Monty Python, Here is the whole sketch: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ALInv_wzSQ

[–]aesu 6 points7 points ago

Ah. I thought I had came up with this idea independently, recently.

I wonder if I saw this first...

[–]ketchy_shuby 17 points18 points ago

Word is, it looks like London.

[–]showurnuts 16 points17 points ago

I don't understand anyone who says they hate Monty Python. I mean, you don't have to love it.. but why hate? It's brilliant.

[–]aesu 5 points6 points ago

Mmm, maybe because it makes fun of their silly beliefs?

[–]Arntron -4 points-3 points ago

Nah dude, I have what you would call a "silly" belief and it ain't that, I just hate British humor.

[–]aesu 4 points5 points ago

Ain't what? It makes fun of a lot of silly beliefs.

[–]Arntron -1 points0 points ago

it ain't what makes me hate monty python... The dry and slow British entertainment is why I hate it, I tend to keep religion and humor separate in most instances.

[–]aesu 4 points5 points ago

I see, you prefer it wet and fast.

I also like to keep religion and humor separate. I like to keep religion separate. They really go out my way to make me laugh though, with their pointy hats and golden temples.

[–]showurnuts 0 points1 point ago

I sure do like your sense of humor, aesu.

[–]Arntron -1 points0 points ago

Hey, whatever floats your boat man!

[–]DoctorFunk 1 point2 points ago

I reckon this your speed?

[–]Arntron 0 points1 point ago

Nah, hate him too, will ferrel all the way baby!

[–]actualPsychopath 9 points10 points ago

Of course there is life after death, just not your life.

[–]Marooki 22 points23 points ago

Die first, then we'll talk.

[–]fceffect 0 points1 point ago

Conversely, build god.

[–]iTumor 9 points10 points ago*

These pundits are no more! They have ceased to be!

[–]Lemmiwinks0141 1 point2 points ago

They're gone to meet their makah. Bereft of life. These are ex-pundits!

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points ago

That kind of looks like John Cleese there.. Am I right?

[–]coffeetablesex 12 points13 points ago

Kind of? Really?

[–]greytrench 2 points3 points ago

Well, yes, a bit. When I examine this object that sort of resembles a computer screen with ocular lenses that are not entirely unlike eyeballs, I can just make out a slight resemblance between the image on the screen-like object and the actor John Cleese. This illusion is only strengthened when compared to this site-ish thing which contains things that appear vaguely image-like, and which bear a strong resemblance to the OP's post.

[–]Must_be_wrong_here 4 points5 points ago

Did you know his real name was John Cheese, but he thought it would be too silly to work as an actor

[–]BunchaFukinElephants 5 points6 points ago

Actually, it used to be his family's surname. He's always been John Cleese.

"His family's surname was previously "Cheese", but his father changed it to "Cleese" in 1915 upon joining the Army."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Cleese#Early_life

[–]reddit_user13 1 point2 points ago

Ahhh... but what kind of Cheese? Cheddar? Camembert? Wensleydale?

[–]mahoganywolf 4 points5 points ago

I'm afraid we don't get much call for them around these parts sir.

[–]reddit_user13 1 point2 points ago

But it's the single most popular surname in the world!

[–]hoppyfrog 0 points1 point ago

We're fresh out.

[–]MrBustos-Riff 2 points3 points ago

fuck yeh Monty python?

[–]DJMattB241 2 points3 points ago

I was in a Monty Python sketch night and one of the roles I had was a dead body in this sketch.

Easiest. Gig. Ever.

I was also one of the slapstick guys in our version of this sketch. Got hit in the head with a board. Was awesome.

[–]reddit_user13 1 point2 points ago*

http://www.nytimes.com/best-sellers-books/paperback-nonfiction/list.html

1 HEAVEN IS FOR REAL, by Todd Burpo with Lynn Vincent. (Thomas Nelson, $16.99.) A boy’s encounter with Jesus and the angels during a rough appendectomy.

Nonfiction NY Times? Really?

[–]mcaysen 2 points3 points ago

This kinda sounds like an upmade story to make a proper amount of money. also experiments and researchs showed that "near-death experiences" are caused by the hallucinogenic tryptamine "dimethyltryptamine" which gets released by our brain shortly before we die.

[–]zak13362 1 point2 points ago

There's an interview with credible sources.

[–]ctswiss 1 point2 points ago

You'd think after the Parrot sketch he'd be better at picking up things like this.

[–]colinski94 1 point2 points ago

There always be a place in my heart for Monty Python, ever since i bought that dead parrot

[–]sayrith 1 point2 points ago

thats a lively coversation

[–]Nayr39 1 point2 points ago

Well since we can clearly see that they're dead... looks like not much happens after death! Who would of thunk it? Nothing supernatural happens in life, why would it happen the moment your body stops working?

[–]FunkyBiscuits 1 point2 points ago

What does this even have to do with athiesm?

[–]Citizen_Lear 2 points3 points ago

"Life after death" is a big thing with theists.

This is a joke that plays on the concept by trying to talk to people who are deceased.

As with many posts here on Reddit, this one pokes fun at a commonly held belief or meme.

It's appropriate for r/atheism because people who subscribe to this group would have similar mindsets; one can't talk to dead people, because they are dead.

Get it?

[–]sirbruce -2 points-1 points ago

There's nothing inherent to atheism which denies to existence of an afterlife or communication with the dead. Atheism simply denies to existence of a god.

[–]tian_arg 8 points9 points ago

Since when did this subreddit limited itself to post only about the strict definition of atheism?

[–]aesu 2 points3 points ago

God facilitates the afterlife. Provides a mechanism from which such a thing could come about.

[–]angertrain 0 points1 point ago*

A hypothetical "afterlife" absolutely does not require a god figure. It's common to have one involved, but unnecessary.

Technology alone could wrap that one up pretty well.

[–]Blackson_Pollock 1 point2 points ago

I'm waiting for the time humans will be able to upload their memories and personalities onto networks of some sort, thereby making the "human cloud".

[–]aesu 2 points3 points ago

It doesn't. But hypothesis get pretty thin on the ground without a 'god' figure.

[–]angertrain -1 points0 points ago

You actually don't know that.

Hard opposition to unknowns is unreasonable in all but the most literal interpretations of data.

Basically 1 + 1 does not equal 3.

I do chuckle a bit when people think something is impossible, particularly in regard to technology.

For example Einstein-Rosen bridges, and all the little bits of extra tech from the coming millenniums.

Ya, pretty much magic. That old Arthur C. Clarke quote applies.

Enjoy being sure of things though. That's very logical (actually it isn't, but ok).

It's actually on VASTLY thicker ground without a god figure. How people don't realize that, I don't know.

[–]aesu 0 points1 point ago

You response is literally, an incoherent list of meaningless statements.

You seem very sure about your lack of sureness.

Hypothesis are marked by the fact that they aren't sure. They are simply speculations, hopefully, but not always based, on relevant evidence and axioms, or at least self consistent postulates. Most are just wild speculation, however.

So, if you reduce the field to only hypotheses that have evidence/adhere to an axiomatic truth or are self consistent with respect to a postulate, the number of hypotheses about the afterlife which could be considered theories is very thin on the ground.

The most significant piece of evidence concerning the afterlife is that every animal, from the most complicated human, to the simplest virus, must have an afterlife; since there is no fundamental, physical difference in the make-up of any particular life form. The number of hypotheses, and therefore theories, which describe why or how inanimate packages of DNA could have an afterlife, are essentially non-existent. Therefore, to invoke an afterlife, we need to propose a mechanism by which some animals are favored, or special, in a non-obvious biological way. There are a number of coherent hypotheses on this, but all must invoke agency; some form of intelligence or force which makes reality appear one way, but actually operate another way.

I would love to hear a theory describing a mechanism which would facilitate an afterlife, as commonly and meaningfully understood, by entirely natural, uncoordinated means. I can think of none which stand up to what little knowledge we have.

[–]angertrain 0 points1 point ago*

I can give you a hypothetical given some projections of future technology.

Einstein-Rosen bridges connecting a distant point in the future (a future that can artificially create such a construct...) to several locations in the past.

There are a few theories on how that could be done, they could exist naturally, other hypothetical civilizations may have built them with a single locked end. It's a long shot but much more probable than a god.

Really you'd only need one wormhole that predates whatever date you actually want to start picking up people after they die.

Utilize some "Star Trek" like technology, transporters, medical technology. "Beam" these people up to large vessels at an opportune time before their exact death (might mean leaving a "husk" if the situation warrants). Leave identical copies of bodies. To get back to the future where you want to use them to colonize other planets or whatever accelerate to nearly the speed of light or utilize other wormholes.

Bam. Done. Completely within existing theoretical (though extremely energy and resource intensive), boundaries of nature. No god needed.

Reason? Voltaire once said if god didn't exist it would be necessary to create him. Maybe just an afterlife will suffice.

[–]aesu 0 points1 point ago

Again, you need an intelligent entity to do al this. It isn't a natural explanation for an afterlife.

[–]Mynameisaw -1 points0 points ago

Only in certain religions.

Pretty much every religion has some concept of life after death, and not all of it links to a deity.

[–]Citizen_Lear 0 points1 point ago

But atheists can appreciate a joke about the afterlife, and be amused by a misunderstanding of the metaphysical mechanism involved in gaining said post corporeal existence.

One of the beauties of being non theistic is all of the time one has available to do things other than dwell on isms.

[–]PraiseBeToScience 0 points1 point ago

I see /r/circlejerkmilitia strikes again.

[–]Dann01 0 points1 point ago

I was wondering If I could perhaps trouble you for a source?

[–]CumulativeDrek 0 points1 point ago

of death?

[–]Dann01 0 points1 point ago

Well actually, to whatever Video clip this is from

[–]ExcoriatingSarcasm 0 points1 point ago

I died once, and it wasn't too pretty.

[–]santali 0 points1 point ago

If it wouldn't be much trouble, could you perhaps link me to the original picture?

[–]aesu 0 points1 point ago

A resounding yes, then.

[–]rgliszin 0 points1 point ago

haha, haven't seen this in so fucking long. thanks for posting.

[–]SirJiggart 0 points1 point ago

Hmm, afterlife mints.

[–]KrunKKrist 0 points1 point ago

I thought I saw four dead people...

[–]thatguyferg 0 points1 point ago

I was expecting this and was a little disappointed.

[–]Dude_01 0 points1 point ago

interesting aproach to the issue.

[–]nothmoth33 0 points1 point ago

...and now for something completely different.

[–]gradualbiggiesong 0 points1 point ago

Heh, they're dead. Reminds me of the time my shit was deep, deeper than my grave G, I'm ready to die and nobody can save me. Fuck the world, fuck my moms and my girl, My life is played out like a jheri curl, I'm ready to die.

[–]ddalby8 0 points1 point ago

whats happened to comedy?

[–]BlueSound 0 points1 point ago

you live to die, but you die to live!

[–]cultured_banana_slug 0 points1 point ago

There's plenty of life after death! It's the life that happily digests your body after you're dead.

[–]Axxerand 0 points1 point ago

Can dead people start WWIII?

[–]AerialBreakfast -1 points0 points ago

Downvote me how much you want, but what the fuck does this have to do with atheism? I thought this was a place to discuss theories and shit. Or am I really wrong here? In that case I'm unsubscribing from this subreddit.

[–]Decent_Dude_Dave -1 points0 points ago

Their are ways to reach the other side and remain alive. But I may be in the wrong sub reddit. You guys are pretty ignorant as a group. haha the irony.

[–]Mynameisaw -1 points0 points ago

The irony is quite thick, especially considering Atheism has nothing to do with the exisitance of an afterlife.
