The metal will be connected to the earth pin so any short will blow the fuse. It probably makes it safer than plastic night light plugs.

    The metal should be grounded, in which case its about as safe as electronics can be. Any short circuit would short to the metal casing. Plastic electronics are actually far more dangerous and require much more siginficant safety engineering.

    I imagine there'd be some sort of insulation between the prongs carrying the power, and the brass. Then you'd just have to make sure all the electronics switching the 120V AC to 3-5V DC inside are also insulated. Nothing some electrical tape wouldn't fix.

    Might want to be careful if you're considering making one yourself... It also makes you wonder how the tap is mounted, and if it's sturdy. My guess is lots and lots of hot glue - the lifeblood of hobbyists everywhere.

    As an electrician, I don't think this is safe. Mixing vanity with electricity is always a bad idea. If somehow, the outside makes contact with the inside on this shabby piece of junk, you're going to get bit. But hey, this is reddit, I bet it would do some of you a lot of good.

    It does. Did you not see OP's link to Etsy? Here you are. it can be purchased for $47. The drop is an add-on, but I'm sure you could manufacture it yourself for a small sum and some hot glue or acrylic.
