My old rat had a tumor there, we had it removed and it sat in a little jar on top of the fridge for years. Looked like a weird walnut.

Usually, the tumors are unsightly, but they can still live on pain-free. Most of them are benign. But, when the rat looks like its suffering, you'll want to do something.

You can always get a pair of new baby rats to slowly introduce to the older one.

We just got a baby to keep our younger rat company when our old rat dies, in the past when one died the other would die soon after because it got super lonely so we've had to start a perpetual cycle of adding a baby when the oldest rat looked like its health was failing. Our oldest is pushing 4 years old and she had a mammary tumor removed about a year ago.

We haven't had one killed yet, our rats are really well socialized and get a ton of attention and exercise so they're pretty laid back and chill and when you introduce new rats you put them in a scent neutral territory(the bathtub is usually a good bet) and you cover the new one and the old ones in something sweet(we usually use applesauce) to mask their scents and they start grooming it off one another and bonding.

This technique has worked for my rats 3 times now but my friend tried it with her rat and it went really horribly. To be honest though her rat was kind of evil. It immediately felt threatened and killed the baby within seconds of being together but it had been all alone for about a year.

They puff out the fur and hunch their back. Sometimes, they chatter their teeth, though they also do it slightly different when they're happy, so you have to watch their other behaviors. They also push each other (or you) away with their fists or back legs when they want to be left alone. Very rarely, do pet rats actually bite with force or an attempt to hurt each other/you.

      That's really more of an homage than a repost. The joke is that his brother decided to mail him a joke he saw on reddit, rather then send him a real message. It's cute and it's better done than the original. Doesn't seem like karmawhoring at all.

      But really, why does it matter if people shoot for karma? I keep being told karma doesn't matter, yet a lot of people get indignant and pissed off when people get karma for things that they "don't deserve." Seems like a mixed message to me.

      Edit: To illustrate, I think complaining about people getting karma is like a couple siblings complaining about who got the bigger glass of water. It seriously doesn't matter. Just go to the tap and fill your cup.

      An on-the-go shower. Fill a tupperware container with dish soap and ice. Let freeze. The end result is a puck with frozen soapy water on one side and clean water on the other. The idea is that you throw it in your cooler and you can shower after a game of something or other if you dont want to go home and shower.

      It works exactly as well as you might think and thats why we hate it.

      Reposts are GREAT when they are funny and reposted at a decently long interval.

      When that's not the case, they suck ass. It's the length of the interval that matters, when combined with how funny it is.

      The interval needs to be lengthened with each iteration of the repost, or this method will fail.

      Reposts are not pointless - even putting something on the frontpage generally only guarantees less than half of all Redditors will see it. Thus, for the rest of Reddit it is not a repost at all, but as fresh as it was to those who enjoyed it the first time. If it's truly a pointless repost - as in, everyone's seen it and no-one wants to see it again - it'll not get the upvotes it needs to reach the frontpage anyway. A repost reaching the frontpage shows that it deserved to be posted again, because that many people either hadn't seen it or appreciated seeing it again.

            Yes. I suppose that's part of why I now feel like it'd be too painful for me to adopt any rat companions in need of homes. Someone fresher, with fewer dead friends can help out, I think. A rat's maximum lifespan is 2.5-3 years, long enough to really love 'em, and also long enough to feel heartbroken when they go. They are very people-ish.

            I have 2 pet rats taking a nap next to me right now. Here's they are doing that a few weeks ago. They potty train themselves, I even taught my old ones how to spin. They also came when called, would stand up, and would go to certain objects on command. They honestly bring me endless joy

            They only live 2-3 years and it is heartbreaking when they die. I know of someone who just had a 2 litters in Indiana if you're interested.

            I got two rats, one of which came home from the pet store pregnant. We ended up having seven rats. It was really interesting seeing how their personalities developed and how they interacted, because they really did have distinct personalities. They was much more interesting than my hamster, who was just kind of a dick.

            Same here. I got two brothers from a breeder, and they fight alot hhaha. The winner is usually whoever jumped the other one first, but they best is when they just stop fighting and go back to normal business like it was nothing.

            Yeah it's a funny thing isn't it? Mine seem to fight all the time but it's never clear that one is dominant over the other - sometimes one wins or sometimes the other. With mine is seems to be that the one who wins is the one who is least in the mood for it!

            Definitely. Have you noticed how if you pet them while they're close to each other, they'll start randomly brawling?

            Rat combat is the best. I remember one day, my black rat was on top of a laundry hamper and looking down. He heard and smelled the white one coming, and waited until he was just past him before jumping down, pushing him on his back and pinning him.

            Rats are generally very social, they enjoy the company of other rats as well as people and have very distinct personalities. Syrian (golden) hamsters, are solitary, and also very recently domesticated, so they are sometimes less social with people, though I have seen plenty of friendly hamsters. I used to raise both as pets, and would generally recommend rats over hamsters, though personally I am a rodent lover in general. :) But if you're looking for a rodent pet, I would definitely recommend a same sex pair of rats.

            Actually, from a purely animal behavioral point of view, there was a winner and a loser in the little encounter.

            The rat with the nose higher than the others who takes the lead with the break up is the dominate rat.

            Actual Science: It's known as "boxing" and is essentially a defensive strategy in a fight. As long as both rats are able to remain nose to nose with each other it is impossible for one rat to bite/attack the other rats stomach and or rump.

            Usually it is the first step in an actual "fight" but it rarely progresses beyond that as the rats usually prefer not to fight.

            I've seen a few legitimate rat "fights" and it's never really a fight at all, if they're in for the kill they know to go straight for the spine and it's over in a matter of seconds.

            I have looked at many of your posts, irepostoldtoplinks, and would argue that you are, in fact, creating OC. The image or the joke that you are publishing may be reused, but in most of your threads someone notices your name and comments on it. In those comments people often have serious discussions on the nature of reposts and how they can be avoided by going to smaller sub-reddits.             i worked on some research for an animal model of ocd after we gave our rats antidepressants half of them spent all their time in that last position - reared up, paws almost touching, very still - occasionally slowly pantomiming a fight. cutest little ocd rats.

            I remember when I was a kid and had rats. They would often get in little scuffles and my mom would tap on the cage while telling to stop. They would immediately freeze, often with one still on top of the other, staring at her. Then after a couple seconds they would walk away, looking like they no idea what just happened.

            I know! They were the less dominant rats. So when the more dominant rat came by (the brown one in the background) the rats started fighting with each other so the dominant rat wouldn't beat up on them. Thats why they stopped so suddenly when the brown rat started walking away. It actually a behavior called nosing or something like that. A rat wont attack another rat already fighting. Sorry, I'm an animal planet watching animal fan. I pick up some strange things.
