In light of the NC bill, I think this serves as a reminder for all of those people who strive to return to “traditional marriage.” (27.media.tumblr.com)

I gave you an upvote for the funny.
If you'll forgive me, it was about three in the morning, I was pissed off, and I hadn't slept in a while.

Marriage as we know it originated as a trade; usually the union was consummated with a dowry of livestock or something equally valuable. The other part of the quote was a slight at the bible (which is the widely accepted final word on marriage in the US) where it states that a woman who is not found to be a virgin on her wedding day is to be stoned to death.
It's about consistency; if gay marriage is wrong because the bible says so, then so is marriage to the deflowered. And associating with girls on their periods. And eating shellfish.

My favourite examples, within Australia, are no-fault divorce and rape within marriage.
The State of South Australia had a specific provision in rape law that went something to the effect of "a woman, not his wife" meaning that it was impossible for a man to rape his wife, he had assumed consent irrespective of what the woman wanted.
New South Wales didn't recognise rape within Marriage until the 1980s. When people tell me about the 'tradition' and 'sanctity' of marriage, I just point them to the tradition of marriage before 1980, and whether they'd like to turn to the 'old ways'.

i love it when people talk about how happier people were "back then" and how everything was better.
no they weren't and no it wasn't. there's never been better laws, healthcare and more freedom than today (speaking mainly of western europe).
