Old argument is old. Lil' Wayne is apart of the 1% of the music artists that make millions. The little artists actually do lose money to piracy.

It's hard because they wouldn't achieve the same range of distribution through traditional online retail like iTunes and such. They do lose money in sales, but done well, they can also create a lot of buzz across a much wider distance (very useful for tours).

I'm all for buying indie artists, but sadly (although fair enough) some people find that a price is just one barrier too many for certain artists. It's a toss up between wide exposure or actual earnings. The buying process involves many decisions, and cutting one out can greatly increase reach

Did you know that if we didn't pirate things, they'd also get less money? A lot of people only buy things because they've seen it online somewhere. I know people who wouldn't have bought lots of movies if they hadn't seen them online.

I know I saw it here in Reddit. But the pirate bay did a study where most Indie artists and artists that are just starting out love it when people download their stuff. It helps them get popular.

Besides the fact that not all artists can sustain losses like the top few, why do people justify theft by saying it doesn't "harm" the person they are stealing from? How can you possibly justify this?

when u pirate music, u hurt the industry. people such as a non specific audio engineering student has to then go into a field that is making only a much smaller fraction of what it used to make and therefore can not make enough money to pay off his student loans for a very long time. a loss of a billion dollars doesn't really hurt the artist but it slowly takes more and more money from people within the industry who are already struggling in the slowly recovering economy.
