  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

So, Andre was supposedly 7'4" and Wilt 7'1".

Is it perspective that Wilt looks several inches taller in that pic? But since Andre is closer to the camera, wouldn't that make him look even taller? Heels maybe?

I kind of remember back in the day that Wilt never really let himself be measured for height. Is it possible he was actually taller than what he is listed at?

A few things: Andre had severe back problems, so he rarely stood up straight. Also, I don't think Andre is too far in the foreground here. take a look at his feet in relation to Wilt's. His right foot is pretty much parallel to Wilt's feet. His head is at most 6" closer to the lens, which isn't going to affect the perspective too much from this angle. I think it looks like he's more in the foreground because he's wider than Wilt and therefore looks more proportionate standing next to him.

Still, you bring up a good point. Andre must have been slouching a lot..

You can't trust the height of Andre the Giant from WWF marketing. I've red somewhere, I don't recall the source and I don't have the time to search for it, that Andre the Giant was closer to 7'.

Well, wiki has him at 7"4", but it's completely credible that that figure was tweaked a bit.

I just remember being endlessly fascinated by Wilt's height when I was a kid, and remember reading all sorts of stories that had him at anywhere from 6'11" to 7'3". I though maybe I found a piece of evidence that would lay that to rest once and for all.

holy hell...i knew wilt was tall, but most people look tall compared to bruce lee. i had no clue he towered like that, though. i'm actually extremely impressed, considering that persons of such height tend to be proportioned somewhat strangely, like our mr. andre there. wilt has beautiful musculature going on. even shaq, who of course is very tall, isn't really shaped the way most people are. also of note here was manute bol, who carried every inch in the most ungainly fashion possible. if it weren't for the contrast of other bodies in the photo, you'd think that wilt was just a normal-sized dude.

EDIT to add that wilt should have lived to see reddit; he would have fit in fine.

Pictures like this make me sad. Andre's disease left him in near-crippling joint pain. Lifting heavy things was actually awful for him. Don't get me wrong though, still a great picture!

Well he always competed in the tall man's competition, and the cut off for that is 5'9". Ferrigno has said he was closer to 5'11". There's no way he was only 5'4".
