift through...

[–]cali555 6 points7 points ago

Wrong. New Jersey State Police requires a bachelors degree.

[–]rbysa 2 points3 points ago

Maybe he was applying for the wrong job? It's dangerous to hire someone that is overqualified for a position. In general they'll be unhappy and will make other's unhappy.

[–]Dyolf_Knip 3 points4 points ago

It wasn't a guy with 3 PhD's applying for the job here. He wasn't a genius-level Mensa scholar with aspirations of being a modern Renaissance Man. He was rather less than 2 standard deviations above average. There's probably 20 million Americans smarter than him, and judging by how much he exceeded their maximum score, probably another 20 million they'd still refuse to hire on that basis alone.

If cost of training is an issue, they would do well to bear in mind how expensive lawsuits can get, especially when you start filling your ranks with cops who couldn't think their way out of a paper bag.

[–]rbysa 1 point2 points ago*

It's perfectly acceptable to not hire someone because they are overqualified.

Also 2 standard deviations above the AVG would put him in the top 95% of people. What the fuck is someone like that applying for a street cop position?

Also from the article:

Jordan, a 49-year-old college graduate, took the exam in 1996 and scored 33 points, the equivalent of an IQ of 125. But New London police interviewed only candidates who scored 20 to 27, on the theory that those who scored too high could get bored with police work and leave soon after undergoing costly training

[–]Dyolf_Knip 1 point2 points ago

That's still 1 person in 20. And as I said, he was less than 2 SDs, and the maximum IQ lower still. So more like 1 in 10. And if you drop off the left half of the Bell Curve, then they're discounting at a stroke 20% of the eligible population.

those who scored too high could get bored with police work and leave soon after undergoing costly training

Because smart people can't ever become focused on tasks that would seem mind-numbingly tedious to other people? I'm a computer programmer; sometimes even I find my ability to stare at code all day amazing (and sometimes kind of a sad commentary about myself). If a smart person wants to work with you, someone who apparently would be by far the most intelligent person on your staff, you find a useful position for them. You don't just send them packing, telling them and the world "Thank you, but we're quite happy with the lunkheads getting us constantly slapped with lawsuits for their Neanderthal-esque behavior".

And anyway, that smacks of post-hoc rationalization to me. Does every police force have this same problem? Goodness, that would mean that all those TV shows about smart, clever, thoughtful policemen and detectives are lies, and that their ranks are deliberately filled with mediocre men and women. If this problem is unique to just this one precinct, perhaps it's either A) not really a problem or B) solvable if they actually cared to.

[–]AlwaysHere202 0 points1 point ago

I don't know exactly how it's different, but I have been turned down for jobs, where the interviewer has told me straight up that they believe I'm over qualified, and will be probably be leaving too quickly to justify the cost of training me.

Even where I got hired, they said they were hesitant because of that reason.

I'm not saying it's a good practice, and trying to be a cop is already showing an assumed long turn commitment (as opposed to Old Navy where I worked straight out of college)... but it is pretty standard practice.

[–]robinr22 0 points1 point ago

But surely the idea is that you don't remain a beat cop forever? I mean, you join up, get some experience and then, I don't know, become a detective or something. For bright people who want to advance, isn't it just a stepping stone?

[–]fozzyfreakingbear 2 points3 points ago

You and Ben Gibbard.

[–]hydrocarbon 2 points3 points ago

Hey, don't worry. Theres nothing wrong with being a postman.

[–]STJRedstorm 2 points3 points ago

That last statement is enough to become a cop in L.A.

[–]dietz203 1 point2 points ago

I am doing the same thing man, might as well get educated before I can apply when I am 21. I've talked to several police officers, they said just apply in every town you could possibly work and you will get brought in somewhere. Most of them say once you are in the system and get some real experience you can apply to other towns if you want. Anyways I wish you luck bud.

[–]Chase93 1 point2 points ago

Same here.

[–]flyingcaveman 1 point2 points ago

The post office is going to go bankrupt, you should go UPS or FedEX.

[–]ConstipatedNinja 0 points1 point ago

I suppose the postal office is an acceptable alternative if you can get a managerial position.

[–]DerpMatt 2 points3 points ago

Where is this shit. The police forces around here only want the smart people. yet I always see videos of cops that are fat stupid black women, or white douchebags.

[–]RedactedDude 0 points1 point ago

Same thing happened to me. I scored too high on the aptitude test and was told that they were afraid I'd get bored and quit after they invested time and money into training. The really amusing thing is that I took a picture of a police officer asleep in his cruiser in a parking lot across the street from my house, and showed it to the Admissions officer. I asked if the sleeping cop was more bored or less bored than they thought I would be.

[–]spamato 1 point2 points ago

Is that another quote or is this a common problem white chicks with uppity boobs face?

[–]leogg_lyl 318 points319 points ago

I would ram Sarah so hard.... That is all. I'm out.

[–]thumbtacforbreakfast 148 points149 points ago

For some reason I hate her, but I'd still ram.

[–]didaskaleinophobic 213 points214 points ago

I too, would randomly access her memory.

[–]TrainFan 59 points60 points ago

Dynamically.

[–]JakeSanchard 27 points28 points ago

I'd charge and discharge my capacitors all over her... if you know what I mean.

[–]DaftDweller 16 points17 points ago

I would put my quantum harmonizer in her photonic resonation chamber.

[–]TheoQ99 16 points17 points ago

But wouldn't that cause parabolic destabilization of the fission singularity?

[–]Decalis 7 points8 points ago

Yay! Really oblique reference that I actually get!

[–]BernzSed 2 points3 points ago

Giggity.

[–]InABritishAccent 4 points5 points ago

Sex, sex is what we're getting at.

Whatever you two are talking about, there's not enough sinusoidal deplaneration.

I'd fuck her

[–]itsdavid 8 points9 points ago

I'd access the shit out of it.

[–]acurtis85 2 points3 points ago

I'd insert my hard drive into her dock if you know what I mean.

[–]NomadofExile 7 points8 points ago

The term you are looking for is "hate fuck".

[–]stopdropandfapfapfap 31 points32 points ago

You hate her because she played a bitch in your childhood favorite movie, school of rock

[–]EbonPinion 62 points63 points ago

School of Rock. Childhood.

[–]NBAallstar 5 points6 points ago

One more - sorta nsfw

On a related note, in the new Sarah Polley film she's starring in called Take This Waltz Sarah will be doing a fully nude scene. Movie recently screened at Tribeca and will be On Demand May 25th, according to IMDb. Also heard the rest of the movie is pretty good.

[–]justguessmyusername 2 points3 points ago

Yeah it should be interesting because the nude scene is apparently mundane nudity and not sexualized.

[–]NBAallstar 2 points3 points ago

Works for me, she's smoking hot.

Sarah Polley has always done some good work, I was always a huge fan of Go and the Dawn of the Dead remake, will be very interested in seeing her directorial work.

edit: looks like her only other feature length director credits is for the film Away from Her (2006) and it got pretty good reviews.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

I ono some angles are good but this one she looks really manly, it's something with her brow structure/eyes/nose..jaw..

[–]epicGOPfail 15 points16 points ago

I would Shabbat Shalom Sarah Silverman so hard, she'd think I'm Goldman Sachs

[–]360walkaway 2 points3 points ago

Matt Damon beat you to it.

[–]Drewu271 18 points19 points ago

I have C's :(

[–]philb 21 points22 points ago

[–]Fusioncept 8 points9 points ago

That's a fucking scary thought.

[–]Drewu271 1 point2 points ago

I already have guns. Head for the hills!

[–]junkmale53 10 points11 points ago

Very funny. Never say this.

[–]wantmywings 4 points5 points ago

Actually, this is quite the misconception. NJ has just started hiring for police officers across the state and if you don't have a BA at the minimum, you won't even be looked at unless you're a vet.

[–]alwc37 0 points1 point ago

Where I work is much the same, and if you don't have a degree you can take courses at the local college and they pay for it. You also get a pay incentive for having more education.

[–]jakemyers7 226 points227 points ago

"mam do you know why you dont have a tv show anymore" "cause im not funny?"

[–]Killface17 216 points217 points ago

Really bad way to judge someones comedy, 'Two and a Half Men' is still on goddamn tv

[–]Mitz510 12 points13 points ago

The Big Bang Theory is aired in 3 different channels. That is terrible.

[–]gigantepicante 6 points7 points ago

[–]Lucavious 1 point2 points ago

Just showing the flawed comparison. On television != good television show and canceled != bad television show.

[–]modeliste 0 points1 point ago

I loved her show, listen to me clammer.

[–]nefastus 0 points1 point ago

[–]WildeNietzsche[!] 31 points32 points ago

[–]ScottCarmichael 4 points5 points ago

[–]hablahblah 22 points23 points ago

So does reddit.

[–]ScottCarmichael 8 points9 points ago

But no one is claiming that Reddit is good :P

[–]metallisch 5 points6 points ago

[–]Anglo-Saxon 35 points36 points ago

She wasn't saying this because she doesn't like cops, she's saying this because she hates that man, her sister's boyfriend.

[–]Frank_Anne 26 points27 points ago

Nope, this is from the first episode "Officer Jay." At this point, neither of the Silvermans had met Jay. This traffic stop is what led to her sister meeting Jay, and then they started dating.

[–]Anglo-Saxon 0 points1 point ago

Oh, well back to the circlejerk, then.

[–]SASALS3000 3 points4 points ago

Ugh, this clip is (was?) part of a commercial montage of funny quips from a variety of Comedy Network television shows and played ALL THE TIME for YEARS on CN. I can't even look at this without wanting to vomit

[–]headmustard 3 points4 points ago

I've never understood this. Cops make very decent wages and normally have awesome government (city, local or state) benefits.

[–]ccmotels 7 points8 points ago

I miss that show. Almost like a Mr Show spin off.

[–]slicedpan 19 points20 points ago

if C's gets me half pension tax free at age 40, im down

[–]FudgeBananaSwirl 5 points6 points ago

What state gives cops a tax exempt pension?

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

I know my dad's going to have a wicked-ass pension from the OPP once he's done there, the guy makes about $130'000 annually and will get 60% of that as pension after 30 years. 5 years to go!

[–]miltondave 2 points3 points ago

Canadian cops have it made eh?

[–]shsrunner330 2 points3 points ago

Other people's pussy is paying your dad?

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

I'm sorry, I have no idea what you're saying to me right now.

[–]NBAallstar 2 points3 points ago

The song 'you down with o.p.p.? yea you know me". OPP stands for 'other peoples pussy', as in women who are cheating on their SO. The reference is about 2 decades old.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

OPP is a song whose title stands for Other People's Pussy/Property. You down with it?

[–]slicedpan 0 points1 point ago

The best state

[–][deleted] 18 points19 points ago

[–]yep45 3 points4 points ago

Moving pictures with sounds! Classic.

[–]seven2eight2 2 points3 points ago

That was such a good show.

[–]fdott 13 points14 points ago

A good reply would be: because I chose to protect others.

[–]yep45 1 point2 points ago

Or "because I'm about to throw your ass in jail, ha!"

[–]cougarhart 28 points29 points ago

My father is a PHD and a police officer and most of the officers I know are quite intelligent.

[–]mknyan 7 points8 points ago

PhD in what?

[–]cougarhart 3 points4 points ago

Planktology

[–]not_enough_privacy 0 points1 point ago

night stick and pepper spray science

[–]ShaolinMasterKiller 44 points45 points ago

why??? I mean, why get a PhD and then be a police officer?

[–]cougarhart 39 points40 points ago

He wanted to help people.

[–]TheOneWhoKnocksBitch 14 points15 points ago

Idk why you're getting downvoted. I hate Reddit at times cuz of the "Every cop is an asshole" attitude. Honestly, if that's how it is, don't fucking call the police when you're in danger.

[–]bradygilg 10 points11 points ago

Curiosity about why a man would get a PHD before becoming a police officer has absolutely nothing to do with an "every cop is an asshole" attitude.

[–]cobrakai11 29 points30 points ago

He's being downvoted because it sounds ridiculous that someone spends a decade in college + working on getting a PHD, and then decides to become a cop to "help people". There's nothing wrong with being a cop, but it's a helluva lot of wasted time.

[–]kirbykiller 13 points14 points ago

who are others to tell someone else they wasted their time?

[–]cobrakai11 2 points3 points ago*

Nobody, but one guy asked why the other guy was being downvoted. I posited a possibility. Given the upvotes for the comment "why get a PhD and then be a police officer", I suggested that most people would see it as a waste of time getting a PhD to become a cop.

[–]Fusioncept 2 points3 points ago

You can help people and be practical. Idk why you are not getting upvoted more. Practicality isn't a bad thing. A soon as someone says they are helping people everyone jumps on and says, "well at least he is helping people now, it doesn't matter how he got there." Uh, yeah it does. He had a life before. He could have been helping MORE people if he became a cop sooner. Generosity and practicality aren't mutually exclusive.

Also, I just got Deja Vu btw.

[–]NautilusPompilius 3 points4 points ago

You do realize there are areas of law enforcement in which a PhD could help you, right? It's not "wasted time."

[–]TheOneWhoKnocksBitch 1 point2 points ago

Depends where you work. In some countries, cops do get paid. Also, not everyone does it for money.

[–]nefastus 0 points1 point ago

It doesn't depend on where he works. What he's getting at is that the decade in college and a fuckton of tuition that gets you a PHD isn't actually required to get a job as a cop; so if you're going to be a cop, getting a PHD first seems like a strange thing to do.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

So you like having cops with less education?

[–]wastedfluid 2 points3 points ago

There's no fucking point. Police are reactive, not proactive. Most people have negative attitudes of them based off traffic incidents. I guess you don't knock too many tickets eh?

[–]lpj5001 1 point2 points ago

Have you ever heard of community oriented policing?

[–]wastedfluid 0 points1 point ago

I have not.

[–]CariniGambarini 1 point2 points ago

I don't. The point is to not get shot/pepper sprayed/beaten/arrested.

[–]Yourmyfavoritedeputy 0 points1 point ago

We don't call the police around here.

[–]Allogistic 0 points1 point ago

Can't remember the last time a police officer helped me.

[–]robinr22 1 point2 points ago

Perhaps the man wanted to be a cop and also loves learnin' about shit.

Just because you can get in with low grades doesn't mean you should aim for the bottom. Plus it might actually help in his job.

[–]ShaolinMasterKiller 0 points1 point ago

I guess. But as someone who is about to apply to PhD programs it is a monumental undertaking, and most people strongly emphasized that you need to be 100% sure this is what you want.

It just seems to me like something must have happened to make him want to totally change his career and become a police officer - if you told me he had PhD in chemistry and then got involved in some sort of CSI shit I might find that believable...

[–]pgrily 1 point2 points ago

Some of them are legitimately good guys out there to make a difference. They aren't all power hungry idiots that couldn't make a college football team.

[–]ericn1300 -3 points-2 points ago

with a doctorate in philosophy, he's lucky to get that job

[–]davidreavis 3 points4 points ago

Someone doesn't know what they are talking about

[–]NautilusPompilius 6 points7 points ago

Screw the PhD, you have to be REALLY smart to be a comedian.

[–]cyberslick188 2 points3 points ago

Anecdotes are fun.

Every single janitor I know is an oil billionaire.

[–]mavriksfan11 1 point2 points ago

But populist rabble!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

I've found that there a huge difference between rural cops and inner city cops.

The latter ones are the assholes.

[–]jesuspal 1 point2 points ago

Show was really stupid but it did have moments.

[–]somerandomguy02 6 points7 points ago*

While funny, I have a cop friend who has a degree in Criminal Justice...

Edit: Why the downvotes? Was just pointing out that some cops are college educated.

[–]CariniGambarini 2 points3 points ago

A friend of mine was considering becoming a highway patrol officer a few years ago. They told him his IQ was too high and he might want to look into an administrative position. They are truly idiots.

[–]somerandomguy02 0 points1 point ago

haha, wow! That's crazy. My friend is striving for the State Bureau of Investigation but is a patrol officer among other things right now.

[–]Nebakanezzer 2 points3 points ago

fuck what anyone says about her. I bought 2 seasons of that show, she has some of the best one liners sometimes and it's always weird and creative.

[–]puremessage 2 points3 points ago

fuck what anyone says about her.

even the good things people say about her?

[–]h8bit 1 point2 points ago

ho ho ho, let's belittle and ridicule people who literally risk their lives to keep you safe, ho ho ho

[–]dj23hdz 0 points1 point ago

What show is she in?
