Hey you, yes you. Do you know why this is on the frontpage? It's because:

  1. Most people on Reddit haven't seen it, so they upvoted it because they thought it was funny.
  2. People have seen it, but thought it was funny enough to warrant another upvote so more Redditors can see it.

Reposts aren't bad, people like you pointing out reposts are bad. Not everyone has seen everything you have.

Not when most people don't see something the first time around. I would say a maximum of only 10% of Reddit see's something the first time it's posted.

Think about everything you've ever seen on Reddit, most of the rest of us haven't. And the same goes for you. Most of what I've seen, you haven't.

So in reality:

New content is new for everyone.

Old content is new for 90% of Reddit...and so on and so forth until eventually it becomes viral or something and most people have seen it.

The first example "saying hurtful things" and the second, 'beating a nominee' are sufficiently separate in scope, in my opinion, that some sort of modifier is necessary to drive home that the seperate example is about actual physical violence. It was a literal beating, though only metaphorical shit was removed.

Yes, but you're acting like he used it horribly wrong. He meant that one can "literally beat" another nominee and still perform. That's literal, it happened. However, he slipped "the shit out of" in the middle of his sentence for emphasis, probably not because he doesn't know what "literally" means, but because A) he's accustomed to using profanity for emphasis and B) he was saying something controversial to an audience on live television and didn't have an opportunity to correct his mistake and thus ruin his joke. "Oh, wait, the 'beating' part was literal, not the 'shit' part. Real sorry, guise, shucks."

Meh. It's true that language evolves to suit its users, but standardization is a good thing sometimes, too. In this case, it's confusing because the same word is used to mean two totally opposite things. The function of language is to convey meaning; when organic use fails to do that, and instead creates confusion, it's appropriate to follow a rule or standard definition. It may be arbitrary, but it actually adds to language rather than detracting from it. It enhances language's ability to serve its purpose. That is, assuming people bother to give a shit about the rule.
