It's called axle wrap and with as much torque as a drag racer like this is likely to produce, it can be enough to rip the axle right off the spring packs (if sprung over, otherwise it could rip the spring packs off of the frame), traction bars, long arms, or anything else the axles might be attached to.

[–]jettrscga 141 points142 points ago

Those words sound like bad.

[–]cebedec 29 points30 points ago

Several thousand $ bad.

[–]jakemyers7 6 points7 points ago

scrap yard bad

[–]dillypo 3 points4 points ago

Nah a car like that is mostly aftermarket parts anyway. Everything that broke was, or should have been upgraded already. It'd just be replacing those again.

[–]Fearlessleader85 0 points1 point ago

No, what you do with that car is throw away the ruined shell and put all your aftermarket parts on a new one that you bought for $400 that you bought without a motor. Then you beef shit up so it doesn't happen again.

[–]mod_critical 18 points19 points ago

My dad used to drag race and he'd always tote me along as a kid. When I was around 8 I saw something like this, but where the suspension was much better prepared to handle the torque. The body of the car, however, was not. This was a heavily modified bracket 1 car that I think was a Camero, but I'm not certain. Anyway at about the 100 ft mark the roof started to ripple and then the windshield blew out! All from the twisting force from the engine.

Apparently the guy had just some work on the engine and it was only one of the first few runs afterward. It wasn't even a race, just a time trial. Poor guy.

Also witnessed a car pole vault over 6 feet in the air. The torque snapped the drive shaft at the transmission end and it dropped onto the pavement, causing the car to get flung into the air! Cars in that class are supposed to have brackets installed to catch a falling drive shaft, but, you know, people are dumb.

[–]aari13 7 points8 points ago

Drive shaft loop. It'll also prevent a broken drive shaft from ripping through the fuselage and maiming the passengers.

[–]HyzerFlip 0 points1 point ago

I saw the remnants of that happening in a race car once, driver was lucky it got pushed towards the passenger side.

[–]Dstanding 4 points5 points ago

Not quite the same thing, but this Supra managed to flex its body enough to blow its own doors off.

[–]gurboura 0 points1 point ago

I met the Titan guys, along with Jessica, when I lived in Orlando. They used to frequent some of the local car meets, great group of people, always willing to answer questions about the Supra's. Jessica's Supra was stunning.

[–]FetidFeet 4 points5 points ago

I think the pole vaulting car thing was on Mythbusters. They reenacted it.

OK, now is when I tell myself Nice Story bro.

[–]mod_critical 6 points7 points ago

Here's a video of a car pole vaulting on its drive shaft: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k9DVlnX0jIc

That guy got up in the air 3-4 feet it looks like. The axle didn't break off on the one I saw, and he bucked up quite a bit higher. It's not something you see very often because the track will ban you if they find out you don't have a catch.

[–]Dstanding 4 points5 points ago

Props to the other racer for checking if the drive was OK.

[–]j-random 1 point2 points ago

Most tracks have tech inspections, where dumb people get told they can't run because their stupidity might hurt others.

[–]Puddindoobop 0 points1 point ago

Dude, I had that happen to me in my 89 Jeep Wrangler going 80 on 287 in NJ. I got so lucky I didn't hit a pot hole! My ass jumped in the air but I never pole vaulted, was able to safely steer to the left shoulder and stop. I didn't even have time to get to the right. It wasn't until I got out and saw what happened that I realized how lucky I was that I didn't flip!

[–]chrissssssssssssssss 43 points44 points ago

You are incorrect. What happened in this video is the ladder bar mounts were poorly welded to the axle tubes and broke off. You can see the bars hanging with the broken off mounts still attached to them. Even a low horsepower car that doesn't launch hard would eventually have caused this to happen.

I actually think its kind of dumb to change the factory rear suspension setup in a 82-2002 camaro/firebird in favor of a crude ladder bar setup but to each their own. To not only change it but to also change it poorly, this guy got what was coming to him.

[–]brodie21 12 points13 points ago

Not a mechanic but I see that the large tires hit the wheel-well when he accelerated. It seems to me that the force of the wheels against the wheel-well was what ripped the axle off. I dont think you can weld strong enough to counteract the kind of power the engine puts into the tires.

[–]Rangourthaman_ 8 points9 points ago

You are correct, I saw the video of this on www.jalopnik.com once. The team tending to the car explained it like this.

[–]RobinBennett 1 point2 points ago

You just need to make the welds stronger than the tyres or wheel-well.

[–]brodie21 -1 points0 points ago

I dont think you would want that. What if the driveshaft broke and tore through the floorboards?

[–]i_suck_at_reddit 0 points1 point ago*

Any reputable drag strip will require driveshaft loops if your car is fast enough, protecting you from injury if the driveshaft breaks.

Under ~14 seconds for slicks, and ~13 seconds for regular tires they should not let you race without them.

Driveshaft loops are generally pretty cheap, so it's not a huge deal.

[–]ReplaceSelect 3 points4 points ago

I had a 93 Z28 and an 01 WS6, but I never heard of people changing to that kind of rear set up. Large torque/hp cars seemed to go with a large rear axle. What would even be the advantage to going with a ladder bar (in theory)?

[–]NoobisPrime 8 points9 points ago

Words about cars.

[–]Phreakhead 1 point2 points ago

Just imagine its a Linux distro where you are playing an old 486 game for DOS. The CPU is too fast for what the game loop was originally hardcoded for, so the game runs too fast and all your lemmings fall off the cliff in several seconds.

I never understood why game designers hardcoded their loop delay constants when it could be easily done with a real timer variable instead.

[–]NoobisPrime 2 points3 points ago

Thanks, now it all makes sense. Originally I thought I was car-retarded, but it turns out I'm just regular retarded.

[–]GunHungLo 0 points1 point ago

words about cars contrary to your words, accompanied by an anecdote about cars

[–]NoobisPrime 1 point2 points ago

Numbers and letters lending to my credibility on cars. Reference to my numbers and letters validating my previous words about cars. Attack to your lack of numbers and letters to validate your words about cars.

[–]GunHungLo -1 points0 points ago

ur mom

[–]zeno0771 2 points3 points ago

F-bodies were meant to actually go around corners. WS6's and most Z's did a better job, but they were still all solid-axle cars. Ladder bars are for straight-line traction. Putting them on a car that's mostly street-driven is at best a waste of money unless you do an absurd amount of street-racing.

[–]chrissssssssssssssss 0 points1 point ago

Ladder bars are a somewhat primitive drag race only suspension setup. They are very common in the bracket racing world because they are relatively cheap, easy to adjust, and work well at keeping a car consistent. You wouldn't want to drive on the street with them because by design they force the rear to stay level... If you were to go over a pot hole or other uneven surface your suspension will bind up.

The factory rear suspension setup on those cars, known as a torque arm suspension, is actually very effective in the drag racing world and some of the fastest cars in the "stock suspension" classes are camaros/firebirds. I built a 1988 Camaro that has consistently put down 1.51 60ft times at the track with absolutely no rear suspension modifications... For those not familiar with drag racing, that's 0-60mph in about 2.5 seconds.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points ago

Your car is no where near the same class as these guys. These are drag cars producing 1000+ hp.

[–]TheHerbalGerbil 2 points3 points ago

These guys are also apparently bleeding idiots.

[–]ReplaceSelect 0 points1 point ago

There were plenty of people in the forums that modified them to get up to that HP.

[–]throwaway-o -1 points0 points ago

There are companies that will change your suspension to improve handling dramatically. I own an 82 T/A and I can attest to the fact that, if ANYTHING, the T/A and all F-Bodies have horrible handling.

[–]g1zmo 0 points1 point ago

That's pretty much exactly what I said. The long arms (or ladder bars) didn't break off by themselves -- it happened when the tires started turning which caused the axle tube to want to rotate (aka axle wrap) and snapped the welds.

[–]perb123 5 points6 points ago

[–]StonedSuperhero 1 point2 points ago

nice

[–]enazatol 0 points1 point ago

should have 4 linked it.

[–]Lamar_Scrodum -1 points0 points ago

well theres your problem right there

[–]SniperTooL 117 points118 points ago

Looks like a problem with the alternator.

[–]einbierbitte 97 points98 points ago

Nope. Definitely the blinker fluid...

[–]SniperTooL 19 points20 points ago

Nothing a bit of elbow grease won't fix. Shit, get the apprentice to buy more elbow grease while they're out.

[–]Nick2the4reaper7 5 points6 points ago

Don't let him forget the headlight fluid this time.

[–]j-random 1 point2 points ago

And a box of sky hooks. Oh, and a spool of tram cable, we're almost out.

[–]Nick2the4reaper7 0 points1 point ago

And one more thing. We're out of curveballs. We need another box of em.

[–]newtothelyte 0 points1 point ago

A spool? We are going to need at least 7. Also, we will probably need some tire wires and a carburetor gaiter.

[–]looksfamiliar 1 point2 points ago

He's already gone out for a long weight. They must be taking their time.

[–]rolfo87 0 points1 point ago

I actually heard a mechanic said to a lady once: "it's the headlight fluid, that's why you're having issues with your car"

[–]l00pee 8 points9 points ago

Obviously a muffler bearing issue. Noob.

[–]RealDeuce 1 point2 points ago

I'm no expert, but it sure looks like an overextended piston return spring to me.

[–]darthnuri 0 points1 point ago

We'll need the skulldriver pistonfork to fix this!

[–]Captainpatch 25 points26 points ago

He probably just needs to top off his antifreeze.

[–]suppermick 2 points3 points ago

I'd put my money on the power steering pump.

[–]benjgvps 9 points10 points ago

[–]From_A_Movie 5 points6 points ago

The capacitor is out of flux.

[–]SniperTooL 7 points8 points ago

For flux sake, not again!

[–]Blamemeta -1 points0 points ago

He really eight that joke.

[–]vegetaman 3 points4 points ago

Nah, it just needs a new head gasket and air filter.

[–]antonchigurgh -1 points0 points ago

Clearly he needs to re-route the exhaust flow distributor valve.

[–]mcon87 248 points249 points ago

I'm no mechanic, but that's not supposed to happen.

[–]majorpenalty 202 points203 points ago

I am a mechanic, and I can confirm that this is not supposed to happen.

[–]selfish_king 90 points91 points ago

I met a Mechanic once and I can confirm this

[–]Garg27 90 points91 points ago

I've seen the film The Mechanic and why did this not cause explosions?

[–]Arystulaim 42 points43 points ago

It was not directed by Michael Bay.

[–]Garg27 6 points7 points ago

There are still explosions. Although not as many as the amount of boom mics that dip into shot.

[–]VisualAssassin 0 points1 point ago

As a boom mic operator , I can confirm this.

[–]suspect161 6 points7 points ago

I am not Michael Bay and I approve this

[–]Rangourthaman_ 2 points3 points ago

I approve of you not being Micheal Bay.

[–]cyberjedi 2 points3 points ago

I have a mechanical pencil and yup this isn't supposed to happen.

[–]f1ncher 3 points4 points ago

I have listened to Mike and the Mechanics and I can confirm that All I Need is a Miracle is a great song.

[–]mikeno1 8 points9 points ago

Hmm, really? I'm starting to understand why I lost my job as a mechanic.

[–]Breathing_Balls 4 points5 points ago

You lost your job because you were always fucking tired.

[–]Phreakhead 0 points1 point ago

Didn't even have to grease reddit up for that one.

[–]Breathing_Balls 13 points14 points ago

What, that you met a mechanic, once?

[–]selfish_king 11 points12 points ago

Yes

[–]Jerlko 1 point2 points ago

I am literate, and I can confirm that that's what he wrote.

[–]AssCommander 0 points1 point ago

As a mother, I can support this claim.

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points ago

Duct tape.

[–]Breathing_Balls 0 points1 point ago

I have seen that video. Nice. nudge

[–]TheBokonon 4 points5 points ago

I'm mcon87's mechanic.

It looks fine; just drive it normally for a few days and give me a call if it's still happening after that.

[–]mcon87 1 point2 points ago

this is why i trust my mechanic.

[–]flyersfan018 1 point2 points ago

My uncle Kool-Aid is a mechanic and I can confirm this.

[–]sneijder 0 points1 point ago

I'm Mike, I asked my mechanics. They confirmed this is not supposed to happen. Downtown at least, what happens uptown is a bit vague.

[–]Bitter_Idealist 0 points1 point ago

I don't see how you can be so sure.

[–]helpfuldan 107 points108 points ago

I see the problem. Some car shit broke and that broke more car shit. Then the big part of the car shit came off. Shits all wrong. Wrench nut rod cam piston oil tube axle seal oring lube n shit.

[–]mamajamerson 21 points22 points ago

Thank you. I read the other explanations and I was so confused. Now I get it.

[–]alfabetsoop 4 points5 points ago

It says on your chart that you're fucked up. You talk like a fag, and your shit's all retarded.

[–]Mr_Zarika -1 points0 points ago

There you go with that fag talk again.

[–]deadcell9156 4 points5 points ago

Idiocracy reference, people. I thought of the same thing when I read the comment.

[–]throwaway-o 3 points4 points ago

Nobody got your reference :-(

[–]Mr_Zarika 1 point2 points ago

Clearly all their shit's retarded.

[–]Blackwargreymon 20 points21 points ago

"Hey, Jim, it's Righty-Loosey, Lefty-Tighty, right?"

[–]Secrete_Persona 1 point2 points ago

Why can't I read this like it's written?

[–]mamajamerson 0 points1 point ago

same here

[–]T0tai 14 points15 points ago

Too much torque?

[–]irocksandals 21 points22 points ago

I drive a Honda what is this torque you speak of?

[–]turnipsoup 8 points9 points ago

I ride a Honda; torque there is abound! You clearly need to remove two of your wheels as with op's post!

[–]pissuoff 0 points1 point ago

Agreed. Me thinks he needs an h22.

[–]turnipsoup 0 points1 point ago

I was thinking more a CBR1000RR; 82.6lbf-ft of torque is rather a lot when the whole package is only 200kg.

[–]TheHerbalGerbil 0 points1 point ago

I drive a Hyundai. What is a torque; can I pick it up at Wal*Mart?

[–]pissuoff 0 points1 point ago

Is it a Genesis? No? Oh, then it brings shame to the Hyundai name.

[–]cyberslick188 5 points6 points ago

Gripped and ripped.

[–]joko123 24 points25 points ago

Back wheels are for squares.

[–]cehak 29 points30 points ago

I think he was just two-tired to continue.

[–]turtlesquirt 13 points14 points ago

What a drag

[–]lonewolfe1 8 points9 points ago

I'd say it was kind of a rip off

[–]2shotsofwhatever 1 point2 points ago

This thread is about to burn out.

[–]Mr_Zarika 0 points1 point ago

I'm exhausted.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points ago

This pun thread was terrible. hubcap.

[–]Mr_Zarika 0 points1 point ago

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

[–]JoSl 2 points3 points ago

It's more legit when the back tires ARE squares.

[–]727Super27 0 points1 point ago

I read that as "back wheels are supposed to be squares" and was like ...wat for a couple seconds.

[–]biggmclargehuge 2 points3 points ago

that's a lot of words to accidentally insert

[–]mamajamerson 0 points1 point ago

Just requires a spot of lube first.

[–]Sarcasm_Llama 1 point2 points ago

Canada

[–]obomba 6 points7 points ago

The whole video.

[–]_masterBlaster_ 1 point2 points ago

thank you! much better than the gif.

[–]Poopontheshose 3 points4 points ago

quick change rear end.

[–]moltencheese 4 points5 points ago

This is the sound I hear when I watch that.

[–]stanker4 6 points7 points ago

Jesus Christmas, a Lego car would hold up better than that shit.

[–]ctk22 37 points38 points ago

looks like there wasn't enough clearance in the wheel wells for the rear tires. when the back end squatted, the tires hit the body, and tore the whole axle out.

[–]tecmec 38 points39 points ago

Highly unlikely. You can see the torque arm was still attached to the car, but had come unattached from the axle housing. This was probably the first thing to break, followed by the LCAs when the rubber hit the wheel wells and the axle housing itself started to rotate.

If you were familiar with suspension setups, you would know that a properly set-up drag car should have an instant-center such that the rear suspension does not squat. In fact, the rear suspension should actually do the opposite. And if you watch this gif closely, you can see that it does not squat (though the front end lifted a bit).

[–]Mikeyone77 50 points51 points ago

[–]lost_cosmonaut 6 points7 points ago

yeah, wheel wells don't snap u joints that often

[–]betaboxx 12 points13 points ago

Exactly

Sheet metal vs tubes and rods is no contest. The tires/sheet metal would rip apart first.

[–]Breathing_Balls 10 points11 points ago

Spoiler alert!

[–]JayDee240 4 points5 points ago

I thought it looked more like the axle let loose before it even squatted enough for the tires to rub. Maybe just weak u bolts and/or traction bars?

[–]Tacota 0 points1 point ago

Lol no. Hitting the body would not supply enough friction. Would just break body parts or just rub really bad. Was just ridiculous axle wrap. Problem had a crappy or no traction bar.

[–]Hsn102198 3 points4 points ago

Well there's your problem.

[–]X_GAMBIT_M 4 points5 points ago

"Why the fuck do I want a caravan that's got no fucking wheels?"

[–]MrBrawn 11 points12 points ago

Check the turn signal fluid. It's likely low.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

That's not it you dumb idiot, clearly his muffler bearings are out of line.

[–]thatGman 1 point2 points ago

It ain't the blinker fluid the wobblelater shaft dun got loose there. mmhmmm.

[–]MrBrawn 1 point2 points ago

Maybe. Better check the muffler bearings to be sure.

[–]SlugsOnToast 1 point2 points ago

Recapitulate the hyglutenator.

[–]pissuoff 0 points1 point ago

Brokeback wobble shaft.

[–]ScienceBrah 4 points5 points ago

[–]IAMBEINGLOUDD 2 points3 points ago

Have you tried turning it on and off

[–]Harpdarpharpdarp 1 point2 points ago

Reminds me of the podracers in Episode I.

[–]IG-64 5 points6 points ago

I think you're thinking of the wrong George Lucas movie.

[–]JumpTheFence 1 point2 points ago

a bit of duct tape and he can try again

[–]lazerkitty00 1 point2 points ago

oh yeah!!!....ohhhhhhh

[–]Grand_Theft_Audio 1 point2 points ago

This guy is lucky that didn't happen at 90 miles an hour.

[–]All-American-Bot 2 points3 points ago

(For our friends outside the USA... 90 miles -> 144.8 km) - Yeehaw!

[–]Freddie_AppsHero 1 point2 points ago

What makes this is the way the rear wheels come to a pathetic little stop behind the rest of the car.

[–]grachi 1 point2 points ago

Kinda like what happened the first time I had sex.

Over right as it started.

[–]marishtar 1 point2 points ago

Should've invested in headlight fluid. Magical stuff, really.

[–]Dirtydog554 0 points1 point ago

[–]snoopyh42 0 points1 point ago

Huh. Maybe that bolt was important after all?

[–]dongpal 0 points1 point ago

But now then 10 sec later when hes up to 300km/h or something

[–]Jonnny 0 points1 point ago

I like how the back wheels roll up to the chassis and give it a little last push, like it's giving it its last strength and saying "I must do what...I...can!"

[–]EvanSenpai 0 points1 point ago

So who won?

[–]DrStephenPoop 0 points1 point ago

Worst. Autobot. Ever.

[–]AHorseNamedPickle 0 points1 point ago

Somebody went Head over Wheels!

[–]Hypericales 0 points1 point ago

Well I'd be damned if some person's legs fell off too and kicked them in the ass.

[–]oldbodypit 0 points1 point ago

Haha, that's my car. Don't burnout with the parking brake on in a rwd car.

[–]thistle172 0 points1 point ago

OH, is THAT where that bolt goes?

[–]therightclique 0 points1 point ago

And that's why you don't buy a car from a Pikey.

[–]dwheel2010 0 points1 point ago

I don't always lose the race....,but when I do I really fuck shit up

[–]ehlu15 0 points1 point ago

You can buff that out.

[–]dragonbreath1 0 points1 point ago

Stop, drop, and roll he wasn't even on fire.

[–]goldenpeon 0 points1 point ago

Oh my torque!

[–]Myra12 0 points1 point ago

The car unexpectedly over judged the tires as if they will follow it.

[–]Bundleofjooy 0 points1 point ago

I imagine this is what a transformer with down syndrome would look like.

[–]throwaway-o 0 points1 point ago

I have the same car, and I can attest and verify that the car doesn't have that power when it's stock.

It's still plenty powerful though. And fun to drive. When you're not tryiing to make turns at high speeds. Then it's terrifying and almost a certain death.

Trans Ams. Built for one thing*, and one thing only: going fucking fast in a straight line.

* They do come with pussy magnets. So it isn't strictly "one thing only".

[–]X_Cody 0 points1 point ago

I drive a red 1987 camaro and I concur, mine handles very well taking turns at high speeds. The way it hugs the ground helps the handling

[–]throwaway-o 0 points1 point ago

Mine doesn't handle taking turns at high speeds AT ALL.

[–]TheHerbalGerbil 0 points1 point ago

Gotta love when motorheads mess up big-time.
