[–]Alriteyeah 4 points5 points ago

[–]LowLevelRebel[S] 5 points6 points ago

[–]Alriteyeah 1 point2 points ago

[–]LowLevelRebel[S] 1 point2 points ago

I have the blu ray set of all 6 original movies :D

I've never met anyone who really loves Trek and is overly fond of "The One With the Whales." It was the 80s equivalent of the Abrams film in that it was Star Trek for people who don't really care for Star Trek.

yeah just to like reach to people with having a "wow it is happening like NOW not in the future" similar to every single hollywood movie always happening in big american cities and huge well known buildings being destroyed, as if alien would come to earth and like "dude we should blow up the white house and the empire state build cause.. you know they love that shit"

I'm a deep die-hard classic Trek fan, and I love it. My wife and I quote it constantly. It is the one with the most mass-appeal, but also has some excellent character background and it remembered that Trek has a sense of humor.

[–]daeedorian 0 points1 point ago*

Well, you'd be the first I've encountered. I'm all for humor in Star Trek, and I quite enjoy parodies of Star Trek, but ST IV is a canon parody of Star Trek, and I just can't bring myself to love that.

To me, Star Trek is a space drama--its strongest moments were piqued in emotion, not necessarily levity. When I think of the moments that make the franchise great, I recall Spock's death or Picard's assimilation--I don't really get nostalgic over "Well, double-dumbass on you!" or Vulcan-nerve-pinch-on-the-punk-rocker.

I don't hate Voyage Home, I just consider it a pretty weak entry among TOS films. It's amusing, yes, but it's not very strong Star Trek, if you consider Star Trek's most powerful moments.

[–]KirbyW 0 points1 point ago

I have to disagree that it is a parody. There are some grand character moments that give depth and history, and that is not encountered in a parody. A parody is also often insulting, and I cannot see where this is. It keeps continuity, and after 3 very serious films, the franchise needed a laugh. Emotion doesn't have to be dark to be poignant. Tribbles is often cited within the top 5 episodes.. And everyone remembers Picard dressed as Robin Hood. And I do consider it Strong Trek... it has science fiction thematics while remembering that the humanity of Trek needs to be more important than the technical gibberish. And it broadened the audience, which is always a good thing.

You're of course entitled to your positive opinion of the film, it just didn't represent the elements of the franchise that most appeal to me.

The same goes for tribbles and Q's Robin Hood. I don't love Star Trek for its comedic value.

Since 1995, I haven't been able to look at James Cromwell without instantly thinking of Farmer Hogget.

[–]KirbyW 0 points1 point ago

He'll always be "Stretch" Cunningham from All in The Family to me.

[–]moejike 2 points3 points ago

That is one of the best Gifs I've seen in a while. Well played!

[–]TheAdoringFan 4 points5 points ago

Oh yeah because it's so important, imagine not getting the maximum amount of imaginary points as possible.

[–]LowLevelRebel[S] 0 points1 point ago

Exactly! Although somehow it's still my cake day...so I'm confused.

[–]SirBumcakes 2 points3 points ago

[–]Leelad 1 point2 points ago

Did the same a few days ago. Couldn't find an image good enough for karma whoring.

Decided that it's best to weep to myself and wait until next year.

[–]drakemac333 1 point2 points ago

[–]twistedtorsion 2 points3 points ago

New here, What the heck is a cake day?

[–]BeondTheGrave 3 points4 points ago

Every year on the anniversery if the registration of an account, a little cake appears after the posters name. Traditionally, it use to be cool to give people sympathy karma for the day, to make it extra special. Redditors generally use this as an escuse to farm karma on their cakeday, as it can be expected that a post will get the all important first upvotes from riding off sympathy karma.

[–]SithSquirrel 2 points3 points ago

I really can't stand "cakeday" posts with no substance. But if they work it into a clever joke somehow I'm generally okay with it.

But seriously, screw cakedays.

[–]asstits -2 points-1 points ago

I'm new too, somebody just called me a 'karma whore' - what is that?

[–]BeondTheGrave -1 points0 points ago

Its when you spread ur cheeks so everyone can give you their karma.

[–]ryanmmm 0 points1 point ago

[–]BeondTheGrave -1 points0 points ago
