Dammit, one of those antennas is blocking the exact spot where I live.

Still cool.

[–]darthcarnate 7 points8 points ago

Scumbag antenna blocks the capital from view.

"Jim...Jim...transmission to Jim!"

"What!?"

"I'm gonna zero g exploder kick you into New Zealand."

"Wait! Don't!"

"Too late, made up my mind."

[–]Three_Headed_Monkey 8 points9 points ago

If I were an astronaut I would so not get any work done. I would just float there, looking down.

[–]BamBam-BamBam 7 points8 points ago

Well, I guess that New Zealand can get more fucking remote.

[–]SourCreamWater 1 point2 points ago

Been there 4 times. 4 hour flight to Honolulu for another 4 hour layover. Then another 14 hour flight. It's fucking faaaaaar. This was flying from LAX.

[–]hoody8 6 points7 points ago

Why not fly direct with Air New Zealand?

[–]SourCreamWater 9 points10 points ago

I have flown Air NZ twice. Best airline food and service I have had to be honest.

Twice with Delta.

Still had to layover in Honolulu every time though. Probably a price or fuel reason. Probably was cheaper with a layover or a 747 can't make it that far without refueling? I dunno.

[–]hoody8 4 points5 points ago

I know for certain that Air NZ fly direct from Auckland to Los Angeles and have done so for a long time! And yeah, Delta along with most American airlines suck for long haul flights, the cost cutting is all too obvious.

[–]SourCreamWater 5 points6 points ago

Seriously. Air NZ actually made me take notice of how great it was. I've flown with them, Quantas, Delta, US Airways, American Airlines, Southwest...you name it. Air NZ was the ONLY airline that actually made me notice their level of service.

[–]hoody8 7 points8 points ago

Yep, but the scary thing is that you will probably find the service just as good on other airlines from Asia (Qantas is normally OK, but not as friendly as NZ) - America just has no clue how to run an airline anymore. I hate to say that the same thing has happened to cars over the last 10 years: American cars have become big, badly built, archaic fuel guzzlers while European and Asian cars have improved in leaps and bounds. Pretty much no one outside of the States chooses to buy an American designed car. It's time for America to step up its game.

[–]dsigned001 0 points1 point ago

I can second this -- Thai, Singapore, JAL. For domestic flights I don't much care, but I will not fly an American carrier internationally (unless the actual flight is through a partner like Cathay).

[–]SourCreamWater 0 points1 point ago

Airlines I agree with you. American Airlines(not the brand, but in general) suck nuts. Cars...the US has actually really stepped it up lately. Same with Korea. Kia and Hyundai have REALLY stepped it up. I had a Kia as a rental when my Jeep got stolen and I almost didn't want to give it back.

[–]TheNerdWithNoName 2 points3 points ago*

Dodge have been selling cars in Australia for a couple of years now and you can really tell the difference between American shit and everything else from the rest of the world. My god they are fucking ugly and plastic-y. Granted, if they were as cheap over here as they are in the states, it may be a bit more tempting to purchase one. As it is, there are not many on the road and the reasons are obvious. $25k for a Dodge Caliber in Australia vs $15k for one in the States.

EDIT: changed hear to here.

[–]SourCreamWater 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, but to be fair...German cars have gotten just as plastic-y. I was at an auto show not more than a year ago and sat in everything.

The Audi A-8 was my favorite. The Flagship 700 Bimmer I thought the inside door handle was going to pop off in my hand. I am a long time proponent of BMW...but for close to 100K...that shit felt cheap. The Chrysler 300 was pretty fucking solid. For $60,000 less.

[–]hoody8 0 points1 point ago

I'll have to try an American car again. Last time I drove one it was a massive hunk of luxury SUV. It actually performed pretty well but there were some things that were a bit off. One of the reasons that some of the more recent cars in the States have been a better is that they're starting to focus on developing cars from a "global platform" - for instance the new Ford Fusion is actually based on the same platform as the European Ford Mondeo (and this was developed entirely in Europe). I haven't driven a Korean car for a while (they were awful in the early 2000's) but I've had friends drive them and they don't seem bad at all - the quality of the finish is just as good as Japanese autos these days.

[–]Niam_Leesom 0 points1 point ago

New Hyundai's are on par with Nissan, Toyota and mazda when it comes to build quality and features but are better on price. Drove an I30 turbo diesel, it was very impressive and only $23990 Aud, probably will buy one.

[–]Indy_Rider 4 points5 points ago

I love them, I flew home to Australia via NZ on them, it was the day the FAA fucked up their computers a few years back, so hardly anyone managed to get to LA in time for the flight.

Got a free first class upgrade, and got drunk with the hot air hostesses.

[–]The_Painted_Man 1 point2 points ago

Lucky sod. All i ever got from Air NZ was a fully container of OJ dropped on my lap.

[–]Gabe_b 1 point2 points ago

Their beef is awesome

[–]tommcg 1 point2 points ago

you can fly direct from NZ to LAX, it's stopover airport if you're flying to Europe.

[–]Astrokiwi 0 points1 point ago

Or QANTAS

[–]BamBam-BamBam 0 points1 point ago

No, whey.

[–]SourCreamWater 0 points1 point ago

I don't think there are many Kurds there, either.

[–]BamBam-BamBam 2 points3 points ago

Slow golf clap.

[–]BamBam-BamBam 1 point2 points ago

Evidently, the ones who are there know to fly Air New Zealand

[–]euro_lemon 0 points1 point ago

All of my opvotes for the obscure video that's relevant.

[–]BamBam-BamBam 0 points1 point ago

Who the fuck is downvoting this? This was brilliant! His username is SourCreamWater, and I replied to his post with "No, whey." Whey = SourCreamWater. He came back with a great pun! You did something bad, you should feel bad.

[–]SourCreamWater 0 points1 point ago

Thank you! It was one of the rare opportunities and I took it. :P

[–]BamBam-BamBam 0 points1 point ago

Admit it. You've had that one in your back pocket for a while.

[–]SourCreamWater 0 points1 point ago

No actually that one was on the fly. I have seen so many brilliant puns and was pretty excited when I came up with one of my own.

[–]mister_h 7 points8 points ago

Anyone have the hi-res version? Such a tease.

[–]raorin 15 points16 points ago

[–]aptek 1 point2 points ago

Backgrounded.

[–]raorin 2 points3 points ago

You bet it is! I uploaded to imgur from my backgrounds folder :P

[–]mister_h 0 points1 point ago

Hooray! Thank you!

[–]brahmss 6 points7 points ago

I envy these men so much.

[–]Cameron1991 5 points6 points ago

I can actually make out the suburb where I live in this picture.

[–]ScrewedOver 5 points6 points ago

I think that's Robert Curbeam during STS 116. I'll let him know he made it to Reddit.

[–]SplendidDust 2 points3 points ago

The Carter Observatory in Wellington uses this photo on their season passes.

[–]MeGaZ_NZ 2 points3 points ago

http://imgur.com/SmwoP if you Enhance at the black dot, remove it and fix the picture up a bit, you can see me doing my impression of kony 2012 via jumping from car to car naked.

Also would be able to see a few lovely roads destroyed from our lovely earthquakes. :)

[–]n0de 3 points4 points ago

/wave from the port hills

[–]MeGaZ_NZ 1 point2 points ago

Christchurch much look great up there! :D

[–]eightwebs 2 points3 points ago

I can see the cable from the south island stopping the north island from floating away.

[–]Kruse 22 points23 points ago

Middle-earth from space.

FTFY

[–]onlysame1 3 points4 points ago

I feel like throwing up by just looking at the picture. Fuck being afraid of heights

[–]DollarsforDerek 0 points1 point ago

Christ I know. I just had my first fear of "getting lost in space when the tether breaks" moment..

[–]theodredmaximus 2 points3 points ago

They're takingcthe hobbits to Isengard!

[–]alphanovember 0 points1 point ago

What the fuck is wrong with that narrator's voice? Did he stick a sock in his mouth before stepping towards the mic?

[–]Suddenly_Something 0 points1 point ago

I did a giant NOPE at the pictures of the guy just floating in the middle of space. It's obvious the big round thing behind him isn't the Earth, it's one of his testicles.

[–]mkhopper 0 points1 point ago

I'd do it. Seeing those pics, the urge to just let go and float free and completely untethered has got to be huge.

[–]dobfre 0 points1 point ago

oh man! i don't think i would have noticed, but i read your comment before i watched the video and just cracked up when the narrator started.

[–]LOLlerblades100 1 point2 points ago

This picture does an amazing job of capturing the sense of distance from outer space

[–]scorpionbowl 1 point2 points ago

It makes me sad that I'll never be able to experience this in person

[–]diphiminaids 1 point2 points ago

That has got to be the most insane, beautiful feeling. To just float above earth like that. Jealousy level - spacewalkers.

[–]rocketshipotter 1 point2 points ago

TIL I want to be an astronaut.

Although I'm terrified of heights, so that might be an issue.

[–]Singspike 1 point2 points ago

Immediately brought http://i.imgur.com/ALa8l.jpg to mind.

[–]ManowaR1488 3 points4 points ago

He could still hear the haka

[–]Ov1d 0 points1 point ago

I remember this from a a couple years back! Personally I enjoy these two:one, and two. Super intense.

[–]unitconversion 3 points4 points ago

Here's a combination of that and that one diner picture.

It's like Australia but without all the hurty things

[–]fran13r 0 points1 point ago

i'm so glad he's on top of the ocean, that way, if he falls down, he'll be okay cause he will land on water, seems like a great dive imo :)

[–]BigManlyBeastGirl 0 points1 point ago

..Umm...

[–]ILoveTrance 0 points1 point ago

Amazing.

[–]ctothel 0 points1 point ago

That astronaut is moving a giant multiplug!

[–]shalafi71 0 points1 point ago

I can see Gondor from here.

[–]Elektr0ns 0 points1 point ago

Damn space! You sexy! But really that's a fantastic view.

[–]CorporateGiant 0 points1 point ago

I actually know that astronaut. I even have a signed picture by him.

[–]papersquares 0 points1 point ago

space looks so fuckin awesome. I wish I could go there.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

I think if I was an astronaut and I turned around and was looking at the earth from that angle I might poop myself.

[–]FishStand 0 points1 point ago

I always imagine it'd be an awesome experience, but also scary as hell, to be out in space like that.

[–]Samuel412 0 points1 point ago

You know, its got to take some amazing balls to say to yourself, "Okay, we're 'round about 100 miles above the surface of the Earth. Let's go out for a stroll."

[–]All-American-Bot 0 points1 point ago

(For our friends outside the USA... 100 miles -> 160.9 km) - Yeehaw!

[–]Jani3D 0 points1 point ago

New plan for for disposing of the One Ring.

[–]alexthetiger 0 points1 point ago

If you look closely, you can see Bilbo Baggins...

[–]Lele_ 0 points1 point ago

It's amazing how close to the Earth the clouds are.

[–]IwalkNaked 0 points1 point ago

wut?

[–]magictoenail 0 points1 point ago

I wonder how long it takes to get desensitized to that job. Like how many times can you just stop what you're doing, look around, and be like, "I'm floating around in motherfucking space right now" before it gets old?

[–]experbia 0 points1 point ago

Darn, looks like Palmerston North and anything north of that on the north island is cut-off. Can't find my friend's house from orbit! :(

Pretty awesome picture though.

[–]Paultimate79 0 points1 point ago

Ah, so this is the Kiwi space program!

[–]JarateIsAPissJar 0 points1 point ago

Hey John, Don't let go. It's a long fall.

[–]ThisOpenFist 0 points1 point ago

Kiwis, how does it feel to have a couple of Yankees watching over your entire homeland?

[–]yesthatjusthappened 0 points1 point ago

I've got this picture rasturbated in my dining room. Looks great

[–]Brianne123 0 points1 point ago

Pictures like this make me feel very small...

[–]xk45hm1rx 0 points1 point ago

I think I see the Shire

[–]Temujin_123 0 points1 point ago

They are actually working on the front tip of what will become the next generation ISS:

[–]cosworth99 0 points1 point ago

Fuck jpg artifacting.

[–]irishian1992 0 points1 point ago

Fucking hell, I'm getting vertigo just looking at that.

[–]colinsteadman 0 points1 point ago

I really love the the words "from space", they really give this picture the gravity it deserves.

[–]jamesvini 0 points1 point ago

This make me home sick

[–]photoddgrapher 0 points1 point ago

FTFY: What NASA didn't tell you is that they were actually fixing the bumper on Mitt Romney's new campaign bus. All I gotta say is that's one hell of a carbon footprint! :) http://i.imgur.com/raMCF.png

[–]faggotoni 0 points1 point ago

Holy shit dude, humans got to space.

[–]Zombait 0 points1 point ago

[–]bojo600 -5 points-4 points ago

[–]Kavanaugh 6 points7 points ago

Ok, come on. There wasn't even remotely anything to do with portal here? How hard do you people need to try to shove that joke down everyone's throats?

[–]bojo600 -3 points-2 points ago

very hard. VERY VERY HARD

[–]trueguardian 1 point2 points ago

Go away

[–]LSDean -1 points0 points ago

I'm ready for the downvotes, but, "This vacuum of space will be the death of the Hobbits!"

[–]levilarrington -3 points-2 points ago

Hey, you can see Peter Jackson!

[–]zangorn -2 points-1 points ago

Whats that, the Russian space program?

[–]TheEnormousPenis -2 points-1 points ago

If you zoom in really close you can see a guy buggering a sheep down there.

[–]CaptainSmak -1 points0 points ago

What is that squiggly line? Is that a road that can be seen from space?

[–]davo_nz[S] 8 points9 points ago

Its a river, The Waiau I believe.

[–]CivilEngee 24 points25 points ago

No, it's the Uruk-hai marching to Helm's deep

[–]darthcarnate 0 points1 point ago

Hahaha Waiau, never again.

[–]Kerfien -1 points0 points ago

That's not space

[–]Kerfien -1 points0 points ago

That's just the upper atmosphere

[–]Karnas -1 points0 points ago

Pretty sure that's Cook. Off the coast of New Zealand.

[–]mindtoast -1 points0 points ago

hey bru! Someone's spying on our stash of steinlager!

[–]feminas_id_amant -1 points0 points ago

is that middle earth?

[–]MrSafeT -4 points-3 points ago

That's obviously not New Zealand. If so, I'd be able to see the eye of Sauron from here. This is BS.

[–]SupSatire -5 points-4 points ago

[–]Joke_Getter -3 points-2 points ago

I can see someone fucking a sheep! Wait, hang on. That can't be right. Oh, it's 20 people fucking 20 sheep.

[–]ChristKInd -3 points-2 points ago

I can see the sheep from here!
