In my first car, an '87 Fiero, I had the most kick-ass tape deck. It could fast forward through a song and start playing automatically after it. It had cassette track skipping. I was a tape-playing god.

[–]capitalhforhero 536 points537 points ago

Too bad the only song it would play was The Proclaimers - I'm Gonna Be.

[–]aworldwithoutshrimp 150 points151 points ago

"It comes back."

"It comes back?"

"...And I would walk 500 miles...."

[–]TooMuchTongueGuy 9 points10 points ago

I will never get tired of this song! Never ever never never!

[–]SCato 15 points16 points ago

Just to be that man who walk a thousand miles to fall down at your door?

[–]JOKasten 328 points329 points ago

You were already a God when you started driving an '87 Fiero.

[–]robywar 136 points137 points ago

Dammit don't remind me. BEST. CAR. EVER.

I especially loved how everyone would feel it important to warn me how easily they catch fire.

[–]NervousMcStabby 80 points81 points ago

At one point in time one of my best friends owned two of them. He was going to swap a caddy engine into one and turn it into a convertible. He bought the other one because it was $200. I remember driving that thing and I had two distinct memories:

  1. The clutch and gas were more like on / off switches then pedals. You either had full blast or nothing.
  2. The overwhelming sense that I was going to die while I was behind the wheel. I don't think the fact that I felt like I was sitting upright in a coffin helped much.

[–]mr-peabody 48 points49 points ago

My brother put a V8 in a Fiero GT and wrapped it around a tree about two months later. He was ok, but the car was totaled.

[–]robywar 13 points14 points ago

I think the only reason I got one as a 15 year old is that my dad wanted one when they came out.

You know how it is with your first car. I loved it. I'd love to have another just for fun. Every time I see one I get nostalgic.

But I wouldn't give one to my son as a first car. I drove like an insane person in it. I also frequently got in trouble for bunching two people in the passenger seat.

[–]TheSpaghetti_Monster 3 points4 points ago

My record is 3 in the passenger seat. Probably not smart, now that I think about it...

[–]robvas 26 points27 points ago

Fieros also had speakers IN THE HEADRESTS

[–]thinkythought 4 points5 points ago

pretty sure the Mr2 also did this in the same time period. i know they had a sub under the drivers seat, which is like the awesomest idea ever.

[–]ABabyAteMyDingo 19 points20 points ago

This was called APLD - auto program locate device - at least on the stereo we had. It detected the gap between songs.

[–]DEFY_member 6 points7 points ago

My first car, a '74 Monte Carlo, had an 8-track player. The only "navigation" control was a single button to switch to the next track. There was no direct correlation between tracks and songs. If you wanted to hear a specific song, you had to hit the button (which made a loud "thump" sound) until you recognized a song that came before it, and then wait for that to finish.

[–]robywar 14 points15 points ago

One of my friends in high school drove a Oldsmobile Delta '88 that had an 8-track player in it. We scoured junk stores in town to find tapes for him to listen to and he eventually had a pretty good collection. We called riding in his car "driving on the couch."

[–]string97bean 255 points256 points ago

I can attest to this. I have a fancy radio in my car without an aux port and would give all the bells and whistles away for one.

[–]benjgvps 33 points34 points ago

I asked /r/cars a month ago for a suggestion on how to add an AUX port cheaply to my Corolla and they pointed me towards the iSimple IS31, which I found on eBay for about $30 shipped to Canada. Basically, it's like one of those FM transmitters that you plug into the accessory port and tune to the station it transmits on, except it's hard wired between your antenna and the stereo. The great thing is that it blocks out other people transmitting on that station, so your music/podcasts aren't interrupted if they have a similar device.

The installation was fairly straightforward, though it helped that I brought it into my school's autoshop and asked a friend to help. I've had it in for a few days now and it works really well.

[–]jsstaedtler 30 points31 points ago

My 1998 Intrepid has a cassette deck. There's my AUX right there.

[–]UnexpectedSchism 5 points6 points ago

Also the cassette tape adapters are better for quality than filtering the audio through FM radio.

But for the people with cd players that have no aux input, FM is all they got.

[–]shiatzu 100 points101 points ago

i say get one with an USB instead. then get a 16/32 GB micro usb pen for 10 bucks like this:

http://images.electronicexpress.com/products-lg/19205.jpg

Most of them also have ipod/iphone control so just plug it in and control it using the radio with the advantage of charging the battery at the same time

[–]kart64 190 points191 points ago

Whenver I plug my phone into the USB of most cars I've encountered with the setup, the indexing lags like a motherfucker and the interface is complete shit (when you back out of a directory it goes to the top of the list, which can be super irritating if you have a lot of music). I find the auxiliary cable to be much easier to deal with.

[–]glenomenon 18 points19 points ago

My car stereo has auxiliary and USB inputs. When I first tried using the USB I completely agreed with you, until I realized that controlling the device through the head-unit in USB mode was an optional feature that could be turned off. So basically, you have the option to have USB function exactly like auxiliary, except with the added bonuses that it charges the device and you can use the head-unit skip buttons to move through songs in the current playlist if you want.

EDIT: Also, that horrible purple backlight color in the picture isn't the only option. The backlight color is changeable and there are a lot of choices. I set mine to orange to match the rest of my car's cockpit lighting.

[–]kbug 5 points6 points ago

Glenomenon is right. You just gotta turn off head unit control. Once its off, you just control the device like you would normally and it plays through the receiver. I'm with you though, the head unit controls are basically worthless.

[–]Anon_is_a_Meme 69 points70 points ago

16/32 GB

500 MB ???

[–]green_cheese 55 points56 points ago

512

[–][deleted] 17 points18 points ago

exactly. 10 hour road trip with an iphone wouldn't be possible without some extra juice.

[–]OwDaditHurts 52 points53 points ago

Isn't that what the cigarette lighter is for?

[–][deleted] 210 points211 points ago

no its to light cigarettes, the 12v port it plugs into though can run a variety of electronics.

[–][deleted] 140 points141 points ago

Thanks, Dwight.

[–]dust_free 211 points212 points ago

My cheap 09 Toyota Yaris has the following:

Power locks: No

Power windows: No

Aux input: Yes

Totally worth it.

[–]Sloppy1sts 139 points140 points ago

You can still buy cars without power locks?

[–]laxman89er 61 points62 points ago

I bought a 2010 Chevy Aveo during the "Cash for Clunkers" a few summers ago. Got everything manual (locks, windows, transmission) to cut costs. After the trade in value for my truck, which was 4500 thanks to the MPG difference of it and the new car, all I had to pay for a band new car that gets 37 mpg was $6500.

And it has an AUX input.

[–]Maynguene_banana 12 points13 points ago

Yup, my 2005 Hyundai has manual locks and windows. I want to get a new one, i'm told it even has cruise control. I WANT TO LIVE IN THE FUTURE!

[–]BackstageLeft 30 points31 points ago

My 2007 Mazda3 has cruise control, and it acts like it's possessed. Every little bump or hill means that it has to floor it for no reason. It's terrifying.

[–]lord_wexford 13 points14 points ago

Deciding factor in my Yaris purchase.

[–]TruXter 888 points889 points ago

I had a VR in my old mustang, it had usb,Sd and AUX adapters $38 at walmart. Not good stereo but it was the best damn car stereo I ever owned.

http://cdn-images.sewelldirect.com/products/SW-5096/SW-5096.jpg

[–]happylittlecodes 73 points74 points ago

I've got this in my car. It's awesome, but I'd love to have an SD slot, as all I have are MicroSD cards, and the microSD to USB adapters don't seem to hold up very well.

[–]embretr 74 points75 points ago

[–]dmcnelly 24 points25 points ago

I have the same stereo. I got this little baby thumbdrive that just sits in the USB port that I filled with music. That was a good purchase.

[–]Tom504 26 points27 points ago

If you haven't, try this one. I tried a few other adapters before this that were a pain to deal with, but this one has held up for a few years.

http://www.amazon.com/Sandisk-MobileMate-SDDR-121-Bulk-Package/dp/B0012Y02CE

Oh, and just to brag, mine plugs into this. Alpine makes good equipment IMO

[–]steve_b 71 points72 points ago

I have the same stereo and I think it stinks. The UI is a disaster:

  1. Bumping the volume knob to have it toggle between vol/bass/treble/balance/fade/whatever is idiotic. For years, the protocol was bump to toggle power; now when I accidentally press too hard (which is very easy when you're trying to adjust volume while keeping your eyes on the road), you're changing treble instead of volume, and now you have to take your eyes off the road and look down and bump & read the display until you see it back on "Volume". Every time I get into my car after my wife has been driving, the balance/fader is all messed up because she did the same and couldn't figure out why the volume wasn't changing when she turned the knob.

  2. The pairing with my bluetooth phone (Moto Bionic) doesn't work automatically. Every time I get into the car I have to pair manually and re-enter the 0000 code. My Bionic pairs just fine with the receiver in the other car. Also, this unit doesn't support bluetooth audio, so I can't play music off my phone unless I'm plugged in via the aux port.

  3. There's a bug in the firmware: If there is an mp3 cd which has files that are more than, I think, 30 chars long in the receiver when you turn on the car, the unit resets and it defaults to factory presets - one of which results in the unit producing no sound at all (something to do with the pre-amp).

  4. I really hate the "source" toggle that exists on all these modern multi-input receivers, in that you can't tell the unit to ignore the source, so you're always cycling through modes you'll never use. I think this one teases you with the ability to remove 1 of the sources from the set - why not all you want?

  5. You can't eject the cd unless the car is running or in Acc mode. All other units (factory installed, and the other car's aftermarket one) let you eject the disk when the key's not in the ignition.

  6. Not really a bug, but despite being bluetooth capable and having multiple sources, it doesn't support bluetooth audio.

What drives me nuts in general about most of these modern UI disasters is that receiver designers figured this shit out years ago; it's like they took decades of UI design and throw it out the window every time they make a new piece of hardware and hand off the human factors work to Asok the intern.

[–]cardfire 10 points11 points ago

Upvote for Asok.

[–]reverendnathan 10 points11 points ago

I always liked this brand of stereo. How do you mess up an interface that is just a volume knob and a couple of arrow buttons?! Alpine didn't, but how many other stereos you had to fumble with because someone didn't think of the interface logically.

[–]milpool90 20 points21 points ago

I had this exact one in my old car. Once, in the middle of the night, it just started playing music really loudly when my car wasn't running. No idea what happened.

I assume a ghost.

[–]andrewsmith1986[M] 508 points509 points ago

You appear to be shadow banned.

I approved your comment, go message the admins.

[–]robywar 255 points256 points ago

How does one get shadowbanned?

[–]Yserbius 28 points29 points ago

Admin or spam banhammer. Either the anti-spam system picked up on a pattern of posts that looks like it was spam, or an admin stepped in and hit him with the Hammer.

[–]jakfischer 762 points763 points ago

idk mate. Sometimes you can get banned for posting pics of a girl going down on another girl

[–]RunningBearMan 605 points606 points ago

Was not disappointed.

[–]MagikalGiant 244 points245 points ago

I really liked the angle.

[–]polaroid 132 points133 points ago

Loved the pussy, though.

[–]crunchy51 51 points52 points ago

Pussy is pussy after all.

[–]BecauseiCan1 58 points59 points ago

Bro, you can't be posting the same pic when you trap people.

You gotta mix it up a lil.

[–]jakfischer 277 points278 points ago

You mean like this

[–]TheKittenConspiracy 81 points82 points ago

Dammit you got me twice

[–]eleno 13 points14 points ago

Its a conspiracy!

[–]TheKittenConspiracy 15 points16 points ago

You are the second person to say that to me today i am becoming paranoid.

[–]exnor 8 points9 points ago

It's almost like people see the word Conspiracy everywhere you go.

[–]EvanMacIan 4 points5 points ago

I feel like you're only scratching the surface of how deep this goes.

[–]BecauseiCan1 57 points58 points ago

[–]actuallytwollamas 10 points11 points ago

Why not? Works for this guy.

[–]testaburger1212 16 points17 points ago

That's a mighty fine hairy pussy

[–]MisterTimur 70 points71 points ago

SFW.

I know, I was disappointed too.

[–]OmegaArcadia 137 points138 points ago

But there's so much pussy.

[–][deleted] 31 points32 points ago

We should shadowban his ass.

[–]DarkTrade 35 points36 points ago

One does not simply get shadowbanned...

[–]tempaccount 112 points113 points ago

yes, they do. my first account here was shadow/ninja banned by the reddit admins without reason or excuse. simply told "you know what you did." but no, I don't

[–][deleted] 149 points150 points ago

You know what you did.

[–]came_here_to_say_guy 58 points59 points ago

GOD DAMMIT

[–]Stompedyourhousewith 15 points16 points ago

[–]PeeBagger 65 points66 points ago

Getting in to an argument with AndrewSmith1986 is one way, I lost an account that way a over a year ago. Posted the year he was born and got banned for "revealing personal info" after he sucked off the reddit admins to get them to do his dirty work.

[–]FryGuy1013 114 points115 points ago

He was born in 1986, right?

[–]Nimos 89 points90 points ago

and banned, was nice to reddit with you

[–]Pumpkin_Escobar7 17 points18 points ago

shadow banned

FTFY

[–]Michaelllllll 3 points4 points ago

The irony of this situation is that he has a comment directly under yours.

[–]TruXter 117 points118 points ago

Thank you. I have, and never get a response.

I don't think they can see my messages.

[–]andrewsmith1986[M] 78 points79 points ago

They can see them but they get a shit ton of them.

I believe that you were banned for spamming.

[–]thejournalizer 129 points130 points ago

Yup - Looks like he was added to RTS two years ago. That would be hilarious and unfortunate if he has been commenting all this time, only now to be released into the wild like Pandora's box.

[–]witty_account_name 6 points7 points ago

Judging by how little karma he has, I wouldn't be surprised if this was the case

[–]Tanee 23 points24 points ago

How long does it take for his profile to actually start showing up again? It just says 'page not found' when you click his name.

[–]MindintoMatter 146 points147 points ago

What is Shadow Ban? sounds like a World of Warcraft Guild

[–]andrewsmith1986 260 points261 points ago

Banned but you never know it.

You can still comment, just no one can see the comments.

[–]MindintoMatter 334 points335 points ago

Thank you for the info.

That's like some cruel prank. All the time you're commenting and just thinking no one cares.

[–]huggyb 241 points242 points ago

sounds like the life i live.

[–]TheCuntDestroyer 42 points43 points ago

I believe in you.

[–]Wakasaki_Rocky 4 points5 points ago

Forever alone.

[–]andrewsmith1986 66 points67 points ago

Exactly.

[–]WootenWorship 32 points33 points ago

Look on the bright side though, no downvotes!

[–]Canadiandane 18 points19 points ago

Sounds like the premise for an episode of The Twilight Zone

[–]WezVC 44 points45 points ago

I must be shadow banned from everywhere then because nobody ever seems to notice my comments.

Yeah, that's probably it.

[–]andrewsmith1986 36 points37 points ago

Want the comforting lie?

[–]stewyman 4 points5 points ago

[–]TheTVDB 74 points75 points ago

I don't know about everyone else, but I'm looking forward to seeing everything TruXter has posted since his shadow ban. What if there's something in there that's so insightful it would have caused Republicans and Democrats to hold hands, dog and cat pictures to get the same number of upvotes, and create millions of jobs in the "sit at home and eat Cheetos" industry.

[–]uguysmakemesick 4 points5 points ago

I'm not sure if there's anything worse than being shadow banned. It's just.. it's really against many of the things we Redditors are fighting for right now. And yet, we don't get all up in arms about this.. on our own website.

[–]Bilbo_Fraggins 74 points75 points ago

Add a volume rocker on the steering wheel and you get pretty much how I use my deck.

[–]Ranlier 21 points22 points ago

I also have a track skipper on my wheel in addition to volume, it's awesome

[–]DoTheDew 147 points148 points ago*

I just want someone to explain why my 2006 Acura TL came with a cassette player. Cassettes haven't been mainstream since the late 80's. It does make a nice gum pack holder though.

[–]deavon 72 points73 points ago

Books on tape. Old people like them, and old people buy Acura, Lexus, etc.

[–]DoTheDew 24 points25 points ago

This is probably the correct answer.

[–]vinfx 49 points50 points ago

Cassettes haven't been mainstream since the late 80's.

That's not true. People used cassette walkmans because they didn't like the alternative: the CD walkman. The CD walkmans would skip like hell if you took them jogging or even walking. Their case size was much bulkier and larger. When you were shopping for a portable player and you saw an older small version and a newer large version, the large one felt like a step backward.

Cassette tapes were still mainstream up until the late 90's, which is around the time CDs began massively accelerating in popularity. Because of the aforementioned problems, there was trailing usage of the cassettes until 2001 when the iPod came out. It was the iPod that put the nail in the coffin for cassettes and began the death of the CD.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cassette_tape

[–]LobsterThief 5 points6 points ago

Also, CD players with anti-skip

[–]Goreleech 72 points73 points ago

[–]Balls_deep_in_it 129 points130 points ago

They make the music sound like its coming though a papertowel roll.

[–]crwcomposer 121 points122 points ago

Which is no worse than using the cassette player as a cassette player.

[–]vapre 14 points15 points ago

Better than an FM Transmitter. Unless it's wired-in, it's probably terrible.

[–]georgemikefunke 19 points20 points ago

Mine usually sounds pretty solid with one of these bad boys

[–]Uphoria 5 points6 points ago

I've never had that problem, I wondered if it was something to do with quality of manufacture.

[–]bangslash 5 points6 points ago

Mine sounds awesome. Depends on the bit-rate, but normally it sounds amazing. No one can ever tell it is a tape interface.

[–]rock_lobsterrr 8 points9 points ago

Will you sell me your car? I want a TL SO BAD.

[–]DoTheDew 13 points14 points ago

It was my dream car too back when I bought it in 2008. Was so excited when I found a good deal on one in perfect condition. Extra bonus: It was a 6 spd (super rare for an '06. Only 1 in 42 came with a stick) Bought it with 19,000 miles and it's got 86,000 miles today (would be much less if I didn't commute 100 miles roundtrip for work for 2 years). It'll be paid off in 6 months. First car I've ever held onto until I paid it off. I'm not even interested in getting something new. Looking forward to having no car payment for at least a couple of years.

[–]drweezyfbaby 18 points19 points ago

mid-late 90s is much more accurate but still definitely not 2006.

[–]prof_doxin 364 points365 points ago

I wanted a USB port in my car (to run almost everything) back in 1996. 20 years later...still waiting.

Do guys at auto makers all wear onions on their belt?

[–]Gargan_Roo 227 points228 points ago

I have one :3 (2010 Kia Optima), it also doubles as an iPod controller if you buy a special USB/Aux cable (you can use the dash & steering wheel buttons to directly control it).

[–]kanst 76 points77 points ago

I have this on my Hyundai

[–]themoop78 160 points161 points ago

I bought a hyundai for this. No other cars in its class that I was looking at had it except for the hyundai. A part that cost less than a buck made me buy their car.

[–]ProfessionalGoat 288 points289 points ago

TIL people buy cars for their stereo instead of stereos for their car.

[–][deleted] 69 points70 points ago

The whole industry is fucked in that respect. 99% of aftermarket head units look like garbage and don't integrate without serious headaches anymore. And most car companies dont give a shit and wont bother to make their cars work with other stereo equipment or give consumers options. I think its part of the reason that nobody buys american cars, because all the asian manufacturers have these options but american manufacturers are still too stupid To include things that people want.

[–]amped96 56 points57 points ago

I was with you up until the American cars part. You haven't seen one the hundreds of ads for Ford Sync? It's actually a great little system.

[–]smoger 43 points44 points ago

Ford driver here.. sync was what tipped me to ford when i bought my car last year and it's absolutely terrific.

and yeah - american carmakers in general are really doing well right now.

[–]ChagSC 46 points47 points ago

My Dad bought a 2012 F-150 truck spaceship. Completely blown away with how much technology is in that thing. And Sync kicks all kinds of ass.

[–]var23 10 points11 points ago

Just got a 2012 F-350 and share this sentiment.

[–]thebigbradwolf 4 points5 points ago

The question isn't really how good is it, but how easy is it to replace when you want to replace it.

[–]shnuffy 18 points19 points ago

My 2009 Civic has USB. Controls an iPod and everything.

[–]priceisalright 7 points8 points ago

I own a 2008 civic... the last year they didn't include a usb port.

[–]crixmaydine 20 points21 points ago*

Mazda's have Bluetooth standard that will sync to any bluetooth device and can be controlled from the steering wheel. Even Pandora, Rdio, Spotify, MOG etc. And no cables ever.

I get in my car and my phone starts playing.

edit: I should add that it also has an Aux port inside the console with a cigarette lighter jack for alternate devices, it doesn't have iPod interface though.

[–]UmmStef 6 points7 points ago

So I just got this car, where do I get this magic cable of wonder? Also does the 'cat folder' make you giggle like it does me?

[–]Gargan_Roo 5 points6 points ago

Amazon for $16.25

Also does the 'cat folder' make you giggle like it does me?

I had never thought about it until now, but I am certain that if I should do any sort of modding it will be used solely for bringing up photos of cats :)

[–]TheGator25 79 points80 points ago

Microsoft sync in Ford cars. I was honestly blown away how well the voice commands work. I can't believe this hasn't been more of a selling point. I'll never buy another car without it.

[–]TheCapn 27 points28 points ago

A buddy of mine has it in his Ford Focus. It's a better setup than I've seen in cars that cost a lot more.

[–]punkrkr27 23 points24 points ago

I have it in my Focus as well. I love it so much. I just leave my old 120GB iPod Classic plugged in via USB and hidden away in the arm rest. Having your entire music library easily accessible by voice or touch screen is amazing.

[–]Matub 17 points18 points ago

Am I your buddy? Because I have a Focus with Sync and my friends are all amazed by the voice commands.

I also thank my car any time it correctly does something for me.

"Playing Playlist FUCK FUCK SHIT PICKLE ASS BALLS" Thank you, Layla.

[–]Typerrrrrrr 23 points24 points ago

as if Mike Rowe didn't sway your decision

[–]Floom101 96 points97 points ago

Which was the style at the time. Back in my day nickels had bee's on them! Gimmie five bee's for a quarter, you'd say.

[–]TwoLegsJoe 56 points57 points ago

Anyway, it was 19dickaty2. We had to use "dickaty" because the kaiser stole the word "twenty!"

The important thing was that I had an onion tied to my belt, which was the style at the time.

[–]i_cant_fap_to_that 32 points33 points ago

20 years later...still waiting.

Quite a few cars have USB ports. ಠ_ಠ

[–]Thethoughtful1 22 points23 points ago

Ah, but his 1996 Chevy Impala hasn't gotten one yet, even though he stopped time for four years.

[–]DoctorWedgeworth 12 points13 points ago

You didn't ask for much did you? USB 1 only came out early 1996, and 1.1 was 1998

[–]pantan 21 points22 points ago

You need to buy a new car to enable that feature...

[–]ROK247 15 points16 points ago

just about every ford has one now.

[–]cafink 9 points10 points ago

What exactly are you waiting for? They're perfectly common now, and have been for several years.

[–]Kingfisher0 6 points7 points ago

I know a lot of new Toyotas have USB ports. I play music off a thumb drive on my Scion tC.

[–]obsidianop 25 points26 points ago

I think the ridiculous work-arounds we've gone through for the past twenty-five years while NOBODY was putting a simple $.25 mini stereo jack on their car stereos is one of the great unsolved mysteries of our time. I'm imagining auto executives being bought off by the fly-by-night makers of those stupid radio transmitter dongles that never worked.

[–]HyperText89 78 points79 points ago

[FIXED] I think you mean this: http://imgur.com/IQrgY

[–]ChiperSoft 16 points17 points ago

Needs a volume control.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points ago

Take all that unnecesary shit off and add a bluetooth ornament.

[–]Patass 17 points18 points ago

they have them with bluetooth, it's much better than an aux line. You can change tracks and shit from the radio itself and keep your phone or whatever in your pocket.

[–]bipolarrogue 34 points35 points ago

Our brand new full size Ford work vans (E150) have a plain am/fm radio.

No Cd. No Cassete. No LCD screen. No ANYTHING.

But they have an AUX jack. Awesome sauce.

[–]StretchinAZ 101 points102 points ago

I just want an Android powered head unit.

[–]Elliott2 32 points33 points ago

my GTI needs this.... thank you.

edit: found the price.... no I don't :(

[–]RBeck 13 points14 points ago

I just did the same thing... OH VW!! Oh $900...

[–]blow_up_your_video 22 points23 points ago*

Holy shit, that is from my little hometown Karlsruhe, Germany! WE ARE ON REDDIT, WE ARE FAMOUS!

[–]jimaug87 44 points45 points ago

that could sync with my phone via bluetooth!

This has to happen.

[–]ikonoclasm 65 points66 points ago

I went into Best Buy the other day to look at radios and one of the guys walked up to me asking what I wanted.

Me: An aux port and a couple USB ports for charging.

Him: A CD player?

Me: Nope.

Him: Mp3 support?

Me: Nope.

Him: Satellite radio?

Me: Nope.

Him: So just aux and USB ports?

Me: That's it.

Him: Uh, yah, we got these over here...

All the terrestrial radio stations I listen to are available either through I Heart Radio or TuneIn Radio apps. My music is all stored on my phone or Google Music. Podcasts are on my phone. Audiobooks are on my phone. Aside from decent speakers, my car stereo needs are pretty minimal.

[–]DuManchu 30 points31 points ago

[–]SG-17 13 points14 points ago

Shame you won't be able to pick up those extraterrestrial radio stations though.

[–]chaiguy 18 points19 points ago

Do you have a make/model number?

[–][deleted] 50 points51 points ago

Actually preferred the cassette tape player in my 1992 Volvo over the CD player in my 2001 Galant.

[–]eqisow 62 points63 points ago

Gotta love those 3.5mm to tape adaptors, eh?

[–][deleted] 25 points26 points ago

It's all you need and the sound quality is great!

[–]ExK4 74 points75 points ago

"Great"

[–][deleted] 12 points13 points ago

Ford sells a $200 kit to add an aux-in to my radio. And you don't even have to change the faceplate because there's already a button to select aux-in!

Fucking pirates.

[–]rube 38 points39 points ago

USB is equally important. My car came with both USB and aux. I leave a flashdrive in the USB filled with whatever music I might want to listen to, and I plug my phone into the aux occasionally when I want to listen to a podcast or whatever else I might have on it.

The USB is so damn convenient.

[–]455face[!] 56 points57 points ago

im a total hipster so this is the car stereo i want: http://i.imgur.com/pzQoj.jpg

[–]ChiperSoft 30 points31 points ago

oh god, the skipping

[–]FireFight 8 points9 points ago

It'll skip more than 5 year old girls in a playground

[–]Buttock 23 points24 points ago

I would love a non-flashy car radio. I am completely baffled how it is impossible to find one. Neither can I comprehend why anyone would want something so silly looking and so visible to car thieves.

[–]familyguy20 5 points6 points ago

Most SINGLE-DIN stereos at least come with a detachable faceplate.

[–]inthefIowers 6 points7 points ago

Yeah but then you have to take that fucker off every time you don't want it there. And let me tell you, after a 12 hour shift and you're trying to jiggle it back in right and it's not working.. UGH..

[–]gluemope 8 points9 points ago

I like me some Bluetooths in my car. Doesn't sound as good as cables, but fuck cables. Plus, I'm over 30, I don't listen to loud music anymore, anyways.

[–]hexxorleiva 25 points26 points ago

I'm still all for mp3 CD's because dealing with two devices that deal with volume is two too many.

That and I like the fact that I have a record of what I thought was 'music' even two years ago.

[–]rnichols 108 points109 points ago

Am I the only one that actually likes bluetooth?

I bought a cheap bluetooth cig lighter attachment and plug it into the aux jack and it works great. I hear a lot of people complain about bluetooth not being reliable. I guess I'm just lucky. I use it as a speaker phone too.

[–]iamadogforreal 143 points144 points ago

and plug it into the aux jack and it works great.

The complaint here is that a lot of stock radios don't even have aux port. They have all sorts of shit, but no aux.

[–]Silenced_is_Foo 31 points32 points ago

I'm pretty sure that most stock radios do have an aux port... at the back, for a CD changer.

My car is from '06 and it has an "aux" button but no visible port. Seriously auto industry, WTF?

[–]Clovis69 20 points21 points ago*

Have you looked at the bottom of the center console? Some makers like to hide them in there.

Edit - A common place is up against the front of the center console wall way down deep inside there. Or under the change holder in the center console, or like at the back of a cup holder. Just stupid places for access.

[–]dorv 25 points26 points ago

LOVE bluetooth streaming to my stereo.

[–]ajayrockrock 11 points12 points ago

My car came with bluetooth and it sounds good enough for me. Then again I listen to mostly podcasts and not a ton of music.

But having it paried up with my iphone with iSub talking to my subsonic server at the house is the greatest thing since the empeg.

[–]EnderbyEqualsD 15 points16 points ago

Whoa there! Gotta throw an EQ in that bitch.

[–]BanditoRojo 44 points45 points ago

I remember blowing all my burger-flipping money on my car stereo. Now all I need is $20 headphones. What happened to the simple pleasures in life?

[–]iamadogforreal 113 points114 points ago

Its illegal in most (all?) states to drive with headphones on.

[–]Joe__Dirt 20 points21 points ago

I'm getting a different picture. It's mostly legal in most states... http://www.autoguide.com/auto-news/2012/04/wearing-headphones-while-driving-legal-in-most-states.html

[–]cryptorchidism 6 points7 points ago

Here's the original infographic, complete with details on each state.

[–]whatsadigg 13 points14 points ago

Yeah, you can only have one earbud in at a time (at least that's how it is here in CA).

[–]eqisow 32 points33 points ago

Although I'm not sure why. I often drive with my stereo loud enough that I can't hear much going on outside anyway, and that's not illegal. What other argument is there?

[–]Chromavita 64 points65 points ago

Also, deaf people are allowed to drive, so hearing must not be necessary to safely drive a car. Also, you're allowed/suggested/required to wear handsfree devices in most places, which seem an awful lot like headphones. I never understood this law.

[–]Zapperkhan 6 points7 points ago

What? That unit doesn't even have dolphins doing flips and shit.

[–]MissJill 7 points8 points ago

I still want the top one

[–]Permagrin[!] 5 points6 points ago

Why even have a jack?

I recently got one of these bad boys and I really loving it. Not only does my ipod plug into the back of the unit where I can control it from the head unit itself, I can pair my phone with it and play media from there as well. No wires laying about my car and so far has been really reliable.

[–]ghettajetta 4 points5 points ago

Probably will get buried, but if you get one of these Plus one of these of appropriate length And one of these with enough channels for your particular car (probably 4, 5 if you want to add a sub), you wont even need a headunit/radio in the dash. You could even make a custom mount using a multimedia dock for your phone, and viola, your phone is now your headunit.

[–]gzrecoil 14 points15 points ago

You have low standards. I just bought a unit with A2DP and AVRCP so I can wireless stream music from Android, also has HD radio, 13 band equalizer, three 4V pre-amps, timing & position adjustments by speaker size, and pretty much anything else you can think of.

Installing today, cannot freaking wait!

[–]zijital 4 points5 points ago

HD Radio is very overlooked.

[–]UnassumingHipster 9 points10 points ago

It's ironic how almost every car had a tape deck until the late 90s, when many of them became equipped with only a CD player and no auxiliary port for only about 10 years.

You can use a cassette adapter on older cars to listen to an ipod/mp3, and you can use an AUX port on newer cars, but if your car is from about 1996-2006, you can't listen to your ipod at all.

Lucky me, though, I'm too broke to even have a car at all. I ride a road bike around, and since I follow every traffic law, I would feel unsafe listening to an ipod while doing so.

Not that not having a car makes me better than anyone else, of course. To each his own. I'm not one to judge.

[–]ruination77[!] 2 points3 points ago

Check out the devium dash. Might be what you're looking for.
